There are a few actors in mind that could do just as good of a job and be threatening without being direct, like Javier Bardem in the Movie no country for old men I think it was called.
I truly believe this man is millions of years old. This version of Death is so well done. He's not evil, or even antagonistic. He has such an otherworldly feel.

@@pepethefrog6809 agreed man, Julian richings was fucking outstanding as death. For the longest time I refused to believe that deaths death was legit. But now it's stupid billy walking around as death and that's just unacceptable
@@Ilkvomit Ok,so here's a theory. Death faked his own death as he was already fairly sure of what dean was going to do before he did it. He died and as no one in existence had seen death die before, they assumed he was dead and he allowed the events that would of happened if he was dead happen, making it appear as though he died. He did it just because he couldn't be bothered anyomre and wanted a break
nick towars Now that would be a little uncharacteristic of him. He said at one time about his ring "Sometimes you just want the thing off." but I don't think he wanted a break. More than likely he was trusting Dean to make the right decision (which is kinda stupid), because he had a very - I repeat - VERY dire situation with the first curse a.k.a. the Mark of Cain. However I think he was just got rid off so that the emergence of Darkness would look more hopeless. The strong, almost omnipotent Death is nowhere, so there only help would be either one of the Archangels or God himself.
@@kaalsemulzii1920 That Idea makes sense as if death was around it would have probably given us a conclusive answer as to the most powerful being ever, which the writers seem to want to keep vague
"This is one little planet, in one tiny solar system, in a galaxy that's barely out if its diapers. Im old, Dean. I'm very old. So I invite you to contemplate how insignificant I find you." God damn, I love that line.
“I’m old Dean...Very Old, so I invite you to contemplate how insignificant I find you” “At the end, I’ll reap him too”.... “Oh yes, God Will Die Too Dean” Amazing lines delivered amazingly
I genuinely have no idea how these are amazing lines. These lines tell you how badass they want you to think Death is. Show, don't tell. The viewer should come to that conclusion on their own.
@@mechanomics2649 This is one of those circumstances where tell is better than show. Everyone understands death is a core concept of the universe. Showing his power would be unnecessary. Dialog is more than sufficient.
@@mechanomics2649 He does though, when he rolls into Chicago. Walks down the sidewalk and casually kills someone that disrespected him as he inspects his suit after being bumped into. Every other character has a show of force, an impressive spectacle of power. Death snuffs someone in the same motion he uses to brush his shoulder.
The line when he says "You know you can't cheat Death" just really raised the chills on my spine. And the way he glares at Dean, knowing that if he dared cheat him, there's no escape.
The thing I love most about Julian Richings' Death is that, out of a lot of different iterations and appearances, his performance is the one that strikes me as being the _oldest._ A lot of versions can accurately portray Death as timeless or ageless, Death of the Endless comes across like that very well, but this one feels the most genuine. He's existed since before existence was a thing, and you can tell.
Why would he care about the time anyway? Death is a force of nature. Only way around it is to cease everything that is capable of observing from existing, since lifeless can't observe it's surroundings. I am not much into lore of Supernatural so I guess this does not matter in this series' case.
Death of the Endless genuinely cares about the living, and wants to ease our pain. Supernatural's Death doesn't care. We matter to him as much as amoebas matter to us.
This character is the epitome of "less is more." Never gets angry or tries any convoluted tricks to get what he wants, he demands respect and remains calm in all situations, even in his own demise.
@@mechanomics2649 He never shouts or even raises his voice. Doesn't do anything extremely flashy. Sure, he creates a storm, but that's not a lot. They could have used CGI or some creepy sound effects to make Death seem more menacing, but they don't. Just simply Jullian Rigman's incredible acting and delivery of his lines and Dean shitting his pants is all that is necessary.
A perfectly written, acted, and filmed scene. One of the best I've ever seen, anywhere. Julian Richings and Jensen Ackles deserve awards for this scene, but so too do the writers.
I have no idea how the writers deserve an award for this. It's pretty campy dialogue that just makes me feel like the writers are beating me over the head with how dangerous they want me to think this character is.
@@mechanomics2649 I know right. Why does every powerful being have the need to emphasize that the mortals in their presence are little more than bacteria
"Oh yes; God will die too, Dean." I don't know if it's his tone, his sincerity, the storm in the background, the ominous music, or all four things, but good Lord I got serious chills when I watched this scene for the first time. Still do.
The first time I watched this scene, I misheard that line as 'God would like to, Dean' implying that God wants to die. I still hear that when I rewatch it and I take it as headcanon because that's so interesting and bleak
I think, for me at least, it's just how "matter of fact" it is. Like, to us (and Dean) it's a huge thing to hear. Literally mind blowing. But to Death? It's the same as saying "Today is Monday. " And somehow, that's even more unnerving.
I swear Death is one of the most amazing characters! The way he speaks, you truly do believe he is the oldest, and wisest being in all of the universe. And it looks as if he's seen everything
Remember the days when Death was so mysterious, cunning and wise? remember when Lucifer was so terrifying we couldn't even comprehend what he wanted? remember when Castiel was the powerful loyal soldier who was self-conflicted between doing his job and protecting his friends? Remember when Villains had depth? Remember when Supernatural was fun?
I like this Death. He's never malicious. He's a fact of reality. I imagine that if he had to tell someone what his job is, it would probably be: "I'm the one who was here when the first life existed. My job as Death is to be there when the last life is extinquished. My job, in it's entirety, is to close down the metaphorical bar, clean the tables, put up the chairs and turn of the lights."

Dean wasn't even afraid around darkness. But he was scared around death. The only character in the entire supernatural who dean and basically everyone else was afraid of.
Hum now I'm thinking about it maybe keeping him a mystery is what made him so scary and terrifying it would be like only ever hearing about how powerful lucifer is but never seeing what he can actually do like it kind of breaks the illusion of an entity that is so over powered that it took years and the mark of Cain for dean to have death give over his scyth to dean

Alec Bowman You are making the positive claim, not me. You must provide evidence of your god hypnosis or I have no choice but to reject it as unsupported. I'm not making a claim, I'm rejecting your claim due to a lack of evidence. If it worked they way you are trying to make it, by shifting the burden of proof, then you would have to provide evidence for the none existence of every other god in human mythology. Instead you must provide positive evidence of your positive claim, and no, the bible can't be used to prove itself, that's circular logic. Let's break this down for you. You must provide evidence that A) a god exits B) that said god in the Abrahamic god and not Odin, Ra, Zuse ect C) That it is the Christian version of the Abrahamic god, not the Jewish or Islamic version D) that it is the version of the Christian version of the Abrahamic god you follow. Catholic, Protestant, LDS, Mormon ect. E) that your initial claim "none stronger" is true. Even if you manage to do all of that, the Bible is still wrong. There was no flood, there was no 6 day creation, the earth is 4.6 billion years old, there is no historical evidence for Jesus, Moses, the exudes or the mass enslavement of Jews in Egypt and rainbows aren't magic.
Alec Bowman This is not opinion, you don't get to pick and choose what it real. No, there is not Egyptian record of the exodus because it never happened, the only record of Jesus is the bible (accounts written decades after the fact) and that has been shown to unreliable. I'm not even going to dignity humans and dinosaurs with debunking. If you are delusional enough to believe that then you are beyond help.
Dean'd make the "dickless" jokes to the Angels, continually make puns from Dick Roman's name, beat up on monsters that can throw him across the room with one arm. But during that whole chat, he looked like he was shitting himself internally. You know a Supernatural character is a badass if Dean doesn't want to mess with them.
Having faced demons, angels, monsters and a whole lot more, Dean is quite a tough guy who doesn't get scared easily. But when facing off against Death itself, he's about to shit himself from pure fear.
+Joachim Vorbech Christensen that means he is afraid to die, its a normal fear ust like everybody, and i mean everybody.. even demons, angels and monsters fear their own deaths
+たばるこshokiでぶろonori I think if Death were truly angry at Dean, he'd make him UNABLE to die. Sooo...you know, Sam dies, Bobby dies, Dean gets all torn up to hell - burned, electrocuted, stabbed, even eaten - and still lives. Not the FUN immortality. Scary thing, when you think about it.
True, if Death doesn't have you on his (s)hit list, he won't reap you early. Of course, slamming into him on the street and telling him to watch where he's walking, "pal" WILL get you on his shit list
I just love that Death is this celestial being, one of the Four Horsemen, that's been a part of the grand cycle of the Universe since the beginning, he finds humans insignificant... yet he enjoys their food and drink.
@@oldboygamer9985Its truly amazing. Death is telling Dean of his insignificance in regard to the entire universe and then proceeds to serve him a slice of Chicago deep dish.
No, that won’t work. Death, in Supernatural, loves good and simple food. Real, salt of the earth, blue collar food. If you get him a 100$ steak and the guy next to you gets him a 10$ cheese steak from Philly, Death is gonna want the cheese steak.
To get the ring of War, Sam and Dean had to fight their confused allies. To get the ring of famine, Sam had to go back to demon blood. To get the ring of pestilence, they had to withstand a bunch of deadly diseases at once. To get the ring of death, Dean just had to eat pizza and have a conversation with death himself. It's truly ironic that the most powerful of the horseman is the one that gave hi a ring the easiest, but it really says something about his character
Technically, Death demanded that Dean be willing to give in and let Sam throw himself in the Cage to trap Lucifer. Death, like everyone else, knows Dean's no stranger to pain and dying, but his weakness is Sam, so he demands that Dean give up his "life" in exchange for the ring.
"i invite you to contemplate how insignificant i find you." ...what makes this line so badass, is how nonchalant and self assured he plays the character, which in turn, strikes not fear, but sheer terror in dean.
Not before or since has any character in the entire Supernatural universe been able to command so much authority in front of Dean Winchester. He'll stand toe to toe with Lucifer, mouth off to Michael, kill leviathans, but Death is so much more...more.
It happened. God was talking to death. It’s the episode where God entrusted Lucifer with the Key to unbind Leviathan. This was before Lucifer rebelled against God. AND yes!! God was nervous around Death!
Still hate how they stopped using this guy for deaths personification, he's hands down the best impression, billie and such who came after didn't even hold a candle to this guy.

I realize you put this comment down 11 months ago, but I've been re-watching this scene and wanted to say how DAMN much I agree with you. It makes me sad that the y wrote him off like that. I honestly think he'd be the only character I'm okay with coming back at this point, simply because he's...death. He's never truly gone.
I've always liked this version of death. He doesn't really care about anything except his job and his place in the universe. Everything dies, from the gods to the smallest living thing.
I miss the original Death, how powerful and divine it is portrayed. That's probably one of the few times we saw Dean that scared. Coming back to these videos after the final season makes me realize how good the first five seasons were.
I love this interaction with Death; he was the easiest to get the ring from, heck he wanted Dean to take it so he wasn’t bound to Lucifer anymore. I love that Death was so nonchalant as well; so calm not intimidated by anything even God. I’d never thought I’d see Death eating pizza either 😂
ok, in my opinion...this is the BEST character in the whole series. the castings perfect, the performance is subtle but effective, and its just so PERFECT. 10 out of 10. good job!
I hope that's what they do, that'd be beyond awesome, just see chuck laying there defeated with dean and/or sam standing over him and death just enters eating a bag of pickle chips complaining that they took too long
@@peterparcoeur5917 Well, Chuck WILL (or does, if we assume his body is biologically older than Sam’s and go off the end of Carry On?) die at some point, he just has to go through the humiliation of a powerless mortal life first
This scene right here is honestly the main reason that I doubt the character (Death) is actually dead. He makes it clear here that he is responsible for not just Earth, but literally all death anywhere in the known universe. Now don't get me wrong, things have gotten bad on Supernatural before, but as Dean says here that's just a level far, far, FAR above the Winchester's paygrade. That'd honestly be akin to actually killing God. (Heck, they couldn't even kill Lucifer. They had to trap him.) I couldn't see the writers realistically trying to confront the catostrophe that'd result if Death wasn't around.
+Orochi2345678 idk because in 11x2 the reaper that visits Sam says that no -one is happy to help the guy who helped kill their boss and now if they die the new boss wont let them be brought back no matter what.
+Normal Commenter I don't think that Death is dead, only his vessel. What the reaper might have meant was, that Death will no longer help the Winchesters since Dean attacked him. Perhaps it is like when Sam attacks Crowley, where Crowley thanks Sam for reminding him who he really am, and so Death has returned to be the merciless primal force he was always meant to be. Killing Death goes to much against everything, even for Supernatural.
Death is literally the only person in the Supernatural Universe who looked down on Dean like he was a snarky bacterium that could be smashed like a bug. Not even God talked down to him like that.
That's because God loves humanity.....always has. He pulled a lot of strings for Sam And Dean over the years of the show. Go back to the beginning and watch t all again
Honestly, if this Death stayed until the series finale with God/Chuck, that “I’ll reap God too” line would’ve held a helluva lot better. Especially with Chuck’s last scene.
"To a thing like me a thing like you, well. Think how you'd feel if a bacteria sat at your table and started to get snotty. This is one little planet in one tiny solar system in a galaxy that's barely out of its diapers, I'm old dean very old. So I envied you to contemplate how insignificant I find you." I think dean just figured out how much death doesn't care about him much less humans.
That's how amazingly well written this personification of death is. He's so well realised even that cliché meme can't detract from his gravitas. Where we know instinctively that Dean is the joke compared to this Death.
"you know you can't cheat death" to a guy who's died and come back to life tons of times. Seriously though, Death is awesome and if he is actually dead I will be very upset
+Regrettable-Username A Reaper said in the current season that Death found them constantly dying and coming back amusing. It's why he allowed it to happen.
I always find it fascinating when immortal beings are portrayed in a human or humanoid form. The psychology of being as old as the universe is a concept I've always been obsessed with. I feel like this portrayal of death is so fucking badass, especially the line where he's like "Yeap, one day god will meet his end as well." and says it so matter-of-factly. Literally how I've always seen death personified, true neutral.
I still can't get over this scene. Early Death was absolutely perfect. The characterization, the casting, the dialougue, the DELIVERY...just impeccable.
Out of all the characters on the show both in the beginning and currently, this is by far still the best characterization of a supernatural entity. You can feel just how his level of power and influence isn't measured by strength or intellect. He is a force of nature, and the end of everything the true immortal
"When the first living thing existed, I was there waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job will be finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave." -Death, Sandman
After so many years, the boys (and us) are kind of jaded. But this was back when things were still fresh. This is Dean, realizing that the universe is looking at him, right in the eye. This Death is elegant, mysterious, and terrifying as much because he exists and anything else. Dean doesn't yet understand what it means that Death is giving him so much personal time. In his own way, Death likes Dean and is amused by him.
I think in whole SPN Angel arc, apart from Misha's Castiel and Mark's Lucifer, ( too many characters and they were just come and go angels.. didn't even get noticed ) Death is the most brilliantly written character of all. Death was portrait as wiser than God, older as God, and in the end he doesn't want to be extra scary because you have no way of avoiding him.. His dialogs were perfectly written, like one character that writers actually didn't get bored writing, they put some effort to it.. Specially him giving his ring to Dean and make him wear it for a day.. That scene and the concept was one of shows highlights for me.. Actor himself is brilliant in every way.. His delivery was spot on, clam, clear and deep, just like a wise old man who's seen so much... Not to forget the intro music.. Julian Richings as Death .. One of the best TV character choices to me.. (this was a comment I left in another clip, but couldn't help but re-post it here. I love this scene way too much.. Well, the whole scene from when he walked out of that black car.. Julian Richings stole the scene like no one ever could.. )
As Jurken Said, it's a 'pale car'. Book of Revalations 6.7 following, New International Version: "I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth." Book of Revelations is the origin of the four riders, and has some seriously quotable passages ^^ (also, Pestilence is newer than book of revelations, he used to be Conquest... but well. The Black Pest kinda convinced people that Pest should be a Rider. Can't fault them I suppose)
This is absolutely one of my favorite scenes from Season 5. Julian Richings's portrayal of Death is phenomenal; no-one can do it the way he does, in my opinion.
This is my favourite portrayal of Death by Julian Rigman because he acts "normal" and yet, he is one of the most powerfulness supernatural-type characters to ever walk who can cause you to instantly fear him without the need for typical violence!
One of the many things this show got RIGHT, was how Death viewed all of humanity as tiny and insignificant. I would even take it a step further and say that if Death really existed, it would never bother to show itself on this tiny speck of a planet, just like you or I would never stop at an ant hill, to converse with the ants inside. Also, a human would never be able to kill Death, like Dean did. I rolled my eyes when Dean cut Death down with his own scythe (or whatever its called...). If Death exists, there would be no way to kill it, after all, its as old as the universe, perhaps older, one of the top dogs, as cosmic entities go. Its level of power is beyond our comprehension, theres definitely no way to kill it.
Such an awesome scene, kinda miss the days when Dean and Sam could still be intimidated and shocked by things. In the last few seasons they had this attitude of "yeah whatever it is we can kill it"

Death: *You know you can't cheat Death.*
Dean: *Oh yeah? and what about Jesus?*
Death: *:/ ...*
No, he was created from the moment existence became a thing.
@Green Queen So who built the castle?
I just made it 666k likes the irony lol
Death of the Endless genuinely cares about the living, and wants to ease our pain. Supernatural's Death doesn't care. We matter to him as much as amoebas matter to us.
This character is the epitome of "less is more." Never gets angry or tries any convoluted tricks to get what he wants, he demands respect and remains calm in all situations, even in his own demise.
Where is the less part here?
@@mechanomics2649 He never shouts or even raises his voice. Doesn't do anything extremely flashy. Sure, he creates a storm, but that's not a lot.
They could have used CGI or some creepy sound effects to make Death seem more menacing, but they don't. Just simply Jullian Rigman's incredible acting and delivery of his lines and Dean shitting his pants is all that is necessary.
He got a little irritated when he mentioned Lucifer though lol.
"Oh yes; God will die too, Dean."
I don't know if it's his tone, his sincerity, the storm in the background, the ominous music, or all four things, but good Lord I got serious chills when I watched this scene for the first time.
And somehow, that's even more unnerving.
His tone to me shows he doesn't actually know God will die as he NEEDS him to be able to die so he can reap 'the big fish' life itself lol
All four things…. Good one ….

I'm not interested in your Christian delusions.
Alec Bowman Kid? You're the one who believes fairy tales. You're the one who thinks the characters in SPN are real.
You must provide evidence that
A) a god exits
B) that said god in the Abrahamic god and not Odin, Ra, Zuse ect
C) That it is the Christian version of the Abrahamic god, not the Jewish or Islamic version
D) that it is the version of the Christian version of the Abrahamic god you follow.

J. Hanna Maybe he just left to another universe because he got tired of us?
Death is literally the only person in the Supernatural Universe who looked down on Dean like he was a snarky bacterium that could be smashed like a bug. Not even God talked down to him like that.
President Trump
what about when michael called him an ant? does that count?
That's because God loves humanity.....always has. He pulled a lot of strings for Sam And Dean over the years of the show. Go back to the beginning and watch t all again
I can see this character being a true gentleman towards women. He has both compassion knows his own importance in the bigger picture of all things.
I love how Dean's even a little frightened because usually, he acts flippant and sarcastic. As he said, this is way above his paygrade lol
Just a bit
Death is my favourite character
Wicked is my favorite show i,ve been to in the theaters.
Oh Kyle, if only you knew the subliminal messages in musicals.
Julian Riching really was born to play this character.
“Life, Death, chicken, egg, in the end. I’ll reap him too”
“God?... you’ll reap.. god??”
“ *oh yes. God will die too, dean* “
The series peaked at this moment, when the greatest powers were still unfathomable.
It's "So I invite you to contemplate how insignificant you are."
Dean: "...is this the part where you kill me?"
Death: (Pauses) "......am I a joke to you?"
But that's death the horse man you can't cheat him
+Regrettable-Username A Reaper said in the current season that Death found them constantly dying and coming back amusing. It's why he allowed it to happen.
Yeah the only reason they keep coming back is because he's allowing it. He does (did) find it amusing.
Death is one of the very few people who scares the living shit out of Dean...
The lightning flashing across his face is so well done for this scene
This actor portrays death so perfect, this guy gives me chills lol
"When the first living thing existed, I was there waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job will be finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave."
-Death, Sandman
Julian Richings stole the scene like no one ever could.. )
Not black car. What is the color of that car..? it's not white either..
grey cause his portrait as the pale rider....
As Jurken Said, it's a 'pale car'.
Book of Revalations 6.7 following, New International Version:
"I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth."
Book of Revelations is the origin of the four riders, and has some seriously quotable passages ^^
(also, Pestilence is newer than book of revelations, he used to be Conquest... but well. The Black Pest kinda convinced people that Pest should be a Rider. Can't fault them I suppose)
thanks to both of you..
Kaushi Ariyabandu welcome
This is absolutely one of my favorite scenes from Season 5. Julian Richings's portrayal of Death is phenomenal; no-one can do it the way he does, in my opinion.
10 years later and this scene still give me goosebumps
This is my favourite portrayal of Death by Julian Rigman because he acts "normal" and yet, he is one of the most powerfulness supernatural-type characters to ever walk who can cause you to instantly fear him without the need for typical violence!
I love this scene it's the 1st time ever you see Dean truly floored and afraid.
Its level of power is beyond our comprehension, theres definitely no way to kill it.
the very fact that he is as old as God
Imagine the after credits scene in the final episode of Julian Richings reaping old man Chuck, goosebumps
"Think how you'd feel if a bacterium sat at your table and started getting snarky"
LMAO!
Such an awesome scene, kinda miss the days when Dean and Sam could still be intimidated and shocked by things. In the last few seasons they had this attitude of "yeah whatever it is we can kill it"
