20:38 I loved the reviews up till here. I think you've misunderstood the original intention of the song. It was not a diss track by any means, it was a song exploring the dichotomous nature of female relationships, especially as they exist in a tenuous and competitive state within the music industry. Not a diss track at allllll, more like introspection, assumptions, and vulnerability
yes, odd to name that one as a diss track when von dutch (reportedly about FKA Twigs) and sympathy is a knife (which is 100% about Taylor Swift) are right there
@@SongwritingDeconstructed Sympathy is a knife isn't a diss track either, it's about feeling unworthy and comparing yourself to others and feeling like everyone's sympathy over your relative success is actually a bigger burden.
@@arc4705 reading the lyrics it specifically says 'this one girl taps all my insecurities': it's about one person who's everything she's not: Tall, white, blonde, thin and successful beyond the wildest dreams of any artist. 'Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show/Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick'. Her bf is one of the members of the 1975 - he's referenced the line 'George says I'm just being paranoid' and this would have been written during the time Taylor was (publicly, they had a years long on and off thing on the DL) dating the frontman, Matty Healy The song may well be using 'sympathy' as a stand-in for general fake niceness, or a specific incident we're not aware of, but the song is most certainly about Swift
I hate youtube, it ate my reply. @SongwritingDeconstructed Taylor Swift is part of the storytelling of the song but is not the subject; the anger in the song is self-directed. So... still not a diss track. Bye, goodnight, etc, I'm over this convo cuz it's UA-cam and we're not about to see eye to eye ever

I had the exact same thoughts the first time I heard her verse on 'I Got It'. This idea was finally cemented when I heard her remix of Caroline Polachek's 'Welcome to my Island'. That remix was life changing and she's practically spitting verse after verse autotuned to the heavens, straight up a rapper (I have very selective rap knowledge)
Have yall ever heard this carti/charli mashup mix? I was a little obsessed with it a few years ago ua-cam.com/video/ygzKHDvPZV8/v-deo.htmlsi=LKSKJK8xdjgfYcjW
When I was 19 (In 2017), I was given the opportunity to interview her and at this stage, I wasn't a huge fan so did it with no care. For years to come, I ended up becoming a fan and listening to every release - following her career super closely. Wish I could go back to my 19 year-year old self and tell her to have cared more!!!!
There's singing and there's speaking and there's rapping, and you can do all three in the context of a hip-hop track or you can do it in the context of a pop song. Rapping doesn't mean it's a hip-hop song, it means you're emphasis is on the meter and rhythm of your flow, not the melody. Tyler, The Creator is a rapper, and his album Igor is a hip-hop album... but he spends the majority of that album singing, not rapping, and I think the reciprocal of that is also often the case, there are times singers spend a lot of their albums, which are not hip-hop albums, actually rapping, I think there's actually a lot of stuff that we don't normally consider rapping which actually IS rapping, we just don't think of it that way because it's not in a hip-hop song. I think back to Paul Simon in Graceland and the number of times he drops the melody and just quickly delivers lyrics with bouncy meter... that's rapping! He's not singing, he's not speaking, at several points on that record, Paul Simon is a Rapper. The definition is distinct from the cultural understanding of the term, and I think people just get hung up on the idea that Rap and Hip-hop are the same thing.

I'm happy to learn more about her artistry but I'll be honest I'm just going to use this to put Drake fans in their place by telling them Charli XCX is a better rapper than drake.
This is such a fantastic video. In her Tape Notes podcast she talks about how she always wants her verses to have a slightly different flow and I was like huh that's not very normal for a pop musician to have so much variation in her verses and then she says in the same podcast that she never sings during karaoke she just raps I was like oh my god she's a rapper... I've been such a big fan for so long but BC I was blinded by style I didn't connect the dots. 5 in the morning is an absolute standout you're absolutely right. An amazing video!! I'll be subscribing.
i noticed it with how she handles her collabs with others. no other pop artist collabs are set up in the way hers are, there is very much hiphop/rap influence over this. i dont know exacly what it is but there are set up with the same vibe, especialy on her mixtapes
we fans that is stanning her for a while always noticed it, she can def flow. spring breakers, cloud aura, blame it on you, flash pose, welcome to my island remix, examples of her showing her rap abilities.
it's interesting, she's mentioned that she loves Lou Reed songs. his style of singing (especially later in life) was almost like reading poetry with a slight melody implied. very cool, slightly detached, poetry... kinda like rapping in a more conversational way: not as showy or ostentatious. i'm so into the idea of her pursuing that style and I think we'll see alot more of it in the future :)
such a great video, thank you man, like really! as for a person who discovered charli not that long ago, it was such an interesting dive into some interesting points of her discography
It took me a month to finally click on the video but I'm so glad I did. I loved the way you broke down the different rapping styles both flow wise and thematically and let us hear it all along the way. One song that you didn't mention is anthems. The verses on anthems have incredible evocative imagery paired with some of the most technical and difficult flows she has ever attempted. Any rapper would be proud of them
Omg I've been writing about EXACTLY this. Thank you I feel way less crazy. It's so hard to peg rappers to 'white' people (I think we're now in a time where her Indian identity is more appreciated, and is now obvious to Americans, I think really via the Kardashians, but that's a whole 'nother thing). But those who are appreciated, like Lean, or Mac, are either super talented or at least have incrediiiible flow. And she's got fuckin flow! And who don't dawn hip hop culture directly, but access it through things directly in their life (for Charli, the underground scene). I'm obsessed with Next level, and it's also not confirmed if the vocal was her or the gal on big brat/AG, so this writing style is really seeping pop in style.
i have to admit my eyebrows did raise at her being called a white girl, but tbh at the start of her career she was literally whitewashed lol, 'break the rules' was like wow they really turned the contrast all the way up on that video
I think of her ultimate early career rap being “so far away” from true romance. The blueprint for her subsequent career flows. I also agree 5 in the Morning is one of her least talked about best songs.

What if her next album would be a rap era, i would die for that. Maybe she gonna collab with other rappers on the album. That would be so cool. Especially with playboi carti. That would go so hard. she even said in 2022, that she wants to collab with him so bad.
Her remix of “Welcome to My Island” is a gr8 example of her rapping
That was such a bop
spring breakers is also pretty cool
