This was a result of a scandal that affected the Sidney gold medal winner Kostas Kenteris 3 hours before the start of the Olympics.. The Greek runner had an accident with his motorbike on his way to a doping control. He ended up in hospital for a couple of days but got disqualified from the Olympics because he didn't appear for the doping control. Such a shame..
The accident never happened. It was staged by Kenteris and his girlfriend Thanou. They were subsequently given a 31 month suspended jail sentence for staging the accident, although to be fair, an appeals court overturned the ruling.
