The 'harp' you see when the music starts is actually a lyre of ur. The oldest string instrument known to mankind.
Tuomas deliberately wrote the vocal lines to try and challenge Floor to do new and interesting things with her voice (she hadn't done that much light, super agile singing before this album, nor switching between light agile singing and heavier vocal setups). It let Tuomas do a bunch of things with this album he simply wouldn't have been able to do without having Floor in Nightwish. If you ever do Shoemaker from this album, I think it's the single hardest vocal arrangement I've ever heard in contemporary music, and yet Floor does it *live* on their current tour. I don't even want to think about how much she had to rehearse that song to be able to nail it live the way she does.
Floor says that Shoemaker and Music are the most difficult songs in the album. Wonderful job there.
I REALLY enjoy watching your NW reactions. To me, the best reactions come from people who actually know something about music. Like you. Thank you.
8:06 "An air for only you to sing" must have been what Tuomas said to Floor after writing those vocal gymnastics
Thanks Home Gnome, so glad that someone can afford to be a Patreon to so many reactors and keep the Nightwish flame burning brightly. This whole album is magnificent. I hope the Greatest Show on Earth is either Wembley or Tampere. Each has it's selling points, either Richard Dawkins live with Troy on guitar using E-bow at Wembley or fireworks with Troy on whistle at Tampere.
My small contribution to the NW army....there are hundreds of people reacting to NW, but not many I’d pay to see. JW is right at the top of that list.
Great choice Home Gnome, thanks. I always enjoy this song. I hope to see this one live one day, preferably in a small setting. 😍
Great reaction also! besides I like the accent 😉
@@homegnome2429 thank you
Endlessness is a trip - can't wait to see you listen to that one!
This is Perfect Album Opener !!!
This album is a continuous story after "The Greatest Show On Earth" ( creation of the universe, earth and now the creation of Sound ).
And the worlds oldest string instrument( That Harp looking thing at the beginning), Lyres of Ur, about 4500 years old (they found 3 lyres of different quality at an ancient graveyard/burial site near the city of Ur) and the tablet leaning against it is the clay tablet with the worlds oldest song written down on it, roughly 3500-3600 years old. It's called "Hurrian hymn to Nikkal". Nikkal was the goddess of orchards so it's a good guess that it was written as some sort of wishing/thanking for a good harvest hymn. You can actually hear a bit of it played on CD2 in Anthropocene, Toumas added it in there and if you search for it you can find the piece being played in it's entirety on YT.
And,....these strange sounds at the beginning before tribal drums , are actual space noise samples from NASA ( At least in my humble knowledge ).
Plus,...second CD has a Fan made music video (Approved by Tuomas himself ), and this is long 31:02 (ignored by most reactors, to this being an instrumental piece).
My favorite part was "All it took was Time and silence" and Music stops for few seconds...awesome. Tuomas is a genius after all.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM !!!!
NWSU 🤘😎🤘
That long song you speak of... Its done, and its on my patreon page. Will hit YT at some point! 😊
And it’s amazing!
@@homegnome2429 Which one did JW do? 👀🤞🏻
@@civiumardor6344 This is referring to All the works of nature that adorn the world. I assume you're asking about TGSOE, in which case the answer is Tampere.
@@homegnome2429 That is wonderful news, very much looking forward to seeing that. Thank you for all that you do for the community 😊
This album contains loads of challenges to Floor and her exquisite voice. She rose to the challenge of course: Tuomas making the most of having one of the world's best singers at his disposal.
The great thing about these lyrics is that they're written from the perspective of music itself so if you read them carefully it's Music itself singing it's history back to us.
The instrument spinning in the video is The Lyre or Ur, the world's oldest preserved string instrument dating back about 4500 years. Toumas also uses a short piece of the worlds oldest song in the Anthropocene part on disc two of this album.
Thank you Home Gnome! I love that song. 😃
Never could’ve guessed!
@@homegnome2429 😂
I read somewhere that at the beginning is interstellar background "noise", the first music so to speak.
Love the ABBA comment. Hadn't occurred until you said it - great insight. Excellent dog contribution too.
Oh god I would never in a million years made a connection to ABBA, but you're totally right xD The cadence, the melody, the harmonies... yes lol.
Can't wait for your next Nightwish videos, I'll prepare a bucket of popcorn for the Greatest Show on Earth.
After hearing what Floor does on this album, you can understand the direction her solo stuff is taking.
This album clearly comes out of the understanding of the band as it existed, with Floor and Kia's unique abilities in mind.
The poet and the pendulum is an amazing experience
Your reactions/analyses are consistently at the top of the heap. You come at it from where Tuomas comes from and it provides a unique take that few other reactors offer. And always enjoyable, keep it up!
This album is underrated. Musically it's some of NW's best work.
The album Human:||:Nature is about the the earth, evolution and humanity. From the beginning to the end :-( .This song is the first of the album and is about the very beginning of music.
So there is a line describing that possible first instrument: "As you blew your cave bear bone and began to hum"
The instrument you can see at the beginning and at the end is a lyre with a bullshead, as this was part of a set found in the city of Ur and considered to be the oldest string instrument ever found
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Headed_Lyre_of_Ur
it seems that these lyres did not survive the turmoils of the Gulf wars, but there is a copy in London.
And as for Abba: Wings of Pegasus has checked Floor's voice on the use of autotune: she is not using that and her voice is in a natural way perfect on pitch and on key. He also analyzed Agnetha Fältskog's voice in the same way (ABBA is completely before autotune) and she has that same perfection as Floor.
Tuomas requested “outer space” sounds (at the beginning of the song) from NASA - the different elements oxygen, hyrdrogen etc have different frequencies and they applied different sound waves to them. They also assigned sounds from spaceships, rocks and stars as the waves bounced around!
Then there is the sounds / “music” from the animals, the winds, the ocean, then the tribal sounds from mankind.
This band is out of this world. Tuomas is out of this world. I bet there are so many things he put in his music that we haven't discovered yet. Nightwish is so much more than music.
I'd say your interpretation of the lyrics is as good as anyone else's. They are deliberately written in a way that leaves room for everyone to find their own meanings. Also Tuomas seems to like "easter eggs", including references to other NW songs etc. Keep up the great work you're doing.
Hope that Nightwish once do this song live.
If I'm not mistaken, I read that the intro in the beginning features an actual recording of "space noise" from nasa...
Thank you.
Good to see Music on here.ty Gnome
Oh Greatest show on earth coming up 🤘👏👏👏
As both a Nightwish-fan and a swede, I really liked your ABBA-comparison 😃
Discribing ABBA... i think you pritty much described how one should try to listnen to quality in music, before judging likeability. Myself, i always do try to see the quality in music also, even when i do not like what i hear. To me, that gives me an opportunity to approach any production in a kinda unbiased way, wich i think you also prefer. loved your input on that.
Abba... Omg I can hear it. 🙈 Thnx a lot, now I cannot listen to the song anymore without seeing them singing it in my head...
And you said there were sounds like tribal ... And one song from the album is called tribal and sounds even more tribal 😊
Great reaction...the Nightwish world is magic...The album Human Nature is a masterpiece..Tuomas is a genious composer the Metal Mozart...Floor is sublime soprano and Metal Queen is a legend...Emppu prodigious guitarrist, Troy is master muscian, Kai and Jukka powerful musicians... Nightwish is the best band our time.
Great reaction.
You are currently my favorite reactor, the stuff you hear/ pick up is really mindblowing
And ooohhhh boy .......
I think I need to take a day off from work, the Greatest show on earth is coming up....
That will be a video of +40 minutes
Gave me the same ABBA vibes first time I heard it.
Thank you! Finally someone Who had the abba-vibes when you listen to it the first time and dares to say it
The whole Human:Nature album I think is a test for Floor. Most songs have difficult vocals and are very hard to sing. She handles it well.
Always enjoy your Nightwish reaction. I’m really looking forward to the greatest show on earth reaction. Can I suggest starting out with the Tampere version. I know the Wembley version can be tempting because of the surprise at the end but in doing so you miss the surprise at the beginning & the magic of Nightwish playing to a home crowd at Tampere. Some reactors play the Tampere version then skip to the end of the song at Wembley to see that surprise there. Cheers!
Thanks Bud, I already filmed it a couple of months ago! 👍
It is brilliant. Totally uplifting and for me it fills me with the human spirit - ingenuity, artistic, evolving, and creative. Totally positive and intricate music. :)
14:20 - 15:30 I believe I know what you mean - it sounded a little bit like Tuomas took Abba's Waterloo and transposed it into minor :-)
Great reaction ❤ tears of laughter and... ABBA 😂🥰👊 Spot on!
Being classically trained you should listen to and watch the video of the last track on this glorious album. The title is All The Works Of Nature That Adorn The World. It is truly breath taking. I simply love your reactions. Thank You So Much!
Thank you very much, Spencer. It'll be on UA-cam sometime down the line. It's currently on my patreon. Think it's my longest video so far at nearly an hour long!
@@JWSoundworks2 Thank you for your reply. I can"t wait to see it. It transports me to a place of peace.
Great reaction. You put into words many of my (subliminal) thoughts! I think this album demonstrates another level of maturity / complexity in Tuomas' evolution.
The song is about the evolution of the first song from hammering on a rock to drums to blowing hollow bones to strings and then the vocals.
Oh thanks a lot, I've heard to this song so many times, live or this studio version, and couldn't put the finger on the reference : I agree on this little ABBA shade
Great reaction to this beautiful piece of music. I loved your conjecture that this is self-referential. The lyrics refer to MUSIC... the very first song, which is the very first song on the album and is THIS song. It also refers to leaving the NOISE behind, which is the second song on the album. There is also a reference to ENDLESSNESS, the last song on the first album. Terrific. As you said... Brilliant! Another Tuomas classic that Floor executes with such artistic flare.
Happy you came back to nightwish again 🤟🏻
Great first listen analysis. I’m especially intrigued by the Abba reference. - Floor does live in Sweden after all😉 As a pianist yourself I’m sure you are better placed than most to understand Tuomas mindset and process composition wise! This album is very well constructed, you really get an insight into his genius after a few listens. Keep up the good work and greetings from New Zealand.
Another excellent reaction and analysis! Already excitedly looking forward to both Pan and TGSOE! Stay safe 🤘 ✌️
I’ll be waiting for how’s the heart for the instrument’s sounding like a heart beat you will love it
An awesome reaction as usual! Always a pleasure seeing Nightwish on this channel so Home Gnome is doing great work.
Thanks, although I hope you aren't too evil....
Thanks Home Gnome! You rock!
- with appreciation from Namibia 🇳🇦
Most welcome. I hope to visit your homeland some day.
You will love it... much safer and cleaner than South Africa
@@homegnome2429 would like to know what you think of the latest Blackbriar single Fairy of the Bog ua-cam.com/video/AdrVZBIw1r8/v-deo.html
Great analysis of this mini masterpiece! Home Gnome you're a bloody legend for sponsoring it. Looking forward to Pan.
Ah yes, I forgot my full title is Home Gnome Ze Legendary 🤣
This is a great opening track. Like Pan himself telling the story about history of music. Very thoughtfully fabricated by master Tuomas. And very difficult lines to our queen to sing (which she masterfully delivered). 😎👍
Nightwish is brilliant. The amazing compositions by Tuomas and the execution by Floor and the musicians. I could listen to this band all day long. Your mention of ABBA….. I never thought of that as pertains to this song, but you are right. When I close my eyes I do hear that epic group with Agnetha and Frida singing along. Great analysis, well done!
Loved the Abba reference. Hey this is my first video of yours I have watched. Great job.
Also.. your intro is epic. Reminds me of Dream Theater, but in a refreshing new lens. Very good
Hello, in my opinion, this is not a Song, where the Composer (Tuomas) write about Music. The Music, tells to the Composer. And then Floors Voice. Amazing 🤘
You were spot on about ABBA, mate. I am into heavier stuff like Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura etc. But I do not mind ABBA from time to time. They were really a great band. Big thanx to your patreon as well. Very good reaction, as always, mate 🤘
Fully agree, ABBA had such a massive influence in European popular music. And not only that but the pop hooks they used can be found everywhere from pop to metal*. Calling something reminiscent of ABBA is to me a badge of honor, carrying on our recent cultural heritage.
*Imagine an Iron Maiden song slowed down and B. Ulvaeus on the piano and A. Fältskog on lead vocals: quite a lot of them would work.
As always great reaction almost forgot check out the video for Tribal from this album just for the line dancing sequence if anything else.
I do love the album so much. Pan is also one of my fav songs. Many things to look forward 😉
At 14:31 I realised that I had already watched this on Patreon :)
😂😂😂
Thanks home gnome
Brilliant, brilliant indeed. I enjoyed your reaction immensely!
The heartbeat (How’s the heart) and also a lot more references to the other songs in Human :II: Nature, like Noise, Pan…
Excellent reaction dude! Love when you react to NW! It's going to be a great month!
Best wishes from Namibia 🇳🇦 ❤️ 👏
Thanks dude!
The self-referential verses you were thinking of are probably Leonard Cohen's: "...a fourth, a fifth, a major lift..."
Oh thanks a lot. Now I can't unhear the Abba there 😂
I mean... the song is called "Music". That topic includes this piece, so getting meta is almost inevitable.
I'm a metal fan but love The Day Before You Came by ABBA fiercely.
From the first listen to H:|:N Music I couldn't put my finger on it, I felt something but I couldn't describe that feeling. Now, two years later, you're spot on, that puzzle piece is ABBA. I grew up with their music, amongst many other more heavy, like hardrock, heavy metal, glam-rock/metal and prog-rock/metal, but I always liked ABBA (tbh Agnetha the most, LOL) for their complexity and layering of the songs. It was POP, but damned good POP.
Music and Procession are my favorite songs on the new album, but they are the most stripped down of songs for Nightwish
This album is like joining Floor to Nightwish, 1 step up, another step ... Great, just great. I recommend the piece "Shoemaker", dedicated to the memory of this researcher and astophysicist.
btw. Abba has never been a "banal" band as some claim ... Even metalheads confirm it, I too 🤣🤣🤣 I like Abba, Bee Gees too.
Whoow, man I also have the same ABBA feel in this one.
Thanks
For the choir impact listen to Shoemaker
Spot on with the Abba, exactly what I thought the first time I heard this song. I'm not even a big Abba fan or anything so I couldn't possibly relate this to any particular Abba song but it definitely has the vibe.
Good doggo.
If your are going songs from this album Noise and Shoemaker are both great
So busy reading and replying to others I forgot to leave my own comment!...
Good job 👍 This song really continues where they ended on their previous album. Second, I guess Tuomas would not mind if NW would be placed right next to ABBA. They are legends, the number of world class artists giving them all the merits they deserve for having paved the way popular music - in its best renditions - became afterwards, is enormous. And, at least to me, in the Ghost Love Score video from Wacken at ca 3:13 Floor looks quite a bit like Frida. 🤩
There's a new Marco interview less then week. And he's been working with his old band Northern kings and a solo album. Living in Mediterranean Spain.. and doing great!!!! Playing smaller circles
Thx for the reaction! I also love the sound of your guitar and well played I might add . Your music knowledge is also impressive 🤘🏼💥🤘🏼
Great reaction! Can't wait to see what you make of Greatest Show. Tampere preferably, please. Some reactors have finished off with the last few minutes of the Wembley show...
Thanks, it's Tampere!
@@JWSoundworks2 EXCELLENT! Hope you enjoyed it! (Stupid thing to say - of course you did!)
Just found you just now. Appreciate your insight into the musical structure. Nightwish studio recordings are definitely something to hear. Live is live, but naturally you can hear so much more finesse when they have total control over what you're hearing instead of having to compromise for live performance. If you do the Greatest Show on Earth live, I'd recommend also listening to the studio version. There is a lot there that is siimply harder to discern live.
Excellent reaction/feedback to this track - look forward to your reaction to the GS - luv your work man!
The Human part of Human Nature(vs The Nature part) is a huge departure from previous NW albums in that there are no instrumental backing tracks, it is all organic to the band. There is a 4 person choir utilized. The vocals are centered around the 3 part harmonies that existed prior to Marco's departure, live the vocals now consist of Floor and Troy(and the choir). The Nature part is pretty much all orchestral however. I find myself wondering why Tuomas never seems inclined to work with a live orchestra, I've never heard him address that, anybody else know? Also there is one high quality(audio) festival appearance, a new festival I think, Deichbrand. However people have been experiencing copyright issues with it.
Tuomas has said that he would be happy to work with a live orchestra but because the band tour extensively he wouldn't like to pick one place to do a "special" concert with an orchestra. He didn't elaborate on a reason other than he doesn't think it would be "special" as so many other bands do it, I actually wonder whether he feels it would be cheating the audiences at other shows? I thought that the live Virtual concerts would have been the perfect place to do the orchestral shows but I imagine logistically it would have been a nightmare for a first attempt at that style of a concert. Maybe it is something they would consider at a later date?
Abba for me too!
I get what you mean about that ABBA-like sound in the chorus and I have no problem with it because I think ABBA was great.
Can’t wait for the greatest show on earth🤩
When the album came out some said Floor would not be able to do some songs live especially Shoemaker by were they wrong.
I havent crack the "code" on this one yet. Tuomas has said that there is a reason why vocal line goes exatcly like it does... The insttument in the video is first human hand made instrument called dulcimer. Same ABBA wibe hear too when I first time heard this, and still. I think he did that deliberately 😉
I love Pan, so sad the are not performing it live!
You're not the only one getting Abba vibes. They were/are hugely popular in Finland. I'd be amazed if Tuomas hasn't been influenced by Benny and Björn - the harmonies, the instrumental layers, lading every nook and cranny with hooks.
🎵🎸Moody, atmospheric, instrumental, one-man-band prog? Right this way 👇
ua-cam.com/video/1nWe3g_7pqA/v-deo.html
Hey, though I'm Swedish, ABBA is lightyears behind NW, I'd never listen to ABBA personally
And although Tuomas is the metal Mozart, whatever he compose the lyrics is important so listen to it or read it, especially if you are gonna do The Greatest Show On Earth or in worst case scenario The Poet and the Pendulum don't do it without some research before..!
Otherwise great reaction
Greetings from Sweden
Great. The first time I heard this song: That part is pure ABBA...

Just on a completely unrelated note. Is that a Jamstik in the back there and if it is how are you liking/accurate is it? (Edit: I'm starting to think yours is a "regular" headless... yep, never mind)
ps. The other song he was referencing music theory was in _Song of Myself_ (You read it on the video wall of the Wacken 2013 concert)
@@forkless not a jamstik, dude, it's a Strandberg Boden.
@@JWSoundworks2 Yes, I realized after I said it ahahaha The body shape isn't even close! (Been wearing my ass for a hat all day already, so I guess I can add that one to the list as well)
@@forkless no judgment here, dude. Fuck, do I know how that feels! Lol.
@@JWSoundworks2 Also so many guitars and so little time (and more importantly money whahaha)
In your case, this one is a good choice, since is mostly instrumental (how the very first songs were born from primitive sounds, such as animals, and nature itself, they also created their own music as they appeared and evolved on earth, until human came and invented instruments to mimic their sounds)
Never once thought of Abba, bt once you said it....It clicked. Also you have brought up in the past about your like of The Tea Party. I too think they are a great band, after Rush, best thing Canada produced. But was interested if you ever came across a band called Flowerhead. If not I wold suggest that to you.
Cheers, haven't heard of Flowerhead before!
Your analysis are always so great.
If I may add a curious fact, this is the opener of the latest album, they use the first minutes of the track for the current live setlist but they don't actually play the song for some reason, they go straight to Noise (the first single and 2nd track, not sure if you know it already)
It's a shame since it's a really good song and could work very well live.
GSOE? Please.. let it be Tampere 2015 🙏🤘
I have to say... I made this same connection with ABBA, inexplicably. The funniest thing is that months later I discovered a song called The Chosen One by a group whose name is Dark Sarah, and I felt this ABBA issue very strongly, and then days later I met Amberian Dawan, their cover of Lay All Your Love On Me and the entire Looking For You album, which is totally ABBA, especially the song Two Blades. You need to hear urgently! Sorry for any mistakes, I wrote this very quickly and I'm from Brazil.
Your analyses always give a bit extra insight - this time it's mentioning that the song reminds you a bit of ABBA. I don't know when the change happened from "everybody" liking them to being shamed for liking ABBA 😂
You're my favourite reactor for the music part, together with Elizabeth Zaroff for the vocal analysis. There's a lot I never conciously noticed before you point(ed) it out.
Bonus points for your face while waiting for the dogs to shut up 🤣
Very kind words, thank you Tina! Glad you enjoyed it. 😊🤘
Interesting - you think rather of the ABBA girls could sing Floor's vocal line in this? Those enormous and unusual intervals? Hmm, I'm not convinced 😆
