One of my life-long passions is trying to understand how creative people create. Watching you work through those riffs on piano and guitar was magical! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the breakdown, man! Thank you. :)
Same as a visual artist even for me does not matter what kind of art I like breakdowns of artistic creations and music is my fuel my art.
love ur reactions! shudder before the beautiful live at wembley
Now that's what I call a breakdown. I'm in awe.
Cheers, Dave - glad you enjoyed it!
London's Young musicians Children's Choir is one of their regular partners, along with London's the Metro Voices Choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
what an OUTSTANDING workout you gave us! I'm not a musician but am amazed at how quickly you latched onto the elements of this fantastic song. W-O-A 2013 was a unique show seen from the perspective of nearly a decade on. I'm always impressed by this bands performance only 10 months after a huge internal seismic event. thanks for taking the extra time to break this down.
Thank you, Thomas!
Oh man...dude... I get such a healthy mix of admiration and envy listening to talented artists like yourself! I mean, come on!! The greatest thing with Nightwish (in my humble opinion) is that...well you know, usually if you start analyzing great things they tend to loose their magic...your approach ADDS to it! Sublime work Sir, I applaud you. As to Floor, what can one say indeed...I can only repeat what I felt about a zillion times; she's the only vocal artist that can hit me full blast in the guts while gently caressing my cheek... the only 'negative' point about Nightwish perhaps (again, speaking for myself) would be that they kinda ruined other bands for me so far... So, a big thank you Sir, you just became a highlight in an already sweet Sunday...greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪!
Greetings to Belgium - thank you for the flat-out flattering words there! :)
This kind of analysis and display of your musicianship is exactly why I was so keen to get you back to Nightwish. Fantastic vid thanks JW 👍🤘
Thank you, Tim! Good to see you here, bud!🤘
Love this kind of breakdown! Giving the layperson a reason WHY their favorite songs were composed the way they were is top tier content. Thanks, JW
Could not agree more. JW stated in the vid that "this is great fun." It may have been great fun for him to do a breakdown of this vid, but it is great fun for us to watch and learn WHY we love these songs the way we do. It gives me a new appreciation not only for the composers and performers, but for talented folks like JW who can explain these things to us.
Careful John. More in depth analysis & musical accompaniment like this for Nightwish tracks is going to break the internet. Really digging the 2 camera setup. WELL DONE!
Hi David! Thanks for the kind words, dude! :)
I'm late to the game but your "improvisation" of the piano 19 minutes in got me to subscribe to your channel. Absolutley brilliant.
I appreciate how you gave props to Jukka for his energy, passion and style of drumming. IMHO, it seems he has a real swing to his style of drumming. I usually find myself moving like he does for side to side as opposed to up and down to the beat.
I really enjoyed how you are now doing more detailed musical deconstructions and commentary. Yes, it is a children's choir that is being used. Wonderful reaction John. Love your intro guitar piece.
Thank you dude! Yeah the guy has a great bounce to his style that is really infectious!
Really enjoyed that runthrough with the instruments. Also love that you pointed out Jukka's drumming. A shame he had to retire due to health issues. Don't get me wrong, the drummer currently with Nightwish, Kei Hahto, is an awesome technical drummer, but I feel that Jukka had a unique style that fitted Nightwish perfectly. I miss the vibe that he used to bring. Thanks JW.
You are right. Kai is a great drummer and I love his work. But Jukka was/is such a groove monster and you always get me, with a good groove.
Great reaction again, its very interresting to get your first class breakdown of Nightwishs music.
So good to hear an analysis by a craftsman. And yes, Floor Jansen is a wonderful mix of tenderness and power!
best analysis ever, you are able to catch every purpose of every musician of the band.
Very kind - thank you!
This is what reactions should be! Excellent and high quality in every areas. Thank you 😊
A very humble admirer of your skill here. Sincere thanks for analyzing this masterpiece so nicely.
Thank you kindly!
I am officially extremely jealous and proud of your ability to decipher and play Nightwish songs.
But mostly jealous 😂😂😂😂
Great work dude!!!
Thanks dude! :)
One of my favourite band..the islander & planet hell gave me goosebumps!!
I'm quite jealous of you how easy it is to play it yourself, but also all the more reason to continue with my guitar lessons. thank you for your great response.
Fantastic Analysis and breakdown. When you see something like this it provides so much knowledge and appreciation for the musically challenged among us!
Thank you, Tim! :)
Wow, that was fun to watch! I'm in awe of your ability to absorb things from the music and replay them with such precision. 😮
Thank you! :)
thanks for the reaction from Colorado. enjoyed your music at intro. am 70 so have seen the best ever in concert. consider this best rock band in 40 years
Dude, I just love your reactions to NW! Such a catchy tune!
Best wishes from Namibia
Greetings to Namibia - thank you!
Love your reaction! Hope you will do more Nightwish; that’s why I subscribed😊🇳🇱
Awesome reaction and review man!
Indeed it's a children choir, they used it a lot in this album as it's sort of a concept based on a story about a child, a circus, amusement park, that sort of stuff
Like I said long ago when I first stumbled upon you in the early days, you are a true docent of the music. You brought additional life and meaning to an already amazing song. So incredibly interesting. Thanks for taking your time with this one. What a great thing to wake up to Sunday morning.
A pleasure, Dave! Thanks for the support, mate! :)
Brother guitarist here. Love it when you transcribe to the git box. That's how i compose and listen to songs.
Brother, I have rewatched your work over and over, that doesn’t happen very often.
Yours is a real connection to music that I can feel across the screen.
I can’t thank you enough.
I learn every time.
I just didn’t comment before.
Cheers.
Appreciate the kind words, dude! Glad to hear you're enjoying my inane drivel! :D
If I had to pick a favourite 10 seconds of Nightwish, it would be where Floor breaks into operatic mode in this performance with the most beautiful smile on her face.
I'm going to add my voice to the others who have commented on your reaction. It was awesome.
Seeing you work out the notes and chords was very impressive for a non musician like myself. I actually haven't seen too many other musician reactors do anything close to this. Bravo.
Thank you! :)
Fantastic output John, love this deep dive and your skilled ear as well as musicality. Plus this song absolutely bangs!
Thank you, dude!
What a treat to witness a great musician dissecting this song. You have an excellent ear for the tiniest details. Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you for the kind words!
Thanks for your insightful reaction. 🙏🏻
For the backing track they work with the London Philharmonic choir and yes also a boy’s choir.
You can hear one of the boy’s in the opening of ‘The Poet and the Pendulum ‘
Awesome stuff.. great reaction and breakdown John.. love it.. thanks 👍❤️😘🇮🇩
Perfect Analysis! Every Composition must play piano!
Excellent analysis; really impressive how easily you seem to pick up on the riffs on the guitar and the piano. Love your work here.
Thank you, sir!
simply great to watch... love how you understand music. I'm a very amateur drummer and in awe watching Jukka & Kai; but my brother is a musical guru like you, he's become a school Music Teacher, he's mainly a drummer (used to be really big in Marching Band part of music), but can do pretty much anything but vocals, point being as someone with some actual musical education: it's great seeing a reactor that isn't fake and someone that appreciates the artists, not just trying to get Subs and Likes. And for that, I'll Subscribe... Good Job! Oh, and welcome to the Nightwish Army!
Thank you for the kind words, Rob!
Tuomas writes such catchy and memorable choruses. This little song packs a punch with lots of variety thrown in. Really solid breakdown. Thanks!
Cheers, Milton!
The King of analytical reaction/reviewers! Your ear for music is ridiculous! Perfect fella 👌 👍 🤟
Very kind Andrew - cheers! :)
Well, that took a music reaction to a new level... thx man! awesome..
plus you really nailed the riff at 9:30...
You, my guy, are a master of instruments and music! Great vid!!!
Thank you! 😊🤘
Wonderful analysis and breakdown of a very well-crafted song. I loved every bit of your reaction. Thank you so much!
Cheers, Rodney!
Best storytime reaction out there by a country mile
🤩👍💥💯
🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
Catchy chorus, huh?
Indeed...!
I'm sure someone already said it (I'm seven months late on this), but the riff you're thinking of is from Blackened.
Bravo John. Now that's a proper musical analysis! One of my favorite bands and songs so I've seen a million reactions and you still found a way to deliver your analysis to help me understand it even better.
Good to see you here Will - thanks for the encouraging words! :)
damn why dont we know about Nightwish in the US?????? SO GOOD!!! Also ur a cool guy..fun to watch!
Been watching your channel on and off for a little while. It’s refreshing to hear a musicians breakdown of all the intricacies of the music and not just the obvious things that everyone picks up on. Being a musician myself for quite a long time, I applaud you and your approach and insight. New subscriber.
The melody is a real good feel melody
The riff you are thinking of is from Blackened
Shortest straw
You got it! - It was Blackened.
Kudos to you, sir. A most interesting analysis and explanation . You are good; enjoyed it very much!
Always look forward to your breakdowns… musicianship is on point!! Love watching talented ppl enjoy music from other musicians 🥰. Your awesome keep the videos coming JW. Have a great day.
Thanks bro! :)
I might just fell a little bit in love with you, your musical ear, your brain and your skill. Thank you!
I feel likes he's one of those guys who reveals the magicians tricks and are very proud of it lol love how his guitar sounds in sync with the band itself
John, I've watched and rewatched your NW reactions. I do believe this is one of my favorites. Your talent and passion are absolutely contagious. I wanted to add "my friend" to that, but since I can't claim that, let it be enough that the ones who can honestly claim you as friend are incredibly lucky people. Thanks again for sharing yourself here. 🙏🏽 (the effusive American again lol)
You're way too kind, Jennifer! Don't worry, I constantly remind my close friends how lucky they are to have me in their lives. I'm a ray of sunshine that spreads joy wherever he goes. And if you believe that, you'll believe anything lol. :p🤘❤️
Jukka a " human metronome ", ( grin) but my fav drummer of all time , and I saw Keith Moon ) sadly shortly after this concert Jukka had to resign the band because of health but still works with the band on the business side\
Could watch you analyze all day>It is 3.15am here in Hobart, Tasmania and I have been mixing in one of my singers vocals all day...too much coffee and wide awake. So many nuances that I am learning from this band. I listen to no one else now. Great job with the guitar and piano...you are a talented player!
Hope you got some sleep in the end! 😵💫 thanks for the kind words, dude! 🤘
Now we know a bit more about WHY we love these Nightwish songs - Tuomas’s creation, every band member bringing it all to life and you explaining it to us what’s going on!
Awesome reaction & analysis!
Thanks! 😊
Nightwish First US Tour date 2022 5-7-2022 Lowell, MA Tickets on sale now!
Really enjoying your NW analyses!! I somehow never made the connection until you mentioned AJFA and started playing around 9:20-- there's definitely a similarity to Blackened there.
Great reaction, thank you. Being a guy with a tin ear, your tech info is a joy. Looking forward to your next reaction. Be well.
Appreciate the kind words, Tim. Thank you!
Yes, It's a London based Child Choir. In the documentary about the making of Imaginaerum Album you would see that.
hey bro I want to see you on the drums for the next songs by nightwish "Yours Is An Empty Hope" and "Romanticide" :)) Greetings from the German nightwish army
The Bande
Vocals : Floor Jansen
Bass,Vocals : Marco Hietala
Guitar : Emppu Vuorinen
Keyboards,Songwriting. : Tuomas Holopainen
Uilleann Pipes : Troy Donockley
Drums :1-Jukka Nevalainen until 2013 /and then 2-Kai Hahto.
I enjoyed your deconstruction of the song. I think a lot of people focus on the vocals, which are great, and miss the really amazing chord progressions he uses here. The music has a slightly sinister undertone to it which contrasts so well with the vocals. And the chorus is a masterpiece. I just love everything about it.
God i love your reactions so cool watching you play and truly experience what Nightwish fans see in this band you seem to bring it more into our world and for us Musicians that are still new and learning it's insightful and enjoyable watching you play. Oh they use real people Orchestra's and Choir's That they record for there shows I mean ultimately would be great to bring them along but imagine how expensive that wold be and Housing them, feeding them, passports, travelling with children too would seem almost impossible so it makes sense to pre record them and play it in the back ground. Thank you again look forward to the Next Nightwish reaction.
Great reaction! Your analysis really adds to the viewing experience and it's a joy to see you enjoy and jam to the music.
Your piano pastisse was so good!
I love your gift of figuring out guitar and piano!! ♥️ Your breakdowns and attention to detail are fascinating.
Greetings from a lifelong Alaska and passionate Nightwish fan. ❄️ ♥️ 🎶
Thanks! Greetings to Alaska!
Loved your piano improvisation man! I always liked the piano, I wish i could play. Feeling jealous..🙃🙃😜😜
Best analysis of this song ever! You just have to learn how to throw dozens of picks into the audience and NW can send Emppu home🤭
Wow just wow, in the middle of it and already amazed. Learned a lot so far and im happy about 10more minutes
Around 14:20 I'm thrilled to see you dissect the drums. What I find great about that 'fill' there, is that from the first hit on the off-beat of 3 to the next ones, the drive and tempo are maintained. That isn't a given, since as you noticed Emppu is riffing along now, beefing up that part which may feel to some like it would slightly drag after a while (I get that feeling near the end of GLS, same concert).
Certainly right after Floor speaks the text (intoxicate..) there's the slight risk of losing just a bit of edge. Enter the really smart drum fill to allow the pace to progress unhindered into the chorus. Love, love, love it! That's a drummer who - like Ed Warby in Ayreon - knows just what the song needs at key points.
Floor btw, does a stellar job to keep that drive going throughout the whole of the song in the way she's timing words and sentences. Instead of keeping up with the beat, she sets it together with Jukka. Try doing it yourself with the lyrics, will give you a feel for her mastery & breath control in this seemingly straightforward piece. Obviously, I skipped the breathtaking operatic parts ;)
I'll stop rambling now. Ty for another great reaction! Cheers from Amsterdam.
Love your t shirt. RIP Eddie.... Great breakdown / analisis. Kudos.
Hmmm chefs kiss reaction
Excellent reaction, the stuff you pick out is awesome. Having a good solid song to tinker with has got to be fun.
Thanks mate!
@@JWSoundworks2 no worries! Seriously digging the watch the song through, then pick it apart & jumping on the keys or guitar & explaining it.
I imagine many songs start off as just messing about with the chords & then picking notes out & so it goes. Sounds like a lot of very technical things that I'll never be able to do but am a life long fan of those who do it. Tuomas really is a clever writer.
@@shirazzza There's more than one way to skin a cat, as they say! :D
@@JWSoundworks2 I'm being glared at by my cat haha. Just as long as your chooks don't turn into emus & kick your dunny down she'll be right mate. ☺
I'm spending some quality time with YT & some podcasts cos I'm a bit under the weather post booster jab. Eating painkillers & staying hydrated is my goal. And naps. Lots of naps ha.
Have a good one!
@@shirazzza Yeah, make sure you stay rested and hydrated - it'll pass. The first dose I got (astrazeneca) had me in a right state - lost the ability to talk and my hands turned into stone, couldn't move my fingers - genuinely thought I was having a stroke - scary af! The boosters were grand, though. Fun times! lol
Great analysis. Lots of subtleties pointed out that few reactors ever notice first time around.
More Nightwish please!
Bro! Really enjoyed your musical breakdown! So cool to watch again! 🇳🇱🤘🏻
Hi there, im not in the habbit to reacting to video's, but this is just brilliant. Really adds something. Keep this up and you'll be one of the top 5 reactors on UA-cam witin a year ( imho) Greetings from The Netherlands.
Very kind of you to say so. Thank you for the encouraging words!
Lovely way to start a Sunday!
wow, I enjoyed this so much. It is wonderful how you analyse music and can break it down in smaller pieces. I also find it great to tap with their constant changing rythm, 4/4, 1/2,3/4
Thanks
You know your stuff, John. Pleasure watching your reactions. From each angle. Chappo!
Appreciate that, bud! Thanks for watching!
Brilliant Breakdown 🙂
Definitely like your reactions and analysis of music. Not being a musician I love the way you can pick up on the sections of a song and demonstrate it. You appear to be a talented musician in your own rite. And seeing your apritiation of the music on the level you do reinforces my feelings for it.
Thank you and have a good day.
Great video!
you are awesome my man. id love for u to give Nightwish the Jinjer treatment. 😃🤠
Another great reaction...I'm catching up 😁. You're a very talented guy, and it's really interesting and entertaining to listen to your expert analysis of NW. Really pleased you've boarded the NW train 🤘
As per Wikipedia below:
Orchestra and choir
The choir group Metro Voices contributed vocals, led by choir mistress Jenny O'Grady. The Young Musicians London also contributed vocals, led by Lynda Richardson and co-ordinated by Jenny O'Grady.
The orchestra, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, called "The Looking Glass Orchestra", was led by Thomas Bowes and conducted by James Shearman.
The orchestra and choir was arranged, orchestrated and directed by Pip Williams.
I loved this reaction!!
The analysis, the break down, the runthrough with the instruments, watching you feeling and enjoying this song,
and I would not have minded at all, if afterwards you would have read the lyrics, commented on them a bit and reacted again including the lyrics on your listening.
Looking forward to more Nightwish songs!
Tuomas (keyboards) said:" when I wrote chorus of Storytime, I knew right away this is it. Felt like million bucks" 🙂
Lol we all get this stuck in our heads. Doing dishes... I often start humming it lol. Great song. Superb performance.
Loved your analysis and pulling out the instruments to show us. Thanx :)
Thanks for watching! :)
love ur insight… baroness chlorine and wine
Thanks for a great analysis. As a non-musical person, this really gives me a better understanding of the music :) looking forward to hearing more Nightwish reactions from you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks :)
20:06 Yeah, and consider that children's choir fits really well with the overall meaning and message of the song - dreams of childhood fantasy lingering in every man. Tuomas, in addition to his "regular" musical talents, is very gifted in what some knowledgeable people call "prosody": the connection between music and text building a complete, mutually reinforcing whole.
...AND, gotta mention: you did not dwell a lot on Floor's performance, but what you ultimately said (24:24) is so true - it may be the essence of her immense impact on people! Good job!
Oh man! I've recently discovered NW and went down that rabbit hole... You cannot go wrong with any song from them, but this one is special! The start and the catchy chorus, the energy at the end... but what takes it to another level is the operatic middle section! Goosebumps galore! Floor is incredible indeed!!! Great reaction and analysis / breakdown as usual John! Take care!
Many thanks, Pablo! Thanks for dropping by :)
hmm , you really know your shit . Great to see and hear ..
Dude, you are amazing! I love your analysing!
with you on your journey, love your insight :)
Wow...thank you for awesome reaction and music breakdown!
