I feel that Donkey Kong is one of the most underrated Nintendo games. They're always fun platforming and challenging.

Actually Xenoblade is the most underrated Nintendo series. Most people only hear of it from Smash, yet the series is an open-world, cinematic masterpiece. Everyone loves Donkey Kong Country (myself included) so it's not really "underrated"

Donkey Kong Country Returns and its sequel Tropical Freeze are, by controls, by visuals, by soundtrack, and by sheer fun of the levels, the best 2D platformers I've ever played. They are artistic in their quality. I'm glad you found time to come back and experience it.

Ryu, who can do the nastiest most complex kaizo levels, almost dies in the first level of this lovely game. I find that so entertaining! :)
I can't remember the last time Ryukahr so deep into a game so quickly. I loved the deep run through the first two levels because that's also how I play these sort of games. I need to 100% level 1 before I move on! I would love if the series continued.

Just wait until Ryu realizes there's a secret shiny gold medal for being extra fast as well as a you-didn't-get-hit gold medal for the time trial xD

Tropical Freeze is such a well designed platformer and I'm constantly listening to its soundtrack. Glad to see Ryu finally play this gem

Wait til he finds out you can high jump off of enemies by pressing jump again at the right moment
He was trying to do that in the first level
That's one of the things I found frustrating about this game. When you have say, diddy or Dixie on your back it's hard to time that high jump(sort of like in New super mario Bros Wii U delux where they made the jump button the same button you twirl with, so that when you go to jump off an enemy you sometimes twirl right past it.) I still haven't gotten to the point where I feel I'm in complete control of the character. The controls just feel a bit "off" and not natural(then again, donkey kong was never a precise platformer like Mario, and even the platforms themselves are not clearly defined.)
That being said, I'm only in world 4(I think) and haven't played it in about 6 months or so because I stopped playing it to play a different game that I wanted to play, and haven't gone back to it yet. I'm almost don't with guacamelee 2, so maybe I'll go back to it after that.
DKC was always one of my favorite franchises as a kid(I absolutely loved the SNES games, and really want to find a way to play DK64 again without having to buy an actual Nintendo 64),but for whatever reason, I just don't love the new DKC games(DKC returns and this one) like I did/do the old ones. I would love to see a new 3D DKC on the switch(or whatever Nintendo's next console is) though. I also wonder what these games would have been like if Rare had continued to make them.
@@Mockturtlesoup1 I absolutely agree that it is difficult to time the jump because of Diddy's rocket backpack or Dixie's hair twirl. What I love about the retro studios Donkey Kong games is how no two levels feel similar and there are no floating platforms. Every platform that exists has some reason why it's there. It's not blocks suspended in midair like in Mario but it's not supposed to be like Mario. So that's a really neat attention to detail. Plus tropical freeze tells a story from beginning to end. It's initially just an invasion of these arctic creatures but then you see them harvesting fruit and then you go through factory levels where they are processing fruit juice and making popsicles or something. I don't know I didn't finish tropical freeze either but for different reasons. I think retro studios has a keen eye for detail.
I hope that Ryu does a full lets play of this game!

What I love most about this game is that it feels really smooth if you want to speed through the levels, but it also offers a great experience for completionist players who want to find every secret. That and the awesome soundtrack and overall vibe.

How do you get them?
@@dennismetz7337 There is a secret time beyond the gold time that rewards you with the gold shiny medal. I'm not sure but apparently those times represent developer times so you have to be crazy good to get those. I think someone actually made a list of the times you need.

I remember enjoying this game a lot and did even 100% run expect for the time trials, so its nice to see you finally play this one. You can only play as a Donkey Kong in this game but each of the side kick has an unique ability to help you on the way (Dixie is still my favourite). If you collect all the secrets pieces and find the hidden portals there's really hard bonus stages in every world that feel like playing kaizo mario, so it would be fun to see you tackle those! :)
I LOVE this! Tropical Freeze is an amazing game, and to see one of my favorite players enjoy it so much is just awesome. I hope Ryu finds time to continue it! I'd love to see it. So much depth in just two levels! :D

I finally started watching your play through of Tropical Freeze and I don’t regret it at all. I was laughing so hard watching the first raw time attack of level 2. This game is awesome to watch a pro play.

This is one of my favourite games, and I've been playing it since 2014 and haven't beaten the time trial record on stage one. Shows how much of a GAMING GOD Ryukahr is!

This game is so good, it took me a long time to finally beat it since I got it on release due to difficulty. The game gets frustrating for sure with how many lives I lost, but playing co op with a friend definitely helps and the level design is top notch.

When I was a kid I played the original DKC trilogy and when I got older I played this with my little sister who enjoyed it as much as I did back then. I love this game a lot and I'm happy to see my favorite youtuber play it!
It may seem like this game has a lot of secrets but that's what makes the DKC games stand out. Since game 1 they've been full of insane secrets and that's half of the charm! =]
I've beaten this game about 9 times 100%. For a few weeks, I held second place time on the final boss (I have no idea how I did that lol).

I was listening to some video game music while working and a song from DKC:TF came up and I was rocking out to it. it reminded me of watching this playthrough from you and, if my memory serves me correctly, the number of times you got into the songs while playing. I decided to throw the playlist on and have it on in the background while I work.... First video... first few seconds... Ryu's rocking out to the music!!!
