This whole dialogue is great. You get everything you need to know about the main character and his background without anything being out of place or forced. Vito is scary, but he's scared of John. Vito also owes John for his current success.

They loved me! I think they just felt safe whenever, I was around. Nothing would happen to them on my watch. I'm ex-military, I'm always searching for threats! They could see that. I even protected them from each other! Lol
This is what sets apart John Wick from any other protagonists. Imagine getting introduced by the side of the antagonist making you look like the real evil of the movie

Someone made a vlog about how this is one of the best villain introductions in history. Clearly John's the protagonist but he has no hero's journey to go through. He's already fully powered up so to speak. It's a very well executed scene where you get the sense of dread without even fully knowing what Wick is capable of
