Please don’t end Mail Time. It’s one of my favorite features on your channel. I love seeing what other photographers are producing and inspires me to stretch my photographic boundaries. It also builds a sense of community for all your subscribers and separates your channel from all the other “run of the mill” photography channels on UA-cam.
I will be sad to see if this is the end of Mail Time. But I also admire that you want to take it to another level. No matter what it is going to be, I always appreciate your work Ted!
Love the mail time videos, especially since you began adding some critiques. These are my favourite videos from your channel! They allow all of us to learn, and I have learned a lot from them. Evolution is great and necessary to keep ourselves from stagnating. I look forward to how you evolve this feature of your channel and I hope you keep the elements that make it great!
Just wanted to say that I learn a lot from your critiques and from seeing the work of photographers who I would otherwise never encounter. I'm sure that however this evolves will be great too, and you will bring us still more eye-opening experiences. Thanks for all you do.
CHANGE IS GOOD!!! You are hard working and in touch, and often ahead, of your audience... in any case I'm sure what you evolve to will be innovative and interesting. Having said that I have enjoyed your comments about the works you've discussed and critiqued... they have been helpful and instructive. I'm sure thoughtfulness and teaching will continue to be of interest and value. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the feature, Ted! I seriously can’t thank you enough for all your work on this channel & for inspiring countless photographers. Feels so surreal!
As a part time librarian who's processed tens of thousands of books, can I just say that 300 isn't that much. If they take up too much space, donate them to a library or school. Like the Cross Of Coronado, they belong somewhere that people can see them. Apart from that, it's a bit of a unique selling point for your channel and I enjoy seeing the work that you show that people send in.
Ted, I completely understand your urge to do something 'more' with this. And then we have your first book here. A young lad entirely inspired by YOU and specifically, your film videos. Next thing you know he sends you a book. I can only imagine his joy to be featured on your channel. In a world flooded with the same camera, "I only have the pre-production version of course" reviews your channel stands out as so genuine when it comes to the work of people who contact you. There isn't an algorithm for authentic..yet side note...don't tell my wife how much I've spent on books you've so far recommended. Please.
I was honored a couple weeks ago by your review and the wonderful comments and fair well presented critique. I look forward to what the future of the this format brings. The works you present are so awesome and many are moving. Each one presented is an educational experience.
As someone who has submitted 2 books, I would be happy with the pay-it-forward idea. Maybe a box/shelf in your reception with a note explaining what they are and that people can take them if you want.
Thanks for all those years of presenting the work of viewers ;-) As a viewer for several years, I would like a lot that you talk/teach about the artistic process. As a passionate photographer, that’s the type of content I am looking for! Maybe you have learned one or two things with Ralph G. ;-) I also would like to ear more about your personal work and your own process :-)
I subd to the email list a while back. So far the mails have always been relevant, pertinent and thought-provoking. I'm not a fan or "more email", but Friday isn't Friday for me without a note arriving in my inbox.. Thank you for the effort and work that goes into them.
I have been into street photography for decades both academically and photographically. For me, the image on the cover of Sonder is incredibly unique. Most of us when looking at a specific genre of photography recognize images from a common perspective. For example, in street photography seeing darkened silhouettes of pedestrians against walls, etc is very common. But the image on the cover and better illustrated in the book is something I have not seen before, very special and original in my opinion. I have a habit of grading images when I see them, you know - grades A, B, C, D, F - and occasionally I hand out A+'s. The cover image of Sonder deserves an A++, very original (and we all know how hard it is to be original in photography).
When you "asked" us to subscribe to the mailing list, you were as convincing as my wife when she "asks" me to do something. I've therefore immediately subscribed.
I’ve been also shooting on “What I’ve got” Ted….I’ve got an Alaskan Glacier Cruise coming up in August “11-17th”, and 2 days at the end will be spend in the city of Seattle….I’ll be using a Nikon D5300 Red Body, with my Tamron 18-270 all in one lens …
Can't say that I am a big fan of mail time on a frequent basis. I miss the more art oriented videos that you had earlier. A superficial look/critique of other works doesn't add much bandwidth for me (doesn't mean that it isn't key for others). The gear reviews are done by virtual every youtuber. I get that gear review are watched more than "art of photography" videos because people feel that buying new gear will make them great photographers. In addition, it lets people feel vindicated that they have the right gear and are better than those that chose the "wrong" gear. Also the manufacturers provide early gear to youtubers doing gear reviews. I often go back to your earlier videos where photography seemed to be a bigger component of your videos. Of course I eagerly wait for videos that you still do that concentrate on the art of photography. So, I'm appreciative of your work, at times inspired by it and watch all your videos. This whether they "speak to me" or not. One learns all kinds of ways. Thanks!
Ted, what about a different channel? Or part of the blog with links to mail/works collection? Love the channel and your passion. Keep up the great work.
If the library at your studio becomes unmanageable have you considered donating some of the contents to a local public library, or perhaps the library of a HS or Community College that has a significant photography program for its students?
Those Olympus cameras used by O'Connell - the C5060, C7070, and E300 - they may be cheap older digital cameras, but I have the C5060 and E300, and they still produce surprisingly beautiful images that often need next to no editing in post. On a more general note, I really loved all the books you showcased today, Ted, and I very much agree with your feedback. Cheers! //Rick
Interesting, I have been subscribed to the Crit House for a relatively short time and enjoy it. It crossed my mind, Ted when watching the Crit House, that you would make a greeat contribution if your were on the Crit House at some point. I enjoy mail time a lot and interested in how it will transition.
I tried to signup for your newsletter but got this message "There are errors below". Not sure how there could be an error, there is only 3 lines. I tried it 4 times with no luck.
Praise on someone using cheap digi cameras and saying you encourage such work/the equipment doesn't matter from a Leica user who continually justifies it 🤣 Good work in there though.

I really like that collection by Matthew Right. Really nice clean work, with no affectations. It's calming and also oddly nostalgic.
Thank you very much!! Truly means so much

Hi Ted! Damn - Kaj O’Connell’s book is fantastic. Frenetic, reflective, and fun - it really flowed image to image. Already looking forward to more
Thank you so much! Looking into printing a second edition. Perhaps this summer.
Amazing work again and you had me there for a second - glad you have big plans for this segment, excited to see where it might be going!
Enjoyed your presentation....thank you. Not surprised Kaj's book is sold out: gorgeous work.
Thank you my friend!

I love how the resemblance to Michelangelo's Creation of Adam painting imbues the photo a sense of grandeur.
And it was done with an iPhone.
Loved seeing you review Matthews book! He's a wonderful photographer.
