Without God, all you have is the self. What this leaves you is that you now have to become God in order to fill that void. It's amazing how when I was an atheist, I followed this pattern to a T. What a wretched state it was, not noticing how in the dark I was until I experienced the light. When you give up force, you can truly experience things. When you abandon pride, you can learn to truly flourish. It's hard abandoning pride. It follows you in all sorts of little ways; it creates so many little lies that you learn to follow. And, it prevents you from truly living. Think of how Tolkien contrasts good and evil in Lord of the Rings, evil as this thing that uses force. What you try to grasp you push away. What you let be comes to you. Atheism, as I experienced it, was profoundly related to pride and force, with an elevation of truth - but truth only as I understood it, as I painted it on reality without realizing what I was doing.
@@hellomate639absolutely absurd. Without God we still have literally everything we had before. We still have each other (for better or worse), loved ones, a world, a universe. It sounds like your problems were to do with being underdeveloped as a person, not to do with lacking theism.
@@spitfire184 You call it "absolutely absurd"? Is that not a hasty judgement for such a brief conversation? You, as a human being like the rest of us, have nothing and no one. Nothing is yours. All that is yours will be taken from you. You are borrowing everything - your time with your loved ones, your time with your hobbies and passions. These things will pass. You might think you can create meaning, but your mind is always aware of the emptiness of it, even if you've hidden this from yourself. You're making some pleasure and pain, and adding some pleasure and pain in others, who will, in their finitude, also pass. Otherwise, they're just doing arbitrary things. But, say you and everyone lives forever; it's not even clear that this really solves the problem (as Wittgenstein put it). You're just doing arbitrary things that make pleasure happen. Hypothetically, we could plug into a pleasure matrix and never see our family members again, because it's just an illusion to care about family, right? You could plug into a matrix that makes you forget your family, and feel intense pleasure forever - why not just do that? I'd argue that it's rationally absurd not to, assuming that you will be secure in this pleasure and will never tire of it. Life is fundamentally meaningless without God, as meaning is just as absurd as God. But, reality is also absurd, hence why there's an entire branch of existential philosophy devoted to it (absurdism). How's that for absolutely absurd?

I'm an atheist but there is something truly beautiful about believing that when you die you will go and see all your missed loved ones. Like how can anyone hate people believing that?
Well, I hate rhetorical questions, so I'll answer... The existence of an afterlife where everything is perfect could undermine value of real human lives. The narrative that "Things get better after you die" may be comforting, but it could also lead to some people being dismissive of others' problems "It doesn't matter if you're suffering now, because when you die you'll have eternal happiness", that kinda thing. Or it may encourage people to live "safer", less fulfilling lives, because they don't think that their mortal life is that important anyway. E.g. "[Chasing my dreams] is unnecessary because once I die I'll be happy anyway". And with many religions, heaven (which I assume you're describing) comes bundled with the concept of hell, and judgement. Eternal damnation. I personally feel that the possibility of eternal hell is more existentially frightening than the idea that nothing happens after we die. And then you've got to consider all the arbitrary rules religious people have to follow. It isn't just "be nice to people'", there'll also be stupid rules damning behaviours which are totally fine (i.e. homosexuality is a sin, masturbation is a sin, eating pork is a sin, etc ). But I digress, because you didn't mention hell or judgement and religious rules. A religion without those and just with heaven is possible. Still, without hell, people might become upset that some evil people, like serial killers or dictators, get to go to heaven.
@@thomasfisher4833personally, I find the idea of eternal punishment no matter how bad the crime to be morally abhorrent. I’m not sure anyone has a perfect system of punishment in mind, but there could at least be some kind of punishment for crimes we’ve committed and THEN we go to Heaven

Sure, a few people who are ignorant or bigoted in the name of God doesn't mean all religious people are bad, hell my parents are religious and I don't think they're evil. Just very susceptible to propaganda and lies. But if in a certain region or country crimes in the name of God are prevalent, there's a child bride on every corner, politicians are calling people perverts, mentally ill, child abusers, danger to society without anybody calling them out on their bullshit then you have a problem. This is the "Good Nazi" argument. Sure, not every German was a genocidal maniac but Hitler is invading Poland. I don't think the personal opinions and morality of certain good people mixed with a group of bad people matter that much if you have tanks rolling through other people's countries.

Some atheists out there arguing so hard that they don't believe in something without realizing how insecure it makes them seem
@@hellomate639Not really. I get on just fine without theism with respect to, y'know, not turning into Max Stirner.
@@hellomate639absolutely absurd. Without God we still have literally everything we had before. We still have each other (for better or worse), loved ones, a world, a universe. It sounds like your problems were to do with being underdeveloped as a person, not to do with lacking theism.
@@hellomate639 beautifully said
@@spitfire184 You call it "absolutely absurd"?
I kind of want to see how upset this makes militant atheists in their spaces. They're going to have a hard time communicating how they feel without saying something that's already in the video.

@@cgme9535 He wasn't referring to his muscles... 😳
