How to Design Foam RC Plane Plans - Part 1

- As my promise when I reached 50K subscriber I will make a tutorial on how to design, so here it is guys, part one of them. The tutorial will divided into 2 parts, first will cover about basic modelling and how I model from 3 view drawing and photo to 3D model, this episode is for you that still learning on 3D modelling. Part 2 will cover about how to convert 3D model into printable plans than are ready for use to build our RC plane.
I will use 2 softwares : Blender for 3D modelling and Inkscape for prepare the 3 view drawing
The model I choose is Zenith CH750 Super Duty, I hope it will not hard to model and build. After releasing this video I will start building it, so after this I will make a video of building and flying the RC plane that I model here.

Yes!!! At last!!! :D I tried to design my planes in fusion 360, however there's too much BS options and it focuses on mechanics rather that simple design :) As for blender - it always scared me, but I knew that's the proper way to do it ;) Thanks for adding this tutorial, love the calm and simple way you describe all the steps - can't wait for part 2 :)

I used to design using Sketchup when it was free and then moved towards Fusion with frustration. After this video, I believe Blender is a way to go.

Great modelling. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and familiar with Solidworks, AutoCAD, CATIA, CREO, Inventor. My preference is SOLIDWORKS and easier for me to use. But the procedure is similar from software to software. I forgot to mention that you are BRILLIANT!!!!!!

@@JuliusPerdana Professor Perdana, Have you tried using Plastic Corrugated Sign Board for Assembling Models? I'm going to give it a shot for the Sky Arrow using your plans.
@@garyhilson7220 I don't know never try it, it will be heavier but I believe it can still fly, but you need 35 motor and 4S battery

For the side, top, and front views I like to create a bounding box that has this wingspan, length and height, then scale the view to fit the box.
Hi Julius, Once you have completed your Blender plans, how do you export it to print. How do you adjust the size for printing it large? Adding the cut lines, etc?

I tried to use the Blender Software, it is hard to make a model plane specially the cowling because of its curvature, how did you learned blender

Forgot how fun Blender is. I've switched to Fusion 360, but may go back if printing plans and flattening is easy.
I use Blender just for modelling. It's free, so many can have it, but for converting to 2D plans I use Pepakura Designer, so it doesn't have to use Blender, in fact you can do this on any other 3D modelling software.
Do you design the spars and internal electronics inside of blender

How choice airfoil that perfect for rc plane on mass
I always use Clark Y airfoil for many of my planes, you can also modify it by squeezing or stretching that airfoil

Wow this is well done, and can we do the animation or simulation this model?
yes you can, many use it for animation. My approach on making this 3d model is as simple as possible, utilize flat surfaces as many possible for easier building with foam sheet, so for animation I think this model still too simple.

3D printed planes have different approach on the modelling method, this one cannot be use for 3D printing

yes you can, you also might want to install 3D Printer Plugins on your Blender so you can check your model 3d print friendly or not.

@@JuliusPerdana One thing on the flaperons, on the full scale they are in two sections and the out board section is up 3 degrees this allows the wing to be built flat with out wash out. And yes the horizontal is an upside down airfoil, when the airspeed drops below 35mph it takes every bit of it of elevator.
