73 year old granny here who found a pair of speakers at the swap shop wanting to make them work with my old stereo. Your video still rocks after all these years. I hope hey have been kind to you!
Thanks man. I’ve been trying to do this for days. I didn’t understand how to hook up any of this. I’ve been trying to hook up my 12” sub to my speaker wires because I don’t have a nice head unit. Even my buddy was trying to help me figure it out but we’ve been completely dumbstruck about it. Than we came across a miracle. That’s your video man. This video was exactly what my buddy needed to remember that this is possible. Seriously, if I didn’t come across this video I would have gone home and cried to myself because we didn’t get it figured out. I owe you a million thanks for sharing this video. Every other UA-camr was no help to us. But you were different. You are blessing. Thank you for being such a kind young man. Thanks again. Thank you.
So glad I came across this video. Just finished setting up my home theater, and found an old subwoofer in my garage that I thought was shot. Switched out the fuse and it worked! The only issue was I needed a subwoofer cable that’s at least 25 feet and all I had was a 15 footer. Thanks to this video, I stripped down a few random rca’s that I no longer needed and used that! Now I have “dueling” subwoofers and a huge smile. 😁
I appreciate this dude. Thanks a lot. I get so sick and tired of asking a search engine how to do something, they point you to a forum and you get all these idiots talking about goofy sh** except what the hell you want an answer for. They have too much time on their hands. Thanks again
I decided to pull out my old KEF PSW 2150 subwoofer that's been collecting dust for years. I'm fairly handy with basic connections, but I have never spliced open an RCA male jack. I needed to connect them to speaker wire as you have here. Thanks from Hong Kong!
I just found an radio/CD player system and the speakers would be really nice to have on my PC. Plus, it was still in the box untouched after 4 years of sitting in my storage room forgotten. Thanks for showing me how to make use of them.
If I did exactly this any idea why it wouldn't be working? Do I need to have the 5.1 decoder turned on on the amp or can I play normal 2 channel and still get woofer sound?
Could you plug the split RCA cable directly into the speaker? or do you HAVE to connect it to regular speaker wore? Basically, I Have VERY long RCA cables, could I use only them and bypass the speaker wire?
Thank you so much!! I’m not tech savvy whatsoever and had been married my entire adult life until recently so I had someone to do these things for me in the past.. I kept coming across irrelevant videos as I wasn’t sure of the terminology to even search for and am happy I took a chance and clicked on your video… I believe this should help me hook up speakers that have spring hookups to my little record player which has a single red and white RCA holes… I think anyways… 🤔 Wish me luck!
If you have two speakers and are trying to make them go into the one, aka monaural, you just need to combine the two positives and the two negatives from the two speakers and then join those with the rca or monaural
This video was exactly what I was looking for on you tube. Took me a while to find it. Never knew about the two wires inside. Now I can hook up my 150 watt AR's to my tv. Thanks.
Nick Pavao As far as I know your receiver has 2 ports outs for two different subs. This will still work if that is the case. Just make sure its a powered sub or you have an amp hooked up too.
Yeah same here man I got a Vizio surroundsound I just wanted to know if the two little speakers with the one wire has two wires where I can connect some speaker wire to it because I don’t wanna cut into it if it doesn’t
I currently have 4 built-in ceiling speakers that are bare wires that are connected to a stereo receiver with red and black tab/clip type inserts. is this video the method for converting them to RCA type connectors and if not can you tell me how to do all for speakers?
Thanks man. My receiver or optical wire crapped out on me. I am at the store buying a new one and it only has rca outs.so I have to convert. How often to those optical wires go out? Or do you tjinks its my device? Guess I have to test amd see
I have two bose speakers I wanted to connect to my TV, the speakers have the red & black wire connectors in back. No Sub. So confirming if I take the two speaker wires coming from the bose speaker and pig tail them both onto 1 white RCA cable. since I have two speakers, do I connect all 4 speaker wires to the 1 white RCA? Not much into electronics so forgive me if that didn't make sense ha, hope it did though.
+Kathleen Smith That would complete the connection and would work, as long as the tv puts out enough power to the speakers they should work and sound good
I have one speaker wire. I need to make one positive RCA and one negative. How do I do that? Do I just connect the positive speaker wire end to the center post of the red RCA cable and the negative speaker wire to the center post of the black RCA cable and completely disregard the ground on both?
After you convert speaker wire into RCA's can you then plug them into a after market car amplifier if you're head unit doesn't have RCA basically do you have to use a high to low power converter?
I have a Mitsubishi tv vs big screen tv. I'm trying to hook up regular speakers to my tv.the speakers have no jacks.and where in the back of the tv would I plug the jacks
Thnx that helped alot with my Sony STR-KM5000 as the original Monaural audio cable (from amp to subwoofer) decided to let go. However there is a bit of a static sound even when no audio is playing, do you perhaps know what may be causing that ? Regards
Yes, all the colors are the exact same, its just a color system so you dont get it mixed up. the only difference is the red will have a red or pink plastic case in the center. After you bind the wires I always put electrical tape over it so it doesnt come lose or short anything out
hi J Robling, thanks for your reply my message.i need to ask you again , when i check my speaker am very compose because my speaker have two different color wire. blue black wire is super woofer speaker input and red black wire is front speaker input. witch one i connect to the cable wire. nd its alright i connected that to my LG Digital tv high difination
Hi! I have a 5 ch sony speaker system. (Out of an old Stereo). I wish to use all (Woofer, subwoofer and a tweeter). Unfortunately, my TV has only two RCA sockets. Can I connect them all(speakers) to my TV??
sniperman129 You can use any color you want, they are all the same under the plastic cover. They just use different colors to make it easier to tell the wires apart.
I believe I have the exact same receiver and I am trying to do the exact same thing. I soldered mine together and put heat shrink tube over it so I know the connection is good. However I am still not getting anything out of my subwoofer. I have never used the receiver before. It was given to me by a friend to use in my garage. I'm thinking maybe it's as simple as a setting on the receiver? Please LMK if you have any ideas. Thanks
Why didn't you use the wire strippers on the first part? while you were cutting it with a razor knife, I was wondering why you didn't get a pair of wire strippers, and then the next step you had them.
Bro do not do this with a Onkyo!! You can ruin the amp. Amps aren't made to receive a amplified signal. I have a Onkyo TX-sr604 and I love it and all the options it had. Onkyo are great..
I have the exact same amplifier and connected the subwoofer following your instructions. But I can't get any kind of sound out of it. Can you help me out?
Do you need to connect the rca cable via the speaker wire. Or can you just directly connect the striped ends of the rca wires into +and- ports on the speaker?
Not sure if someone asked already but would this work for my sound bar that has a "sub in" connection? I'm looking to add a bit more bass to my system using an old subwoofer. Btw it's a Vizio sound bar if it matters. Thanks!
Since i am using a pair of bookshelf speakers, That'll be 4 plugs to convert into left and right RCA's? ( Because there are only 2 slots ) Unless each are uniquely for left and for right? And how?
Yes Mahal kit you can. The only thing you need to look into is the watts output and input. Don't want it too high to blow the speakers or too low to get poor or no sound
This answered ALL of my questions. Just traded cars and finally said enough with the line out converter which i could NOT get to work for jack squat. Testing this method out to get my rca inputs to my amp. THANK YOU!
King Kuma so you mean to tell me this works cause I’m about to try it I can’t get my amp and sub to play in my car I used a 2 line outs and then janks don’t work at all
think I could do the samething in a 01 tahoe with factory stereo ? I have 2 12s and a amp,. im trying to avoid spending more cash on a line out converter
Hey! So my problem is as follows: I have a receiver that outputs the signal it gets from the TV/CD player etc through speaker wire to the speaker. The main problem with this is that my speaker only has RCA input. Is it possible to follow the same steps as in the video and make this cable, to upgrade to an RCA input? To clarify, my receiver outputs using speaker wire, and my speakers can only accept RCA wires. Thanks!
+Dustin Sandler you can use this method to split the rca to a positive and negative so it will work and also you can use my videos to reverse and make positive and negative wires to rca, the only research you need to do on your part is to make sure that the watts are going to be sufficient to power the speakers
+J Robling thank you! I believe my speakers could overall use about 50W per channel, max, and my receiver outputs 140W total... therefore I am going to assume this strategy is going to be successful! Thanks for your help!
I have speakers and tv. What else do I need? I see I need to convert optical to rca from tv output but do I need a amplifier or will the converter work alone?
If trying to connect a powered sub to a stereo receiver, does it work going from speaker wire from stereo to rca plug on the powered sub input? If the sub wires have an output of 200Watts would it put the amp in the sub in danger? What’s the typical rca output even measured in? ...but really does it work going from speaker wire output to rca input?
Hey this was super helpful, especially for a girl (ok 52 year young gal, LOL) cuz we are trying to get speakers from RCA receiver to our TV which comes through computer. (No TV just computer so no antennae) but right now have computer to TV, and speakers are from receiver to computer. Very confusing but the receiver does nothing except give us access to the speakers. Maybe trying to get speakers to TV w/o using receiver.....anyway, that is how we found this video and we are new subscribers so thanks!! Kristy in Missouri :)
I'm thinking about using a "RCA F Female to x M Male Splitter Y Combiner Plug Cable" to turn my line out (red and black) into something more similar to what you have (one black rca). I really don't know what I'm doing, if someone has any advice please help! Appreciate
Guto Niemeyer It sounds like you have a good idea of whats going on. From what im hearing you need to take the positive and negative and combine them into the single monaural. So the splitter sounds perfect
Great video, I didn't know that the copper wire surrounding the plastic wire inside of an RCA cable was just the ground and that the actual signal was inside those thin color coded plastic wires, thanks.
So correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had an RCA cable long enough, you wouldn't need to splice it correct? You could just strip the end, separate the +/- and connect the raw wire to the sub, correct?
Hey I was in the same situation as you. The only question I have is that I have 22 gauge wire and a powered sub woofer so would i need a bigger gauge wire or can i stay with the 22 gauge? Thanks for the great video.
I had no luck with this my active subwoofer through LFE to my Sony AV receiver works fine through the sub Port on the back of the receiver I tried what you did in the video with a normal sub and it just does not produce a sound I get nothing does this actually work for people or is this video fake as my receiver looks exactly the same as yours but mines black it's the Sony str-de585 ???
I have speakers and tv. What else do I need? I see I need to convert optical to rca from tv output but do I need a amplifier or will the converter work alone?
Thanks this is exactly what I needed all the other videos were the opposite that I needed expect yours I’m tryna put car sub as subs for my home theater 🤣
Okay but im trying to go from aux to rca so I can plug it into my amp. I tried actual rca cables that had an aux in or an aux jack itself to try an make it work but I my sub constantly buzzes, do you know how to eliminate the buzze
Do you have to attach speaker cable of can i just strip one RCA cable and put those wires directly into my subwoofer? The cable is long enough and i don't want the messy looking taped wires...
if you strip the end of the rca you get the positive and negative wires, which are the same as the positive and negative in the speaker wire, so no you dont need to add wire to wire.
I subbed u.Dude, I have an old useless thingy, or speaker that have wires instead of that white thingy that is supposed to be put in a subwoofer mentioned in the video. I want to make that port into a3.5 mm jack to use it with my phone, what should I do?
Say i have a ac wire white and red and at the end of it you can connect a aux wire could i use the red and white wiring inside and connect it to Speakers without any thing else
Can I use this method to connect a powered subwoofer with only RCA Line In to a receiver that only has a speaker-wire out for a passive subwoofer? Would the 150 watts that is output for the passive subwoofer damage my powered sub as I will be feeding it to the RCA line in?
Are you sure that it is only for a passive subwoofer? most receivers don't have enough watts to push a woofer. If it is meant for a passive I wouldn't connect a powered woofer because I don't know if it would be rated to handle the added watts.
Yes its only for passive as it is an all-in-one receiver. My concern is the same too but don't you think an RCA Line-in shouldn't draw any additional watts and only the frequencies. Or Watts should only be conducted if the end point had the circuitry for it. I have no other way to connecting the powered sub to this receiver.
I have never come across this situation, but I would assume that the all in one receiver has a built in amp to power a passive sub, meaning the output would be much higher for that port. I wouldn't feel safe doing that due to risk of the powered amp getting damaged. You could try to bypass the internal amp in the powered sub
Yes. In theory, if you have a 30 foot RCA wire & wanted to convert all you'd have to do is splice the very end - as you see in the video - and connect the ground and positive. I don't think he had a long enough RCA wire to do this w his sub so he did the next best thing. Great video btw.
I have 2 old Phillips speakers which have exposed wires but i want to connect them to my TV. The problem is I can't tell the difference between the 2 wires that come out from the speakers as both look the same to me. Please help
You can check it with a battery. Have a wire go from the positive end of the battery and another from the negative side of the battery and touch them to the speaker, depending on it the speaker pops in or pops out will tell you if it is the correct positioning or not. ua-cam.com/video/aP_4-r4Hk-o/v-deo.html
Question: can i make the RCA cable for subwoofer that is passive (not powered)? becuz i have marantz 6.1 DTS amp, it has 6 channels for left/right and surround speakers but no woofer, the woofer one is RCA type input located above the speakers section, help pls ... i have connected my subwoofer to centre channel and it doesn't sound like it should
The subwoofer can only be placed in a designated subwoofer port, or it will sound weird like you said. If it is put into a regular speaker output then the woofer will be treated as a normal speak and not a woofer. No, you need to push extra power to the sub, which is why I said an amp is needed for that application
@J Robling i have a old car stereo but with no speakers. I also have a woofer which is of 17watt. can i connect the car stereo's speaker wire to this woofer piece. Thanks much for reading this.
Most car radios will put out around 50 watt so it can power it. If it is just a woofer the sound might not be that great and some radios come with sub outs just for woofers
Thank you Sir! Great tutorial, where I don’t have to subject myself to the misery of having “experts” pussyfoot around giving a definitive explanation. Again, kudos!

+Brady Hettinger do you mean just use a long rca wire withe the male end and just the positive and negative split on the other?
+J Robling Yes, would that work.. or do I need to attach it to regular speaker wire?
+Brady Hettinger nope. The two wires inside the rca act just like 2 normal speaker wires. So you are just fine to use it like that
Thank you so much!! I’m not tech savvy whatsoever and had been married my entire adult life until recently so I had someone to do these things for me in the past.. If you have two speakers and are trying to make them go into the one, aka monaural, you just need to combine the two positives and the two negatives from the two speakers and then join those with the rca or monaural
J Robling so we just combine those to one rca only??
hey dude can i apply this to 7 speakers?
To add RCA to were in TV or set top box
After you hook the rca plug to your speaker wire can you plug it into the audio out port on the back of a TV and it will work or not? Thank you
I tried and didn't work
This video was exactly what I was looking for on you tube. Took me a while to find it. Never knew about the two wires inside. Now I can hook up my 150 watt AR's to my tv. Thanks.
My reciever has 2 pre out ports for the subwoofer marked 1 and 2. Will this method still work?
Nick Pavao As far as I know your receiver has 2 ports outs for two different subs. This will still work if that is the case. Just make sure its a powered sub or you have an amp hooked up too.
I have two wires each for my right and left speaker. How can connect them to one rca cable going into my tv??
CAN anyone tell me how to hook up that
I am also having two speaker wires red nd white how to connect it with tv

I have one speaker wire. I need to make one positive RCA and one negative. How do I do that? Do I just connect the positive speaker wire end to the center post of the red RCA cable and the negative speaker wire to the center post of the black RCA cable and completely disregard the ground on both?
What are those blue cables connect too are they connected to the positive and negative in subwoofer or did u connect them to the REM
After you convert speaker wire into RCA's can you then plug them into a after market car amplifier if you're head unit doesn't have RCA basically do you have to use a high to low power converter?
So can you use the same cables(red & white) for the 2nd speaker.
Victor Rodriguez Yes, All of the RCAs are the same on the inside, just copper wire. The color is there so you can easily identify which one goes where
I just cut the white rca that i have and it doesnt have the wire that is covered in plastic, i only see one wire.
Would this help with connecting to a TV for sound? Also, would black electrical tape be good to keep the wires together?
Many people on here have done that, you can use electrical tape but remember that it is possible for it to come apart.

I don't have subwoofer channel, can i do like in video and put it in the left or right audio output? Thanks
My amplifier doesn't have an audio out subwoofer (black rca), instead it has a line out (red and black rca)...can I do something to work it out?
How to know which wire is positive and which is negative on the speaker cables ?
does this make the sound quality substantially worse? (both the pigtail method and the other one)
+Erich Schmid either method isn't going to make a sound difference but the gauge of the wire will
So correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had an RCA cable long enough, you wouldn't need to splice it correct? You could just strip the end, separate the +/- and connect the raw wire to the sub, correct?
Absolutely correct
@@JRobling thank you!
Hey I was in the same situation as you. The only question I have is that I have 22 gauge wire and a powered sub woofer so would i need a bigger gauge wire or can i stay with the 22 gauge? Thanks for the great video.
sniperman129 I have run 22 gauge wire with a sub before and it worked but if you want better sound I would get a bigger gauge
Stumbled across this vid and was exactly what I needed. I know it’s old, but thank you.
Is the black usually ground or red? Thanks for the video!
Black is ground
Okay but im trying to go from aux to rca so I can plug it into my amp. I tried actual rca cables that had an aux in or an aux jack itself to try an make it work but I my sub constantly buzzes, do you know how to eliminate the buzze
Do you have to attach speaker cable of can i just strip one RCA cable and put those wires directly into my subwoofer? The cable is long enough and i don't want the messy looking taped wires...
if you strip the end of the rca you get the positive and negative wires, which are the same as the positive and negative in the speaker wire, so no you dont need to add wire to wire.
how do you know which is the positive and which is the negative? (on the speaker)
Can this be connected directly to a TV ?
How do I know which one is the negative and the positive in my speaker’s wire ?
I subbed u.Dude, I have an old useless thingy, or speaker that have wires instead of that white thingy that is supposed to be put in a subwoofer mentioned in the video. I want to make that port into a3.5 mm jack to use it with my phone, what should I do?
Finally a video that shows clearly what the person is doing!
Thanks, J!
I have an Coaxil. How can I convert that to an RCA White and red cable?
Say i have a ac wire white and red and at the end of it you can connect a aux wire could i use the red and white wiring inside and connect it to Speakers without any thing else
Wow this is so great! Been looking for a way to connect RCA cables to my receiver which has only bare wire input. Thank you for the clear explanation!
Any chance, I could use butt connectors, instead of the pigtail method to connect the wires?
of course, as long as the wires are making a connection you can use whatever.
what if my output is two (red and white) jacks should i wire both to one and then to sub?
Same prob!
Hi there,
Good informative video.
Appreciate it.
When I have 2 open wire speakers? How can one connect to tv with right and left speakers?
Thanks!
I know this is old, but is the reverse also possible? What If I wanna turn an Analog subwoofer into a Speaker wire? Is that possible?
I have a rca home theatre sub n it has a power wire how does that week I tryd your splicing the rca cable
+Zayna Turner an extra power? Or power for the sub?
I misplaced the Bose speaker cables and was going to replace them with some I found on eBay.. not anymore, you probably just saved me a hundred bones
Keyam
Yellow one its same from inside?
Can I use it?? Thanks
What if the RCA CORD has 3 wires inside. Ground, red, white?
Will it works for 5.1 channel speaker?
can i just use the RCA + - wire for the speaker?
Hey my speaker got a red wire and a blue wire which one do i connect
Thanks J Robling. that was a quick reply.
Thank you Sir! Great tutorial, where I don’t have to subject myself to the misery of having “experts” pussyfoot around giving a definitive explanation. Again, kudos!
Hey i have speakers which have 2 cables to work through FM and i want to work it on mobile Can I cut earphones wire to make an aux
