@@musik4life24 there's not much of a good reason to get the DS1 over the DS2, there's a DS1 setting on the DS2. But in my opinion, you can't really nail the 'John Sound' without the DS2 dimed.
John Frusciante has a unique style and Jimi Hendrix is obviously a big influence. I found an interview on UA-cam where he explains his technique of muting certain notes/strings when strumming a chord. The Masters make it look so effortless and easy but there are endless subtleties is their technique.
This is more how the Anderton's videos should go (in terms of letting Dave actually have more say over dialing in the sound versus Lee dialing in the sounds, which seems counter to the concept a bit).
I've thought that as well, but then I thought maybe it was Lee's way of not stepping on Mr. Dave's toes (regarding content like this that he releases on his channel)? I think if someone who wasn't already a Mr. Dave fan had the choice between several hours of in depth discussions with insightful playing examples OR a fifteen minute video where he gives Lee the run-down on the what's and why's of the pedals he chose, it might stop some of those people ever viewing Mr. Dave's channel. I dunno, probably not... but maybe?
@@kevinhill6079 Sure, I don't think Anderton's would post a 40 minute tutoring session like this gem, but I wish they would let Dave turn the knobs. Dave is just playing, Lee is setting the sounds (and sometimes he will overrule what Dave says too). Just odd, but I get it, it is Lee's channel.

While that's the most common way to interpret the line "Pay no intention to the man behind the curtain' there is a deeper level of insight to be found in that quote that's often missed: An insight that's rooted in the Goffmanesque type of approach to impression management - and it's tied to what I actually wrote... See referencing Dave as the wizard behind John's curtain reveals a more sympathetic understanding of the 'man behind the curtain'. Remember, while a mere mortal stood behind the curtain he was a good man, and one who had a talent of philosophising and instilling self-belief in others. In other words, it was the man - not the wizard - who helped Dorothy and her friends to achieve their goals of returning to Kansas, and developing courage etc. Unfortunately, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that one can never play like John Frusciante because he is often described as this type of messiah figure. Just think about how many times we've read such statements as "John Frusciante is modern day Jesus Christ", or “I hate when people compare John Frusciante to Jesus. I mean, he’s great and all, but he’s no John Frusciante. However, what Dave has done through his humble approach to guitar teaching is to demonstrate that with enough committment and dedication to learning the minor pentatonic (and some extensions of it), and investing in some relatively inexpessive gear, one can sound and play like John. So, while John has developed this God-like caricature in recent years, Dave demonstrates that John is not some sort of magician on a stage, but a man who works tirelessly behind the scenes to create amazing melodic music, which in my eyes, is wizardry in itself. And it is for these reasons, I've always and will continue to encouage people to check-out Dave's channel.

18:44 All of John's cabs (1960A and 1960B stacks; his mics are on the 1960Bs) use Celestion G12T-75 speakers, no matter the condition. 19:41 Though we don't have the luxury of such, we have some information of where the sound goes after the mics. For example, during the recording of Californication (your favorite JF era), the mics (SM57s and U87s) went to Neve 1073 EQs (from a Neve 8038 desk), then Urei 1176 compressors, before going to the master tapes, according to engineer Jim Scott.
@@TimMer1981 only if we can swap Clapton for Eric Gales or Peter Green... I know Clapton's a powerhouse of a guitar player, but he has that same thing about him that John Mayer does. I can't describe it, but I can never get into what they're playing when they're solo. (I'm just ribbing you in good fun, not trying to be a prick.)
To me, his most important, most crucial pedal is the Boss CE1. The original CE1 has an always-on preamp (which works even when the chorus is turned off), that hits the front end of his marshalls. So it creates the crunch that caracterizes his clean-ish tone, and also adds a lot of compression (which is also very important for him), and above all it limits the volume. That’s what allows him to put all his dirt boxes at full volume on 10 (ds2, big muff, fuzzrite) and the MXR micro amp at 12 oclock, and sound the way they sound when they are maxed out (cause if you do that without a limiter at the end, you would have huge volume jumps but he can put his micro amp which he uses a lot without any volume change). Also that limiter allows him to switch between guitars without having to compensate for pickup output differences (singlecoil/humbuckers/filtertrons). Also the buffer on the CE1 (at the end of his signal chain) brings back some sparkle to his tone after pluging his 30 pedals in serie. His whole (unconventionnal) approach for his rig is based on that principle; having a very compressed (And volume limited) crunchy clean sound at the very end of the chain (created by the plexi + CE1 preamp combo), and piling maxed out distortions and boost pedals on top of it (josh klinghoffer did it a bit differently; he used an Xotic EP Booster earlier in the chain to boost the amp and compensate when he uses singlecoils, and he puts a boss CS2 last in the chain for the necessary compression). And i can imagine Frusciante sitting on this floor back in the days trying out chorus pedals and finding that discovery with the preamp, and he never came back from it. Last time when he played at that wedding (or something) he brought a couple pedals, but he surely came with the CE1 because its so crucial and mandatory for him. And this summer when he will tour, maybe he will have new boxes (pedal world has changed a lot since 2007…), but i bet he’ll still have his trusty CE1 at the end of the chain.
You can get a lot of his chorus sounds out of other Boss choruses and also the DOD fx65 chorus he used on BSSM. His two most crucial pedals are definitely the Boss DS 2 turbo distortion and the Ibanez WH10 wah.
I went to GIT in Hollywood with John end of '87 and hung out with him for a while. He was playing stuff like Steve Vai with ease at the time. He left school after about 3 months and not long after got the gig with RHCP.
I've had the pleasure of jamming with Flea, but have never met John. Wish i could have played with him but of course no. I did talk guitars with Josh though. Another fun and informative video, Dave!

2 years !? If you haven't done this yet get Rocksmith for Xbox or playstation or PC whatever system you have and play that instead of video games! Play you guitar instead of video games ! Also get a cheap looper pedal and you can loop 3 chords and make music just like Dave ! You can get a killer looper $50 just look at eBay !

This was an excellent video Dave. 👍😎 I also took it a step further as it applies to just about any person's fav guitarists. And that even having exactly the same set of pedals there's obviously the amp(s), settings & recording gear etc. We just don't know how John or anybody else actually sounds like in a room. So, pedal companies want us to buy to 'sound like', & it may help, but there is always so much more that is often forgotten about and leads so many on endless gear searches and endless frustration. Wow, that's Frusciante spot on. Way better than your Andertons "sounds like Frusciante" vid (which was good..). I'm noticing that, in louder sections, the pick sound is part of the overall feel. Perhaps one day I'll sound a fraction as good as you.

Great content Dave. You're the first Player I've watched explain how a cranked amplifier effectively changes how the OD/Distortion sounds due to Tube Compression. All greatly important for shaping a desired tone. Also glad you mentioned how the SM57 kind of cleans up some of what your ears hear in person. So enjoyable to have these often overlooked factors stated and explained. I've been playing guitar since the mid '70s and knew these aspects of tone chasing but don't hear them mentioned very often. As you stated, Live Sound is most likely an entirely different experience.
Luv the jam and the geeky stuff. Honestly, I had thought that most of the recording nowadays was just direct and most everything was processed in a DAW. Luving the tech side. Keep on rocking. ✌️
very good video as usual, i like that many people are doing videos about john's tone. If you take some advices everywhere you can nail it and understand it better but in different ways. Love the videos from will gallucio and kentaro kiuchi too. Will is more in the "technical" aspect of the tone, kentaro in the pure precision/exact settings and you are more in the feeling/emotionnal thing of it. keep going dave, i hope we will have future update from you about john's tone from next album ;)
Hey dave another excellent video mate like others just stumbled across your channel recently and very helpful in deed my rig currently i have is a marshall mg50fx amp i got last year a fender tele black version boss ds2 and a crybaby gcb95not one of the greatest of players lol can do songs like the kinks nickelback rockstar etc and do the opening riff to dani california and like you am a massive john frusiciante fan been listening to him since the 90s my all time favourite guitarist so like others i wanna re create hes tone when i get around to learning chili peppers songs one day just not sure what else to add my rig what i currently have but watching these videos mate along with your amp guides especially the marshalls is helping a lot to understand how they work and how to set them up properly hence even better than having a proper teacher keep up the great work mate 🤟✊👏

Dave, the other day, I asked what kind of pick you use. You use the same as Frusciante. Which got me thinking. Maybe I should figure out which picks my inspirations use. Maybe if everyone did this, it would get them a little closer to the sound they hope to achieve, as small of a detail as pick size might seem.
God there’s so many things I’d love to add to the conversation of John’s tone but I’ll just add this. Although it’s not entirely necessary, the Past FX preamp crunch can give you even more control in obtaining his tone. As long as you have your amp set to a semi distorted tone as you stated before, all you have to do is adjust the gain on the pedal and you can get tones from BSSM to SA. Probably one of the best pedals I’ve ever bought to sculpt that gnarly Off the Map - Sir Psycho outro tone. You are the best Dave thank you for all you do, Mr guru of everything Frusciante of the tube!
Man Dave I usually dnt gravitate towards strays but all yours look awesome. And honestly..I love my cheap sg clone but strats I thing are the most ergonomic and or comfortable guitar to play..I jst need to find the right one .I have a strat with a small headstock somebody painted blue .I might strip it but I dnt want the old owner to get mad. But it is mine..lol. Your the man dave ..I'm sorry for the long messages I jst feel like your a good man and it's so rare these days I like to tell people when they stand out for the better..
As always great job, Dave. After listening to Black Summer, I can't help it, but Frusciante's sound in that number reminds me of Hendrix's tone at the Rainbow Bridge concert... (I suggest checking out: Sound test.(Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge)
One thing I've noticed is that John's tone is extremely dark. Like trying to raise up treble to cut through better just doesn't work. I then realized that you actually cut through better when you have treble cut way down. I have Treble on 0 and Presence only on 4 on my DSL and then I also have a Golden Plexi with the tone turned all the way down. At first I always thought that it sounded way too muddy and dark with the tone turned down, but after listening to John's master tracks, his guitar is not bright at all. Very dark and warm sounding. And another thing I noticed with the Golden Plexi is that when the tone is all the way down, it cuts some of the high frequencies off much like the real CE-1 does. So that thickens your tone up considerably while also cutting out a lot of the harsh treble frequencies that the DS2 has. It's kind of funny how the average person might think John's tone is very trebly and thin, but it's the complete opposite of that.
hey Dave.....today it has happened----I GOT TOPLAY a sunburst 1961 Strat and a faded red 65 strat!!!! into the ORIGINAL OWNERS 66 twin reverb!!!!! it was alot to take in man. I was painting his big house when i spotted a Hummingbird on the couch, he is a retired session legend in my country/state Victoria, Australia. man you so would have dug the 61 man. Regarding your curiosity with what Johns amp in the room would actually sound like…… i think you already have a good idea, although i can understand wanting to no the exact feeling you get from being there in the room. I like kentaro kuchi’s video where he shows you what each amp sounds like before it is blended. Yes these are still the Mic’d tones but it’s still a great insight into how each of the amps sound slightly different with the reverb giving them both space to breathe. If you get your hands on one of those triungulo major remakes you’ll have to borrow your mates jubilee and experiment some more … we would all love to see.
Dave, Dave, Dave. I've been watching your great channel for a long time now and have been playing guitar for over 50 years now. On every video, I wonder, is Dave going to mention John Bloody Frusciante again? I'm going to be perfectly honest here, up until yesterday I had never heard or seen John Frusciante play. So, yesterday and today I sat and watched about 20 videos of him. At the end I thought, well yes, he's a good guitarist, but nothing that special. To me he doesn't even come close to people like Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kossoff, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee, Dave Clemson, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, I could carry on and on. I honestly can't see or hear what you think is so fantastic about him? I know that it's a matter of taste but honestly and I not kidding here....you are just as good, if not better than he is! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how I felt. Cheers. 😊😎🎸
Frusciante is a great guitarist from a technical standpoint but, more importantly, his playing aligned perfectly with the RHCP songs he performed on. It’s more about how Frusciante fits into the RHCP formula. Many guitarist have played Frusciante’s exact licks within the band, as replacement guitarists, but have never captured the magic that only JF can. If RHCP music doesn’t capture you, neither will JF’s playing. The two together form a complete package. With that said, I agree about Dave. If he had the right songs with the right band, there’d be nothing stopping him.
Of all the guitarists you listed as more impressive, only Hendrix has as many or more memorable songs to the average Rock fan. Frusciante has written songs people recognize in two notes

I was speaking in terms of a wide cross section of the public, not guitarists. People recognize the first six notes of Layla, and it's the same thing when people hear the first two chords of Under the bridge. Frusciate's riffs have filled arenas and stadiums around the world for 30 years.

However, if you are talking about a wide cross section of the general public rather than musicians, then I categorically believe that the vast majority regardless of age would not even have heard of John Frusciante let alone know any of his music. I.m also sure that the majority would have heard of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. However, I'm going to ask around over the next few months and see for myself. 16:00 I think this is true LIVE, but in the studio his tone is way cleaner. Check out his isolated guitar tracks from anything from Californication to Stadium Arcadium. It's actually way cleaner than you think IF you've watched alot of his live stuff. Especially in 1999-2000 his live "clean" tone was ridiculously gainy.
Dave I think you are a decent human being and watch some of the vids and been playing 38 yrs snd since my wife passed away I play 4 to 5 hours sometimes. But these 30 min + solos can just be a bit over the top . I don't know if it's an ego thing or what but why not do some lessons that could help starting out young lads as I will say one thing 🤔 your pretty good at that . Sorry not trying to knock you but I feel you have more in you than some of these long solos and a good teacher. All the best on your journey

I did see some off the Peter Green stuff you done and did like your dave gilmore vid with the lights. You would be an absolute legend of a guitar teacher and sorry to learn about your pain splitting up with your ex and your guitar helping. The lose of my wife was awful and nearly had a relapse as our band in the late 80s drummer had a habit an bless mats soul it took him and we couldn't move on . We had an abandoned old small hospital we lived in and had a great big room or massive room and spent hours jamming... I stupidly tried Mr brown stone like a fool and sold my Gibson but still at it . . I must have a good look about on some of your videos mate .I didn't mean no malice
Dave, do you know if JF ever used an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff pedal? Cobain, Corgan & Rivers Cuomo used them. Cobain & Cuomo also used the DS-2 in their chains. Just wonder if those other guitarists might have influenced JF to use one temporarily.
I wish rig rundown would let Dave Simpson analyze John’s rig for us. Yet, it may be like a magician revealing his tricks.. Maybe we should never know exactly how he gets his tone..
Excellent Video and beautiful playing on the jam. Dave, I have a question. In your „happy birthday John Frusciante“ video from 2020, you used a clean sound at the end with, I guess some delay. The part sounds so like the empyrean record. Can you explain how to get that tone?
I had to build myself an all American Fender partscaster with a Custom Shop 69 loaded pickguard just to play like Frusciante. I tried using my Gibson Les Paul but there was just something off about the sound of the Les Paul. I learned that John Frusciante just always has the MXR Micro Amp on when he uses his strat. I use an LPB1 boost pedal for my strat and turn it off when I switch to my Gibson Les Paul. It is really important to realize that Frusciantes tone is a clean Marshall amp with a Fender Stratocaster!
dave you seriously need to get the wilson effects ten spot 2 (wh10 clone i'm sure you know).... new one even has mods for the bass mode. frusciante is even using a wilson modded wh10v3 now, i confirmed with kevin wilson on it. it's a perfect clone in a vox style enclosure, and you can control the volume boost, it's soooo good, i just bought a second one just because. they're on sale now too. GET IT AND REVIEW IT. just trust me, you will love it i guarantee.

I’ve seen the Red Hot Chili Peppers un 2005 at the Dallas Smirnoff Center, they were headlining with Snoop Dogg. I was practically in the front row. I could hear the band in front of me and they sound just like the album. It was not over the top, it was not less. It was the same thing as the album. He didn’t make up any licks on the spot or change any of the solos. Sometimes he changes the solos in the songs. Just like the By The Way Album
26:40 microphone or microphones does do huge difference in sound we percieve about Frusciantes "tone" . Californication live sounds like its really closed miced but off center.
I use a boss katana 100with the stock settings and I'm amazed how versitile it is I use it an hour a day for two years and I'm still finding better tones

Hi Dave, awesome video! You are using an older MG model right? Because I'm using a (i think 2019 or so) MG-50 and used your exact settings, though not a separate cab, and the volume control of the DS-2 did not work for me. Did anyone had a similar experience and has an idea on how to fix it? Currently I try to control it with an Boss OD-3 right after the DS-2, but I think it shapes the sound a bit too much.
Hi Dave, regarding the micro amp and your reference to its use on the Hyde park gig to create a dirtier tone, are you saying he uses it before the amp as a boost to combat signal degradation? I do own one but tend to use it in the fx loop just for a volume boost for solos and I always figured that's the function he'd use it for. I wouldn't have thought it being used in the loop would add any gain and would just give a level boost for solos. Just curious as I never thought to use it before the amp as I figured it's just going to dirty up the signal and we have overdrives for that. Great video once again and you really are closer than anyone else I've heard to his tone, much kudos sir.

There is a video of you setting up pedalboard with Zoom on it and you have a notebook (not just papers) and you also talk about setting up other pedals (Jackhammer i think, Boss DS 2, Ibanez WH 10) like minimum pedalboard for JF tone.

@@plomatheusnunes The katana 100 mk2 is ideal because you get the effects loop if that's something you need. Also don't worry about it being 100w. The .5 watt setting is ideal for bedroom playing which is where I play mostly
What kind of marshall mg are you using dave? I bought a boss katana mk2 50 when i started but maybe i should buy a marshall Because i looooove john frusciante but don't know to much about amps yet.
On Slane castle Frusciante switched from 50watt triode switch to 100watt pentode on silver jub. thats one off the reason its sound a little cleaner . I noticed that he never played fullstacks, only upper two cabs on californication era till 2004, then he switched to lower 2cabs , that could be because amps got louder from 2004 so he didnt wanna kick his brain out.
Whenever I play my guitar with any RHCP CD it always sounds like the CD whenever I use the MG100, but whenever I use the MF350 with the Plexi circuit it sounds better but not like the CD

I think if someone who wasn't already a Mr. Dave fan had the choice between several hours of in depth discussions with insightful playing examples OR a fifteen minute video where he gives Lee the run-down on the what's and why's of the pedals he chose, it might stop some of those people ever viewing Mr. Dave's channel.

Anderson’s is a business after all. I think it’s great that they’ve had the good sense to invite Dave into their already well established format. To me this is a win win situation. There are a lot of positives.

See referencing Dave as the wizard behind John's curtain reveals a more sympathetic understanding of the 'man behind the curtain'. Remember, while a mere mortal stood behind the curtain he was a good man, and one who had a talent of philosophising and instilling self-belief in others. In other words, it was the man - not the wizard - who helped Dorothy and her friends to achieve their goals of returning to Kansas, and developing courage etc.
Unfortunately, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that one can never play like John Frusciante because he is often described as this type of messiah figure. Just think about how many times we've read such statements as "John Frusciante is modern day Jesus Christ", or “I hate when people compare John Frusciante to Jesus. I mean, he’s great and all, but he’s no John Frusciante.
Of course they are not meant literally, but I feel such statements can lead one to believe that to play like John Frusciante one needs to posses super-human or mythical-like powers. However, what Dave has done through his humble approach to guitar teaching is to demonstrate that with enough committment and dedication to learning the minor pentatonic (and some extensions of it), and investing in some relatively inexpessive gear, one can sound and play like John.
So, while John has developed this God-like caricature in recent years, Dave demonstrates that John is not some sort of magician on a stage, but a man who works tirelessly behind the scenes to create amazing melodic music, which in my eyes, is wizardry in itself.
And it is for these reasons, I've always and will continue to encouage people to check-out Dave's channel.

19:41 Though we don't have the luxury of such, we have some information of where the sound goes after the mics.
For example, during the recording of Californication (your favorite JF era), the mics (SM57s and U87s) went to Neve 1073 EQs (from a Neve 8038 desk), then Urei 1176 compressors, before going to the master tapes, according to engineer Jim Scott.

The knowledge you have Dave is still mind blowing after 5 years of following your channel
To me, his most important, most crucial pedal is the Boss CE1. The original CE1 has an always-on preamp (which works even when the chorus is turned off), that hits the front end of his marshalls. So it creates the crunch that caracterizes his clean-ish tone, and also adds a lot of compression (which is also very important for him), and above all it limits the volume. That’s what allows him to put all his dirt boxes at full volume on 10 (ds2, big muff, fuzzrite) and the MXR micro amp at 12 oclock, and sound the way they sound when they are maxed out (cause if you do that without a limiter at the end, you would have huge volume jumps but he can put his micro amp which he uses a lot without any volume change). Also that limiter allows him to switch between guitars without having to compensate for pickup output differences (singlecoil/humbuckers/filtertrons). Also the buffer on the CE1 (at the end of his signal chain) brings back some sparkle to his tone after pluging his 30 pedals in serie. His whole (unconventionnal) approach for his rig is based on that principle; having a very compressed (And volume limited) crunchy clean sound at the very end of the chain (created by the plexi + CE1 preamp combo), and piling maxed out distortions and boost pedals on top of it (josh klinghoffer did it a bit differently; he used an Xotic EP Booster earlier in the chain to boost the amp and compensate when he uses singlecoils, and he puts a boss CS2 last in the chain for the necessary compression). And i can imagine Frusciante sitting on this floor back in the days trying out chorus pedals and finding that discovery with the preamp, and he never came back from it. Last time when he played at that wedding (or something) he brought a couple pedals, but he surely came with the CE1 because its so crucial and mandatory for him. And this summer when he will tour, maybe he will have new boxes (pedal world has changed a lot since 2007…), but i bet he’ll still have his trusty CE1 at the end of the chain.
You can get a lot of his chorus sounds out of other Boss choruses and also the DOD fx65 chorus he used on BSSM. His two most crucial pedals are definitely the Boss DS 2 turbo distortion and the Ibanez WH10 wah.

I went to GIT in Hollywood with John end of '87 and hung out with him for a while. He was playing stuff like Steve Vai with ease at the time. He left school after about 3 months and not long after got the gig with RHCP.

I also took it a step further as it applies to just about any person's fav guitarists. And that even having exactly the same set of pedals there's obviously the amp(s), settings & recording gear etc. We just don't know how John or anybody else actually sounds like in a room.
So, pedal companies want us to buy to 'sound like', & it may help, but there is always so much more that is often forgotten about and leads so many on endless gear searches and endless frustration.

All greatly important for shaping a desired tone. Also glad you mentioned how the SM57 kind of cleans up some of what your ears hear in person.
So enjoyable to have these often overlooked factors stated and explained.
I've been playing guitar since the mid '70s and knew these aspects of tone chasing but don't hear them mentioned very often.
As you stated, Live Sound is most likely an entirely different experience.

very good video as usual, i like that many people are doing videos about john's tone. If you take some advices everywhere you can nail it and understand it better but in different ways. Love the videos from will gallucio and kentaro kiuchi too. Will is more in the "technical" aspect of the tone, kentaro in the pure precision/exact settings and you are more in the feeling/emotionnal thing of it.

Hey dave another excellent video mate like others just stumbled across your channel recently and very helpful in deed my rig currently i have is a marshall mg50fx amp i got last year a fender tele black version boss ds2 and a crybaby gcb95not one of the greatest of players lol can do songs like the kinks nickelback rockstar etc and do the opening riff to dani california and like you am a massive john frusiciante fan been listening to him since the 90s my all time favourite guitarist so like others i wanna re create hes tone when i get around to learning chili peppers songs one day just not sure what else to add my rig what i currently have but watching these videos mate along with your amp guides especially the marshalls is helping a lot to understand how they work and how to set them up properly hence even better than having a proper teacher keep up the great work mate 🤟✊👏

Dave, the other day, I asked what kind of pick you use. You use the same as Frusciante. Which got me thinking. Maybe I should figure out which picks my inspirations use. Maybe if everyone did this, it would get them a little closer to the sound they hope to achieve, as small of a detail as pick size might seem.

God there’s so many things I’d love to add to the conversation of John’s tone but I’ll just add this. Although it’s not entirely necessary, the Past FX preamp crunch can give you even more control in obtaining his tone. As long as you have your amp set to a semi distorted tone as you stated before, all you have to do is adjust the gain on the pedal and you can get tones from BSSM to SA. Probably one of the best pedals I’ve ever bought to sculpt that gnarly Off the Map - Sir Psycho outro tone.

And honestly..I love my cheap sg clone but strats I thing are the most ergonomic and or comfortable guitar to play..I jst need to find the right one .I have a strat with a small headstock somebody painted blue .I might strip it but I dnt want the old owner to get mad. But it is mine..lol. Your the man dave ..I'm sorry for the long messages I jst feel like your a good man and it's so rare these days I like to tell people when they stand out for the better..

As always great job, Dave. After listening to Black Summer, I can't help it, but Frusciante's sound in that number reminds me of Hendrix's tone at the Rainbow Bridge concert... (I suggest checking out: Sound test.(Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge)
One thing I've noticed is that John's tone is extremely dark. Like trying to raise up treble to cut through better just doesn't work. I then realized that you actually cut through better when you have treble cut way down. I have Treble on 0 and Presence only on 4 on my DSL and then I also have a Golden Plexi with the tone turned all the way down. At first I always thought that it sounded way too muddy and dark with the tone turned down, but after listening to John's master tracks, his guitar is not bright at all. Very dark and warm sounding.
And another thing I noticed with the Golden Plexi is that when the tone is all the way down, it cuts some of the high frequencies off much like the real CE-1 does. So that thickens your tone up considerably while also cutting out a lot of the harsh treble frequencies that the DS2 has.
It's kind of funny how the average person might think John's tone is very trebly and thin, but it's the complete opposite of that.

hey Dave.....today it has happened----I GOT TOPLAY a sunburst 1961 Strat and a faded red 65 strat!!!! into the ORIGINAL OWNERS 66 twin reverb!!!!! it was alot to take in man. I was painting his big house when i spotted a Hummingbird on the couch, he is a retired session legend in my country/state Victoria, Australia. man you so would have dug the 61 man. Regarding your curiosity with what Johns amp in the room would actually sound like…… i think you already have a good idea, although i can understand wanting to no the exact feeling you get from being there in the room.
I like kentaro kuchi’s video where he shows you what each amp sounds like before it is blended. Yes these are still the Mic’d tones but it’s still a great insight into how each of the amps sound slightly different with the reverb giving them both space to breathe.
If you get your hands on one of those triungulo major remakes you’ll have to borrow your mates jubilee and experiment some more … we would all love to see.

I've been watching your great channel for a long time now and have been playing guitar for over 50 years now. On every video, I wonder, is Dave going to mention John Bloody Frusciante again?
I'm going to be perfectly honest here, up until yesterday I had never heard or seen John Frusciante play.
So, yesterday and today I sat and watched about 20 videos of him.
At the end I thought, well yes, he's a good guitarist, but nothing that special. To me he doesn't even come close to people like Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Kossoff,
Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee, Dave Clemson, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, I could carry on and on.
I honestly can't see or hear what you think is so fantastic about him?
I know that it's a matter of taste but honestly and I not kidding here....you are just as good, if not better than he is!
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how I felt.

Frusciante is a great guitarist from a technical standpoint but, more importantly, his playing aligned perfectly with the RHCP songs he performed on. It’s more about how Frusciante fits into the RHCP formula. Many guitarist have played Frusciante’s exact licks within the band, as replacement guitarists, but have never captured the magic that only JF can. If RHCP music doesn’t capture you, neither will JF’s playing. The two together form a complete package.
With that said, I agree about Dave. If he had the right songs with the right band, there’d be nothing stopping him.
Of all the guitarists you listed as more impressive, only Hendrix has as many or more memorable songs to the average Rock fan. Frusciante has written songs people recognize in two notes

However, if you are talking about a wide cross section of the general public rather than musicians, then I categorically believe that the vast majority regardless of age would not even have heard of John Frusciante let alone know any of his music.
I.m also sure that the majority would have heard of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

16:00 I think this is true LIVE, but in the studio his tone is way cleaner. Check out his isolated guitar tracks from anything from Californication to Stadium Arcadium. It's actually way cleaner than you think IF you've watched alot of his live stuff. Especially in 1999-2000 his live "clean" tone was ridiculously gainy.
Dave I think you are a decent human being and watch some of the vids and been playing 38 yrs snd since my wife passed away I play 4 to 5 hours sometimes. But these 30 min + solos can just be a bit over the top . I don't know if it's an ego thing or what but why not do some lessons that could help starting out young lads as I will say one thing 🤔 your pretty good at that . Sorry not trying to knock you but I feel you have more in you than some of these long solos and a good teacher. All the best on your journey

I did see some off the Peter Green stuff you done and did like your dave gilmore vid with the lights. You would be an absolute legend of a guitar teacher and sorry to learn about your pain splitting up with your ex and your guitar helping. The lose of my wife was awful and nearly had a relapse as our band in the late 80s drummer had a habit an bless mats soul it took him and we couldn't move on . We had an abandoned old small hospital we lived in and had a great big room or massive room and spent hours jamming... I stupidly tried Mr brown stone like a fool and sold my Gibson but still at it . .

Dave, do you know if JF ever used an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff pedal? Cobain, Corgan & Rivers Cuomo used them. Cobain & Cuomo also used the DS-2 in their chains. Just wonder if those other guitarists might have influenced JF to use one temporarily.
John does use the big muff every now and again.

Dave, I have a question. In your „happy birthday John Frusciante“ video from 2020, you used a clean sound at the end with, I guess some delay. The part sounds so like the empyrean record. Can you explain how to get that tone?
I had to build myself an all American Fender partscaster with a Custom Shop 69 loaded pickguard just to play like Frusciante. I tried using my Gibson Les Paul but there was just something off about the sound of the Les Paul. I learned that John Frusciante just always has the MXR Micro Amp on when he uses his strat. I use an LPB1 boost pedal for my strat and turn it off when I switch to my Gibson Les Paul. It is really important to realize that Frusciantes tone is a clean Marshall amp with a Fender Stratocaster!

dave you seriously need to get the wilson effects ten spot 2 (wh10 clone i'm sure you know).... new one even has mods for the bass mode. frusciante is even using a wilson modded wh10v3 now, i confirmed with kevin wilson on it. it's a perfect clone in a vox style enclosure, and you can control the volume boost, it's soooo good, i just bought a second one just because. they're on sale now too. GET IT AND REVIEW IT. just trust me, you will love it i guarantee.

I’ve seen the Red Hot Chili Peppers un 2005 at the Dallas Smirnoff Center, they were headlining with Snoop Dogg. I was practically in the front row. I could hear the band in front of me and they sound just like the album. It was not over the top, it was not less. It was the same thing as the album. He didn’t make up any licks on the spot or change any of the solos. Sometimes he changes the solos in the songs. Just like the By The Way Album
26:40 microphone or microphones does do huge difference in sound we percieve about Frusciantes "tone" . Californication live sounds like its really closed miced but off center.

I use a boss katana 100with the stock settings and I'm amazed how versitile it is I use it an hour a day for two years and I'm still finding better tones

Hi Dave, awesome video! You are using an older MG model right? Because I'm using a (i think 2019 or so) MG-50 and used your exact settings, though not a separate cab, and the volume control of the DS-2 did not work for me. Did anyone had a similar experience and has an idea on how to fix it? Currently I try to control it with an Boss OD-3 right after the DS-2, but I think it shapes the sound a bit too much.
Hi Dave, regarding the micro amp and your reference to its use on the Hyde park gig to create a dirtier tone, are you saying he uses it before the amp as a boost to combat signal degradation? I do own one but tend to use it in the fx loop just for a volume boost for solos and I always figured that's the function he'd use it for. I wouldn't have thought it being used in the loop would add any gain and would just give a level boost for solos. Just curious as I never thought to use it before the amp as I figured it's just going to dirty up the signal and we have overdrives for that. Great video once again and you really are closer than anyone else I've heard to his tone, much kudos sir.
He does use it in the front to get more gain yeps.

There is a video of you setting up pedalboard with Zoom on it and you have a notebook (not just papers) and you also talk about setting up other pedals (Jackhammer i think, Boss DS 2, Ibanez WH 10) like minimum pedalboard for JF tone.

Hi Dave! I have seen you using Fender to power your pedals on the Andertons video. Are you still recomending Voodoo Lab's power suply? Which one? Do you have the same one on every pedalboard? I am getting a lot of noise from some of my pedals and I really want to get rid of it. Do you know other budget options? Would you use them? Thanks in advance. Love the video!!
I'd recommend either the voodoo labs or the fender one. There both awesome and worth it. :)

Hi Dave!! Do you recommend the orange cr20 for the John Frusciante sound? I saw an old video that you used a cr20rt. Is there a difference between those amps for the Frusciante sound? Big hug from Brazil!!
Hey I got the cr20 and you can get the John tone, no doubt. The only difference is that the cr20rt has reverb and a tuner but it's the same amp.

@@plomatheusnunes The katana 100 mk2 is ideal because you get the effects loop if that's something you need. Also don't worry about it being 100w. The .5 watt setting is ideal for bedroom playing which is where I play mostly

What kind of marshall mg are you using dave? I bought a boss katana mk2 50 when i started but maybe i should buy a marshall

I'm using the old mgs. The mg100 hdfx but if you've got a Katana you'll be fine. :)

Why was John's tone so diffrent in Slane castle .had a really distinctive tone . That intro u could really hear pic scraps ???
Some say for intro to use : Ds2 only maxed, some say ds2 + big muff ( this sounds like zephyr song solo setup more) or ds2 with zvex fuzz.
On Slane castle Frusciante switched from 50watt triode switch to 100watt pentode on silver jub. thats one off the reason its sound a little cleaner . I noticed that he never played fullstacks, only upper two cabs on californication era till 2004, then he switched to lower 2cabs , that could be because amps got louder from 2004 so he didnt wanna kick his brain out.
Have you ever messed with the Line 6 Helix? I’m wondering if I can get pretty close to that dirty/clean tone using the different amp/mic models.
I have but I didn't like it. You can get a very good John tone though. :)
DS2 is so anti musical in 99% times, Frusciante is in that 1%. It really suits his style.
I find the DS2 dark and muddled. How Frusciante (and Dave) manages to get such a good tone from it eludes me..

Whenever I play my guitar with any RHCP CD it always sounds like the CD whenever I use the MG100, but whenever I use the MF350 with the Plexi circuit it sounds better but not like the CD
Would this work with a Tube origin 50 Marshall that’s a single channel head? By turning up the gain and turning down the volume?
