I knew this was going to be a good repair as soon as i saw the dirt floor and the sandals.
A lot of work for this nice little boat anchor.
But you also can use it as pedestal for mail boxes or flower vases.
I like the damascus pattern of slag inclusion and voids, looks very pretty.
Эту ось только в металлолом. Перегрев металла сваркой приведет к трещинам. Сама ось кривая (прямо по центру). Срез металла делается без охлаждения, что приводит к порче резца из-за перегрева. Очень большой риск того, что восстановленная деталь таким способом испортится очень скоро.
Да, ладно. Я примерно так же делал раза три. Причем не снимая ось, только сваркой и болгаркой.
Комбайн в чермет сдали по независящим от состояния оси причинам, прицеп живой и косилка до сих пор косит.

Love it steel toed sandals, no safety glasses, smoking a cig while griding, no gloves dirt floors. tooling that is subpar, and they get the job done. that's like was in the days of old in America. A small company in America spends more on gloves then all of them men make in a year.

No body caught that did they. He threw dust on the one section ,and tapped it with a hammer.. vibration resonating would show cracks threw the dust..

Heat treat is not a priority to these folks.... that truck or tractor needs to be back to work asap. they deal with the consequences later..

De acuerdo. Para que el material recupere su dureza tendría que meterse a un horno para templarlo como lo hacen en la fábrica. Si lo instalan así sin templarlo se romperá rápidamente porque tiene que soportar muchas toneladas.

The axle may have hairline cracks in it from the failure. No heat treating. A stick weld and not a wire weld? Oh my.

All things considering this was a good repair. Although at 14:15 the tapered roller bearing went onto the shaft a bit to easily.
I think with the tools they have, in many cases a sliding fit and a bottle of Loctite cylindrical retainer (601 or similar) would actually be a very decent solution. When applied properly, when the retainer is dried there is a 100 percent bearing surface on the shaft - bearing race interface and no risk of failure by fret wear.
However, in this case the inner ring is stationary so a sliding fit will probably not be detrimental, although of course factory specifications must be met. With separable bearings like the conical roller bearings used here, a press fit on both inner and outer race is unproblematic in terms of assembly. Also, in heavy machinery it is probably the better choice as the bearing is better centered and bears the load more evenly.
I am always admiring these workers for what they can achieve with limited means. But I recommend using a piece of scrap wood to protect the lathe’s bed when handling heavy objects.
+/- 2mm working tolerance.

I wonder how many workers get sucked through a lathe A year because of loose clothing. I was a machinist for more than thirty years, and heard of and saw guys get injured severely from long hair, jewelry, long sleeves, loose clothing, and improper footware.

Just practice with the torch, with some skills you wont damage the axel.,seen it, been there, done it.

Always pre-heat before welding. The shaft should be glowing dull red.

N this case, No real need with stick welding. there is no heavy contamination. With mig or Tig welding, you would have to clean thoroughly

It's not cleat to me what happened to the shaft getting those huge gouges in it. Please explain.
Wheel bearing failure
Most likely, those gouges were done with a cutting torch while removing the damaged bearing and retaining nut.
Loose clothing, a disaster waiting to happen. can only work in filth... WHY?????

These guys don't work safely (understatement). The lifting tripod that they use to hoist the axle on to the lathe looks kinda light to start with but the leg closest to the camera looks badly damaged also.

Imagine if they charged a little more than they do they could invest in decent kit, make yet more money as their productivity improved and buy some proper workout clothes and some boots

Please let us know where this is, so we can stay away from the bubblegum and bailing wire repaired vehicles. Any shop I ever worked in would fire people for doing work this wy.
How they can stand getting welding spatter and slag on their feet is beyond me. I have welded for years without gloves but gravity being what it is makes (proper) foot protection imperitive. Apart from that I have had hot pieces of slag chips start my pants smoldering a few times. Also just curious about welding electrode selection which is never made known. Metalurgically speaking, improper selection could end up in disaster.
The bottom line is that given their limited resources and repair facilities they seem to do a fair job with what they have.
The labor costs are the lowest part of running any shop in the area.

We would not see this damage in the USA. This damage was probably caused by bad wheel bearing adjustment. In USA if the driver sees oil leaking from the wheel seal, he will get it repaired. I was a truck mananic for 35 years, install wheel bearings, replace wheel seal, no damage to spindle. One more thing if you get caught in a Highway Patrol vehicle inspection, and they see a wheel seal leaking, they will red tag the truck. As far of the repair job these people are highly skilled excellent workmanship. 🤓

@@C-Culper4874 Never happened in my shop, and not in California. Also I said bad wheel bearing adjustment, in my shop I would check the wheel bearing adjustment at the request of a junior mechanic, this was a practice, because this is a critical adjustment.
@@TOONMAN200 Remember these guys are running greased hubs. Not oil bath. Running very over loaded on rough roads. If you work on agriculture equipment too you would see this or do trailer work as well.
Running way past first hint of repair required. That part would be scrap in any first world shop.

Hi folks...here's the thing...its 3rd world work in a 3rd world country. They're expecting the heat and cooling from welding to sufficiently harden their work backed up by heat transfer of machining. Labour's cheap....parts are expensive in these cut throat economies. The fact that they resuscitated the axle for further work exemplifies this... if the owner/operator gets a further 40thousand out of it while over loading as they do they'll just fix it again..and again
No one wears safety glasses, very sad

These guys do stuff that's amazing! So much with so little, they can do anything now. Don't forget the safety sandals and sun glasses if they're affluent.
Probably cost them $27 for the repair.
