David Baron Stevens This is not jazz. This is harmony used in a beautiful way with beautiful lyrics. Jazz sometimes is played to impress people with rather ugly and unsignificant dissonances. I think Bill Evans is an exception in Jazz...an architect of beautiful harmony, a poet. Maybe among the best jazz could ever have. Jobim uses harmony in the same fine way..this is poetry.Very VERY few jazz musicians will understand this.

@@TheJazzMemoir Bossa nova is definitely jazz, my friend. I understand what you mean concerning harmony, and its true that the bossa nova greats manipulate it in ways that no one else does. But to say that Evans is the only exception in jazz is so narrow ... Bossa nova is, in essence, a mix between brazilian music (samba, pop.. think of Caymmi for example) and... jazz. Gilberto and Jobim are the BEST examples of this. Also Vinicius de Moraes if you consider that half of his songs are simply 2516 progressions. Even if harmony is used slightly differently, it still VERY often revolves around some kind of 251 movement, either directly or through some alteration (thats where the difference comes in, if I understand correctly what you mean) like a Imaj Im7 7m7, relying heavily on tri subs, alterations to stay in (or to stay out) of key, chromaticism, changing keys with diminished chords, etc. To deny this is to not know jazz. Nor bossa nova...
I understand that the final product is not the same at all, of course, but they definitely have some roots in common. And it is insulting to neither of them :)

@@mo0dyy Bossa Nova is not a mixture of jazz and samba. Bossa Nova is a type of Samba.
Bossa Nova has Samba rhythms and grove.
Bossa Nova has initially the melodic structure and chord progressions that are typical of the samba. The fact that Bossa Nova got influenced by Jazz doesn't change what Bossa Nova is.
Bossa Nova is initially a cooler form of Samba with, as he says in this interview, a more positive message than what was standard back then. Samba de Uma Nota So is called "Samba" because it is a Samba. When it became very much obvious that they where sitting on a new form of Samba they called it Bossa Nova.
This is more in the style of how Bossa Nova would have first sounded: ua-cam.com/video/7c8Yc3cyu9s/v-deo.html

Amazing how much Tom looked at this time with the way of being from Villa Lobos, even smoking, like Villa Lobos, a cigar...I would like to make a statement here to that the translations from Portuguese to English, of Brazilian Bossa Nova songs made by Norman Gimbel, left Tom Jobim exasperated, because he totally escaped the poetic meaning of the songs in Portuguese, as he was only interested in the lyrics falling well with the musical notes, not caring much about the poetry behind each song, taking away much of what was meant ... just to get an idea, Gimbel didn’t want the most famous song, Girl from Ipanema to have "Ipanema "because he said it sounded like the brand of a very popular toothpaste at the time, in the USA. For our luck, Tom did not give up on Ipanema, who at the time was not even known. Tom Jobim then decided to do even more in English and got rid of the English translations that Gimbel did, - which did not take much into Tom Jobim's statements - when he did "Águas de Março - Waters of March".
In fact the lyrics for "Garota de Ipanema" in English, have nothing to do with what is sung in Portuguese ...
The letter in Portuguese is this:
Look what a beautiful thing Olha que coisa mais linda
More full of grace Mais cheia de graça
It's her, girl É ela menina,
Coming and going Que vem e que passa
On a sweet swing Num doce balanço
On the way to the sea ... A caminho do mar...
And it looked like this in English:
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes
    Goes "a-a-a-h"

It wasn't just Gilberto that created bossa nova, he only come with the softly sing and the beat (the beat he took like 90% from the song "Eu quero um samba" by João Donato).
