    Back in my guiding days, I had some hunters riding with me down highway. We came upon a car that had just struck a buck. Sweet little old lady driving, car absolutely totaled. We got out to check on her and a highway dept employee had stopped and was already talking to her. We walked around in front of the car and holy god that was a giant buck laying there. Big old gnarly non typical, 26 scorable pts. Super heavy, palmated, had like 9 brow tines and an extra beam. He asked her if he could have it and she says "hell yes you can, that bastard destroyed my car!" One of my hunters offered that guy 5G's cash money and he said no. We heard later that it scored like 238". Crazy cool buck

    I remember a teacher of mine in High School (early 80's) lamenting that they no longer officially taught common outdoors knowledge about 'the woods' like species of trees and what's edible and just good general survival knowledge. He taught a lot of it in his class but that's not what the class was officially about.

    I have always hated the idea of deductions on non typical.also only measuring only 4circumferences per antler even if it had 7 typical points on each side.🤔

    My mom shot a 13 point buck like in the late 1979's. The one and only deer she ever shot. The rack is massive but no one has ever measured it. My nephew finally got a 14 pointer a few years ago. The rack wasn't wide though so it was not measured either.

    My friend has a one antlered buck on his land. It's about 2 1/2 years old right now. I think it has three points. They just leave it alone just to talk about it

    Highest gross score of all time is a non-typical buck known as the Missouri Monarch. Found dead on the roadside in St. Louis county. I live my life waiting to be that lucky. Could you imagine if that walked out in front of your stand?

    My scoring system is "a little bigger than the last one", of course id love to bump into a giant non-typical toad but i know its not the most likely, they dont get that big and old by being stupid.

    Scoring deer antlers is no different than playing a game of pig against your buddy. You like competition and you want to beat the other guy. You can weigh an animal, measure the size of the body or measure the size of the tusks. It simply comes down to the enjoyment of competition. It’s human nature to be interested in the biggest, strongest, fastest, bestest things in their own categories.

    • @jomama969
      @jomama969 Рік тому

      People get so caught up in the numbers and ego that they can tear down the enjoyment that the hunter experienced. The story is always cooler to me. The best deer hunt of my life was with my best friend and he shot a doe and I shot a half-rack buck. The best turkey hunt of my life came from one of the smallest Toms I’ve ever shot. I’ve been on duck hunts where our crew killed 72 ducks in one hunt, yet the best duck hunt of my life was with my dad and we killed 5 mallards and a teal. Maybe it’s because some of the guys that I grew up hunting with are no longer alive, but I’d rather spend one more morning watching a sunrise with them than breaking any sort of record on my own.

      @@jomama969 I cannot argue with anything you said. But none of what you stated is an argument against my comment. If you have ever purchased a buck tag for specifically hunting and tagging a buck, you are guilty of this idea of competitive hunting. Doe are easier to hunt and taste better on average. Most states allow multiple doe tags and only 1 or 2 buck tags. So there is no reason to hunt a buck outside of more challenging and the rack. The scoring simply adds another layer to the “competition”. But as you said not to veryone values the challenge the same and tagging a 140 buck over 5 years should be more of a reward than stumbling across a 160 inch stranger buck that wandered over on opening day

    • @BossDoogles
      @BossDoogles 2 місяці тому +1

      @@adamgd34 I did write that MOST states allow multiple doe tags, especially if you’re a resident.
      So if your state prohibits you from using your buck tag to harvest a doe, I apologize for miss speaking about your state. So my comment is for “MOST” who hunt in states that allow over-the-counter hunting of doe.

    I never had scored any of my deer, but to oneself do what makes you feel good. People always dog it. We are competitive, over the 40yrs I wanted to know if i am getting good at getting to the mature bucks. Personal I’d be excited know a 6 pointer was 8 yrs old, to me that’s a trophy! Vs getter a small 8 that’s 3 yrs old. But size # is what we see on the hoof. Yeah How cool would it be to harvest 8 10 year old buck, regardless of point, I been bagged by more mature doe than bucks, just another doe thought lol😅 Have fun

    Okay, sorry but if you are feeding, and priming the environment for big antlers- its not the same as taking a natural buck. I'd rather take a little basket six point that I worked to get than to have some fake, "farmed" buck. Yes, you can farm without fences. Don't tell yourself that just because you don't have a high fence that the food plotting, hunting over bait and sniping are the same as hunting a true free range deer from the ground. Now cry and whine and call me names. I have 44 yrs of taking deer every year with everything from flintlock to my .308win and they are all honest, luck and hard work deer. Giant antlers aren't what they were when Milo shot his buck.

    And Rogan gets it wrong again... The world record is from Missouri and found dead on the tracks outside of Eureka and Pacific. It dwarfs the Ohio Hole in the horn.

    • @TheZeppelin14
      @TheZeppelin14 Рік тому +9

      The Missouri deer is slightly bigger it doesn't dwarf it in any way. Missouri deer is 333 7/8 and Hole in the Horn is 328 2/8, that's only a little over 5 inch difference.
