You guys must have some engineering background to make such straight to the point and organized videos…kuddos to you guys.
Wow, you guys really pack a lot of items, and truly make use of the R1S capabilities .... very cool ! I currently use my Toyota Tundra for camping/hiking trips and love having the tail gate for sitting, meal prep etc, so appreciate that the R1S has a split gate.
Great video. Love your sense of adventure! Keep in mind that using two mics close together will echo if you don't mute one track in post for each person speaking.
Enjoyed the vid. I think if we ever get to a point where solar charging while out can get a battery a significant bump in charge, it'll radically push EV's to the forefront. Have you considered a power station to ease some of the power demands on the truck itself, to save range?
@@michaellewandowski7596 Yeah I’m thinking of a solar power setup to try out but it’s a big investment for small power gains. But if it’s good enough to keep the car battery warm while topping up in cold temps it might be worth it.
Great video! I think there are a lot of pros but the limited range when truly overlanding prevents it from being the best offroad. Unless you are staying close to charging locations and not too far offgrid, I don't see how this allow you to travel for extended time offroad and stay at locations without running out of power. I would argue that a slightly used Lexus LX570 with a few offroad modifications (Sliders, Air compressor, Tires) is far more capable and cost effective.
Yeah I agree that range and charging is the biggest challenge, but on the west coast it’s not a big problem. Going more than 50 miles way off grid is a lot for most people and we can do that easily. Charging is getting better too so we don’t “worry” about charging a whole lot anymore. I really like the newest GX but the low mpg is a tough sell. Thanks for your comment !
@@odlanorirom Nope! No need for those under any circumstance for our situation. Some people bring a portable battery bank to use if they are many feet away from the vehicle based on their work needs. We bring an extension cord to run our heater up in the tent or to power something far from the car at a campsite.
Thank you for creating such amazing videos! We're excited about the possibility of getting an R1S later this year. Currently, we drive a Model Y Performance, and its range is comparable to the base model. We're considering the large battery option for the R1S, which offers 329 miles of range. Based on your off-road adventures and trips, did you find that range more than sufficient? While we've never been stranded, we want to embark on more outdoor adventures without constantly worrying about range or having to take significant detours just to charge. Which battery pack do you have and any regrets with that pack size?
@@jluuhalo1286 thanks for your kind words. I have the large (mid) battery with 20” AT tires. That’s the worst combination for range but we make do with all the traveling we do. Next time I would get the largest battery and street tires if we can afford it. If you plan to road trip frequently with off road tires then the Max pack is best if you can afford it. But if it’s just regular road tripping with street tires then the large pack will be sufficient. Long highway driving for hours on these batteries will reduce estimated range by 15-20%. I hope that helps.
@@RivianOverlandLife If money were no object, max battery but it is already an expensive vehicle and we may have to settle with the large. The max battery puts the car too close to 100k haha. We have made due with the 278 mile range in our Model Y so i'm sure the additonal 50 over the tesla will be a slight bit more peace of mind for us. Do you have a referral code? I'd like to credit you both as your videos only reinforced my desires to own a Rivian to take offorad instead of my tiny Model Y haha. Thanks for writing back!

Hey yall great video! Im curious about setting the interior temp while youre sleeping. Our kids sleep in the bed of the truck, but it would be nice on colder nights if we had a rivian if we could use use the app to set the interior temp to something like 65 (when its 45 outside) and how much battery that might use if our kids slept there and we slept in the RTT?
@@barelymadeit I just checked this past week and it’ll use ~10% battery for 8-10 hrs. Outside temps were 19’F. The sweet spot to keep was to run it cool between 66-68. Even less would be better if you have some warm clothes. Warming the car more is worse on the batt and less comfortable to sleep. The cool air felt way better than when we had it warm at 70.
Do you have the compact spare? I got a R1S a month ago and am going to get a hitch mounted spare tire carrier, but for now I stand up a full size spare in the compact spare space.
@@jeremyp3630 Yes I have one. I thought of getting a full size spare/carrier as well but decided against it due to space and us always bringing our bikes. The peace of mind of having a full size spare is not worth the daily hassle of dealing with it in the way.
Can I ask you to do a 80% test? Charge to 80%, drive as you do for a day or 3 and below 25%. Note the miles you drove since 80%. Top back up to 80% and calculate the miles per Kw. That is a true gauge I have an offer to buy the R1S for $91k but I don't want to trade for a Kw hog. Thanks!
Have you found a good power solution for extended trips? Somtimes im out there for a week and would love to switch to electric. Ive thought about a pv awning with a couple kwh battery for ac charging. In theory that should cover heating at night and small dc fridge while adding a few miles of range a day. Haven't seen anyone else do it and seems both heavy and expensive. But the weight would cut range.
I like that I don’t need anything extra with the Rivian to have constant electricity but yes it ultimately comes out of the range. Something like a “solar blanket” would be nice that could provide some power, add a few miles of range but also be light and easy to carry.
@@RivianOverlandLife everything just included and working like that would make it all much more pleasant. But I don't pick where the sites are. Last time was 100 miles from the nearest ccs. A pv fabric would have a lot of engineering issues and get very little power. Need rigid, flat, or almost flat surfaces that can handle wind, rain and dust storms.
