  • St Hilda's 'Over the Border'. Middlesbrough's older sister who lives by the river. Some of the pictures now need updating and i am currently, when i get the time, in the process of bringing 'now' pictures upto date. None of the 'then' pictures belong to me and i have sourced the pictures from the internet and various social media sites. Thankyou for watching. Music by Brian Eno - 1/1 and Clair de Lune

Nice film, it's really brings home the loss of all that heritage, and community. We almost bought a house there in the early 90s when that new development tried to bring families back, but it was just too far gone in terms of safety and security. Even those new house were demolished which along with the 1960s flats and original houses show the the heart of the boro has been ripped out. Quite sad but maybe nature is reclaiming its self as it was before the town was built....

This used to be my beat as a young constable 1968 before they knocked down the streets, was a rough area though.

In 1987, our college was asked to contribute photos for a brochure showing the council redevelopment of St Hilda's. They'd demolished all the slum dwellings and built lovely houses with front and back gardens with a vision for a future community living in decent accommodation. I can't understand what went wrong and why only 35 years later, it's all gone.

Hello Pamela. Sorry for the delay in replying. Thankyou for watching and commenting and I hope the collection of pictures brought back many happy memories for you. I don't personally have any family links to St Hilda's myself but growing up on its doorstep and knowing its history and importance in the birth of this area the place has always interested me. Kind Regards.

I really can't understand why they demolished the whole lot and didn't redevelop like why?? Such a beautiful place and all that's left it the captain cook and the church. Middlesbrough was so beautiful back in the day

So sad to see beautiful architecture just torn down and the area left as waste land. Council should hang their heads in shame

Beats me, some of those houses weren't built 5 minutes and then they were down again. What the hell happened.
