This is an interesting lens for sure. Which would you go with, the Tamron for less, or the Sony for a little more???
Neither, there are other lenses that do the job fine.
For me, I would have loved this lens had it of been 600mm. But it was doa for me due to only being 500… the weight difference is not significant enough for me to consider ether. So I bought the 200-600 last week.
I will be getting 200-600, should be faster focus lock on stacked sensor
I got the Sony 200-600. It has 600 end with good quality, the prime 600mm costs $12k. The Tamron can't attaches extender, so that is a no no for me.
patiently waiting for a Sigma 70-200 Art for sony
I have rented the 200-600 in the past and was blown away by the size and weight of it, but amazed by the performance and quality. I agree that the IS in the 200-600 is really good for framing. Then I rented the 150-500 last week. The size was drastically different. Bigger than my 70-180 but way smaller and lighter than the 200-600. But the image quality not much worse than the 200-600, and I didn't really miss the last 100mm too much.
Having the arca swiss on the collar is great, and it fits my Protactic 450AW ii without having to leave lenses home, compared to the 200-600 where I have to make a choice. It also doesn't draw as much attention as the 200-600 if that matters to you.
Before using it, I felt that if I ever had the budget to buy a super tele zoom, it'd only be the 200-600, but knew I'd have to worry about the size. Now I'm leaning closer to buying the Tamron.
I can’t wait to get this lens, thanks for the review 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Terrific review. I guess the question with wildlife is how quickly the lens will acquire focus on a swiftly moving animal and how well it will stay with it. I think it might have been good to see how the lens does at max magnification close up as that's the way I often shoot.
Love your videos Jared! Been waiting on your thoughts on this one. I have been renting the 200-600 for my last two projects but finding room in my bag has always been an issue. Hopefully this lens will solve that issue
would like to know how it compares to the 150-600 for the other makers.
Waiting for this review and came. 😍
Best comment ever 'I'm not actually gonna go out and sit in nature' hahahah.
.. you can't prove how good a lens is in a built up enviroment in a zoo .. in the wild where the colour contrast changes ,, as the day progresses
@@nickmathews6226 Often in the Wild stuff you are trying to capture doesn't sit for long and more often can be a fields length away . unlike a Zoo where Zero effort is required nevermind patience n luck
*sigh*
Definitely made me laugh 🤣 of course he's not going to go walk through and sit in nature
It would be nice to know which lens (compared to 200-600) squires focus faster? I’m pretty sure it’s Sony but wondering if there are any stats
Great shots Jared. Question, do you think this lens will be available in Nikon f mount? Also I would love some help with RAW Nikon D850 edits, there just seems to be so much noise? Not really a raw shooter and I am wondering if the D850 is a waste of money for me?
The giraffe’s butt had me rolling 🤣
I love when you test glass at the zoo! Great stuff Jared. Thank you.
Ayyo super new photographer here shooting with the sony a7iii . really enjoy your videos. very informative, clear and concise. and keep me entertained. well done
Bro, I like all your content because the way that you teach us.r. I learn a lot with you. Thanks for all your valuable contents.
Great video and really nice images. Those black and whites of the gorilla are fantastic and the grain (noise) actually enhances those images for some unknown reason. Thanks for your great entertainment value too, Jared. 🙂
@jared polin when shooting wildlife do you choose single or continuous autofocus?
2:30 Your guns are big but I think its the sweet fro's gravitational pull that makes it easy to keep the long telephotos light weight.
Lens collar makes a great handle when hiking around.
great video fro bro!
Will the Tamron 60-300m for sony fit the Nikon 7100. New to photography. Trying to understand glass.
Would love to see this come to the RF mount. I'm currently using an EF 100-400 tamron adapted but that extra reach and smaller size would be welcome.
Also for Z 😞
Just bought it, excited to see what I can get!
Would this work for shooting kids hockey indoors? I have the Tamron 70-180 2.8, but some rinks the glass is bad and I have to shoot from the stairs above and back from the rink. My lens doesn't have the reach. If this isn't going to work what would? thanks
This would not be a good choice for jockey. Nope. No way no how. 70-200 is perfect and 300 2.8 max.
Could you do a review of the lens on APSC sensor cameras? A6000-6400 (no IBIS)
What do you think about the rumored Tamron 50-400 mm? Looks like it could offer a lot of the same specs while also covering an interesting portrait range.
"Now that I have offended everybody..." - LOLLLLLL
wish you did some focusing speed test on some fast moving subject
Giraffe’s butt! I like your sense of humor Jared.
My question is there a way that I can shadow you? I live near you ( Lancaster County) and I am just starting out in photo and looking to learn as much as I can.
Will one of the Sony teleconverters work on this lens?
I got the Tammy 70-180, but Sony 200-600 Happy with both.
Eagerly awaiting this.... pre-ordered and immediately went to "backordered" on day 1. This was by all accounts a paper launch. They should have just waited until ample stock was available.
Shitty, I had mine pre-ordered and they ended up putting them on the floor before the release date and sold them all. Not getting this lens now because of it.
Would you say this is better than the Sigma 100-400mm for Sony??
Great photos! Did you use the Animal Eye AF or the Bird Eye AF (an option the a1 has) with the bald eagle?
Animal. They don’t have a specific bird.
I’m trying to decide if I want to buy this for Fujifilm. You get the crop factor of 750mm with it. Not a lot of content out about it for that system.
How is this compared with sigma 100-400?
How do you think this would handle concerts?
is this lens fit on my Nikon D3100?
Jared, you love boomy colors and polarizer helps get boomy colors. Is the reason you don't use them because you want maximum focusing agility?
if i were doing landscapes I probably would.
I like how the out of focus fencing looks at 14:35. It looks like brush strokes in a painting.
Angry wildlife photographers incoming!!!
Yeah
Why would they be mad
@@CrumpPump cuz he said nature is boring, you have to wait, etc...
@@Gabe310m I’m a wildlife photography. Fro isn’t wrong. Just the other day I sat waiting for 4 hours just for the birds I wanted to shoot never to show up.
You can use the x1.4 and x2.0 converters with the Sony 200-600mm. Can you use converters with the Tampon lens? Always something to consider.
no you can't
@@froknowsphoto Thanks for the reply.
Anyone had a chance to compare this with the Sigma 100-400 DG? I have one and it seems to struggle with fine-focus on subjects at a far distance.
Which one you own that struggles ? The Sigma 100-400 or the Tamron ?
@@mysteriousbigboy6744 he said sigma 100-400 dg, very explicit
Great review! What is your opinion on the Sigma 150-500 for us budget dads who shoot our kids baseball games? I'll be using it on a Nikon D7200....
the reason you take multiple shots in a row is that in the interim shots you get less shake when you are not pressing or releasing the shutter button, but just holding it. pressing/releasing adds shake.
Interesting. A small delay would also achieve this
One thing I realized that the aperture jumps back to f6.3 at some where close to the 500mm end. Zooming all the way to the end and twist a bit back like 2mm you still get f6.3 😁😁
great video... loved the sample pictures you just exploited the lens... i have the tamron trinity and want to have big zoom like this this is a little costly what do you say 100-400 sigma.. or this .. and can we expect low prices soon black friday u see :)
I just rented this and previously the 200-600. Never considered the 100-400 as I also have the Tamron Trinity for my a7iii and it just isn't long enough for wildlife, sports and aircraft. But the extra 100mm from the 150-500 is really useful. This is the super tele to get if you don't want to budget more and/or don't want such a big lens.
How good is it with captures taken between 8/10pm ?????????????... At present I use a Sony Cybershot DSC HX350 ..When i take pics most times the images turn out like a watercolour type .. basically crap . blurry unviewable pics .
Especially when i've thought i'd got good captures .. when i transfer to the PC to look at them they are just pish I delete more than i save and it's crap at taken Sunset captures .. as well
The crazy thing about this lens is, that it not only rivals the Sony 200-600 but also the Sony 100-400 4.5-5.6.
I mean this lens stays at f5.6 until 400mm - thats just nuts for this prcie !!
Combine that with the compactness, sharpness and minimum focus distance and you start to struggle justifying the prcies of the sony lenses.
I just read this comment so I thought to try it....but it doesn't go below 6.3.....
@@wilpalma725 The Tamron 150-500 only goes under f6.3 at lower focal lenghts and it probably did not work becusse you werent in manual mode or aperture priority mode.
Try it again in these modes
i like having on my tripod collar on my canon 70-200 so i can rest the lens on my hand while zooming with my fingertips, but not like tamron canon has the zoom on the inside
"Stroke the fuzzy wall"....LOL, you crack me up. (pun intended)
Well Jared...I love you playing the idiot. Flexing arms "singing" Songs. Those thinks make my day. Thanks for all that entertaining content 👌
Love this guy
YAY a new jared polin video :))))
Why are supertele lenses getting slower and slower for the same price?
Top, thanks! 👍🏼
I really do need to start using my lens hoods 😅
thanks for putting the effort of going to the zoo for the test. But, a lot of people considering this lens are going to be birders, and it would have been nice to see how well it tracks with bird-in-flight captures (especially birds flying towards you). You can do this test at any park or beach with pigeons and/or seagulls.
As for the whole thing about using a tripod/monopod, it's not whether you're strong or in shape, snapshooting is one thing but oftentimes with us birders, we see an interesting bird perched on a branch, but we're waiting for that moment for it to take off (because bird-in-flight captures are oftentimes more interesting), so we wait and wait, I don't care if you're the strongest person in the world, after a few moments, you're simply not going to be stabilized, you're going to start shaking and perhaps drop your composure just for a few seconds to rest your arms and shoulders, but for me, with my luck, that's when the bird will take off and I'll miss the shot.
A couple of things should be noted. With this non-Sony native lens, the Sony A1 will be capped at 15fps (I believe), so you won't get the benefit of the 30fps (or 20fps) that you pay $$$ for (and no... for bird-in-flight bursts, 30fps is NOT overkill).
And I don't believe it's possible to use this lens with a teleconverter
On a sony A7 M3: what is the best solution? Tamron 150-500mm or sony 100-400 4.5-5.6 lens + sony focal multiplier also 1.4 ?? this is for sports photos Thank you
My channel is all about sports videography, I can’t wait to try out this lens!
Me too! I want this lens to film football games. Great channel by the way.
Can’t believe I found you here lol. I’m a big fan.
I ❤️ Beyond the game!
Put this lens to good use E.
Will you get the Tamron or Sony or both?
This or Tamrom 28-300mm?
$600 150-600 Sigma EF used lens and a mc-11 is not bad for a budget option on a7r3. Heavy, though, because I don't have those GUNZ!
I just bought the sigma 60-600 for my a7iii and yeah..it is very heavy :( but I enjoy the workout! It’s also a very nice lens but dang people weren’t kidding about the weight. I’m taking it to the local zoo next weekend so we’ll see how much I still like it then haha.
Just bought the sigma 100-400 and I feel like the IS is stronger, just from the looks of the handheld shake
You’re such a city slicker Fro. 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Man i cant unsee the Tampon now, you said it once now i always see Tampon instead of Tamron xD
I have this lens for a couple of months now, but noticed that the keeper rate on dogs that run towards me is pretty low. It seems to back focus quite a lot with my A7III. With the Sony 135mm GM I don't have this problem... Would it be mainly the problem with the body that can't keep up with the speed of the lens at 500mm 6.7 or would it be more an issue with the lens?
I'm pretty disappointed with mine by now. My wife uses an A6700 with 70-350G and the pictures from that lens have more detail at 350mm than the tamron 150-500 at 500mm on the same A6700.
@gamebuster800 yeah I can imagine, this lens is unusable in crop mode which equals aps-c cameras
@@jeroenvdw yeah i own an A7RV and the 150-500 has noticeably less detail than any other lens I own. (including the Tamron 35-150 which is great)
I thought I just sucked, but I just tested it on a tripod shooting at a bunch of stationary houseplants with off-camera flash, and detail get noticeably better at F/9 and even then the autofocus seems to be slightly inconsistent (just enough to ruin the sharpness) while the 70-350G nails it most of the time, even when shooting both lenses at 350mm on A6700.
The A6700 with 70-350G at 350mm shows more detail than my A7RV with 150-500 at 500mm. It's just sad.
I think of selling the 150-500 and maybe buying the 200-600, or 70-200 GM II with TC. I don't care if my pictures aren't perfectly sharp with the 70-200GMII+TC because I can still use the 70-200GMII without the TC
@gamebuster800 yeah I'm planning the same, already put my 150-500 for sale. Sony 200-600 isn't perfectly sharp either but it's way better than the Tamron. Would be great if Sony launched a mk2 of the 200-600 with improved sharpness
@@gamebuster800 and I also own the A7RV now that's how I noticed the lack of sharpness
Nikon and canon pleeeeease open up the new mounts. It’s time
Yesss... The only two camera companies that are ACTUALLY professional and ACTUALLY make quality and professional cameras, not just products that cater to casual consumers and masses like Sony, Panasonic, Fuji are doing. I would LOVE to see the Sigma 85mm 1.4, Sigma 50mm 1.4, Tamron 35mm 1.4 and Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 for the Z mount!!!!
@@nogerboher5266 ...
Probably going to get this lens. seems more compact to pack in my bag. I've been considering a super telephoto lens and most likely as a hobbyist, this seems to suit my needs. Will most likely head to my local wildlife centre to test it out also (not a zoo but nearest we have locally) Will have to work on my "guns" though! lol!
What r grams?
With out a doubt, the funniest guy on UA-cam
As size and weight does matter I'd prefer the Tamron as a hobby photographer :) I waited for a lens like this to switch to Sony as my Nikon 200-500 is tooo heavy and tooo long
I bought the Sony 200-600. I never regret not getting the “almost as good” lens.
Your 200 - 600 Sony is almost als good as a 600mm F4. Think about it.
The giraffe's butt was tack sharp.
Sony's [brown] eye autofocus is amazing.
you do the duck sound very well
8:54 you are actually wrong, IF you had it in VC-Mode 1! In VC-Mode 1 it just stabilizes when you pre-press the button to take a photo. If you want stabilization all the time, please go with VC-Mode 3. :)
LOL. Funny shit. Thanks for review also!
First time I’ve had to dislike a Jared polin video, we need more of those smokin’ guns
thanks for information from timor leste
It looks like a great lens, but I’ll stick with my Sony 2x teleconverter and my 70-200. The teleconverter only cost me $500. Sure I’ve lost some reach over both, but I saved a bit of money and I’ll put the savings towards getting the 70-200 GM updated version. That is, if it ever comes out.
Eeee, we have a converter video coming out.
No need to apologize, Jared. 👍
Oh hell. Im at a car lot in Florida again.
I would go for the Sony as it zooms internally and will likely last longer. It’s also sharper across the frame.
I've been shooting with the Sony RX10m4 for 18 months, building a name for myself in the disc golf community around Philly. Actually shot a wedding and a proposal with it too. Finally got my A9 yesterday and the Tamron 70-180 2.8. The jump from 1" sensor to full frame is very real. This will be my next lens for shooting playoffs and birds in flight. My dream lens right now is the 135 1.8 GM. Looks so nice. Thanks for all the reviews and showing how good 3rd party glass can be. I'd love to bag all Sony stuff but I'm not pulling in $10k a month yet.
make video for your best lens lately , shot dog and cat inside studio it willbe awesome 😎
At 2:25 sorry but I need Atleast that 500mm lens to see what you were trying to show me..
You're fun!
Do the chickens have large talons? Gosh!
Do you even lift bro?
I use this lens religiously. It’s the best lens Iv ever used for wildlife aside from a rented Sony 600mm f4. But that thing barely fit in my back seat. This think fits in my tiny little backpack and allows me to hike many many miles in search of interesting birds doing interesting things. If I were to recommend a lens for wildlife to anyone, this would be the one. But! She still heavy as all hell.
Flamicos, and other monkeys.
Very informative
Would this be overkill for a Sony crop sensor mirrorless?
Not really no
i think im ready to switch platforms.....looking into sony....
