  • The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD is a mid-price super-telephoto zoom ideal for wildlife photography and some sports shooting. It's compatible both with Sony's full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras or with APS-C bodies in the Alpha range. Chris and Jordan took a closer look at this lens, its performance for video and its surprisingly good macro capabilities.

    If you are doing to take a lens for travel by plane, etc, then it is a no brainer. Taking that 200-600 in travel is a menace. This can easily fit into a bag pack and is optically not that much different if you don't consider the difference between 500-600. With almost $800 cheaper, I think this is a good value for money.

    I tested magnification vs focal length on my copy of this lens, and interestingly, the highest magnification is not at 150 mm, but at around 200 mm. A little longer object distance and higher magnification. Even better!

    What I would like to see in the future is: A test of a "budget" lens on a budget body.

    Just watched your review. Well done. I do have a question for you though I’m very green when it comes to photography I just ordered the same lens and I’m trying to figure out on some of your steel shots how you knew what the millimeter distance was on those particular photos, I have a Sony a7 iii and my kit lens it shows me on the display screen, the millimeters and distance but when I use a Tamron it doesn’t do that. Thank you.

    I was considering getting one of these, but then I saw the weight! I don't know if I can handle a lens 2.5x my current 70-300mm. 750mm on a cropped body sounds mighty appealing, though.

    I bought the Tamron 150-500 and if you zoom in to 499mm it will be at f6.3. Just a heads up if you are planning on buying the lens for an aps-c body, it is kinda hard to hold that combination without a battery grip.

    I've just bought this combo 2 days ago, coming from a D850 and Tamron 100-400. On my first time in the local park shooting birds hand held it felt like image stabilization wasn't switched on. I tried all 3 settings on the lens without improvement. Checking the in-camera 'Steady Shot' an alert said "Invalid with this Lens". I set the second adjustment "Steady Shot Adjust" to manual and "Focal Length" to 500mm, but I don't notice any difference. Am I doing something wrong?? Still getting familiar with the Sony menus, but image stabilization was much better with the D850 and 100-400. Disappointing. Best Alan Wilson.

    I would like you to compare this Tamron 150-500 lens with the Sony 70-350 (105-525mm equiv when using a full-frame Sony body in crop mode). If anyone has the experience, please do share. Why Sony might be preferred, is the issue of weight. Tamron is 3X heavier. 1,725g (60.8 oz) add 155g (5.5 oz) for tripod mount; Sony equals 625g (22.1 oz).

    • @PatrickWithCamera
      @PatrickWithCamera Рік тому

      Didn't test both on FF, but tested them on a6600, tamron is sharper, have more contrast and less CA @350-500 than sony @350, stabilization for photo is similiar, for video sony 70-350 better. When u compare size/weight its huge, I tought that I won't feel much difference, but 625g vs 1725g strain muscles a lot, but im getting used to it and can say that a6600+150-500 is great combo for wildlife, so much easier to sneak to animals.

      These are full-frame lenses, so I doubt Tamron will adapt them for APS-C Fuji X. In an interview, they mentioned Sony E mount and Canon RF mount as two areas of growth. My expectation is that we will see RF lenses in the near future and continued E mount releases. Sony also owns a 10% share in Tamron and is more open with the E mount platform, which is why we likely see the preference in that platform.

      You said that the Sigma 150-600mm C isn't much larger. But it is, simply because of physics. You can wish all you want, it won't change anything.

    I've been shoot telephoto with an adapted Minolta 500mm Reflex, I am sure this will be an upgrade.

    I find the stabilisation (VC) on this lens pretty useless, at least on my A7R3. The lowest shutter speed I can go at 500mm is 1/500, which is just the same as applying the '1/focal-length' rule which makes it appear the the VC is not doing anything at all. I'd be interested to know whether people find it any better on other bodies.

      I have the Tamron 18-400mm VC lens for my Nikon D7500 and the VC is not very good on that either! Nikon's VR does a better job on my other lenses.

      That sad to hear beacuse I just ordered it for my a6600 and was hoping that it has similiar stabilization to 70-350 which gives me possiblity to shoot 1/15 @ 350mm

    • @PatrickWithCamera
      @PatrickWithCamera Рік тому

      After tests on my a6600 i must say that VC is not bad, nearly equal to my 70-350, with tamron I could get lowest to 1/60 @ 500mm(750mm eqv) and get tack sharp photo. With video tamron is not the best idea, weird jumping happens.
      Want to notice that I used 70-350 with protection filter and it didn't degrade image at all, while tamron is very sensitive for filters and also dust on front glass, it degrade image quality greatly, non usable with filters or dust, no idea why, its look like shake blurr on 100% of images.

      @@PatrickWithCamera well I would guess what you are seeing there is the stabilisation of the body, not the lens.

    I've had problems with 2 copies of this lens and basically not finding it very sharp on my A6600 but I've downloaded some of your raw files and they look pretty good

      Did u tried 3rd copy and it was sharp? Or didn't try 3rd? Because I wanna try it on a6600 too and curious if it can work better than 70-350
