Solving a woodworking problem we ALL have

Fixing the engineering mistake on the DeWalt benchtop planer... its dust exhaust location. You know as well as I do that this was a major oversight in the design. Any hose that you attach droops down right where the wood is fed out and you have to lift your hose to have it not get knocked off. I designed an easy aftermarket bracket system to fix this problem. It is made from Baltic birch plywood, some common hardware and two bought components that you can get at either ‪@rockler‬ or ‪@WoodcraftSupply‬ .
Here's links to each of those:
    4" ID coupler Woodcraft:

    4" coupler Rockler:

    4" 45 degree elbow Woodcraft:

    4" 45 degree elbow Rockler:

As I mentioned in the video, leave a comment if having plans for this interests you, or tell me about another way that you solved the dust collection problems on your particular planer. I would love to get into the world of plan making for woodworking projects.
Either way, hope you enjoyed and can implement something like this on your lunchbox planer.
    See you next week!

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES! this is of grrreattt interest! And if you talk to any physics instructor worth their weight in Aerogel they would tell you that nothing in the universe actually sucks... "there is a decrease in pressure from one area to the next..." yep, I call bull shrimp on that quote--- if something sucks then well it... sucks and as much as I love my planer (aka thicknesser for our friends across the pond) the position of the dust collection sucks a$$. I have that planer. It was my first major woodworking tool purchase. A couple of years later I bought a drum sander, and that caused a semi-retirement for the planer. It's still in the lineup, but virtually never gets used. I don't plan to sell it, as I'm sure I'll need it at some point down the road. I agree that the dust port is in a terrible location. I have wondered how that ever made it to market. But overall, it's a great machine for what it does. It has never let me down. It's loud, but I wear hearing protection when working in the shop. I don't love the snipe it leaves behind (which is one reason I wanted a drum sander), and I thought this video was going to be about how to eliminate snipe. Anyway, great vid, great design, and great execution of your design. I could see this being popular enough that other owners of this planer would want plans.

Very nice! I wheel my planer next to my bandsaw (which gives up one of its hoses for the planer--thanks to magport) so that I can rest the hose on the bandsaw's table. Not nearly as good as what you have created. Thanks for the work you put in to share this with everyone.
It looks like the arm could be longer to give more attachment points for the brackets that support the hose. And if I do this, I will probably hinge the arm so that I can collapse it back on itself and reduce the footprint when not in use. 👍
Also, not sure you need the elbow first. Maybe the flex hose can make that bend?

Or just buy a 90 degree duct elbow with a 6-12" piece of duct running to the side of the planer to attach your hose to. Almost what he did here but instead he opted for a 45 degree elbow... and has the extra run of duct just running straight out the back... still in the way. In fact... if he just flipped the hard duct around where and connected the 45 directly to the planer and then the extension to then attach the hose to it would make more sense.... and you wouldn't need the DIY arm to hold the hose out of the way.... it would just be out of the way.

Mon-o-man that’s a lot of work. When I got my dewalt planer 5 years ago I just used 2 bungee cords. One long enough to go around the 4” collector hose and a longer one to pull the hose to the side via an eye hook on the rafter of my garage. It’s worked perfectly since day one. It costed around $7 and only takes me about 45 seconds to hook it up whenever I want to use the planer.

I like the implementation of parts and end result, but I would rather attach all this support stuff to the dedicated cart/table than to the planer itself. That way you could just simply detach the hose (or in this case coupling) in order to transport or service the planer. All the dust collection stuff stays with the cart/table.

    • @Stillworks

You can't please everyone or accommodate every use case. I suppose that could also apply to my post. However, I see most planers having a dedicated home, or at least platform.
As for the plywood base, yeah, the idea is that it can move with the planer, or doesn't have to. Or for someone that doesn't want to commit to modifying whatever surface it regularly sits on. And the difference is still just disconnecting the hose whether you take the plywood base/dust-hose-arm or not, as opposed to having to dig out wrenches to unbolt it.
I'm not saying your idea is bad. Not even in the slightest. For people with a similar use case to yours, it might make the most sense. I just think there might be a wider market for a similar support that doesn't require tools to detach it from the planer.
