In all areas...more effort and care went into things. They used to put a free towel in laundry soap and I remember a free box of crayons with Dove dish soap.
The 1950's were my time. I graduated High School in Summer of '56. All the brands you show here were a part of my beauty regimen at various times. I loved the Revlon lipsticks! The colours were wonderful and they were long lasting. Max Factor's "Pan Stick" was nice, too. I also used Maybelline Cake Mascara. The make-up back in those days was much less complicated. I really enjoy your channel; thank you! 🤗😘
I was born in the early 40s. I loved the old packaging. It was so lovely. Now everything is plastic and cheep in manufacture. I love what you are doing, showing the old products. They are hard to find now.
Forgive me if this comes out the wrong way, but growing up for you was make up expensive? It seems like the older makeup packaging was much more sturdy and well designed which I would expect to effect price but may be not? Now you can find really cheap and really expensive depending where you go
@@Rehptawr I remember an episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy and Ricky fight about the budget and one of the things he was angry about was nail polish for 15cents. But like you, i don't know If that was expensive! That episode was probanly 1953? I spend 8.00(Canadian) on a nice-ish nail polish and it makes me cringe with guilt!
@Nana Nennu thats really cool! I don't think inflation works backwards though ha ha! But still its amazing to see the buying power people had. If i were to buy nail polish for 1.60 in today's money Id be so pleased!
I think make up from later decades was much more beautiful. Detailed, effort and care had gone into the product. Even down to clothing being made due to when factories were more local and not in sweatshops! You got what you paid for! x
I was born in 1950! During my childhood my Mother wore "Tange" lipstick (vintage available from Old Vermont Store) and Coty Airspun Face powder & tiny bits of cream rouge (don't know brand) She had Coty Emerude in a little Black Bottle that had a "dobber" attached to the inside of the cap & she'd open the bottle & apply at tiny bit to the back of her neck behind her ears! It was a thin cream texture & it lasted all day! In the winter time she had a coat with a huge Silver Fox collar on it & after we got to church & got ready to sit down in our pew, she'd take her coat off & drape it nicely over the back of the pew! Of course I acted like I was cold as soon as the Sermon started so I could cuddle up in her coat and pet the fur! She said I was going to wear out the fur, but it never did! I still remember the smell of her perfume on the fur of that coat! 🥰 Later, in the 60s we used mostly Maybelline, cake Mascara & that awful stick eye shadow in Turquoise!!! We also used the New Clairol "Summer Blonde" on our already Blonde Hair for that "Beach Girl" look! Of course we all layed out by the pool & tanned but used Coppertone Sun Tan Lotion! Hope you enjoyed my Memories! It's fun for me to share with you! Thanks!🤗❤️
Leita Thompson wow my mum did too here in Tasmania Australia and the fake tan was called March tan, she loved ponds cold cream and all kinds of makeup as she was a model awesome 😎they called lush rouge for some reason
I enjoyed listening to your memories, they reminded me of memories from my past also . Remember my mom having "Tange " lipstick , the smell of the Coty Powder, my aunt introduced me to Emeraude perfume we'll not really, I would always be so nosy going through her vanity and come across all these beautiful treasures. My mom had a bottle of Coppertone , loved opening the cap and getting a whiff of that suntan lotion . To this day still love Emeraude perfume , I don't know why but it does remind me of Christmas time . Thanks for sharing those lovely memories, wish we could just open up a drawer and see all the beauty products, perfumes, & powders of the past .
Revlon’s lipstick “cherries in the snow” is still sold in stores and it’s from 1953. In the U.S one is sold every 4 minutes. The matching nail polish is also still in stores. I have both. If you haven’t you should try them! They used to love to match their lipstick and nails.
I wish Max Factor would remake Pancake Makeup. I can't believe how cheap I used to buy it in the 80s and now it goes for a small fortune if you can find one. It was great for my oily skin.
I appreciate your passion! I love the books and periodicals you present with the actual products. I adore drugstore cosmetics. I have a collection of photos I have taken of old drugstore and department store shelves, cabinets - merchandise presentation. Everything was so much more refined, personal and show-cased.
I can watch your videos all day... So well done and well researched. You should write a book of your own or have your own line of cosmetics. I think it would be amazing.
The first makeup I used was Angel Face in “Natural” -in a squeeze tube- perfect natural slightly matte finish- in the 1960’s...the alternative brand was CoverGirl!! I still play with Erace cover up, purchased on Amazon...love your vintage channel! ☺️💕💄
I used to see the teal angel face compact all the time in drugstores back in the 2000s but had no idea it was that old, you learn new things every day lol now I gotta try it
My mum had a cake mascara from Avon . My man was an Avon lady and I used to help her bag the orders, I remember the push up lipsticks and I was allowed the mini lipsticks and perfume 😍😍
Hi Laura I am a new subscriber I wear Estée Lauder a one brand lady , even my perfume youth dew !i have worn this brand for 50 yrs ! Gosh makes me feel quite old ! But not at heart ! I was actually born in 1951 , my sister used max factor pan stick she is 9 yrs older than me,
I'm having flashbacks when my relatives cleaned my late grandmother's wardrobe after her death in '89. She has most of the products that you featured except for the mascara (she cannot tolerate the 'heaviness' of the mascara of that era and never tried it ever since) and the concealer (we lived in a hot climate, the panstik was her foundation and concealer)
Ooh Revlon Moondrops was also a complete skincare collection they had in the 70s and 80s...different ranges for each skin type. Smelled beautiful..always liked them.
Old Vermont Country Store also have Vintage Perfume/Colognes! Like "Evening In Paris" & the less expensive "Blue Waltz"!! Boy do they bring back the Memories! Scents always do!
In the 1970’s and 1980’s I used to love to go to Woolworths, M.E. Moses and Duke and Ayers to buy all kinds of vintage products that no one else was carrying anymore. I used to love buying the hair snoods. They had them in different colors, some made from glitter thread and I even had one with tiny pearls sewn onto it. I wore them all the time and still have 2 left
I Heart Revolution cosmetics available online has an 80's palette right now that seems pretty accurate. Just search for "80's" on their site. It's part of the name of the palette.
I was born in 1957; my mom was not quite 20. I remember seeing her Maybelline cake mascara in the medicine cabinet, in the little red box with tiny brush. She wore red lipsticks, too, but no foundation or blush. I also remember her sometimes wearing "Evening in Paris" perfume; you could get it at the "dime store" (McCrory's) or Woolworth's. You can still buy it, but the price is outrageous. I remember Mom putting on white cotton gloves so she could put on her nylon stockings and attach them to her girdle. In my teens I had oily skin, so foundation was a problem -- until I found Max Factor Pancake. I used a lot of water, so it looked like I had matte skin! I loved that stuff, and used it for years.
Luv your channel it brings the warmth, classic, glamour of the best time period of our society old Hollywood glam. Missing drastically in the stress filled, fast moving time in our society today. Thank you! For being a pioneer in celebrating and trying to bring back a piece of it today. I really hope that as time passes others will discover the vintage gem that is demonstrated in this channel. By the way, luv what your wearing makeup/outfit reminding of the iconic beauty Audrey Hepburn.
I love Stormy Pink!! The U.S. still has it in the main display. I remember moon drops, it used to come in a green container and had a clear center to the lipstick. I remember my mom using cake mascara- it was Maybelline, and the case was exactly like max factor, but it was red.
Love this video Laura and the background music, so relaxing. I also love your makeup. I'm inspired to find those blue grey shadow colors. Cheers Linda ❤
I was a toddler in the 1950s, but I remember pancake foundation, cake mascara, and tangee lipstick. My makeup journey began with Cover Girl's Angel Face line and Avon.
these sort of videos could revive these products. I was born in the early 60's. Women were very feminine as a rule then. I understand the why and how of the change, but this is so refreshing
store your powder puff upside down...fluffy side up...in the case. That way the pressed powder doesn't absorb any skin oil on the puff. You powder will stay fresher longer. One of the first things a makeup artist taught me.
Max Factor isn't sold in the US. I really liked the Pan Stik foundation because it left my skin looking dewy and glowing. I was very sad that they stopped selling in the US.
Love it all, as usual, Laura! I think that Max Factor Erase was the first concealer I ever used. Glad it's still around! I also used Pond's Cold Cream when I was quite young, because my mom used it. I seem to recall a nice peach-scented one!
Oh yes the pink and wbite one was called Ponds Vanishing cream and was way better for oily skin and under makeup....the blue and white one was the Ponds Cold cream and it was for melting off make up but it was sooooo greasy and always made me break out. Loved the Vanishing cream though...left your skin nice and matte !
This brings back so many memories of things my Mom used, and later I used myself. As I watched, I kept saying, "Oh yeah, I remember that name!" (i.e., Moon Drops, Angel Face, Love Pat, Erase, etc.). I also remember my Mom telling me about Tangee when I was a teen. I had their color-changing lipstick, which was similar to the mood lipsticks of the 1970s that you can still get online. Thank you for helping keep these nice memories alive! 😊❤
So Happy I came across your channel on here. From the time I was a little girl up to present date I have always been drawn to the 1950's era and I honestly do not know why but I love the time period and everything about it. I just recently starting collecting vintage items myself I am also obsessed with makeup! Looking forward to more videos! Thank you so much for sharing with us all. :)
Snow Peach has a pretty large following. Very popular in the 50's. Revlon brought it back for a limited time a few years ago. Icy Violet too. Thanks for brightening my day.☺🌷🌻🌷
They are really hard to find. Even the rerelease editions. Keeping my fingers crossed for Revlon to bring them back along with other vintage colors. Hopefully fragrances too.☺🌻
So facinating, I'd ware stormy pink everyday! Such a nice soft, wearable color. I love learning about the history of these things. What blows me away (and I'm surprised you didn't mention it) is how long coty airspun has been around and has been the same, I'd use it if it wasn't for the strong scent.
Laura, I absolutely love your channel! As a 20 year owner of a Midcentury/Vintage store, vintage beauty and hair products are one of my little obsessions.Yesterday, I ordered Max Factor Panstick and Coty Airspun powder that I wore as a teen in the 70’s to try again. Two documentaries you may want to recommend to your viewers is “Beauty in a Jar” and “Two Dollars and a Dream” . Have you seen them? Both are on UA-cam, and both are most excellent! Also, if you have some other beauty documentaries focusing on beauty of days gone by that would be of interest to recommend to us, please do. Thanks for your passion, Luvie!
Great video on these vintage cosmetics items. I remember Angel Face and I still use Panstick in "Cream Ivory" which I cannot find but it doesn't matter because this lasts till eternity.
I love watching your videos and just hearing you talk about all the history of products! You take your time and it’s well appreciated and refreshing (:
I remember Angel Face powder in blue plastic compacts very well, also the Erase cover stick. I recently bought Christian Dior rouge lipstick because I read that it was an iconic red that was supposed to look good on anyone. I love it. It is definitely red, but has a clarity about it that keeps it from looking overdone. I really like it and would buy it again. I don't think I've ever paid that much for a lipstick before, though.
@@streetofdreams4538 I have that one, too. I'm a sucker for any red that claims to suit anyone. I love to wear red, but it has to be right, or you look like you've been playing in your mother's makeup drawer.
I really love your channel. I adore vintage beauty and fashion. People actually had less things back then but they were higher quality and lasted forever. Skin care has really come along but the packaging is crap. Even 32$ dollar lipsticks are in plastic tubes. I think women should start demanding better quality for our dollars.
I love your videos, a refreshing change. I remember when I was young, Yardley cosmetics. They had the most beautiful packaging. I never had any because I was too young for makeup. Have you ever come across any?
Oh yes, Yardley for that 1960s "mod" look! 😊 Used it as a teen. Does anyone remember the Yardley Slicker lipstick that you put on under or over your lip color? I still love Yardley English Lavender soap and it is still available.
I have a beautiful original 1953 Max Factor Creme Puff compact that i found in a charity shop (it’s completely unused, so still has all the product, and still in its original box in beautiful condition) and then took it home to find out my mum uses creme puff powder today! I use it as well now it’s my favourite!!
I’m not too sure whether you have, I don’t believe so, but I think it would be great for you to do a vintage style makeup look. Possibly based off of an iconic celebrity look or simply just your own personal look. I think you’d do it amazingly! ❤️
I used Max Factor Pan cake/stick all during high school. My mom said when she was a teen in the 50’s only movie stars or the rich girls wore it. I loved it.
I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing the books you use for reference, I look forward to finding those. If you haven't checked out the late great makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin's book, Making Faces you should, because he does beautiful recreations of iconic looks and breaks them down step by step with pictures. It is truly a beautiful book. I love your makeup videos! Have you done hair videos? I had a funny memory of my grandmother using kidskin (old timey word for leather, I believe made out of goats) curlers. They are like the fabric covered little square piece of foam that makes it like an elongated ravioli, with wires covered in fabric (only the ones my grandmother used were leather) on either end. Conair makes the fabric ones, but sometimes you can find a lot of unused kidskin rollers online, still in the package or sold as"deadstock ". My grandmother used them on my hair and they made my hair so curly. She used them in the 30's & 40's. They're ugly as sin, being brown and leather, and bendy from the wires within them they look just like.. turds. But they are a uniquely vintage item that our grandmothers used.
I didn't know that you could still get the Ponds face powder, thanks for the info...I bought from Etsy.com a vintage face powder by Ponds called "Dream flower powder" in Camellia color. I think it's from the late 1950s early 1960s...but I won't risk using it since I bought it for its vintage state. It still has a perfume scent to it,doesn't look like the powder has been used.
Ive been around since the 40’s. Ive used all these products. My sister was a show girl with Gypsy Rose Lee and show girls used beading instead of false eyelashes. False eyelashes were used in Hollywood. By 50’s lashes were available.
I can't remember what else my grandmother used but she always had Estee Lauder cream blush (sorry, "rouge") and lipstick in really heavy gold packaging. And she always wore Guerlain Shalimar. It's a scent that fragrance-heads always recommend as a classic to have but to me it has too many memories and smells "old."
Pond’s Angel Face cream foundation in a tube in the shade “Natural” was my very first real makeup in the early 1960”s! Max Factor Panstick and Erace concealer are still very good for covering spots, blemishes ☺️💄 I didn’t wear much lipstick other than tinted gloss, until late 60’s early 70’s- Max factor “Rosewine” would be a dark color for me at that time!
Hello Laura Jane! 🙋 I couldn't wait to tell you. As I'm now collecting Vintage Avon, on EBAY I found a light blue compact, new! It contains a cream perfume in the Moonlight fragrance. As a teen I used to order this fragrance. It's a beautiful compact. There's only 1 left. Maybe you'd like to order it. Only $11. I'm looking for Moonlight body cream. Comes in a cobalt blue plastic top & glass bottom. Thank you for motivating me in starting my Vintage Avon Collection. Oh those old perfume bottles are so pretty! Have a beautiful day; 😘🐈🐾🐾 oops! I meant to say Moonwind not Moonlight. 😣
My mom used the Moon Drops lipsticks, and the face lotion called Moon Drops. She was very into make ups, and yet strangely pretty much forbid me the use of it until I was out of high school. Once I was in uni I could use it. But not before. Consequently, I didn't fit in very well with the girls in high school. But once I got into uni, I could do what I liked.
False lashes began to hit the market in the 20’s but they weren’t popular for a long time since women preferred mascara cakes, it wasn’t until the 40’s - 60’s that movie stars made them popular.
I love vintage cosmetic packaging. It seems like more time and effort was taken to make it more pretty.
In all areas...more effort and care went into things. They used to put a free towel in laundry soap and I remember a free box of crayons with Dove dish soap.

Love it all, as usual, Laura! I think that Max Factor Erase was the first concealer I ever used. Glad it's still around! I also used Pond's Cold Cream when I was quite young, because my mom used it. I seem to recall a nice peach-scented one!
Oh neat I love that was the first concealer
Oh yes the pink and wbite one was called Ponds Vanishing cream and was way better for oily skin and under makeup....the blue and white one was the Ponds Cold cream and it was for melting off make up but it was sooooo greasy and always made me break out. Loved the Vanishing cream though...left your skin nice and matte !
I’m 99.9% sure Revlon discontinued the Moon Drops brand :( Persian Melon is such a gorgeous shade, and looks great on you!
Thanks so much, I found it on amazon it’s linked below
All the moon drops on Amazon is old stock. It isn't made anymore.
@@MilwaukeeWoman if it's no longer made, how does Amazon carry it? Are they selling it out just to get rid of the left over stock?
@@cherieamor6377 Not amazon themselves, anybody can sell through them, somebody probably bought some old stock at an auction and it selling it off.
Mom Drops east simply an extra moisturizing formula of the Revlon standard lipstick. I didn't think Moon Drops lasted as long.
First makeup i used was constance carroll face powder and lipstick
Hi Laura! Wonderful video. I love Persian Melon. I wish Revlon would bring Snow Peach back permanently too. ☺🌻🌈
Thanks Jennifer, I want to try snow peach
Snow Peach has a pretty large following. Very popular in the 50's. Revlon brought it back for a limited time a few years ago. Icy Violet too. Thanks for brightening my day.☺🌷🌻🌷
Ah I need them going to look look online
They are really hard to find. Even the rerelease editions. Keeping my fingers crossed for Revlon to bring them back along with other vintage colors. Hopefully fragrances too.☺🌻
Revlon still makes Persian Melon, but it's the regular cream formula.
Thanks for your wonderful video!!!
The beautiful coral one from revlon ...our mom where that ...in the 50 s and 60 s.....
Your make up is stunning. I adore all your videos.
Great video on these vintage cosmetics items. I remember Angel Face and I still use Panstick in "Cream Ivory" which I cannot find but it doesn't matter because this lasts till eternity.
I had a Clinique Basic eye Emphasizer. It was an eye liner and shadow with a tiny hair brush and spongue. Can't get it now . Saved space in my bag .
I love this videos, I re watch every some time. ❤
I wish they still had the blue angel face. I know that red is incredible! I love it such a classic
I hear Revlon's Love is On red lipstick is supposed to be a universally flattering red--definitely cheaper!
👏👏👏👍
Such a cool concept 4 a video! I didn't know max factor was still making the pan stick foundation. I remember my mom wearing that in the 80s!
I love the Max Factor pan stick foundation. I used to wear it lightly under my eyes to school.
Now when I smell it, I go back in time to 1973. ☺💕⚘
So happy to find you. I loved this video. Angel Face powder smells so good. I think they had a foundation also.
I’ve gone back and forth on Stormy Pink because I’m super fair and worried it’ll be too bright on me.
I am very fair too! It’s not that bright such a beautiful pink
Thanks ladies that was my fear as well, maybe I'll go for it
You will love it
I’ve got it and it’s really not very bright at all- it is more of a softer pink and perfect for those with fair complexions. You will love it.
This is a wonderful and interesting video!
This vid is so aesthetically pleasing. I love that era! I remember that mascara. That cake “delivery system”.. seems so hard to work with now.
oh my goodness girl! i wish i found you sooner. i could watch you all day! this channel was made for vintage loving girls like me 🥰
I agree!🤗
Your channel is so relaxing. Thank you so much.
@@gloriaj.pinsker9577 I sure do! I wish they would bring all those back.
@@lotus57100 me too! I've a pot of gloss in red and yardley eyeshadow
Ok sure! That’s a great idea
I used Max Factor Pan cake/stick all during high school. My mom said when she was a teen in the 50’s only movie stars or the rich girls wore it. I loved it.
Beautiful video ! I love that cat pillow 🐈😘
Thanks so much! I’m going to check out that book you mentioned! Also those hair curlers sound so interesting
@Wendy Ellen Warren My Mother used to set my hair with kidskin curlers in the 1940's. Remember them well! 🥰
Nice story, thanks for sharing that.🤗 I enjoy hearing about vintage products/items. Almost everything made today is disposable..😕
Thank you 🌹
Hi Laura Jane! Well researched - and with such love. 💄
My grandmother wore Cutex brand nail polish "Windsor Rose" which is very similar in shade to "Cherries in the Snow"
Oh interesting! I know it’s wild you can still buy angel face
🥰🥰...love The cat pillow 🥰💗💗😍
I'm a new subscriber. I'm so happy I came across your channel. I love vintage items so I appreciate your content. :)
Ive been around since the 40’s. Ive used all these products. My sister was a show girl with Gypsy Rose Lee and show girls used beading instead of false eyelashes. False eyelashes were used in Hollywood. By 50’s lashes were available.
The blue pond's compact is beautiful!! I love the research you do. I dread to think how much money you spend getting good pic these products!! Xx
My mother loved Shalimar as well. Also White Shoulders. I just love the cosmetics and fragrances of that era. Everything was so feminine.
Love it!
I would love to know your opinion on the Marvelous Mrs Maisel makeup- and the lipsticks revlon created for their Maisel trio.
I use coty airspun powder, it’s been around since 1935
I had many tubes of Erase and Compacts of Angel Face.
Amazing channel! Greetings from Italy
I love you videos your voice is really soothing.
What a great video. Love it!
Never been so sure to click "subscribe" 🧡 Wonderful channel. Bisou from France x
My mom used Max factor cake mascara in a tortise shell case.
False lashes began to hit the market in the 20’s but they weren’t popular for a long time since women preferred mascara cakes, it wasn’t until the 40’s - 60’s that movie stars made them popular.
Love !
Thanks so much
