It’s so unfortunate that people lose sight of this in their own pain or need to get even or make the other hurt….. as soon as the break up happens - relationship is secondary to the well being of the kids. How can a woman take a man to the cleaners and then expect him to be a good father? How can a man viciously attack the mother of his children and then expect her to be a good mother? So twisted.

I married a farm boy who went to college and became a successful man on his own hard work (paid for his own college tuition). My hubby can change out the kitchen sink, grow a healthy food garden and take me on camping adventures into the PNW mountains and he can go to a business gala properly dressed and speak elegantly from his heart. My husband and I both grew up in lower economic farming families. We never wanted for food or a simple, loving, and clean house. But we knew money was not abundant. We kept these values as we became successful adults. Our children and grandchildren have never been spoiled. If you want a dollar you’ve got to earn it. Our bit of wealth was built as a family and we do not take it for granted. Also, we choose to give to Christian community charities. Our children will not be left any money. They know this and agree with it. They have done well on their own knowing this. The children have no time for being stupid and doing substances or driving reckless. We do spend a lot of time together outdoors. Nothing better than being in the woods around a campfire with a good book and a snuggle. 🥰

@sharonsmith583 Mrs Moxley was a fine lady. Often on TV during the murder trial of her daughter by the Skakel boy. She waited many years for justice there. They tried to blame it on 2 black boys who had been invited, good families there, too. Anything to avoid the truth. As for this latest creep, besides the suicide, I have a vague memory of another wife who had been a model and became completely anorexic with nerves and unhappiness and possibly died. I may be confusing her with RFK'S son, Joe. Every single one vile to women who loved them. It could have been in the 70s and my memory confused but I distinctly recall anorexia and was she French? She could get credit in her own name up until that time. We wanted her and us to be ok if something should take our Dad away. In the news there was a professional baseball player that left his wife and kids and she had to exist on the charity of others until the divorce court ordered her husband to pay because she had nothing in her own name! It was real! You young gals have no idea!

Young women today have no clue. When I was in the 4th grade my teacher said she didn't think women should be paid the same as women because they weren't the head of the family. In the 6th grade I had a male teacher who walked back and forth in front of the class saying women were not equal to men and why. This was the late 60's. He told my mother during parent/teacher conference that he was worried I'd never get married because I was too competitive with boys. My mother said, "and why does she need to worry about that now? She's 11." Not completely enlightened but close. My mother was the only mom in my class who worked. I asked her why she worked and she told me because I don't want to ask your dad for 50 cents to buy a tube of lipstick. It was then a light bulb went on and I understood money was power and independence.

A big bonjour from France. I have a wee Ethel Kennedy story. I'm originally from Arlington, VA, and the RFK family lived in McLean, right nearby. Anyway, my best friend in high school's mother worked for Ethel for years and she said all the kids, without exception, were spoilt monsters who did absolutely anything they wanted, and that Ethel was just totally checked out. She told us a bunch of things I don't remember anymore, except for one "little" thing. The kids would go into the refrigerator, take out a jar of mayonnaise and just stick their hands in it to get it out and would lick it off and start over again. I can't believe I don't remember anything else!!!

Then, after Bobby was assassinated, Ethel was not able to deal with her own anger and grief nevermind help her children deal with their anger and grief. There was no one to set healthy boundaries for the children or to help them through what we know of today as intensive family counseling.

Thank you Cheere Denise this has been interesting roller coaster of a listen, l love your commentary and honest analysis of the characters within the book. Bobby Jnr appears to have been little different from the rest of his family in his disregard for the feelings of his wife or wives. He seemed to have wanted to humiliate Mary after their divorce. A very sad end to a troubled life and what a final humiliation at her funeral and beyond!
I am looking forward to the Tom Bower book about the Beckhams.

The excellent comments under this video are already covering most of my thoughts about it. If anybody wants a deeper dive on RFK Jr., the podcast called “behind the bastards “did a really good deep dive on him. Unfortunately, it came out just before the news about the bear cub, the whale head, Olivia Nuzzi, and allegations of other extramarital dalliances that happened in the last year. There is no end to the drama and trauma! I don’t believe there has been any kind of enlightenment or reformation in this guy. He is comes across as a full on narcissist. There is no healing from that.

Absolutely brilliant series! Thank you for bringing the stories of these women to us, Cheere. The overarching theme in this book that I found the MOST despicable, the MOST vile and the MOST egregious was the vicious smear campaigns the Kennedy PR machine launched after these women died! Calling them $luts, alcoholics, drug @ddicts and crazy social climbers who simply wanted to bag a Kennedy, with nigh a thought for the families of these women who had to watch their loved ones be slandered, defamed and dishonoured by the very perpetrators of their downfall was the most difficult to listen to. The anecdote about RFK Jr not throwing his own rubbish in the bin (towards the end of the episode) shines an even brighter light on the loathsome Kennedy arrogance...they seemed more willing to throw people who no longer served a purpose for them, into the trash than the wrapper from a cheeseburger.

Regardless of what he has done to redeem himself since then, it doesn’t sound like he has atoned for his role in the failure of both of his first 2 marriages. I also think it was unnecessary and uncalled-for for him to speak I’ll of Mary after her death.
Perhaps she truly did have mental health disorders. But it was classless for him to speak so of her during the funeral. Also, secretly moving her grave afterwards-classless.

This book really opened my eyes to the Kennedy clan, and I am shocked at how many dirty, horrific deeds so many members of the family got away with. Also, I am shocked at the horrible treatment the families of the Kennedy women were subjected to by the Kennedy’s themselves. The fact that the Kennedy men got away with everything from murder (allegedly) to the disturbance of graves (I was under the impression that was a crime as well) and they show no remorse or regret. I don’t understand why so many people still put the Kennedy’s on a pedestal. It appears that the Kennedy men are narcissists at the least, and psychopaths at the worse, and I hope that changes with each new generation. The Kennedy’s don’t deserve to be considered American royalty, and I hope more people start to realize that and begin to stop the hero worship the Kennedy’s receive.

Cheere, not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but, if you have HBO there is a documentary called “Ethel” done by her daughter Rory and it is SO fascinating. They do everything they can to paint her as a modern day saint and yet, and YET…the weirdness of that family still manages to leak around the edges. It’s like there is no WAY for anyone, anywhere, to paint that family in a normal light. Not even they can do it for themselves.

It’s true! I’ve had it in my pc for near 10 years and I won’t delete it, since it’s not available in HBO Portugal. If’s fascinating.

@@Nicstewert Same here! You definitely should read Jerry Oppenheimer’s book. The filthy mess the house was, the way the help was treated…
And the horses story in the documentary has another totally different side.

Ethel had one kid after another and it sounds like that might have continued if not for the tragedy of losing the husband and father of that family.
Children can’t raise themselves and it sounds likely the kids behaved like they were feral.
I always thought that David that overdosed was such a lost soul in that family.
Mary sounded like a real piece of work herself.
    Her end was self violent.
Robert was like poison to her , actually both of their instability.

My mother had BPD, and I can testify to what a nightmare it is to grow up with a mother like that. If he really was rescuing his kids from her rages when he took them away, then I’d say he is a very brave man.
