    🚩 Considered one of the most important defeats in Roman history, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest brought the triumphant period of expansion under Augustus to an abrupt end. It discouraged the Romans from pursuing the full conquest of Germania, instead switching to tribute collection, thus can be considered one of the most important events in European history.

      I mean not really. If you compare it to Cannae and other major losses where they lost over 70,000+ soldiers. 15,000 is a pretty small defeat in the grand scheme of things if we compare it to other losses in their history

    • @DisFantasy
      @DisFantasy День тому +1

      @@jamesschaller753 As I understand it, Rome's military was more professional at this time. Meaning man for man, the military was stronger, but also more expensive. Rome didn't have an expansive empire back during Cannae that required a large military presence throughout the region. Those 80,000 were men taken off the streets and trained and equipped in short order, and while they would be sorely missed, it would not be for their military prowess.
      Losing a large force abroad in the field would have after shocks throughout the empire. It took years to prepare and position those legions. Losing them reset the board in Germany.

    I think this is not just about Arminius' betrayal and Varus' gullibility, but also the problem to hold a difficult territory with 3 Legions that was gained by 11 Legions. So Tiberius contributed to the defeat by withdrawing 8 of the legions with him....

      It's highly similar to when President George Washington's military leadership & generals were utterly reckless & incompetent during the Wabash campaign in the 1790s. They lost a lot of men and literality regiments during the campaign akin to Varus's march.

      In hindsight Ilyria was way more important than germania. Mind you that one revolt there almost toppled the whole of the roman empire, while in germania the germans had always a pretty hard time to cross the fortified rhine, but yes it was still dumb to let such a ferocious land be guarded by 3 legions

    I know hindsight is everything, was it not obvious after the 1st day attack that there was only two sensible options: Go back as they came, or (since the scouts didn't return) build one of those impenitrable Roman fortification and waitout the Germans. Afterall they still had their supplies, theyve got the numbers and the had injured to deal with, some of whom would have recovered and rejoin the ranks, and also for the weather to improve.
    Why press on into the unknown when you suspected that you may have been betrayed by the person who recommended the same route?

    Man, I had no idea that Varus committed suicide at the worst possible moment when his men needed him. Must be such a bad sign for the rank and file and self-fulfilling prophecy of total destruction when the command commits suicide rather than facing the risks.

    it is certainly a mind breaking task to even consider what a single legionary would have been thinking and seeing in these fatal hours, darkness, death, the rain beating down relentlessly, endless screams and terror unlike anything any Roman would have ever felt before or since. it must have seemed like the very forest was alive and killing all around you like the demons and monsters of the void. i feel nothing but pity for those poor legion members every last man. and nothing but respect for the ruthlessness of the germanium, that would never be shaken from their culture until the early years of Imperial Germany.

    I am from near that region where the battle took place and Arminius was only called Hermann beginning in the 16th Century AD. Probably it was Martin Luther (the person who started the separation of the catholic church) who first called Arminius Hermann.
