A little thing about starting small on the caliber. Don't start small on the caliber as far as what you purchase. Start small on rental guns to get a feel. You don't want to spend a couple hundred on a .25 then spend maybe another $400-$500 on a second purchase being a 9mm. Save money and buy one handgun to start with. Use rentals as a place to learn. Don't buy a .22 or .25- just rent them and try them out.

I have a female friend who is 72. she took her conceal carry course and of course they tried to sell her Glock. first thing I asked her was can she pull the slide back and lock it safely, she could not, so we went to a gun show and spent over four hours looking at guns. she settled on a Springfield 9mm. it is easy for her to load and shoot. also my wife had never fired a pistol and was only comfortable with a Taurus 25 so that was her starter pistol. now she carries a Ruger LC9. another thing is women should talk with someone with real firearm experience beside a salesman at the gun shop. another woman I know was talked into purchasing a Ruger LC 38 with a laser. she does not plan to carry the gun outside her home and because the gun is light weight it is very brutal for her to shoot, she is small and in her 60's and had only fired a 22 rifle before. I would have recommended a 22 magnum revolver for her. maybe a 32 magnum and let her fire someone elses guns if possible to get an idea what worksfor her. she did not want a pistol and liked revolvers for being simple and does not plan to shoot a lot, just enough to be comfortable with her gun. its ok, I know a lot of people will say I'm stupid but I don't care

My advice would be to RENT several different guns at a range and pick the one that FEELS the best for you. Don't get a 22 or 25. Get at least a 38 or 380 for self defense

A few weekends ago, a friend brought his wife along shooting with us for the first time. He had rented a Glock 17 and she did "well" with it, but it was obviously freaking her out a little bit. At my suggestion, he exchanged the rental for an M&P22 and she enjoyed it MUCH more.
Even I wish my first gun hadn't been a .45 ACP 1911. Getting the fundamentals down would've been easier (and cheaper) on a .22 or even 9mm. Erika's advice applies to every new shooter. :)

I agree with you. Women should start off with a smaller caliber, but not necessarily an extremely compact gun. Controllability is everything. A weapon that is easy to control is one that you can be accurate with and feel more confident carrying. Great vid. I pray that you and Cory have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Best.

Very true words. I own many firearms and I know what I like to shoot. Shooters preference varies depending on the shooter. I've gone into FFL's and said that I am looking for a good, lightweight carry gun in .357 and the guy shows me the newest gun like a Ruger LCR (just an example). I don't like the feel of their revolvers and prefer Charter Arms, but if you go up to the sales guy and ask him to show you what HE thinks is a good carry gun, expect him to show you something YOU might not like.

I could not agree more with everything you've said in this video. I set my wife loose her first time with a .40 subcompact and a tiny .380 and scared the hell out of her. It was a year before she'd touch another gun.

I think it would have been worth mentioning that a comfortable grip is extremely important. I've seen many females say a Glock grip is too wide, whereas something like my Ruger SR9c, or even a 1911, is slim enough for a good grip. Then there is always the amazing M&P (one of my personal favorites) with the interchangeable grip swells to fit any shooter. But besides that, great job in giving advice to fellow lady shooters. Thanks for the video!

Great video Erika. I work at a gun shop and regularly help female customers who are unsure of what gun is the right one for them. My first question to them is what do they plan on using it for? Second question is what is their experience level? That usually gives me a good baseline to start off with and go through some options with them. Ive found over the years that its the Husband/BF that is the source of most misinformation. It helps when they just take a step back and listen, lol.

Okay, as an instructor and a gunsmith I do have to say I agree with about 90% of your arguments and 100% of your conclusions. BUT, huge BUT, I have to take issue with the "gun shop expert" tag. As someone who runs a shop that sells guns, works on them as a smith and armorer, and instructs men and women on the proper use and implementation, I am as are you and the rest of the people at your "school house", subject matter experts.
The biggest problem I have ever seen when it comes to women purchasing their first firearm is NOT listening to the gun shop expert and listening to (usually) their husband or worse; their father. The first question I have asked every female customer "what is the purpose of this purchase? Self defense, home defense, etc. Then I ask their experience. Now, I will admit I push Glock, but that's for their quality, not because the 25 dollar profit my shop makes from selling that gun vs the 35 I would make selling the Sig or 24.50 for the M&P. The shop expert is usually the best source for a reason. Sure, there is always a Carl, but you can figure that out within 10 minutes.
Other then that, I am happy to see a female instructor making video's with advise. I have turned a few of my female clients to yours and a couple of other video sites. Continue the great work, thanks.

I prefer Gen 4s but I have Gen 3s as well. There really isnt much of a difference so it comes own to the end user. For your mother I would recommend a .22 caliber handgun, the slides are typically MUCH lighter on those guns and easier to rack. I like the Walther P22 and the Sig Mosquito myself.

Being a Clerk is half of my job (Other half being a Gunsmith), I do not get commission, and I will not sell a firearm that I do not believe is reliable. If someone is dead set on a firearm that I know malfunctions, I hand them off to another Clerk. When females come in with their significant other, and the male wants to get them a .22, I always recommend the Glock 17,19, of the Springfield XD-9 Subcompact, depending on if its for CCDW or home defense. I will not sell a gun I don't trust.

started my children and wife off on 22 rifles and 1911 pistols, moved them up to 380 in a berretta, after that to 357 in my revolvers, colt, ruger, smith, all 3 inch to 4 inch. next came the 9mm in the springfield xd, then the 45 in springfield xd, ruger sr, kimber 3 and 4 inch, and sig 1911, but all around favorite for all the ladies is the colt 45 7.5 inch army and the ruger old army 45 black powder, as long as I do all the loading and cleaning. ps I always have to clean all guns, they also enjoy henry 22 pump, 22mag lever and ruger 10/22, as well as my favoritr rifle the M1A and the reminginton 30-06. then there are the 20 and 12 gauge pump shotguns lord life is good in this shooting family, also have for my own 3 inch ruger whiley clap, 2 inch sw 36, sw 28 4 inch, colt trooper 4 inch, soon to be added sw 586 and 27 in 4 inch, family will always be well armed, do I rely on semi autos hell no they fail, give me revolvers any day with 357mag round it will get it done, served 3 years in nam always carried an M1A and colt 1911, backup was a smith 28 in 357 and that is what I depended on to save my life at close range 50 yards and closer, 45 acp was good for rapid knock down and worked well but 357 penetrated the flack vest and insured a kill which ment I was safe. tell that to your daughters. and the look for other threats then holster only works on the range, besides looking ignorant it lets everyone know what you are doing even the bad guys know that. never let the threat know what you are doing, you will live longer, and you do want to raise your baby do you not.

What I mean by handing them off, that is if I cannot convince them to go with a reliable firearm if they are buying their first firearm/handgun. Some people out there only want a "Pretty gun" or a gun their favorite fictional character uses and nothing you tell them can change their mind. It really is hard to deal with some people, I am always courteous, and I would rather educate a person then sell them a firearm on the spot. Hell, sometimes I send them to other shops for better prices. :O

best advise you gave was to let women pick out there own guns... they must be easy to operate and load. the more a gun has weight the less recoil and muzzle flip...effects it. Common affordable ammo and not super powerful guns make for a better first gun experience. In my opinion guns not overly sprung are far easier to operate and load. Short compact guns maybe later after you get experience. A mid size / to full size service pistol makes an excellent choice to begin with. A gun with a bit lighter recoil spring and slightly heavier slide weight is a good way to begin choosing that first gun. Sig 239 229 226 HK usp 9 and usp .40 or compact versions.... of those. 1911's in 9mm are good... Glock 19 17 in 9mm are great choices... revolvers can be 357 mag or 38 special but you want to shoot 38 special in either for practice... Taurus smith& Wesson good choices.. and the fuller sized kahr 9mm autos in the cw9 family are good starts because of there good basic trigger pull. Try them in your hand and don't be in a hurry. Shoot everything you can shoot and see what you like along the way.
