It's like an absurdly layered inside joke that Milano somehow injected into the Yu-Gi-Oh community.

Can someone explain to me why edison is so popular? i was told it's card pool doesn't expand so aren't people just playing the same decks over and over? why aren't new cards targeting these archetypes, such as the newer blackwing support, or the new Genex support get added to the playability pool to spice things up? (I would understand not adding link monsters or xyz, but anything synchro or lower would be fair game?"

It's not exactly about expanding the cardpool, but more about what People can find with a limited one. People Often thrive on theory crafting Decks using cards that no one thought of because of either the timetable or because it's underexplored.

Edison is a format that historically was under explored. The decks that were believed to be the best when it was the current format were actually not the strongest available. Edison also hits the sweet spot of what makes Yugioh fun, with both interactive gameplay and powerful combos. It’s a format that rewards skillful play, but isn’t extremely complex.

I mean, many boardgames have the same tools each time, but good board games don't depreciate in value on replay because of their depth. Edison is much the same.

I think it appeals to nostalgia. It has enough elements of modern Yugioh like big combos and cohesive decks, while also having a somewhat slower pace akin to older-school Yugioh. A lot of people who were actively playing back then get to relive those days, and new players getting into the game don't feel so overwhelmed by the insane decks of modern Yugioh so it's a good stepping stone.

the lack of heavy storm is noticeable. the top decks setting 5 backrow is a bit exhausting compared to edison risk/reward factor. although it does have MST at 3

Starlight Road stardust doesn't come back after an effect activation because it's not Synchro Summoned properly. Negating and not negating would just end up the same way: Stardust in the graveyard.
