The original Devil May Cry was created because they had all these ideas when they were creating RE4, which had deviated too far away from what a Resident Evil game was supposed to be, so instead of scrapping those ideas, they took them, and turned it into Devil May Cry, which released for the PS2 in 2001.

That's not what I heard. The version I know is "hey guys, we're rookie game-developers, just trying stuff out, and we wanted to try making our own physics engine. So here's a demo. We put a goat in it. It's a bit shitty, but please try it and tell us what you think" And then, the internet said "MOAR!!!!" and the game-devs said "Okay then."
I used to study in the same city as the devs are in, and they gave a really good lecture about it! It was basically a 2-week game jam where they were trying out a new game engine, and they encouraged everyone who had an idea to just go for it :) They then put up a mock-trailer in the uni fb group, and it sort of went viral from there, so they decided to make an actual release.

You know how in Space Invaders, the enemies move faster and faster as you kill them? That was caused by a processing error. That one bug created the very concept of difficulty curves.
@@Redhotsmasher Yeah, the CPU wasn't fast enough to process at a normal pace with everything on screen. The fewer enemies on screen, the less it had to process, and the faster the game got.
It’s a feature that’s still used in plenty of shmups, and they’ll even program it in on purpose. The more bullets on screen, the more slowdown, making it possible to dodge really dense patterns (just look at some CAVE games for an example)

I am missing the first Civilization game's Ghandi turning into a nuke loving maniac as a result of a glitch. That one has been kept in one form or another for every subsequent game so far.
@@Ryvaken it wasn’t a bug though, in Civ 1 nukes are tied to science, and India’s wouldn’t have standing armies due to pacifism, making Nukes there only form of attack or defense.

Ghandi had a 0 aggression score, and one of the upgrades you could get reduced opponents aggression via diplomacy or something, rolling their aggression to -1, which flipped it back to max 255. So ghandi would instead use nukes as soon as humanly possible no matter what.
I feel like the lag that caused Space Invaders to have a scaling difficulty needs to be mentioned here. It was always intended to run at one speed but lag caused it to slow down early on until you clear enough enemies. Now it's not only a staple for Space Invaders but for basically every other game.
Yes that game accidentally invented the concept of a difficulty curve. While that idea seems obvious now, our creations are based on real life, and real life never quite works out with a easy mode to get you up to speed so that you can slowly get better at your own pace. So if that bug didn't happen, its possible that the modern gaming landscape would have been entirely different.
For added context to the FF6 one, Phantom Train didn't have the Heavy property because he was undead, and undead bosses in Final Fantasy games are typically supposed to be insta-killed by spells or items that revive your party members. If he was Heavy, he would've been immune to Life/Phoenix Down, so... =)

The Meat Vendor in Shattrath City in WoW: The Burning Crusade, was accidentally placed next to a fruit cart that was built into the world. Rather than move him they just made a storyline about him getting into a blood feud with the very perplexed fruit vendor who owned the cart.
Did you know the orc you are talking about was a rare mob spawn in Warlords of Draenor's Talador zone? killing him let you earned a toy that when targeted throws an Apple at it!
He wasn't an error though. The stat displayed as Ermac in MK1 was for error macros, which according to Ed Boon is simply a macro created to catch coding errors/traps. The listing was a rumour because ordinary people didn't understand it, not because it was an error.
I didn't know you could suplex yourself. Guess that's what sets Sabin apart from us regular, non-self suplexing humans. I mean, when he's not confused, Sabin can physically pick a giant train, and suplex it, like he's got superhuman strength or something. Which is awesome.
Imagine: Elder Scrolls 6 fast travel between cities: You pay, then the caravaneer calls for a giant that hits you... and then you fly to the destination... stand up there... TADAAAA!

Suplexing a ghost train is always going to be a favorite. I would like to point out that Phantom Train can be easily beaten by using a fenix down on him.
The Behemoth SR's second form is undead, making it also beatable via phoenix down. Of course, the classic vanish-doom/vanish-petrify combo's easily accessible by then, so... Not sure how the Phantom Train was actually *vulnerable* to Suplex, though. It was just a good all-around move at that point in the game for causing damage, lol
It'd be like asking me about cricket. Baseball, hockey, football (even Canadian rules), fütball, basketball, tennis, golf, curling... But even I have blindspots.
Apparently monster in-fighting in Doom was actually a bug during development. It seemed interesting so they just left it in the game. It's became a fairly significant part of map design, and Doom 2 even had a cyberdemon and a spider mastermind in the same room because people always debated which one would win. The firewall gun in Rise of the Triad was also said to be a bug during development but they decided to go with it anyway.
Makes me think of Borderlands 2. A bug caused one of Tiny Tinas eyes to randomly twitch and upon discovering the bug, the devs at gearbox decided that it was a really good fit for the erratic and somewhat mad little girl, so they left it in. In Borderlands 3 the now teenaged Tina also has a mad eye.
Hey, whete’s Abigail from Stardew Valley? In the old release, she was accidentally coded to react to all presents as though they were her favorite food (resulting in her declaring that she thought things like rocks were delicious snacks) and in later patches, instead of fixing it, they added dialogue where Abigail confirmed that yes, she WAS eating all those presents, because the original implications were just too funny to pass up.

Elder Scrolls Online? Animation "cancelling" was a block exploit that allowed you to use abilites faster while flailing around like a maniac, they ended up claiming "its a feature" after months of trying to fix it and failing
What about the Skyrim Giant glitch where if your hit with a giants club, you get launched into the stratosphere. After it was patched the players begged for it to return, so they put it back in and still include it in next gen versions
Y'know, you can say its a glorified bug, I'm personally glad the hit always kills you and you dont have to sit through several minutes of flailing in the wind like a plastic bag only to splat.

My first time with that glitch was so memorable. I'd just beaten that first worthless dragon, and I felt like I was the most powerful thing in the worst. Like I was playing my Morrowind character with his +2 million hp per second for 79 years potions. So I thought "I can take this pussy giant!" I hit him, and then I hit escape velocity.
to be fair, nearly all of the weird things in a Bugthesda game could probably be on this list, such as climbing a nearly vertical cliff easily via horse, because that horse doesn't give a crap about gravity or your fancy world physics, its got places to go!

Wticher 3 - The whole glitchy Roach getting stuck on stuff once you've whistled him was joked about in Blood & Wine where you essentially do some drugs and Geralt believes he can talk to Roach.
That Warframe isn't on here is kind of a shame, the whole thing of Coptering with the Dual Zoren being turned into Bullet Jumps for everyone was pretty neat and honestly helped to shape the games movement systems and styles as a whole into what it is today.
Oh my god, I didn't know that Bullet Jumping started life as a bug. Considering it is pretty much the only way people move around missions now, yeah, Warframe absolutely needs to be on the commenter edition!

You left out Dragon Age: Inquisition! In the game, there's a character named Krem who has a habit of standing or sitting on the back of his chair when you enter the tavern. He usually sits down as soon as you get closer. When Bioware created the Tresspasser DLC, they worked the glitch into an affectionate moment between himself and the tavern bard, admitting he used to stand on the chair to get a better view lol.
Yeah, they showed 2 heads, but they SAID you could uppercut THREE heads off, if you did the command in RAPID SUCCESSION, and plus, Johnny DID uppercut 3 heads off in his secret "Star Power" Brutality in MK11.

There was a bug in Quake where players appeared to be on the wrong team. This became the Spy in Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2. Rocket jumping was also a bug in Quake that became a huge part of the Soldier playstyle, to the point that Soldier was shown rocket jumping in some TF2 trailers.

Lee Sin from LoL's W ability (the one where he dashes and shields a target) was originally intended to only target allies. Players who tested Lee, had so much fun hopping to minions and more importantly wards, that it became a huge part of the champions' identity and gameplay loop.

I figured when she jumped, grabbed a ledge, and slammed her body into the wall, they were actually acting as pitons to stop her from slipping. And yeah, the character modeller claimed to have "accidentally' scaled them up more than intended but decided he liked them that way.
Random obscure trivia about SF2: You could "unlock" the handcuffs by doing the same move again, even if time ran out on the match. You could also reset the game by using strong attacks instead of medium ones (like you would for the handcuffs bug).
There's also the "hang time" glitch from Devil May Cry where using the guns in mid air caused a drop in Dante's framerate or something,and he would pause briefly in his falling animation. The developers liked it so much it became a feature of the series.
Honestly, I've been having a really bad time with EA and their broken software recently. Saw that the whole Mass Effect trilogy is finally on Steam and decided to get it (I'm still on ME2). Turns out ME3 is a complete slideshow thanks to Origin overlay. Then decided to install Origin. Took me a whole day of troubleshooting in safe mode to get it past the installation prompt. Then when I finally installed ME3, it was giving me various DirectX and Visual C errors. One of my friends gave me a "renegade version" of ME3. Lo and behold, it works flawlessly. I really hate when legit buyers are being hampered by launchers and DRM when pirated copies work so easily. Defeats the whole point.

Here's another bug that has been embraced by the developer: In the indie survival-crafting game Valheim, if you parry an enemy archer's arrow it stuns them in the same way as parrying a melee attack. It was originally a bug but the community and developers liked it and it will remain as a mechanic through its release (currently in early access).
Starseige Tribes initially had you using vehicles or hoofing it across massive landscapes. It was noticed that rapidly pressing the jump button would remove the friction with the ground. People started using this to gain HUGE speed "skiing" downhill, and, combined with the jetpack, players were flying all over with big air and speed. The "skiing" mechanic was built in to every game after that.
Something similar to the homing briefcase situation was the famous Skyrim Space Program where a giant could launch your character and others into the sky. Apparently, this funny bug was so beloved by the community that when Bethesda patched it out, they told them to put it back.
I don't know if the pistol counts from Halo CE. A last-minute coding change threw the damage all out of whack and we got the legendary destroyer of everything we know today.
Terraria had a glitch called the Hoik where triangular sloped blocks can be made to propel the player at high speeds along its path. This creates a new form of rail transportation that allows travel to the ends of the world faster than most other methods. Combining Hoiks and wire mechanisms, allows complex computations such as calculating addition in binary and converting it to a decimal display. Relogic kept this glitch in the game as a feature because of how much potential it opened up.
What about Starseige:Tribes? There was a bug where ground resistance wouldn't register if the player was jumping, which in combination with that fact that you had a jetpack, meant that by jumping down hills and jetting up, you could build up an insane amount of speed. This became known as “skiing” and quickly turned the game from the intended slow vehicle based tactical squad shooter into a frantic super high paced gravity ballet, and it became the main mechanic of the franchise.
Another great example was skiing in Starsiege: Tribes. It was originally a physics glitch, but it was so popular that it became a core feature in all future Tribes games.
What about the giants in Skyrim sending you to space? A feature that was removed and then added back in, and it is also featured in ESO Greymoor in a quest:)))

Kerbal Space Program has the Kraken. Originally a glitch in the physics engine that would rip apart vessels under certain circumstances, the Kraken became a legend. The dev team embraced it, adding references to it in description text and even putting a kraken statue as an easter egg on one moon. It also has the Mohole, a perfectly conical hole at the north pole of the planet Moho, which began as a glitch in the terrain map, but was then declared a feature.
When the phantom train was a brought over as a boss in final fantasy XIV, I fought it for the first time as a monk. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t suplex it like Sabin did in ff6
Kinda disappointing that they renamed it to "Diabolic Whistle" in the FFXIV version of the fight. Also think they should've had a certain FFXIV character that's famous for his suplexes come in at the end. Seems like a missed opportunity.

There's a bug in the first Borderlands game when you play as Mordecai and activate Bloodwing without targeting an enemy. Bloodwing would just fly around until the timer ran out or until the player targeted an opponent. In Borderlands 2 they gave this bug an endearing explanation and it all made sense.
this reminds me of an annoying quirk in Elite Dangerous: when using Collector drones to collect rock fragments when doing asteroid mining, if you target a fragment when launching a drone, it will collect ONLY that ONE fragment and then DIE! BUT, if you have NOTHING targeted when launching the drone, it will keep collecting fragments for a long time, up to 15 minutes, depending on the "quality" rating of your "drone controller"!
Not embraced by the developers, but wavedashing (sliding along the ground after air dodging) is a "bug" in Super Smash Bros. Melee because it was unintended. Now, it's a foundational movement technique necessary for competitive play with almost any character in the game.
The aim of the game is to get the ball past the other team into the inzone. To do so they kick or run until they get tackled. After they get tackled they can watch an ad or use a token to try again until they run out of tokens/ads, then the other team gets a try. BUT they can go again if they use 10 gems, which you cant buy with in game currency, so basically it's pay to win. In game currancy is only used for cosmetics. Total rip off of a game if you ask me.
This is an old one but World of Warcraft introduced a new dungeon way back before Burning Crusade, it was a boss that would cast a comunicable disease called Corrupted Blood on players. It was removed from players as they exited the dungeons, but Blizzard forgotten to make it be removed from pets. While the disease only does moderate damage to high level players, it kills lower livel players. Players were actively spreading it on prpose too. After a time, there were piles of skeletons everywhere. It made for an interesting demonstration, that even the CDC took notice of it. Blizzard brought it back on purpose once that I know of (don't play the game anymore) . I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned.
i one time had a bug with the trees in my game so instead of fixing it i decided to say the trees were from another dimension and thats why they look so werid

In the original Space Invaders the enemies' speeding up as there were fewer onscreen was a glitch. The processors of the time couldn't handle the load so the beginning speed was due to lag.
actually, there's an alternate version of Johnny Cage's fatality glitch. if you do the ball punch right after the decapitation uppercut, it restores the head on the body.

For added context to the FF6 one, Phantom Train didn't have the Heavy property because he was undead, and undead bosses in Final Fantasy games are typically supposed to be insta-killed by spells or items that revive your party members. If he was Heavy, he would've been immune to Life/Phoenix Down, so... =)

The Meat Vendor in Shattrath City in WoW: The Burning Crusade, was accidentally placed next to a fruit cart that was built into the world. Rather than move him they just made a storyline about him getting into a blood feud with the very perplexed fruit vendor who owned the cart.

He wasn't an error though. The stat displayed as Ermac in MK1 was for error macros, which according to Ed Boon is simply a macro created to catch coding errors/traps. The listing was a rumour because ordinary people didn't understand it, not because it was an error.

Apparently monster in-fighting in Doom was actually a bug during development. It seemed interesting so they just left it in the game. It's became a fairly significant part of map design, and Doom 2 even had a cyberdemon and a spider mastermind in the same room because people always debated which one would win.
The firewall gun in Rise of the Triad was also said to be a bug during development but they decided to go with it anyway.

Makes me think of Borderlands 2. A bug caused one of Tiny Tinas eyes to randomly twitch and upon discovering the bug, the devs at gearbox decided that it was a really good fit for the erratic and somewhat mad little girl, so they left it in. In Borderlands 3 the now teenaged Tina also has a mad eye.
Tina is clearly at least 20 if you do the math.

Skiing in Starsiege:Tribes used to be pretty difficult and involved exploiting the game's physics. The devs for the sequel saw the blatant abuse of their game's engine and responded... with a button to make it easier.
Came in the comments to post this. Skiing made Tribes the action packed game it was.
Elder Scrolls Online? Animation "cancelling" was a block exploit that allowed you to use abilites faster while flailing around like a maniac, they ended up claiming "its a feature" after months of trying to fix it and failing

What about the Skyrim Giant glitch where if your hit with a giants club, you get launched into the stratosphere. After it was patched the players begged for it to return, so they put it back in and still include it in next gen versions
They also made it the special property of a unique baseball bat in Fallout 4.
It goes so naturally that I assumed it was just to show how strong giants are.

I feel like getting sent flying by giants in Skyrim is a quintessential example of this.
My first time with that glitch was so memorable. I'd just beaten that first worthless dragon, and I felt like I was the most powerful thing in the worst. Like I was playing my Morrowind character with his +2 million hp per second for 79 years potions. So I thought "I can take this pussy giant!" I hit him, and then I hit escape velocity.
to be fair, nearly all of the weird things in a Bugthesda game could probably be on this list, such as climbing a nearly vertical cliff easily via horse, because that horse doesn't give a crap about gravity or your fancy world physics, its got places to go!

That Warframe isn't on here is kind of a shame, the whole thing of Coptering with the Dual Zoren being turned into Bullet Jumps for everyone was pretty neat and honestly helped to shape the games movement systems and styles as a whole into what it is today.
Oh my god, I didn't know that Bullet Jumping started life as a bug. Considering it is pretty much the only way people move around missions now, yeah, Warframe absolutely needs to be on the commenter edition!

You left out Dragon Age: Inquisition! In the game, there's a character named Krem who has a habit of standing or sitting on the back of his chair when you enter the tavern. He usually sits down as soon as you get closer. When Bioware created the Tresspasser DLC, they worked the glitch into an affectionate moment between himself and the tavern bard, admitting he used to stand on the chair to get a better view lol.
I remember suplexing the train in FF6 and legit didn't realise it was a glitch. Good stuff, glad they kept it in re-releases.

There was a bug in Quake where players appeared to be on the wrong team. This became the Spy in Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2.
Rocket jumping was also a bug in Quake that became a huge part of the Soldier playstyle, to the point that Soldier was shown rocket jumping in some TF2 trailers.

Lee Sin from LoL's W ability (the one where he dashes and shields a target) was originally intended to only target allies. Players who tested Lee, had so much fun hopping to minions and more importantly wards, that it became a huge part of the champions' identity and gameplay loop.

The Civilization "negative aggression rollover" is an urban legend that has been debunked by the makers of the game.
Random obscure trivia about SF2: You could "unlock" the handcuffs by doing the same move again, even if time ran out on the match. You could also reset the game by using strong attacks instead of medium ones (like you would for the handcuffs bug).

There's also the "hang time" glitch from Devil May Cry where using the guns in mid air caused a drop in Dante's framerate or something,and he would pause briefly in his falling animation. The developers liked it so much it became a feature of the series.
Is it really “intentional” when EA has glitches in their games at this point?
Honestly, I've been having a really bad time with EA and their broken software recently. Saw that the whole Mass Effect trilogy is finally on Steam and decided to get it (I'm still on ME2). Turns out ME3 is a complete slideshow thanks to Origin overlay. Then decided to install Origin. Took me a whole day of troubleshooting in safe mode to get it past the installation prompt. Then when I finally installed ME3, it was giving me various DirectX and Visual C errors.
One of my friends gave me a "renegade version" of ME3. Lo and behold, it works flawlessly. I really hate when legit buyers are being hampered by launchers and DRM when pirated copies work so easily. Defeats the whole point.
same for bethesda games, just now they've used up all their consumer goodwill and it's gone from being funny to enraging

In the first Ninja Gaiden for NES, losing to any of the last three bosses sends the player back to 6-1 instead of 6-3 like intended. This was initially a bug, but the developer left it in to increase the challenge.
Saying "porpoise" instead of "purpose" on purpose and then pretending you didn't say "porpoise" on purpose so you could pretend to pretend to say "porpoise" instead of "purpose" on purpose is pretty next level. Well done.

Here's another bug that has been embraced by the developer: In the indie survival-crafting game Valheim, if you parry an enemy archer's arrow it stuns them in the same way as parrying a melee attack. It was originally a bug but the community and developers liked it and it will remain as a mechanic through its release (currently in early access).

The homing briefcase is one of the funniest things I've ever seen
Starseige Tribes initially had you using vehicles or hoofing it across massive landscapes. It was noticed that rapidly pressing the jump button would remove the friction with the ground. People started using this to gain HUGE speed "skiing" downhill, and, combined with the jetpack, players were flying all over with big air and speed.
The "skiing" mechanic was built in to every game after that.
Something similar to the homing briefcase situation was the famous Skyrim Space Program where a giant could launch your character and others into the sky. Apparently, this funny bug was so beloved by the community that when Bethesda patched it out, they told them to put it back.
I don't know if the pistol counts from Halo CE.
A last-minute coding change threw the damage all out of whack and we got the legendary destroyer of everything we know today.
I have another example: the salute interaction between Leona and Chang from the KOF games. Started as a bug but now it is in almost every game

Terraria had a glitch called the Hoik where triangular sloped blocks can be made to propel the player at high speeds along its path. This creates a new form of rail transportation that allows travel to the ends of the world faster than most other methods. Combining Hoiks and wire mechanisms, allows complex computations such as calculating addition in binary and converting it to a decimal display. Relogic kept this glitch in the game as a feature because of how much potential it opened up.
What about Starseige:Tribes? There was a bug where ground resistance wouldn't register if the player was jumping, which in combination with that fact that you had a jetpack, meant that by jumping down hills and jetting up, you could build up an insane amount of speed. This became known as “skiing” and quickly turned the game from the intended slow vehicle based tactical squad shooter into a frantic super high paced gravity ballet, and it became the main mechanic of the franchise.
Another great example was skiing in Starsiege: Tribes. It was originally a physics glitch, but it was so popular that it became a core feature in all future Tribes games.
What about the giants in Skyrim sending you to space? A feature that was removed and then added back in, and it is also featured in ESO Greymoor in a quest:)))

I've always thought the suplex on trains was an intentional joke by the devs, but that's probably because I played 7 first and had Tifa on my team, suplexing WEAPONs
Kerbal Space Program has the Kraken. Originally a glitch in the physics engine that would rip apart vessels under certain circumstances, the Kraken became a legend. The dev team embraced it, adding references to it in description text and even putting a kraken statue as an easter egg on one moon.
It also has the Mohole, a perfectly conical hole at the north pole of the planet Moho, which began as a glitch in the terrain map, but was then declared a feature.
Could we not mention the final boss of the Oxventure: The Interest of Time?
When the phantom train was a brought over as a boss in final fantasy XIV, I fought it for the first time as a monk. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t suplex it like Sabin did in ff6

Kinda disappointing that they renamed it to "Diabolic Whistle" in the FFXIV version of the fight. Also think they should've had a certain FFXIV character that's famous for his suplexes come in at the end. Seems like a missed opportunity.
I love that the character they use to demonstrate the handcuffs move in Street Fighter The Movie The Game is Chun Li, who was notoriously immune to handcuffs in the movie.

There's a bug in the first Borderlands game when you play as Mordecai and activate Bloodwing without targeting an enemy. Bloodwing would just fly around until the timer ran out or until the player targeted an opponent. In Borderlands 2 they gave this bug an endearing explanation and it all made sense.
this reminds me of an annoying quirk in Elite Dangerous:
when using Collector drones to collect rock fragments when doing asteroid mining, if you target a fragment when launching a drone, it will collect ONLY that ONE fragment and then DIE!
BUT, if you have NOTHING targeted when launching the drone, it will keep collecting fragments for a long time, up to 15 minutes, depending on the "quality" rating of your "drone controller"!
I'm surprised the Halo: Reach forge mode wasn't on this list. So many of the tools from that game were based on glitches from Halo 3.
Not embraced by the developers, but wavedashing (sliding along the ground after air dodging) is a "bug" in Super Smash Bros. Melee because it was unintended. Now, it's a foundational movement technique necessary for competitive play with almost any character in the game.

The aim of the game is to get the ball past the other team into the inzone. To do so they kick or run until they get tackled. After they get tackled they can watch an ad or use a token to try again until they run out of tokens/ads, then the other team gets a try. BUT they can go again if they use 10 gems, which you cant buy with in game currency, so basically it's pay to win. In game currancy is only used for cosmetics. Total rip off of a game if you ask me.

This is an old one but World of Warcraft introduced a new dungeon way back before Burning Crusade, it was a boss that would cast a comunicable disease called Corrupted Blood on players. It was removed from players as they exited the dungeons, but Blizzard forgotten to make it be removed from pets. While the disease only does moderate damage to high level players, it kills lower livel players. Players were actively spreading it on prpose too. After a time, there were piles of skeletons everywhere. It made for an interesting demonstration, that even the CDC took notice of it. Blizzard brought it back on purpose once that I know of (don't play the game anymore) . I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned.

I love it when Game Devs embrace glitches. And poke fun at themselves instead of saying "IT NEVER HAPPENED SHUT UP!!" It shows they know how to have fun!

In the original Space Invaders the enemies' speeding up as there were fewer onscreen was a glitch. The processors of the time couldn't handle the load so the beginning speed was due to lag.

actually, there's an alternate version of Johnny Cage's fatality glitch. if you do the ball punch right after the decapitation uppercut, it restores the head on the body.
