Look 10 Years Younger - Fashion Over 40!
It can be hard navigating new fashion trends and arguably it can be even harder as you get older - well at least that is what I generally see with my styling clients. There are always the questions of: "Am I too old to wear this?" etc. While asking ourselves these questions can be valid it can also be limiting as we try and put ourselves into a box that we don't need to be in. However, with that said there are some simple styling tips and tricks that help us not only navigate new fashion trends but help us look the very best we can for our age - whatever our age. So I do hope you enjoy today's episode and I'd really love to hear what you think of these tips and if there are any that you already follow or if there are any I've forgotten about. I love chatting in the comments so I'd love to hear your thoughts.
As always, thanks so much for watching and I look forward to seeing you real soon.
Leonie

I think we should all focus more on saying "looking current" over "looking younger"...
That’s a great idea 👍🏼
@@Thestyleinsider. Looking current helps us "older gals".... errrr, more "seasoned gals" 😆 look and feel youthful
Yes!!
Pam CC love it 🥰
Perfectly stated, totally agree with you.
I am 67 and born US Old South and I am getting ready to wear white jeans after Labor Day for the first time in my life😂 I feel so radical
Love that! Live on the edge Cathy LOL x
You go girl! I love wearing white jeans and a camel colored turtleneck with same color belt and shoes.
@@verawhite1586 it’s a very chic look that I love!😊
Absolutely love your boldness!
Do you!! In the immortal words of Pee Wee Herman, "I'm a loner, Dottie, a rebel..." 😁
I had no idea that you were 55!!! You look fantastic! In my opinion, your hair looks healthy and very pretty. I’m glad that you encouraged others to do what they are comfortable with and not what others think they should do!😊
Thank you so much Barbara x
I agree 100%
I am also 55, and I have always had short hair, but your hair is absolutely perfect on you!! I can not wear my hair long, but you most definitely can, and it looks beautiful. No bangs!!! You are beautiful!!
What's ironic is if you hang on long enough to a certain style - it inevitably comes back in fashion. Old enough to have seen some trends recycle twice now! I am so bemused by the re-appearance of leg warmers (Flashdance flash backs!) I am also going to bet that chunky jewelry will come back in vogue again LOL. I also believe in going with what I love (in my case its tie dye but I do tend to keep it more for vacation & summer wear) regardless of whether fashion dictates if it's in style or not. But totally agree with keeping an eye to trends and also color changes with age. With grey hair, I have had to change out some of the colors in my wardrobe.
I’m 26 and this advice is applicable even for me. I’m hitting a sweet spot in life where I’m learning that style has no age-limit. Trust me, I’ve been out-dressed and completely swept under the rug by women who were sometimes twice my age…on MANY occasions.
See, there’s youthfulness, and then theres timelessness - and I feel like timeless beauty triumphs nearly every time - simply because as humans I think we tend to appreciate things that we know took much more time to refine.
I just wanted to say that I genuinely look up to our mature women in the beauty world. They’re the OG gurus who’s fashion sense and hair/makeup techniques all the younger generations are imitating right now like CRAZY. So I really love to see those of you who actually INVENTED those trends just out and about now. Especially because you’re the ones who’ve actually had the kids, earned the smile lines, survived some sh*t and taken enough risks to learn the *good* lessons in life - and it certainly shows when I see you getting dolled up and walking out the door looking self-assured and hot as hell.
Idk. It’s like mature women have the one thing that us 20-something’s don’t - and that’s *being comfortable with who they are,* genuinely understanding what it means to have confidence in themselves. They walk around with an inner peace that only comes with age and wisdom, like “Yeah, I still got it because I really am THAT chick.” It just exudes beauty and presence and sex-appeal unlike anything I’ve EVER seen come from my millennial and gen-z peers. It’s your superpower. It’s the secret ingredient in life that I just I can’t wait to earn for myself one day, too.
Y’all are just so badass and so freaking pretty and I know you know it! ❤
What an awesome compliment! Thank you.
Thank you! I'm 61 y.o.. I'm 5', 96 lbs. I swim a mile a day. I went to the gym... the salesman told me, "You have the body of a 22 y.o., you don't need a gym membership, whatever you're doing is working." 😆
I always tell my husband, you need to look modern and updated. I don’t want either of us to look old and frumpy. I buy all my husband‘s clothes, he gets compliments that he looks great. I love banana republic for men’s clothes. I also dress him and Ralph Lauren. I’m lucky that I have the opportunity to be able to buy things that are a little more expensive but high-quality. I am a Ralph Lauren girl and a Ann Taylor girl. I also love Talbots. I have a simple classic capsule wardrobe. I buy new updated shoes and accessories. My clothes are always in style because they’re classics. I am 66 and I spent 30 years as a hairstylist. I no longer wear very much black, because I had to wear it for years for work.
Don’t change yourself for anyone. I’m with you on the hair. Everyone bothers me to cut my hair which is like yours and I refuse. Long hair for me is much easier and makes me feel good. When someone makes a comment I just smile and say “what you see is what you get”!
I think your hair is great! I definitely understand having a simple hair style for your lifestyle. I also keep my hair long and very rarely curl it. I need to have it tied back and out of the way for sailing and skiing. When I worked as an engineer in the oil field it also made sense for it to be back. I am 61 and still wear braids! BTW, it would be fun to see a video of your old photos with other hair & makeup styles through the years.
So great that you get it - I exercise and walk my dogs every day so need to tie my hair back. It’s just practical for me 😳😂 And funny you mention the old pics because I was going to poo a few into this video and just forgot 🤦🏻♀️😂
@@Thestyleinsider. Please post some!!
I'm also 55, and I work in the arts and get alot of compliments from all ages on my cutting edge fashion sense, as you also do. I always wear trends that young people are wearing, such as platform shoes, street wear hoodies, wide leg pants, statement jewelry. Actually it was our generation that originally wore these looks and they still look good on us at any age. Fashion has no age expiry date. I think your off the mark on this advice, although you contradicted yourself on the last point , stop limiting yourself. Fashion has no age limit, be creative, be bold, and you will inspire others .
Your comment made me laugh. I would love to see how you dress. Sounds interesting and atractive. What woud you call it? Upscale street wear style? Platform shoes, is that new for you since last year when Versace came out with them, or is that your jam?
Agreed, Traylong!
I’m also 55. I’m learning more and more the importance of being your authentic self no matter your age.
Yes I feel that too Yvette - I definitely feel my best when I'm being true to myself x
Very honest. Your take on aging gracefully is much appreciated. Looking good at our age is such an achievable goal; versus the floods of videos that prime gals for trying to look younger than we are. Thank you.
Thanks Bonnie 😊
Thank you for your candour!
I’m so tired of UA-cam comments that say, “I’m 75 and everyone thinks I’m 40!”
I work with the public and trust me, there are not THAT many people that impress me with their youth. Some people look GOOD, and that’s just fine!
I’m 43 and that’s just fine with me! Whatever!! We all age differently!
BTW: you look great! 🙌
Thank you so much x
I love that you are unapologetic about YOUR choice of hairstyle. Everyone has an opinion about what you woulda, shoulda, coulda do. Who cares! You have to do what works for you and if other people don't like it, that is their problem.
Having worn medical scrubs for decades which need little fashion sense, I have hired personal stylists many times especially when presented with special occasions. It's always been a blast shopping with someone who has your best interest in mind!
I think we should wear whatever we want no matter our age, as long as it makes us happy. That's all that matters. Thanks for another great video Leonie. 💖
Absolutely agree
Amen so true
So true!
i do agree. im 46 and are sports build. shorts, leggings, short dresses etc my style. but i like to have that femine softer look to. and thats why i look here now for help.
I totally agree about keeping the hairstyle simple for those of us with busy lifestyles. I've never been good at curling, straightening, training my hair to look like a magazine style, so I keep it simple. And I don't believe long hair ages a person unless the hair is unkempt or unhealthy. As a matter of fact, I have to exercise before work every morning, so not only do I keep my hair simple, I also keep my daily makeup simple. Just moisturizer & concealer. People still act surprised when I tell them I have a 34 yr old child. I will say, tho, that menopause has drastically changed my body, so I'm now back at square one trying to figure out how to dress. I'll try some of your tips!
I'm with you on the hairstyle thing! All I do is wash my hair-- almost never blow dry or do any form of styling. And I see myself living the rest of my life that way!
I am 65 and love my platinum hair, of course in a loose short style. I personally have been dressing more edgy and forward thinking , but I stay true to what I feel represents my style the best. I leave myself open to new ideas but I definitely know what I like and don’t like. Classics are still cool as well I like to mix them up. Makeup stays easy and light
Looking great at any age is possible. Youth is greatly overrated. As I've gotten older, I've become happier, more grounded, at peace & joyful in all areas of my life, including finally finding my style. And I agree with being fresh & modern without being trendy & too young girlish.
Denims and sneakers are timeless in my opinion! Too old to wear jeans? Nah....from a fellow 55 year old!
Good idea for a video, I think the most imporatnt thing is state of mind like you said at the end. Most old people give up because ''no one cares". One has to find internal reasons to keep looking our best, being clean, well dressed, somewhat fashionable, some makeup, keep our weight down, and posture up, Also about state of mind, I'm a minimialist, so I always need to add an accessory, but I think it's awesome how some old women have been everywhere and collected cool jewerly, now wear it. Look at Iris Arpel, no one wears as much jewerly as she does, lol. I also think we need to use our competitive advantage which is more money. I joke that I may not have the chest I did when i was young but now I can afford the best bra. btw, I've noticed that my older friends need to update their under garmets more than clothes even. Good idea for a video, thanks for sharing !
Jeans and trainers are classic, as long as we don’t choose the extreme “young styles”, eg super distressed, super oversized, super short etc.
You are true to yourself You still are lovely inside and out. Blessings
❤
Definite 'yes' to the beauty video! You look amazing for 55! xx
Oh thank you!
Thanks Leonie! After a lifetime of hating my hair and having to style it every single time unless it was tied up, (it even looked horrendous tied up if it was left with its natural curl), I decided to permanently straighten it. I’m 54 years old. And I now LOVE my hair. All I need to do is wash it and let it air dry and it looks a thousand times better than it ever did. And I don’t have to spend time styling it. So definitely understand when you say that you don’t want to spend time styling your hair. We must do what suits our lifestyle.
Wow that is so fab to hear. I bet you wished you'd permanently straightened it years ago lol. But better late than never right? x
@@Thestyleinsider. yes I wish I had done it ages ago!
I love your channel ! Always giving great tips!
Hi Lionni, I love your channel!I'd love to see you do a video of trends for young people that make us look older when we copy. I'm 53, and would like to see what I need to avoid. I'd also love to see a video of your favorite makeup items. Thanks!
I’m 55 and I often tell ppl I’m not trying too look younger.. I’m just want to make “55” look great😃
Me too 👏🏼
Women have to build each other up and support each other. If my 72 year old friend wants to wear leggings and thigh high boots I am cheering her on. PS she looked stunning. Your hair is gorgeous and I mean that Leonie.
Your intro made me smile. I am a similar age to you, have the same hair style for the same reasons you stated, have also tried lots of different styles and colour and have received similar comments. My key style words are comfort, classic, dramatic because they reflect my lifestyle and my personality. I receive regular compliments because being true and authentic to yourself generates a certain confidence and this, I think, is the key to looking youthful if not younger.
I love that you spoke up about your personal choice when it comes to your hair style. Thanks Leonie. Great as always.
I totally agree with you about hair styles. Spending time on my hair isn’t something I’m going to do either Sometimes “styled” hair can can come off as a little to fixed for my tastes. As far as colors I had two color analysis done-both gifts and they were very helpful. Changing pants silhouettes and dressing for shape balance has been something I’m exploring. Lastly, simplicity goes a long way for anyone.
55! Are you sure?? You look amazing! The trend I’m going for these days out is the wide leg jeans and trousers.. I love it with button up blouses and shirts and sneakers. Its great for on the go. I recently bought a wide leg cargo pants from banana republic factory. It’s high wasted and wore it with a taupe tank top and sneakers. It felt a little young at first but ended up really enjoying the look
Always love your advice
Loved this video, I agree with these tips, and I LOVE your hair just like it is!! 🥰 Lisa
Love your tips. You look great. Do whatever you want with your look.
This is funny: during Covid, I let my hair grow out and it is very much like yours! I ended up preferring to not mess with it, either. I think it actually looks youthful on me. Now that I have retired, I am wearing leisure wear most of the time but I have been more mindful about putting my casual outfits together and upgrading. I feel good so I look better!
Fantastic content loved it ❤btw your hair looks lovely 🥰
What a cool topic for a vlog! I agree wholeheartedly with your styling tips. As a 64 year old, I love the fun and interesting aspects of what to wear each day and for different occasions. you have nailed it with your helpful hints.
Love that and thank you Viki!
I think your hair looks fabulous!! Keep doing what makes YOU happy! 😊
Thanks Angela x
great video! I agree with having a hairstyle that fits your lifestyle!
Your hair is lovely, and your style is youthful…that’s why I like your channel!
Such great tips, thank you for this video! I love that you said that you are happy with your age and you just want to dress and be the best version of that, this is something I can absolutely relate to. :)
I just have one comment about short hair, I got mine cut 6 months ago (previously I had all kind of length, but short), I went from shoulder length to long pixie. I couldn't be happier with it, and it takes me much less time to get it ready, than before. :)
I like the way you wear your hair because it’s you! And it’s a good look for you!
💟 Sure Leonie, I'd enjoy hearing about your favorite makeup products. Not sure if your choices are available in the U.S. but it's always fun to find out what works for each person! Shoes have always been my passion & variety is the spice of life with my shoe collection!!! Also coats, jewelry & handbags are also my favs, but I always keep the " less is more" approach when styling !!! Exactly, I agree, do not limit yourself... be happy & comfy & you'll look good !!!
Thanks for sharing......💟💜💟
If you go to the department store like H&M Zara They usually have their clothes with pieces that belong with each other it’s almost like having a stylist there for instance they’ll have a sweater and other pieces that you could match with each other you just have to pay attention it’s all there even the accessories thank you for sharing and your hair looks great as long as your hair is healthy it will make you look younger Overprocessed hair will make you look older So does a lot of make up with make up as you get older or less is better
Such a great point Zlatinka and thank you x
Great observation!
Would love to see a video of your fave makeup and skincare, thank you!
Love your hair!
You look so much younger!!!!!! Good for you!!
Your hair looks great !! Thank you for the video!!
Thank you so much Norma!! 😊
Yes to a makeup video!
I agree. And thank you. I think feeling comfortable and being happy in what you are wearing makes a huge difference. So the mature woman can pull off something unique with grace if she owns it. It need not be exaggerated, but a mature woman open to new things can pull off a lot. I love color. Always have. So at 61, I wear bright colors. It suits me. I am no longer thin, so my colors are on top. And I try to balance as you suggested. Crazy shoes make me happy. So I own color and crazy shoes. Everything else, I’m more moderate. Always open to new ideas. A little at a time.
I really love your tips! Especially about creating balance and going for fit at the top loose at the bottom and vice versa!!! I think it’s better to have a shape and accentuate your curves ! ❤❤❤❤your advices are the best
You look great! I don’t think curly hair makes you look younger. Your style is simple and chic!👩
I love your hair!
❤love ur tips spot on
Great segment Leonie. Agree with your take on your hair style suiting your life style. Your off centre part and clean lines really flatters your face shape too.
Thanks for the practical tips and encouragement!!
You are so welcome!
I always love your videos, your tips are practical and easy. I love your new graphics!
Thanks so much Charlotte and thanks for noticing the graphics - I love trying something new and fresh so really appreciate you noticed.
I love how you state, "look the best for my age." I totally agree! I don't necessarily want to look younger just great!
Indeed, Stacie! I loved the video, however, it was difficult to listen to after the Word… ‘Young’ was emphasized so many times!
You look great! Wear your hair like you prefer. Easy care is wonderful! Do the best you can with what you have and enjoy life. A smile and positive attitude are your best beauty tools!
I would be interested in knowing your make up products. I would really enjoy seeing how you put on your makeup.
Great video!
Love this (and your hair) 😉
You don't need any of that Leoni you're gorgeous just the way you are. Thank you for being true to yourself and us.🥰
Thank you SO much Karen x
I love your hair style Leonie, , it is your signature, and that gives us comfort and stability in a way , if you know what I mean , and thanks for all the shortcuts you gave us through the years. 🌹
Oh thank you so much Elsa - that's so lovely to hear x
I mentioned this in one of your previous videos, but your new lip colour is very flattering to your skin tone and makes your face glow (look younger). It must have been part of your recent trip to Sephora...good choice!
What a great video. I like your attitude to your hair style. I totally agree. Id love to see your make up tips and tricks and products. Love your videos!
Thank you so much Angela!!
Great tips, thanks! Another reason to avoid big accessories/chunky jewelry is the comfort factor. In hot or cold weather, jewelry only makes that worse, especially in humid climates. I moved to south FL from Colorado in 2000, and within a month, I got rid of every chunky necklace, and stopped wearing bracelets/watches.
I love your hair!!!!
I completely agree about the hair issues! My hair is quite like yours, reaching just past my shoulders and very straight. Is it the most flattering it could be? NOPE! But I also go to the gym several times a week and need to pull it back for that. Otherwise, I'm mostly home. I'm not going to spend time fussing with it for my big audience of one! Life style IS at least as important as looks.
I am 46 and tend to dress much younger than my age, hence why people think I'm 13 years younger.
Could you please do a video on real outfits we could wear that fits all the criteria you mention in this video, I mean lots of daily ones.
One thing I won't stop doing is wearing large earrings, I have my own (side hustle) jewellery brand, I need to promote them on me.
Proud of u for going for works vs/trending‼️‼️🥰
Thanks Barbara x
Wow, those yellow trousers it's in a fabulous soft yellow.
Hair is confidence !!!
Ok, I'm pausing right now to say, you are gorgeous and vibrant as you are!!! I'm going to be 52 in a few weeks and I also do not choose to take time to style my hair as in straighten, blow dry, etc for me. I do strive to look my best but there's no disguising I am in my 50's, now, I've learned my facial lines, it is what it is, I do my best to look current and stylish within my means and reason.. and I'm fine with it. I have to honor my lifestyle which is that I'm a stay at home , homeschooling single mama, a full time caregiver for my elderly mother who has advanced stages of Alzheimer's and dementia. I'm not going to sacrifice my precious time to myself trying to maintain a look I cannot reasonably sustain. Good for you for being true to yourself.
I am with you on the hair. I have very fine hair and the shorter I go the more I have to do daily to make it look nice.....thar just does not work with my very casual lifestyle.
At 67 I still reach for jeans and sneakers every day. I just style them with nice tops which I like to tuck, half tuck or other styling tricks. I also like at least earrings and sometimes more.
A hard relate to hairstyle point. 10 years I got hair straightened n never looked back. One less thing to worry about with young kids and a hectic job.
On the other hand I found asking others about shopping not so helpful. Sometimes I want to try a trend and I ask around and people would be more reluctant to recommend to try it or be already done with that trend because it's everywhere. After listening to them I would give up my idea and fast forward a few weeks or months and they are themselves wearing that very trend. So I have stopped listening to others and started going with my gut. Colors n fit recommendations are still welcome.
Love your channel and your hair style. It suits you and looks youthful.
Aww thank you so much that’s very kind of you to say 😘
You are right to keep your hair the way it you like it and suits your lifestyle. Love your videos and content!
Simplicity empowering radiating 💝
Thank you x
You look like you are in your 30’s! With no bangs and curls!! You are gorgeous and I truly appreciate you making these videos( I know how long they take to edit etc…) I learn something new with each one I watch. Your hair is shiny, healthy and gorgeous.
Aww thanks so much for your kindness Jo 😊
I love your thoughts in this video! I have also found that learning my Kibbe Body Type has been super helpful. It is uncanny how the clothing suggestions for my body type totally fits with my "vibe".
Thanks for sharing!!
I agree Pam, I prefer "looking current "
I do absolutely love your videos:)
Your hair is beautiful ❤don’t change it ❤
Loved it fantastic ideas advice and helpful hints 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thanks so much!!
Great video. I remember Fashion Quarterly & loved it! (Here in Oz.)
Oh wow 🤩
Well, Leoni, I would say you look like early 40’s!!!! Thanks again for all of the great tips!🥂💕
Wow, thank you!
Love your shirt
You're 55?! What?! Machallah you look amazing, I'd say 42 at most.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for your amazing videos dear! Yes to beginner ballet videos. I look forward to watch every video you share❤
Glad you like them!
Love your channel & learned so much from it!! I don't look (or feel lol) my age, so when I show up in a pokemon t-shirt & pink converse no one bats an eye. In fact people would wonder what was wrong if I didn't throw on something quirky, lol. But everything styled to my skin tone, body.type, etc so still looks great 😁
That's awesome Jenni - love it!
I agree about trusting your institution, like you say, a lot of times if it makes feel good, it’s good!
I hope I look half as good as you when and if I get to live to your age.
Great vid 💕
Thank you x
Your hair looks great!
Thank you 😊
Leonie, I am also lazy when it come to my hair, and my friend get on my case because they are like your outfits are nice but you not doing the makeup or hair and that I should make that extra effort. Yeah, everyone may need to freshen it up and it could just be the way of styling what in your closet. My theme in dressing is that I will not be my grandma and that keeps me enthusiastic about fashion (she would not even wear pants). Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.
😘
I love your hair
Brilliant video, thank you. I love your hair, and you definitely look younger than 55.
Right, Leoni do you & you look beautiful just as you are 😘 I really appreciate your videos. They are very informative and enjoyable. Please keep them coming 🥰😊
Thank you so much 😊
I'm 55 but look 35 so it isn't hard for me to wear trends to my classic style. I like your hair. New subscriber ❤️
Most important one is not moving with the times. This makes even relatively young people look old. Btw, your hair looks great and suits you! No reason to fuss with bangs or a perm, I agree!
