10 Fashion Classics You Should Never Part With | Fall 2022 Fashion Trends
A few years back I did a major Marie Kondo on my closet and decluttered it to within an inch of its life! I was fairly extreme in my decluttering because I was moving house and moving into a much smaller closet. So it really was a case of needs must but if I had my time over there would be a number of items I would have most definitely hung onto. Namely my fab knee high leather boot collection and a few of my much-loved designer dresses.
While I mostly don't regret letting go of the pieces I did, there will always be a pang of sadness about a few pieces (that if really honest) I'd still like to own. With all of the fab new Fall 2022 fashion trends on offer at the moment I know how tempting it can be to move out pieces you've owned for a long time to make way for the new. But often those pieces that have been with you for the longest are the ones that you most need to hang on to. The shine wears off them and they may not have any hanger appeal but they can still be some of the hardest working pieces you own.
Anyway, I'm hoping that today's video serves as a gentle reminder to think twice before parting with some of your key fashion pieces - especially when it's tempting to buy new fashion trends for the colder months ahead.
As always, thanks so much for watching and I look forward to seeing you real soon.

Regret 90 % of my decluttering . I shop carefully and intentionally and that stupid rule of « if you have not worn it for a year, get rid of it » was my downfall. ☹️

I’m 68 and have to totally agree - never discard anything of quality or basics such as jeans, jackets and coats, trousers etc. In fact if you have those vacuum storage bags store them under the bed! Quality in clothes have deteriorated over the years and natural fabrics we could buy in cheaper shops in my younger days are a thing of the past - now things I bought at “cheaper” shops are “quality’ fabrics with lots of sewing details and have moved up to higher end shops. As long as you try to maintain your weight you can wear things from 30 years ago when they come back again and you look fab and everyone asks where you got a piece as it’s “original “ lol!

That’s so true. I’m still finding quality pieces in thrift stores and when I do I know I’ll have them for years.

Totally, the quality has really gone down in last 2 years, sizing all over the place now and this recycled polyester is very crunchy! They must have given contracts to new factories with no fitting models! 100% cotton belvet is hard to come by, and the more common velour polyester is very thin and creases. So many regrets getting rid of some quality pieces that are now 'in'!

Finally someone said it- SAVE some items instead of decluttering everything! I never bought into all these drastic decluttering trends over the past several years. It seemed so wasteful overall. I disliked the minimalist trends so much. I have kept so many items and much of wardrobe for years and it makes me happy. Clothes were much better quality years ago too!

I used to work for a leather clothing company in the early 90's. I just got rid of the bulk of my stash ( 3 jackets,3 pairs of pants and 7 suede and leather mini and pencil skirts) because the waist bands were a bit too tight and the shoulders were ridiculously wide. I know wide shoulder are in but I wore them 90's and mid size shoulder pads suit my small frame . I know some young girl will think she won the lottery at my local charity shop.

I never part ways with scarves, belts and leather purses. I always keep jewelry that is in good shape. They don't take up space and always manage to come back in style. I have a wonderful elephant buckle belt that still brings me joy and is 50 years old. An expensive scarf never goes out of style. Buy quality and enjoy forever.

You're so right about keeping leather! In the late 1980s I got my first full-time job and blew my first month's pay packet on a fabulous leather jacket from an upmarket shop. It's a black oversized bomber in buttery soft Italian leather with fabulous woven leather panels down the sides, and I've kept it all these years. I make sure it's safely stored and cared for so it's still in pristine condition. Every few years, black leather and/or bombers come back in style so I trot it out and enjoy the memory of how excited I was to buy it, and enjoy the compliments it usually brings. This year, black leather bombers are back in style, so it's back in my main wardrobe ready to wear!

Love your comment, and agree totally. I went back from vegetarian for health reasons, some of us just genetically need to eat meat. But please (and I mean this in a nice way) consign 'buttery' to the bin. It's so overused and it doesn't add anything to soft. 'Squishy' 'schmooshy' likewise are terrible terms. Keep the rest!

yes. Great idea for a video. I feel the whole idea of "get rid of everything not giving you joy at this instant" is quite a privileged position and a bit silly from a "style always cycles back" perspective. Since I have a little bit of room to store, I keep things, put them away when I've worn out their welcome, then bring them back out years later. It's super-fun.

These are so TRUE. I literally have my Mom's knee high oxblood leather knee high boots with block heels from the 1960s and they're so well made 🫶 I just condition and clean them at least 2x a year and store them in my closet and over the last 25+ years they've proven to be keepers 👌 I would add sequins and/or special occasion formal wear because you'd be surprised how you can reinvent, wear to parties/fancy dress events etc

I agree! I have clothes from 30 years ago that I have hung on to and pull them out every once in awhile because they are CLASSIC and well made items. I almost always receive complements on them. Some decluttering is good but I’ve learned the hard way that classic well made basics shouldn’t be decluttered. I still miss some of those things. 😢

I hung on to a tan-coloured leather bomber, brown leather straight pantts, a classic black leather trench plus a maxi-length black leather A-line fur-lined coat which makes me feel like a Russian princess, both bought in the early 2000s. And now? Guess what? I'm glad all over I found the space for them and moved them when I changed homes.
I have classic RayBan aviators from the 70s and a pair of Hugo Boss large oval-shaped sunnies purchased around 2001. So happy I have them. Still waiting for my Prada shield sunglasses to come back.

Lol I can definitely relate to not-getting-rid-of-leather. I went through a dietary change that was against leather, where people encouraged me to get rid of my stash. I just couldn’t. I didn’t have the heart to let go of my collection. 🧥 half a decade later I’m eating meat again and I realize that my leather pieces are (and always will be) staples in my wardrobe

I had been seeing alot of them for sale.I save LOT and have much higer quality wardrobe than I would have otherwise because fabrIcs keep getting cheaper and cheaper in mainstream stores while quañity garment prices are nearly DOUBLE THIS YEAR.

I've brought in a supply of straight leg jeans but am keeping my skinnies for (now) wearing under knee high boots and (later) wearing again if I'm still alive when they come back. I love my Chuck Taylors! I don't think you should super-crop your denim jacket. I think you should thrift one for that purpose. I don't care for the super-crop myself but that's neither here nor there. There must be something you like about your present jacket since you've worn it in the past. Store it for a while.

Truly enjoyed this as at age 75 I was beginning to wonder if I had morphed into a hoarder as a number of items you mentioned, I have held on to .... lol! For example on the subject of leather (besides some of my shoes and purses) while recently deep diving into my outerwear winter closet (I live in Canada) I came across two jackets that my now 48 year old daughter wore back in high school; one being a black leather moto and the other a brown leather bomber one, which at that time were purchased in what was known as 'the leather district' located in another city, given reason why I even held on to them (as my style is more classic not to mention their leather is beautiful and the workmanship superb). Now fast forward and long story short; they now fit her sixteen year old daughter who is ecstatic to be the new owner of them being a win-win situation for the both of us. (She is in style and two-less pieces in my closet.) Edit=wording

I hold on to all of my classics. Many people have commented how come everything of mine coordinates…I don’t buy unless it fits in my wardrobe or my reaction is visceral because that clothing item makes me feel like a rock star when I wear it. Maybe it is just me, but if something makes me feel confident I wear it, to hell with a trend.

I was on COVID home isolation for almost two and a half years (high risk), so I ignored that “not worn in year” rule. I never left the house, so I only wore leggings, t-shirts and baggy dresses. Not that I pay attention to fashion “rules” anyway, except the rule of one-in, one-out, which I used most of my life. Now my wardrobe has really expanded, because of lockdown-boredom online shopping, but that’s ok, too. I did waste some money, but I don’t beat myself up for it (too much), it gave me something to think about and do during that isolated time, I consider it just a direct cost of the pandemic. I keep “decluttering” my bug wardrobe, but I decided if I love something, I’m keeping it. I could never be a wardrobe minimalist, I just love clothes and accessories too much and would get really sick of the all solid-beige and black wardrobes that many fashion YTers have.

Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers are definitely a classic. So often I go to wear an outfit with a different pair of sneakers or flat shoes, and opt for the Chucks because they look the best with those outfits. I have the black velvet high tops and they go with so much and add a little dressiness to the look. I always keep my leather and suede jackets if they still fit because no matter what style they are, they always come back in style at some point. If it's the "real deal" and it still fits within a size up or down from my current size, I keep it.

I’ve gotten rid of a number of denim jackets over the years, then regretted it, then got another which I also would get rid of. I finally figured out that it’s because I look like a little boy in them. It’s the same with blazers. I’ve never felt good wearing a blazer. Every time I step out the door with one on I regret it. But they’re a necessary evil because I need a few for certain occasions.
On my next blazer purge I’ve decided to only keep three blazers - a 100% wool double breasted black one that fits perfectly, a corduroy one that’s good for fall and is in a colour I like and a cotton one for summer that I haven’t found yet.

The "style change" reallity shows from early 00's told the contestants to simply get rid of every chunky heel square toe shoe/boots, as pointy heals and toes were the only thing 'in'. To be honest, I couldn't even look at my old shoes, even found them grotesque in that squarish shape 😂😂 but I could never throw things out, just forgot about them in the basement. Well, it was worth it because trends and fashion absolutely come back! 🙆

Totally agree with all categories because I am a hold on type of person (hoarder?), and I have some items in my closet that are older than my 33-year-old daughter. I pulled out a couple of 2 pc set and I got a lot of compliments on them both are the pull-on plain flowy gauzy wide leg pants and the sleeveless button up printed tunic length matching colors. I call these my Maude (it uses to be a sitcom here in America) suits. I have I think one pair of chucks and I have not even worn them yet and I have had them for many years. See the idea of holding on to items are really necessary for someone with a tight budget because designer hare constantly putting hard changes on the runway. Just in a two year span it went from pointed toe shoes to square to and now right back to include pointed again also. The same with the width of pants legs. Since I have all these different shapes in my closet, I am good to good. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

For purging I let go all my 00, 0, and size 2 items that I used to fit into 10 years ago. Now I have to fight hard to get back and stay in those sizes. My easy to maintain sizes are 4, 6, and size 27 waist. If I grew into bigger larger sizes it means I am out of shape, not eating healthy, and stop exercising. My body and mind are much healthier being in a size that feels the most comfortable.

Agree totally with the denim jacket. I've only parted with mine in the past due to gaining weight, but it's such a staple item and has been for so long. It's the casual version of the "little black dress". Not a Chuck Taylor fan, they didn't fit my feet right, but I did discover Vans and they too are a wonderful casual shoe that can cover so many different situations. I'd never part with my Vans. I love the idea of altering one of your old denim jackets since you already have several!

I LOVE this video. You are so right - and you're the only fashion expert I've seen saying this! Most encourage my favorite "sport" which is to declutter; and I have let go of some things I regret letting go of. Wish this video (an UA-cam) had been around back then! Yes, I think anything with a classic shape that looks good on you and is of good quality is a keeper - whether it's in or out of style. And if you can sew, sure why not experiment with your denim jacket?!

All great choices. I have a denim jacket and slipdress that I'm not wearing that I will hang on to. I almost gave away a pair of gold Chuck Taylors a few years ago, and now I wear them all the time. I'm so glad I kept them until they inspired me. They elevate a casual outfit just a little, or add a fun casual element to a more upscale outfit like a suit or nice dress.

I don't own a pair of Chucks and I like them!! I love my puffer jackets but they aren't as puffy as the ones I see today. Yes I totally agree with all your Keepers! The models you show are so helpful to see how I can wear what I already have. I have a black slip dress (just fits me), black boots with heels that aren't really in fashion today but a classic and I love them. Thank for sharing your common sense and expertise in fashion.

The first Chuck Taylor Converse came out in 1917. I’ve been collecting mine since 1985, when I first saw them in Back to the Future. I was 14, and a girl who wanted to dress like Marty.

😍 Preferred the equally slim profile white leather wrestling high tops that were popular back in the 80s. 😉They struck me as being more simple & streamline. Felt like they coordinated better with my more girly style too.
🤗Nowadays, I have a variety of colorful low top Champion canvas Keds & leather slip-on Vans. The former sneakers always felt more feminine & preppy〰️while the latter ones bring back 😎memories of hanging out beach ⛱️ side w/my big brother's surfing 🏄‍♂️ & skateboarding🛹 buds.

I'd like to add last years chunky funky chucks to my collection when I can find them and of course at a good non budget busting price. Love your videos! Agree on all your points except the converse which I've never owned or worn. I 100% agree on any leather or suede items. I got rid of some over 20 years ago and an still upset about it. I would have continued to wear them and haven't ever seen anything like what I owned as they were unique designer pieces. I agree with others that's it's incredibly refreshing to see a video on what to keep instead of "get rid of everything" videos!!! Thanks! A great job on key and important wardrobe items. As a tip- I keep 2 shorty wardrobe boxes in my garage and rotate clothes out by season, what's in style and what currently fits me. Super easy to add and remove items from these type of boxes.

I have 4 denim jackets of varying styles: light and dark denim plus a white, one with faux fur colour and one lined with red flannel. Love them all❤. Will keep all my fine fabrics, silks, linen, cashmere and 2 leather jackets. l’ve always loved a white shirt, looks great on everyone. I would like a slip dress, just not sure where to get one?! I never wore slip dresses in the past until maybe 3yrs ago n still need more as they can easily make one look put together. I find converse very sore, I prefer leather shoes as they stretch including takkies.
