  • Mega Manufacturing: Pirelli - The most renowned tyre manufacturer in the world | 4K Engineering Documentary
How do you create the perfect tire for the road and for the race track? Pirelli: the most famous tire manufacturer in the world.
It is the most renowned tyre manufacturer in the world: Pirelli. Their capacity: 75 million car tyres a year. 32,000 employees worldwide, including 1,400 engineers. The most prestigious car manufacturers in the world rely on their experience. We follow the production of the P-Zero, Pirelli's flagship product. It takes: 100 constituent materials, fifteen manufacturing steps, and over 50 performance tests undertaken in high-tech laboratories. All for achieving the best possible compromise between three irreconcilable and contradictory properties: low rolling resistance, strong grip and low wear. Only then will the P Zero, take to the streets of the world.
In Settimo Torinese, Italy, the company manufactures its high-tech tires on 200,000 square meters of floor space. Natural rubber is the basic raw material for around 130 years. But yet, a tire is so much more than simply rubber. The secrets of this Mega Manufacturing operation lie in the other ingredients too: A precisely measured blend of fillers, antioxidants, plasticizers, and curing agents. A car tire is a complex high-tech product with many individual layers. Up to ten different rubber compounds are required for different zones of the tire. Together with textile fibers and steel wires. Only then tires are able to withstand extreme stresses.
A new tyre is specially developed for each car brand. The P-Zeros development is based on the experience gathered in the Formula One World Championship, for which Pirelli is the sole supplier. We make a detour to the development and testing department at Pirelli's headquarters in Milan and accompany a new P-Zero to the test track.

The Pirelli tire has such good traction because it uses a softer rubber compound, hence the reason they wear out so quick. I used a set of Pirelli on my '73 Z-28 with a 650 H.P. engine and it was incredible, but ended up replacing them in less than 1 year because they wore out. If Pirelli would come out with a tire that could last longer and was priced about the same as other manufacturers, they would sell a lot more tires. With them costing so much and wearing out so quick, many people don't go back to them when they have to replace their tires.

Pirelli need's to step their game up! Michelin is a whole step ahead of the game right now... I have P Zero's on my car now, but honestly my next set is going to be Michelin's. The difference is a no brainer!

Is very important to know never buy tires more then 3 years old from production date. I bought last time some pirellis on sale and after 2 years got full cracks. When I checked tires was 7 years old . I know in many eu countries tires after 5 years is required to replace , they count expired

I worked for the biggest independent tire company in the US and always got to test all sorts of tires in different environments/test tracks. Pirelli was always outstanding, but the wear life on them was kind of disappointing in our region and environment. Michelin seem to last longer for normal everyday driving in my case.
Remember you get what you pay for - very true in the tire world!

    • @TheDnlnext
      @TheDnlnext 4 роки тому +1

Wesley Alth - really depends on the type of vehicle (size) and how aggressive your driving habits. Also, you need to consider ones maintainability and needing rotating. I have a 2019 F150 and 2018 Explorer and those run about $200-250 per tire (OEM Hankooks). I have a Honda Pilot also and Michelins were about $150 per.
Keep in mind tires are the only thing that makes contact on the road, and keep you grounded in all weather environments.

I've gotten 19k miles on my small SUV that came with Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires. It's a grocery getter that got 2 years of average driving out of the stock tires. That is really bad, but not nearly as bad as Pirelli's attempts to ignore the problem and complaints about it.

Put a brand new set of Pirelli grand touring's on a small vehicle I drive conservatively - 20k miles on them - 3 of the 4 are heavily wavy and causing tons of road noise. Brand new suspension/control arms, etc. No misalignment, adequate inflation, just all wavy. Any ideas about the cause?

One question I got that would be great to know is are they working on a tire that smokes more and give more grip for the newer sport of drifting or are they more so sticking with high speed racing and grip racing as for drifting to have a really good sticky front tire and little grip but one the can lay out the smoke and go rounds for the rear of the car would be the best tire out there and would sell like no end just a question I've had for a while from one of what I consider the best tire makers around the world I have raced for long time in meny classes there tires are amazing for life & grip & and can take a hell of a beating Goodyear is another that is not bad depending on what you are doing with it BFG's are a amazing tire as well anyway thanks for the video I liked it very much

Toyo drifts the best I find but I usually go with yokohama or falken cus they're on sale a lot where I am, and they usually have a higher speed rating.

@@tiny180 Ya, its always good to have others notes to compare with, especially when it comes to tires, BFG, goodyear, and michellin aren't too bad for drifting either though, just a bit too grippy for my liking therefore they wear out too quick.
Im not big into official race events but I do alot of drifting, and downhill style stuff, and being that im in BC we do have good roads, but you gotta have the perfect all round tires here, anything from -20c in the rocky mountains to 40c in the okanagan valley.
I'm using Falken Azenis FK510 atm but sometimes i'll just use racing slicks in the summer, one of my tires popped once doing that though so you gotta be careful....
