  • Our story picks up when Fox's Fantastic Four (or "Fant4stick") was about to be released to theaters. An allegedly troubled director; a studio trying to hold on to an important property; fans tired of being jerked around; all mired in scandalous accusations and rumors that border on legendary. Reality was about to drop hard.

    The whole production of the Fantastic Four movie reboot is just an absolute disaster!!! It's just sad and unfortunate to see all this happen, but at the same time, it's just fascinating hearing all of these problems. I've never really heard anything like this on a movie production before, at least on the level that the Fant4stic reboot went through.

    Josh Trank is the modern-day Elaine May.
    Both started out in something other than directing - Trank in editing, May as part of a comedy team with Mike Nichols.
    Both gained creative control and financial success from their first project onwards.
    Both tried to do films that their styles wouldn't properly convey - May's low-key Cassavetes-style acerbic comedy doesn't translate as well as it should to Ishtar, a film whose entire third act is one big action set-piece; Trank's fly-on-the-wall cinema verite-style psychological thrillers more or less clashed with the outright outlandish intent of Marvel's First Family, including scenes that explain psychological motivations for the Thing's *goddamned catch phrase* and the whole body horror element of the film.
    Both were given so much power that, by most accounts, they went mad - Trank's on-set abuse of Kate Mara, trashing his rental home, and his slander towards Matthew Vaughn for trying to salvage the production; May bulldozing some sand dunes because "they didn't look right."
    Both also had power taken away from the start - Fox kept writing and rewriting Trank, Slater and Kinberg's script to accommodate new developments and reshoots; May was forced to shoot Ishtar overseas because Coca-Cola wanted to make use of some tax credits in Africa, even though she planned on shooting it for much cheaper in the deserts of California - which may have caused them to go on their hissy fits.
    Both have become pariahs in the industry - May's reverted to acting; Trank's projects were cancelled and/or delayed after Fan4stic tanked.

    Why do they do this..? It's not fooling anyone. Even if the reason for it is NOT a lack of confidence in the movie, that is how everyone will take it. Even in those instances where the movie is actually good, people are inclined to ignore it after it's been apparently hidden from them up to release.

    Wow! Thanks for the video update, Midnight's Edge!
    Fox's marketing campaigns had been weird. The first trailer had that Chris Nolan/Interstellar feel. Then the second trailer made it look like the movie was made by Marvel Studios. I complained about this before. I asked what's this movie trying to be like exactly?
    The many interview segments you showed are indeed eye openers! It's shocking to see that these stars really didn't have any confidence in their product. And maybe they are embarrassed by it and yet they have no choice but to market it anyway. I feel sorry for them.

    You know, I didn't find the full script, but I did read a summary of Trank's original script. While I can say it was definitely going to be a different movie, it would most likely have been an "Amazing Spider-Man 2" style disaster.
    The movie had (count them) three supervillains: Dr. Doom, Mole Man and Galactus. It was going to have more action, for sure, but it was just a mess coctail of scenes rather than a film (just like ASM2). And it was going to end in a cliffhanger. So no, I don't believe for a moment that "it would have gotten great reviews".

      +pytko3 Some indie directors have done quite well with super-franchises. James Gunn made low-budget films like _Super_ before going on to directing the surprise hit of 2014, _Guardians of the Galaxy._ And Sam Raimi was basically into blood-and-gore horror films before he went on to greatness with the original Spider-Man trilogy.

    • @BenCulture

      +Amber Gray (WunPrincess) I rarely blame actors for bad movies. People usually blame either actors or directors, until finally someone says, "Wait, those dickholes can't do ANYTHING without a _script."_
      Having said that . . . Kate Mara is among the oddest-looking women in the world. She looks more like an alien facsimile of a human being, not an actual human being. To put it squarely in FF terms, she looks like a Skrull. If that's not insulting to Skrulls.

    Fox knew before the films release it was going to be a flop. They knew it was in trouble before filming started and the only reason they let Trank continue for so long was because they didn't want to risk losing the film rights to Fantastic 4. Despite the fact that Disney know own Fox and the Fantastic 4 rights. Miles Tellar also got into fights with Trank on set, this has been confirmed by a number of people. The problem is a lot of studios see a financial success on films that where done on a small budget and believe that the directors can have even more success with big financial films. Some Directors are better with the smaller budget films because they find it easier, but find it hard with the bigger budget films. Their are 3 directors I can name who have had this problem.
    1. Josh Trank of course. Chronicle was done on a $12 million budget. From what I heard Trank struggled with this and Fox gave him a budget of $110 for Fantastic 4. He was bound to Struggle.
    2. Kevin Smith. Don't get me wrong I'me a huge fan of Smiths, but when you look at his films. His best films have been film done on low budgets and most of his worst films have had bigger budgets. 2 films that show this are Gigi and Copout.
    3. Gareth Edwards. He has directed 3 successful films. Monsters, Godzilla and Rogue one a Star Wars story. Monsters was done on a low budget of just $500,000. I know Godzilla and Rogue one were done on bigger budgets. But what some people don't know was the studio had to bring in another director on both films to complete them as they weren't happy with the film Edwards delivered. Like Tony Gilroy was in charge of the re shoots on Rogue One.

    Personally, I think Fant4stic should have received 27-40% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is truly one of the most overhated comic book/superhero movies. Additionally, I recommend reading the fresh reviews. They are quite interesting. My guess is that production really took its toll on the actors. Firing Trank sounds easy on paper, but there is DGA penalty and the PR nightmare that would cause. I believe that Trank actually did have a vision. The rights never reverted to Marvel. Flop or not, the film guaranteed Fox and extension. Sure, there's the merger, but that has to get government regulatory approval. On another note, Legion creator Noah Hawley is working on a Doctor Doom movie. I have faith in him.

    Speculation Question... Because of all the clear negligence on FOXs part along the process..by both the studio and its employees... Does Marvel have a leg to stand on to challenge the current contract? It would seem like such a scarring of the franchise would constitute a violation of the current agreement...

    • @BenCulture

      +Steelbreeze420 Studios can be sued for making bad movies?!? AWESOME. Count me in on that shit! Let's class-action-suit the _fuck_ out of FOX, every one of us who sat through Fant4stic. We should be compensated for:
      1. Our ticket purchases
      2. Our two hours, tied to our average wage/salary
      . . . but on a retroactively DAILY basis since the project was first announced. In other words, let's say we all paid $10 a ticket, and earn $10 an hour (which is low, but stay with me here). We would receive $30 PER DAY from the day _Fan4stic_ was announced, up until opening day. With however-many millions joining in on the suit, none of us would get rich, but it would be quite enough punishment for FOX.

      Ben Culture no not for bad movies, they would all be out of business. But i like your idea of making fox pay..lol....But they have a contract with marvel that requires a certain effort and level of work and professionalism. This movie did not met that bar at all.. Marvel could/should argue the movie was so bad it damaged the franchise and the rights contract terminated.

      +Steelbreeze420 Can't be in the contract otherwise we wouldn't have the Roger Corman movie which clearly had 0 effort put into it.

      Super Saiyan Videl rofl..thats a really good point.lol. But that was not with Fox but with a different studio...since this post i have found out there are not typically quality standard built into these contracts..but a guy can dream right?

    • @supersaiyangoddess4293
      @supersaiyangoddess4293 8 років тому +1

      Steelbreeze420 Quality can be subjective so that would be kinda hard to threaten legal action over something like that. However their are things that if Fox did Marvel could take legal action over. For example if Fox pretty much made their own movie that is nothing like the source material but kept the name Fantastic Four to keep the license. Or crossing Fantastic Four with another franchise without their consent. Or using the Fantastic Four to promote merchandise(even if it ain't Fantastic Four merchandise still not ok). Though i think movie sponsorships like burger adverts are cool.

    Just to be a conspiracy theorist-...has anyone thought that maybe Disney and marvel went on a smear campaign against this movie and it’s makers simply over the rights for these characters? As in,they wanted them to crash and burn so bad that they would practically beg them to buy the rights? I’m not saying that Trank most likely isn’t a bit of a douche bag. I’m simply saying that maybe they went out of their way to make sure they got the worst out of him and this movie through back door deal means. I don’t know and all this is just random speculation,but I wouldn’t put it past Disney considering the more we find out about them. Let’s not forget these are the same people that ruined Star Wars,are now taking the still hugely successful MCU into a garbage political direction,were called out by Stan Lee’s own daughter for being scum,AND denied a request from a father to put Spiderman on his deceased child’s grave in memory of him.

    I feel like if Fox had let Trank make the movie he wanted to make and not interfered, it would have turned out a lot better. I mean, Trank's vision looked like a bleak, body horror-themed movie with no Fantastic Four joy included, and that's what the movie became in its final version, yes. Although if Trank were allowed to make the bleak, joyless Fantastic Four movie he always wanted to make, it definitely wouldn't have been what the fans would want from Fantastic Four, but it may have coincidentally turned out to be good. Probably not to traditional comic book fans, but there would definitely be people out there who would enjoy a darker, more horrific and cerebral take on superhero films, which are typically bright and shiny and full of hope. (DC's recent films try to do something like this and fail) It would have been (and still kind of is, but in a much lesser way) an alternative to the comic book movie which at this point has become cliche and homogeneous.
    What we end up with when Fox interferes is a movie that's been neutered of its full purpose, and all that's left behind is a bleak and terrible facsimile of the Fantastic Four concept. Trank's movie would have been at least appealing to some people, but since it was tampered with so much, even those people who normally would have enjoyed it because of what it was would probably end up disliking it due to the attempted shift in tone and story brought on by the reshoots and re-editing of the script and film. Fox ended up stuck with a fundamentally different superhero movie that would alienate normal moviegoers but interest certain cult viewers, which isn't what they wanted. Which makes me just wonder, why didn't they just get rid of Trank's team and just start from scratch? Perhaps they felt like they had to use Trank after they spent too much time dillydallying on the project and no longer had any option. So yeah. I'm blaming this mostly on Fox. I probably wouldn't have liked Trank's movie had it been fully realized, but at least SOMEONE would have really loved it. As it is, nobody fuckin' liked that movie.

    • @SirBlackReeds
      @SirBlackReeds 6 років тому

      The first paragraph is a good conclusion, but you really lose points with that "neutered" bit. That last sentence, it's a stain on your post as it is objectively wrong. Contrary to popular belief, there are fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes; the movie has its defenders. Heck, someone on reddit made a mini-review and ultimately gave it a 6-7 out of 10. Also, there are a few different explanations: Fox didn't realize what they had until it was too late (either Trank lied or the pitch wasn't too out there) because then there's DGA pentalties and a PR nightmare, or Fox was fine with Trank's vision until the internet went ablaze from the toxic reactions to every detail about Fant4stic.

    You know...I can't help but feel sorry for the actors who starred in this clusterfuck of a movie. I mean they're going to have a hard time recovering their acting careers after this movie. If it hasn't already ended it for them that is. ^_^;;;
    I remember reading this one internet movie article that quoted "A great movie can make an actor's career and propel them onto a whole new level of stardom. On the other hand, a horrible, steaming pile of a movie can do exactly the opposite. Sure, almost every actor has at least one clunker on their resume, but sometimes a movie is so lackluster that it does nothing less than kick a star off the A-list."

    Now that Kevin Feige no longer deals with Ike Perlmutter, Fox could conceivably go to Ike and ask for a FF/X-Men crossover, and he'll say yes, leaving Kevin Feige out of it completely, making Marvel Studios wait longer to get the rights back.

    The more I think about this, the more I think that Josh Trank was a victim in all of this. Say what you will, the guy might be a dickhead, but Fox once again micromanaged everything and didn't let Trank do anything really. That probably caused his breakdown. Since he was normally a low budget director, it's not as if he could have left.
    Who knows, maybe we would have liked Trank's actual vison...but we will never see it.
