  • The redesigned Chevy Trax has shortcomings, but at the end of the day, it's a cool and decently affordable new car. And sometimes that's all people want.

    I've had my Trax just over 3 months and 5,000 miles. Average fuel use is 30 mpg, mixed driving. I was able to get 36 on a 300 mile to Cape Cod and got 38 on Labor Day weekend on Long Island. So the economy isn't terrible. The value of the Trax is undeniable. Where for $26k would you get the tech, space and comfort, not to mention the Trax is a fun little car. This is the perfect car for a budget.

    It’s funny (to me anyway) when I was younger I bought the most expensive vehicle that I could afford. Now that I’m nearly 70 and could afford something more expensive, I look for something that will get the job done for minimal cost. I think that this is one that would do the job.

    In my opinion, this vehicle is still WAAAY too "premium" to be an entry level vehicle. When you've got people commenting and wondering why it doesn't have ALL the latest tech, it leaves me wondering does everyone think people who are in the market to buy a new car make at least 100 grand a year?

    In the first 300 miles of mixed driving, my Trax averaged 36 mpg. On rural roads around 40-50 mph, it averaged 43 mpg over a 50 mile distance (the car offers a choice of 3 distances over which to measure the max mpg average). Just steady highway driving at 65 mph, it got about 37 mph. I was surprised the MPG was significantly better than the EPA estimate. Calculations based on miles driven and gas fills confirmed these averages reported by the car computer. Obviously, YMMV. The car comes with 3 years of phone app connectivity that allows remote start and locking/unlocking at distances greater than the fob can reach, car status monitoring, etc. This is the mid-level, not the highest level with Onstar and wifi hotspot. The highest level is offered as a 3 month trial. I don't mind the lack of split zones or rear vents. The air temp and humidity will just blend anyway after a short while - it's not like there are physical space dividers in the cabin.

    Did anyone else notice the two driver side wheels and tires are backwards. This might have been a quality control issue on the manufacturing side. Just watch when he does the walk around you will see that the wheel spokes are going in different directions and the tire treads are too.

    It's a sad day for first time car buyers when a $25k car is considered "budget". It wasn't that long ago the bottom end of the new car market was just under $20k, those days seem to be long gone. Having said that, the Trax/Envision seem like good starter cars, but I do worry about GM's track record with small displacement turbo engines. Keep in mind the Chevy Cruze got reviews anywhere from glowing to not bad...then a few years later it became apparent the 1.4 turbo was garbage. Hopefully they learned a few things from that, but only time will tell.

      YES YES YES! It was only a couple of years ago that you could buy a base, Chevy Spark for under 15k. I've got a 2013 spark that I paid 10k new. How the heck have Chevy's "entry level" cars gone up FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS in only 10 years.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 8 місяців тому +1

      @@Trance88 If you think about it, the entry-level little hatchback cars are disappearing. Spark is no more. Versa Note is gone. No more Mirage next year. And so on and so on. Supposedly, those buyers prefer more expensive entry-level CUVs such as the Trax, Kicks, Venue, etc. People are just taking on more debt. It's not smart.

    I have wondered over the last few years... why does chevy make the trax, trailblazer, blazer, equinox, traverse, tahoe and suburban? Seven different options with 3-5 trims each. I feel like you kill your R&D budget making so many different models vs just doing say 3 crossover based ones and 2 truck based ones and doing say a base model, an appearance model, a luxury model, a more sporty/offroad version and possibly a more efficient option(hybrid) like what cost more, making 7 different structures for each model or having the general same model but changing the features. Like for example, subaru. They more or less focus on their 4 models crosstrek, forester, outback and ascent(they all have different objectives) and they sell a ton of them for such a small company. Crosstrek is the most sold compact crossover and it does not even have a real good efficient option.

    • @Aroncare
      @Aroncare 8 місяців тому

      GM give me the filling of a headless body, they are not consistent with their models, first they come up with a new thing on and then they kill it then bring back models 10 years from the grave 5 years on the market and then to the grave again. In the other hand japs do hone they models and they customers.

  • @ganthc
    @ganthc 5 місяців тому

    I liked your review, but disagree about the CVT. The engine drone is unbearable. I’m glad Chevy still offers non-CVTs. However, they should just use their 9 speed, since that one was great. The no cupholder/arm rest in the back was an interesting budget cut. I bet the later years will add it back in. When reviewers post terrible mpg compared to the listed one, I typically figure they have a heavy foot on the pedal, or live in the mountains. I’ve owned two Chevys since 2013 (Sonic and Cruze Diesel) and both exceeded the numbers with non aggressive driving.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, and my FWD Nissan Rogue that is larger gets 33mpg easily as well. Remember to compare apples to apples though, this class of vehicle uses cheap engines and cheap transmissions, and that means they sacrifice efficiency for a lower MSRP. My sister's Outback cost her over $40K, and this competes more with vehicles like the CX30 base engine, Kia Soul, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Venue, Nissan Kicks, etc and none are any more efficient on the highway really.

      Not really, the 1981 VW Dasher wagon was rated 47mpg highway. Again, its not difficult, compare this vehicle to other 2024 model subcompact SUVs. If you do, its on par. It might mean that subcompacts aren't for you, and compacts or wagons are more your style, and that's perfectly valid. @@Hallowsaw

    Not just "often times", its made clear in the industry that if you give TOO negative of a review they simply won't ask you out to the next event, as manufacturers only want good press. UA-cam ad revenue is hugely dependent on being the "first to the trough", so if you give a negative review, don't get invited to launch events, and have to wait until the vehicle actually shows up on dealership lots your ad revenue is massively impacted. That matters way more than being wined and dined. This is why all the mainstream journalists are actually controlled by the manufacturer, and the only exception is if they can give a somewhat tiny bit negative review because they already have such a critical mass of subscribers that the manufacturer figures that missing out on that audience isn't in their favor, but its still their call.

  • @BoopSnoot
    @BoopSnoot 9 місяців тому +5

    I think the activ trim is the better way to go, the engine is so underpowered that the oversized wheels/tires just end up making the vehicle feel slower and the less sidewall make the ride harsher. Personally, I would wait for next year or mid-cycle refresh when they likely put the 1.3 from the trailblazer in this vehicle. And the reason why it looks like there is a place for rear vents, its because they actually make the part. In China, the Trax is MUCH better equipped with a better engine, better screens, and has rear vents and a rear armrest.

      We don't know for sure, Nissan replaced the 2.5 four cylinder with the 1.5T three cylinder only one year after the release of the brand new model. Ford offered new trims for the Maverick a year after release. The 1.2T and 1.3T are virtually identical engines, the 1.3T is basically just a "hot rodded" version with some upgraded components, meaning it mates up identically to the chassis/transmission. So it very well could be available in a new trim or perhaps a mid-cycle refresh as its so easy to add. @@crow_2k11beatsbydre8

Totally kills the great things about my cute little car! The drive in the Trax, is addicting! The engineers nailed it! If you achieve that sweet spot, you can beat the 32 mpg sticker! Use the computer for maintenance, to promote longevity and reliability, and mpg ! I call it The Game! That 162 ft torque vs 121 doesn't hurt! And 137 hp vs 133, added for good measure.
