2014 - 2019 Nissan Rogue Transfer Case and Differential Fluid Change
I'm not a certified Nissan mechanic. This video is for your entertainment only.
Here are what you need.
3/8" ratchet
10mm hex bit socket
14mm wrench
2 Quarts Gear Oil GL-5 80W-90. Nissan recommended conventional oil (non-synthetic oil)
2 Differential washer (Nissan Part# 11026-4N200)
2 Transfer case washer (Nissan Part# 11026-1CAOA) or generic 14mm aluminum washers
A bucket
Transfer Case: 26 ft/lbs (Transfer Case Drain Plug)
26 ft/lbs (Transfer Case Fill Plug)
Enjoy. Please subscribe, click like and the bell. Thank you.
I'm liking the marine lubricant pump. I recognize that thing from the hundreds of gear oil changes I've done on boats over the years
I wasn't sure if I should bust out the glow sticks and start dancing or changed the diff and transfer case oil. Good video!
My 2019 AWD took only one quart to do both front and rear. 10mm hex on all four plugs. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video and info. Exactly as shown
One thing I do is when I am done pumping the oil quickly stick the tube in an empty container because it is going to run out of there soon. You won't lose a lot, just the stuff in the tube but it is a little bit thick and that can make it a little bit hard to clean it up.
great how to video. Do you use the same fluid for both transfer case and differential? would this apply to all Nissan vehicles regardless of year or model? Thanks
The plug on my rear diff was an SAE 3/8, not a 10MM. The 10MM was VERY loose. The 3/8 fit perfect. And when I changed the transfer case I hadn't watched any videos and have a TON of oil on the exhaust. It smells great when driving. hahaha...I cleaned up as much as I could but I'll be making many short drives to try to get that off before parking in the driveway again. Changing the CVT fluid was so stinking easy I think I'll be doing that quite often. I bought the car 48k miles ago and this was the first change for me. Not sure when anybody else changed it but it was DIRTY!
That's odd. Usually, Japanese cars use metric size only and should fit better. Good to know.
Yeah, the oil on exhaust makes strong smells. It will be gone after a while. It happened on my daughter Homda Accord. So, I know hot it smells 😀
Thanks for sharing
Good video to learn how to do it your self. We were told that you have to take it to dealer due to a lock on the transmission cap. But as you showed that is not true.
Thanks. No, it doesn't have a lock on the transmission cap.
I changed the front on my 2017 Rogue Sport SV and it may be a different transfer case or just things laid out a little bit different. I was expecting it to be the same but it seems a little different. I am pleased that I did not have to cover the exhaust pipe on mine since the drain was not anywhere close to the exhaust. I have heard that in Japan my vehicle is known as the Qashqai. Also no, I did not drain any CVT fluid, it was a really small amount of oil much like what came out of yours. It also filled up really quick when pumping it in that front differential. Really the hardest part of the whole thing was just getting the plastic shield off the bottom of the vehicle. Of course the rear one was a lot simpler yet since all you really have to do is get under there with a pan to drain it into. Just remember on both of them to loosen the fill plug first so you are not stuck with empty differentials. If that does happen, get it towed to a shop it will be cheaper than the parts and labor to replace them!!
How often do you have to do this? How many miles?
I don't understand, what does unplugging the fill plug first or last have to do with mistakes? Either way this is done during the drain phase no? Thanks in advance.
@@jw7268 If you take the drain plug out first and can't get the fill plug out, you won't be able to fill it back up, so that's why you take the fill plug out first.
which socket for the fill plug of transfer case? 3/8 ratchet? it is hex socket ,metric or sae? could you take a picture for the ratchet?
This is a fantastic video... without the techno music. Very educational and informative, just get rid of the cheesy music.
Thanks for the advice
There are so many videos with some sort of awful music. It isn't so bad when the volume is low but I would rather see and hear what is going on.
@@charleshines8523 thank God for the volume button on the computer...
Thanks for the video!!! Is this video good for Nissan Rogue 2020 SV AWD? Do you know what the service interval is?
I think it should be good for 2020, but I haven't had a chance to check it. Gear oil normally around 20k-30k, max 50k or 2 years which ever came first.
So far I did my rear one and it already feels a little bit different. Like it is a little bit smoother. I will eventually do the front one. Does the vehicle need to be level or can I put it on ramps? I would plan to leave it on the ramps over night so the exhaust will be cool. Really if it was up a bit higher it feels like you could almost crawl under and do it but I am not sure I want to be under there squeezing a bottle pump. I used Liqui Moly 80w90 GL5 with no limited slip in it. I made sure I would not need it and then made sure the oil didn't have it. I know that the limited slip is sold as an additive too but I don't need it.
Good to hear. I'm small, so I can do it without ramps. I believe using ramps will be okay and easier for you.
good video bro, do you recomend that oil brand for nissan rogue?
Yes, but if your car still having warranty, better to stick with OEM fluids.
For the rear differancial. Are you loosening the bolts by turning them clockwise and for tightening turning the bolts counter-clockwise? Backwards thread or is the camera showing a mirrored image.
Good eyee, Bro. Im using my phone front camera, so it was showing the opposite direction. Sorry for the confusion
This is the comment I was looking for
Can you clarify? Is it reverse threaded or not? Which way to tighten and loosen in terms of clockwise or counterclockwise?
99.99% of time it’s usually lefty loosey, righty tighty.
@@greg7038 it is not reverse threaded.
Do you fill up to fill port till it stops dripping completely or slow drip is good?
I was slow drip. Should be okay.
This seems filmed in reverse or submitted in reverse, because he is turning the bolts to tighten in order to loosen?????
Yes, I was using my phone front camera and forgot to edit it
I notice with these nissan rogues, nissan doesn't fill them up too much.. Anytime i do a rogue that was never flushed its always less fluid amount compared to the new fluid amount.
Its always 2.5x more going in than came out.
@@higherregion yes, it is always less than the new fluid, but I'm not sute, 2.5x less is normal. I notice just a bit less.
Did you have your car on the ramps when filling up your transfer case. If so, will this cause any problems with the vehicle not being leveled cause the transfer case to be overfull or not full enough?
No, thanks God, Im skinny enough to access under the car 🙂
Thank you! So the differential fill and drain plugs both have a washer and the transfer case fill and drain have a washer, what is the 14mm aluminum washer for that you mentioned in the description? Thanks!
You are welcome. My bad. I bought 14mm aluminum washer before I bought oem washer. If you can't find oem trans case plug washers, you can use generic 14mm aluminum one from auto shop
@@NorCalOutdoor thanks! I tried today but the box end of my socket wrench wouldn’t fit in the transfer case bolt . I was using 3/8”. So I need to buy a 10mm hex socket.
@@thechileacademy4800 you're welcome. Yes, for differential needs 10mm hex bit
@@NorCalOutdoor do you know much much fluid you pumped int the differential? Currrently dong it now and man is it uncomfortable using a squeeze bottle and not a pump.
@@thechileacademy4800 Not much, I don't remember exacly, but I think it is less than 1/2 qrt. I filled it until it started to drip.
when you were unscrewing the differential bolts, it seems like you are doing it clockwise instead of counter-clockwise? is your camera inverted?
You are correct. I used a front phone camera and forgot to edit it. Sorry for the confusion
I have tried to do it on my rogue but I can’t find the bolts.. I’m assuming it’s only done on AWD. I believe my car is FWD… any clue ?
Yes, transfer case/differential is for providing power to the rear wheels on the AWD models. FWD you don't have to do this.
I have 2019 model with 15k. I drive less but with frequent stops and shorter commutes. What is the recommended in terms of years for transmission fluid change? Also do we need to flush or just change
You have a lonnnnggg time. Usually around 100,000 miles you change the diff and transfer case oil.
@@bad1971nova Thank you. But what I heard is to change transmission fluid for every 2 years or 30k for Nissan vehicles considering their transmission issues. So checking..
@@venkataramg5480 The diff and transfer case is a tad different from the transmission. I believe they use thicker fluid if I am not mistaken. And honestly I guess you can it's not really gonna hurt anything. I would personally wait till around 50- 60,000 miles. 100,000 is just like a general use case. It depends if you do city driving I would change it more often.
Any thoughts on letting valvoline do it for me?
Yes, Im sure they can do it just fine.
Tech said my front Diff is bad. Do they mean the transfer case for the front? Or are there differentials in front and rear as well as a transfer case?
how often do you need to do this? im at 90K on my 2008 (OG owner) and have not done this, have not had any issues so far but assume I should do it now?
Every 30k. Some peoplle do it every 60k. Better to do it if you haven't never done that before.
@@NorCalOutdoor thank you!
@@12bitizthewaytogo92 You're welcome
Is this the same process for a 2017 Nissan Qashqai?
I think it should be the same
Does an additive need to be added to differential? The dealer told me it does??
The additive will help, but I believe it is not required. I have never added an additive on any of oil/fluid changes.
@@NorCalOutdoor I looked on Mitchell pro demand and there’s no mention of it. So I don’t think you need it either.
Hi, Do I need to change Nissan 2019 FWD Transfer fluid & differential gear oil?
I would change it.
Thanks 👍
@@TheGlenNA29 You're welcome
How many quarts for diff and trans case??
It was a bit less than 1 quart each. So you will need about 2 quarts
did u do this when engine hit or cold?
Cold. Only tranny fluid on warm/hot.
is this awd or fwd rogue?
Awd. I thought only sport model was fwd
does it matter if the car isn't level?
Very good question. I just want to make sure I put the correct amount of fluids inside so it will lubricate all parts and will not break any seals when it is hot and the fluids expanded. Just for peace of my mind. I think a bit less or a bit more won't hurt anything.
#Important-Tip: You always want to open Fill plug first so 1) you know vehicle is leveled in a way you will fill exact amount that comes out, 2) not stuck in a situation where you drained the fluid and fill plug isnt opening 😎✌️
Thanks so much for the tips 👍, but I have never opened the fill plug when changing oil or fluid so far. My reason is to get slow oil/fluid flows when I drained it. Easy to control if the fluid/oil got spilled.
He is just saying you want to ALWAYS open the fill plug first to make sure you can put new oil back in. You can crack the fill plug and tighten it back hand tight if you want to.
But if you drain the oil and then go to put new oil back in but you strip the fill plug or can’t get it off then you are screwed and can’t put new fluid back in
How much torque for these bolts?
I saw on Nissan forum online it says 26 ft/lbs
@@NorCalOutdoor Thanks!
@@zhumango4728 You're welcome
What kind of pump i that?
If you google "gear oil pump", you will find it
I can’t get the rear diff plugs out helpppp
Tap it with your palm counter clockwise few times. The nut has manufactur liquid thread locker, like loctite. Once it breaks, it will turn easily. Good luck
@@NorCalOutdoor I ended up like propping my self between the tires and stood up using the tires while laying on the ground. Much fun! Thanks for the video it was exactly what I was looking for. Also I enjoy your accent
@@YUFlysofast 😊. Thank you.
