      Well yes that is true for season one, seasons three and four were done by Cloverway so the whole cousins thing and making FishEye female was their doing.

      I found it funny that they tried to hide Neptune and Uranus' relationship by calling them cousins. They still showed them being incredibly touchy feely, so the cousins thing just made it kinda awkward.

    fun fact: in japan, sailor moon wasn't seen as a 'girl's show' so much as a 'children's show', with the viewerbase being split pretty evenly between boys and girls. and it was seen as a kid's show much the same way that the original teen titans was, with the target demographic being little kids through high schoolers.

      @@laralizardbreath3248 I meant because of the viewership. Being Sailor Moon was seen as a girls show but it got male viewership too. I think it's because of the
      relatable characters and good storyline that kept everyone watching it. Same with My Little Pony Friendship is Magic it's seen as a girls show but it also has male audience. I personally got into My Little Pony Friendship is Magic because of the good relatable characters and good storyline and good comedy in it. Also I got into it because most of the original writing staff worked on The Powerpuff Girls and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends two of the best Cartoon Network shows ever and Lauren Faust the creator of the show is the wife of the creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends so that made it even more good because they have an actual person who has a history of good cartoons. Sure My Little Pony Friendship is Magic isn't for everyone it's just like all cartoons it's no different but even you can't deny the fact that this version of the franchise when compared to the last two generations that had a cartoon is good.

      Media with teenagers as the primary protagonists are generally not targeted at or designed for teenagers themselves; but instead pre teens and children. The reason being is that it gives the kids something to aspire to. The 11 year old will see the 16 year old protagonist as a role model and excite them about the near future and what is comming next in life. This obviously isn't an absolute, especially in our current culture but It was certainly true for a lot of media produced in the 80's and 90's.
      You can see it in other franchises too. Both Gundam wing and Power rangers also employed this strategy. I remember watching Gundam Wing as a 10 year old boy thinking the teenage Gundam pilots were mature and deep. Now that I'm almost a 30 year old man the Gundam pilots often come across as the opposite: Angsty and Naive. That's just how life goes.

      On my part, my first crush was Sailor Venus. Criminally mishandled protagonist. The anime made her a butterfly-minded goofball who never gets her proverbs right. She's likeable as she's, but it absolutely doesn't make justice to her tragic side, as her destiny is to sacrifice love for duty...

    I love Sailor Moon. It's melodramatic and particularly cheesy at times, but there's a little something that set it apart from the other magical girls. Thanks to its wonderful art direction, there's a powerful feminine mystic emanating from the series. The heroines are fairly stereotypical. It's the parallel display with the villains that give them relief. Indeed, in my perspective, SM is as much as a series about sentimental education as an all-female sentai. You know, in most romance animes, you often see the idealized vision of relationship. Love exists, isn't there or is just a crush. Rarely the unrequited love alternative gets explored in-depth. SM, on the other hand, isn't afraid to show the baddies abusing their hopeless love interests. That makes it all the more satisfying when the wrongdoers get punished or find redemption.

    You make a great point that regardless of how censored or altered the show was initially, it got people familiar with the series. Much like the original airings of Dragonball Z or 4Kids Yugioh.
    I'm thankful for even having an opportunity to see it as a kid. But its even better that VizMedia has recently re-dubbed the series and given us a more accurate version. :)

      but like you said, we (in my case me and my little sister) grew up with it. so all i can do is cringe and tell myself "just as you remembered, andy... just as you remembered." thank god for the re-dub.

      I watched the spanish version of DBZ on the one espaniol cable channel, and my father was huge into anime. I was familiar with it before the american companies did a hatchet job to them. In the infancy of the internet, I used to order fan translated subs of shows. I still have my fansubs of Sailor Stars in a box in my garage, in those neat little blue video cassettes they recorded them on.

      I also thankfully didn't have to grow up with the shitty english dubs. My country did fantastic dubbing jobs on almost all the classic anime without having to censor them much. Well, at least until the time Naruto aired. when that came out, they suddenly only hired cheap voice actors and butchered everything in a way that would put 4Kids to shame. It was the death of anime in my country... but the 80's,90's and early 2000's were fantastic. And after that you had the internet anyways to watch everything subbed.

      In my case, I'd say it depends more on the context. High School DxD, for example, has very few episodes actually about school. It tends to get shoved to the side when you've got demons, angels, Norse gods, and so on slugging it out on a regular basis.
      But a show that was literally ordinary teenagers in high school, focused solely on the teen angst from bullies and of course the completely misinformed teen concepts of relationships and love, I probably probably would not be able to sit through.
      I'll stick with the show where Odin dares an entire to attack him with: "Whomsoever can take my head will become a legend!" And then he wipes out several hundred guys with one swing of his spear.

      Same with Swedish version shown in Finland. I was in high school but watched the series as a curiosity (and came to love it). I'd seen Ginga (the anime about dogs fighting bears) as a kid years earlier, but I was still shocked how Sailor Moon Classic killed off the protagonists - for a moment, but nevertheless.
      Zoisite was a woman even in the Swedish version, though.

    • @Davesknd
      @Davesknd 7 років тому +8

      Same in the German version, though, funny story: Zoisite is so flamboyant and deliberately feminine that the German translation team literally confused him for a woman when they heard the original dub (not kidding).
      And his last wish to die in Kunzite's arms, surrounded by beauty hit hard. You don't often get moments like that for villains.

    _"It's okay if you don't like Serena that way just don't string her along like this."_
    Okay there is this part in the Sailor Moon R _Season_ where Darien is getting these premonition dreams that if he stays with Serena something bad will happen so he breaks up with her for like.... more than 10 eps, and doesn't even give her a [good] REASON as to why, and if I remember correctly she had at least 2 nervous breakdowns about it. I remember one was in a crowded street where she was begging him to tell her what she did wrong and promising to change into a better person if he would just tell her _what she did to lose his love_ and he doesn't even fess up about the dreams until she admits to having them too. He's also failing at staying the hell out of her life during this period. Eventually they go to the future (30th century) and meet Future Darien who's all "Oh yeah those dreams? That was me. I was testing your love."
    I didn't hate Darien in the first series but my god the minute *this* happened as a kid I lost all love for this guy. He was a douche as a teen, and he's gonna be a douche 1000 years from now. And I was only 8 yrs old.
    I just wanted to share that story from my childhood. It's something I cite as to why I like stories about Villains/Heroes. Because as creepy as Prince Dimande was, to my little baby brain at least he wasn't pushing Serena away. IN FACT HE WAS KIDNAPPING HER! Welcome to the polar opposite side of the world :D

    • @KichiMiangra
      @KichiMiangra 7 років тому +8

      I did hear that Darien got better after that (Or just didn't get enough of a chance to dun goof again) but the problem for me was that _I hated Darien after that moment_ and it just didn't go away because _I missed the later Seasons of sailor moon!_ Sailor Moon ended for me after R. I don't remember why but I know it wasn't voluntarily deciding to stop watching.
      I think after R there was a gap of time where either Sailormoon wasn't airing or started the series over again. I hadn't known that there was anything after SMRs conclusion until a while later seeing the episode where Haruka and Michiru die to get their heart jewel sword mirror things. I was confused and after having missed so many eps (And streaming wasn't a thing yet) I just didn't watch Sailormoon anymore, so Darien never got the _chance_ to redeem himself for me ^^
      Luckily Darien wasn't like that in the manga, but then again I didn't read the Manga until I was in college, and that's a lot of time to be disliking the character XD

    It should also be said that if it wasn't for DIC's english dub of 'Sailor Moon', we would've ended up with Saban's 'Americanized' version with live actors, and Akom level animation. (Look it up sometime. You'll laugh at the addition of a wheel chair bound Sailor Scout. You're welcome.) That being said, It's kinda ironic that these American companies who we tend to throw under the bus for 'butchering' these shows to be palatable for the US market, should at least be given some credit for bringing them to the US market in the first place. Even some of the butchered versions of classic Disney shorts that aired on The Disney Channel was how a lot of of got to see them in the first place.

    A-MEN! To everyone who complains about the DIC dub, Sailor Moon wouldn't be anywhere near as popular is it is now if DIC hadn't adapted it in the first place. I thought you put it very well. Amusing review, thanks.

    • @whilan
      @whilan 6 років тому +3

      While that is true, we do have to be fair and understand that while it introduced people to it, there were flaws and this version wasn't the best it could possibly be, in fact it could be argued that it wasn't nearly as good as some other dubs. DiC did bring it over and we have to thank them for that. However they could have done a much better job than they did with it and still get it over here.
      We can discuss both the good and the bad. Sadly so many reviews don't touch on this front and take the DiC dub at face value as if that's how Sailor Moon really is and that nothing was altered from the original. Least he mentioned it in this review if not touched on specifically, but Bennett isn't really a fan and that would probably take far more work than he want to do to make that happen.
      Those "complaining" about the DiC dub are dissatisfied with how DiC chose to do the dubbing, granted some things like removing relationships because America wasn't as accepting as it was now are understandable if albeit somewhat shameful that had to be done in the first place. Other cuts made no sense like taking out Sailor V's backstory. There was no reason for this cut, other things like spoiling the main plot in the first episode were also unnecessary. So both sides have a point, Yes DiC did what it could to bring it over here, but there's stuff they did that wasn't needed to bring it over here and made the story-line confusing or revealed things too soon that caused any amount of intrigue the show might have had to be lost.

    I love Sailor Moon so much. It's not perfect but I found it super empowering both as a tiny black girl and as a queer adult. The dic dub is terrible on many levels but some parts are just so bad it's good. They could sailor telaport in the show too. The anime was super repetitive since it has to catch up with the manga, thus this movie exists and used a character from the filler arcs.

    First saw this movie twenty-two years ago on a 3rd generation fansub in art school. Ended up with a bloody tear in my eye at the climax because I still knew at that age how profoundly, and intensely, loneliness and ostracization could affect some people, and how important "that one friend" who saw the positive in you could be.
    I appreciate not everyone is going to have that reaction, so the honesty in the opening line in the video is appreciated. This still holds a special place for me as being one of the first bits of subtitled anime I'd ever seen. And yes, I don't care how opposed you are to reading your movie dialogue, MAKE AN EXCEPTION for this one. It's really one of those instances when YES, you can tell the one in the foreign language was better.

I said last week this was the show that really made me get into anime. That is true. Its anime in a way that change my life. Maybe never found more anime and gave up on it. Never go to anime conventions and meet people online and irl become what I consider friends. Some I have seen sadly pass away in recent years. Might never have found channel awesome or gain interest in twitch. I know it sounds weird but all ties together because one day I caught the last syndicate episode of sailor moon and wanted to know more. My interest in anime grew from and eventually went to conventions that lead to so much. Why show even after all these years still has a place in my heart.

    I'm gonna' be honest. Being a fan of the original Sailor Moon, I was ready to skip this episode. Why bother with an episode that focuses on the bizarre and awful English dub, reviewed by someone who doesn't even like the show? But that said.. the opening was an excellent argument. Yes, I routinely spit on the notorious US version of the show, but I would not deny it's importance; it led me to seek out fansub bootlegs of the show, which began my history as a rare film hunter, a first step towards who I am today. In fact, the Sailor Moon R movie was the first fansubbed anime I ever watched, from a supplier who I later purchased the series proper from (we didn't get CN here until three years after Toonami ended, so I didn't even know the movie aired there!).
    So, yeah. I don't know if you ever read the comments, but the opening speech really meant a lot to me. It put a nice perspective on things, so... thank you.

    Couldn't agree more about scholastic settings being a huge turn off when it comes to anime; I've never cared for the setting for similar reasons, and just generally feels boring. Unfortunately, it's probably the one element in new anime series that I see the most, which contributes to the shows having the second biggest turnoff for me, which is formulaic genre fare hoping to emulate the success of previous series. Then you have the formulaic "dark school uniform/relatively more realistic (these days) hair styles/ridiculous looking weapon that screams the artist is trying too hard to convince you the weapon is badass" bland, cookie cutter character designs that make these shows visually unappealing as well.
    And speaking of modern anime tropes, if I see one more creepy high school protag with a loli-as-fuck little sister that wants him to fuck her and screams "Onee-chaaaaaan!" every five seconds, God as my witness I will cut a bitch. Seriously, if sailor moon was made today, Tuxedo Mask and Mini Moon would have a fairly explicit romance subplot and it would get the most screen time out of anything else in the show.

      The reason it's used so much it two fold. 1: the target audience, even when intended for older audience is still school aged children. So setting it in school instantly gives the audience something to relate to.
      The second is that it's just so easy to do. Setting it in school means that you instantly have a way characters know each other, a place for them to talk and discuss events at a set time, everyone is on the same time schedule, the characters don't have to worry about jobs, rent, or money. And you have a plethera of standard school tropes to pull from for filler.

      Sailor Sedna I'm not sure on that. I think you can still imply pretty much anything in anime as much as you want but graphic (like with nudity) depictions could finally be illegal.
      Either way, like you said, modern anime has some issues. It all feels like bland, homogenized stuff trying to fit into fads I don't personally care for. It seems like no one wants to do anything unique or explore genres outside the three most popular ones with slavishly derivative, regurgitated art styles, animation direction, character designs/archtypes, settings, plot structures, and even down to the editing, scoring, and voice acting casting/direction. It's all shit I've seen done before a thousand times, and none of it has ever really appealed to me.

    Time for your lesson Bennett, first of all, YES Geneon/Pioneer released the uncut versions of the movies on DVD. The edited versions used DiC's music cues, and not the original Japanese score, those were aired on Toonami, in fact on the R movie disc, there is an extra with the final scene where 'Moon Revenge' was replaced with DiC's 'Power of Love'. Toei did like to include elements of the TV series, in their TV series based movies. This is why R's main villain; Fiorie, resembled Ali and Ann from the TV series. The same thing happens in the S and SuperS movies. Also DiC was not responsible for Sailor Stars not being dubbed. The S and SuperS were still dubbed in Canada, but production went to Cloverway, an American subsidiary of Toei at the time. Sailor Stars couldn't be dubbed because the Sailor Starlights would come out as either masculine lesbians or transvestites, both were against FCC regulations for children's programming. So it's their fault that Sailor Stars wasn't dubbed. Sure they could have released it uncut on DVD only like ADV Films did with the first two seasons, but what can you do?

    Going to see the viz dub of this at the theatre was a riot.
    Sailor Moon R: The Movie is probably the one most affected by the weak points of the anime series, especially the reuse of character designs and putting Darien/Mamoru in danger to up the drama. Personally, I prefer the second movie, Sailor Moon S: Hearts in Ice; it was an adaptation of a side story from the manga, and focuses more on Luna, giving her more character development (for once), and while it has a weak villain, there are some striking visuals, and I would recommend it for a holiday season review.

    Sage repeatedly asked how bad Rini's future is... It honestly is kind of bad. (Perhaps more so in the manga.) She was supposed to be the bright hope for the future, but something went wrong. She's 900 years old, but never aged past around 9 years old either physically or seemingly emotionally. She's a misfit and she's lonely. Her mother is a bit of a failure, and seemingly isn't around much (made worse by dubious parenting choices). Her only friends are her magic balloon (Luna-P) and an immortal door guard that isn't allowed to leave her post (Sailor Pluto). Chibi Usa willingly became a villain at one point, and worked as part of a plot to destroy the world.

  • @00Boogie
    @00Boogie 7 років тому +10

    Dumb question: How many times has Sailor Moon died and the deus ex machina'ed back to life by a character giving up their life force? I feel like this has happened more than once.
    Also, could they really not think of something besides a ridiculous self-sacrifice to get rid the last new character from the movie? I get not wanting people going back to the show as it continues to wonder if characters introduced in one-off non-canonical films will show up, but killing them off is the lazy way out.
    Couldn't the guy have just had a moment of sober thinking then jet off to deep space to plant flowers wherever he can, in the hopes one day some kids have a special moment of their own? That way as the show goes off what was already adapted from the manga and kids wonder about character X they can be reminded, "Oh, he's planting flowers somewhere far far away."
    This is a good example of why I hate movies based on long running manga and are still drawing from the source material, characters go nowhere and stay there, or they contrive utter bullshit to avoid conflicting with the show. Take that one Inuyasha movie where they decided it was better for Kagome to be a bitch by wanting to lord the collar over Inuyasha rather than diverge from the source material and episodes in production to have a new development in their dynamic as demonstrated by the collar coming off.

    • @00Boogie

      That would be nice, except that more often than not the anime is a painstaking recreation of the manga. The movies generally are just a condensed filler arc for all that they contribute to the story. Granted, there was that one DBZ movie with that one badguy who later appeared in the television show and the heroes had to stop him without Goku to save the day. Pretty sure that was a filler arc, but it was the rare example which had an interesting premise and being self contained didn't feel like a total ripoff.
      If anime adaptations want to deviate from the source material and include cinematic offshoots, fine. I simply would hope that they would commit to doing enough of their own thing instead of trying to have with both ways with a faithful adaptation on television, then releasing movies which piggyback off the show don't even get an acknowledgement in later seasons of the show.

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII 3 роки тому

      @@00Boogie Sailor Moon the TV series wasn't a particularly faithful adaptation of the manga, either. It wasn't just the absurd amount of filler added, the anime also cut some story sections, rewrote some other sections, and changed multiple characters to varying degrees. In the final arc, Chibi Chibi's entire identity was changed.

    You, sir, are reviewing the S.M. version in the Plastic box that was done by Pioneer and the Buena Vista division of Disney including the intros for other shows like that anime movie "Catnapped" and "The Dog of Flanders", and Pokemon, and maybe "Belle 's Sing Me a story", when the 3 different movies were released when S.M. switched over to "TOONAMI". BUT....PREVIOUSLY, in the Local Syndication era. Plus when she was on the U.S.A TV NETWORK. THE 100% ORIGINAL Japanese films were released on V.H.S. CASSETTE TAPES IN CARDSTOCK BOXES WITH BEAUTIFUL GRAPHICS AND ENCASED IN SHRINK WRAP PLASTIC. AND THE 3 FILMS ARE IN THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE LANGUAGE and INCLUDES ENGLISH SUBTITLES THAT ARE PERMANENTLY ON THE TV SCREEN. YET THEREFORE THOSE ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE "CLOSED CAPTIONED" (C.C.) SYSTEM FOR THE DEAF SO THAT THIS SYSTEM CAN BE SWITCHED ON AND OFF. And the sound is only in monaural and the same sound comes through a single speaker. Plus+ the Plastic box has True Stereo Sound in Dolby Surround Sound with Stereo effects moving across the screen from left to right for normal events. But right to left to indicate Danger!!!!! That is a regular trick of the cinema trope. The Finale of the end battle in the cardstock box version has the fighting song of " MOON REVENGE" sung by all the main female cast members that ends with the thrilling conclusion. But the plastic box has the DIC ENGLISH song 🎵, "THE POWER of Love ❤ ", sung by Ms. Jennifer Cihi, but the English and Canadian female cast members are speaking during their cameos or adding their grunts and groans during the fight scenes. But Sadly it seems that this was the time in the Late 1990s when DIC and Pioneer and Buena Vista were on purpose trying to downgrade S.M. with these really bad scripts that are filled to the brim with the worst cliches, with the afore mentioned line by the Flower 🌼 🌸 "Petal to the metal?????". And several edits to cut back on up-skirt shots in the English copy. And including Darien getting stabbed in the back by the long finger nails 💅 🙃 😅 🙄 of Fiore!! (WOW!!!! THAT EMOJI OF FINGERS JUST POPPED UP AT THIS EXACT MOMENT!!!!!). However even though those companies tried to stop S.M. she just became more popular than ever before. Thus now in 2022A.D it is her 30th Anniversary. And CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 👏 💐 🥳 🙌 💖 🎊 TO EVERYBODY WHO MADE SAILOR MOON 🌙 THE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS, AND UNIVERSAL PHENOMENON!!!!! TH. 4.11.22.A.D.!!!!!

    at least with DBZ's Cooler and Freiza, the two are both siblings and members of the same alien species, so it makes sense they'd look pretty similar. With Uke-chan and his main-canon lookalike, the two are unrelated and don't just share VERY similar designs, but also the same concept; guy controlled by flower lady.

    Thank you Sage, for acknowledging the impact that the DiC dub had for the American anime scene.
    As shitty as it was (yes, I acknowledge that), I've seen too many people have such blind hatred toward the dub that they end up acting like revisionists and down play (or completely deny) it's importance.
    Which does a great diservice to anime historians and future generations looking back at this era of anime.

    For those curious how long this transformation sequence/attack animations is lets do some math, 57 minutes 24 seconds comes to 3,444 seconds. Next we take the 7.4% and make it into a decimal point for easy math, which comes to .074 (moving the decimal places over to the left twice). next we take 3,444 and times it by the .074 gives us 254.856 seconds. This is the total time in seconds the transformation and attack animations take up. Returning this back to minutes by dividing this by 60 for easy understanding brings us to nearly 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

    I do thank you for making it obvious that you were referring to the Dic/Cloverway or in this case the Pioneer dub (Which quality wise is pretty similar). You do make an awesome point about the whole if DiC hadn't changed it so much to get it on then we probably wouldn't be talking about it today. So Plus 1 to you for that one.
    As for the review as a whole...This was really spot on. It's Campy at points and there's no way in denying that they reused a character model for the main villain.
    I, and this seems to be very rare with me, have no actual complaints. So...good Job Sage, you did very well here.

    Wait, I thought the Sailor Moon characters are 14 in this season and are actually in middle school at this particular season. Now that I've think about it, in the world today where anime high schooler saving the world daily is the norm, a show that features middle schooler saving the world is actually pretty unique (though they eventually became high schoolers too).

    COINCIDENCE!
    Also: It's more of a case of Japan's kid audience can handle more mature themes- the show was targeted towards young girls. It was in a shoujo magazine.

    You'd think it would've been obvious. Now, while the meanings of flowers is widely debated (for some reason) and no one truly agrees on anything, I just went and poured through several lists of flowers because I had the time to waste, and Forget-Me-Nots, surprise surprise, weren't on ANY OF THEM. If anything, I'd think the meaning of a freaking Forget-Me-Not would be pretty damn obvious

    Guess what made me a Sailor Moon was when third season was airing on Toonami. I saw plot episodes in a spotty manner but what I saw made my young mind go, "Wow, this is cool."
    No surprise since S was the season that really got bold in certain ways. Haruka and Michiru were willing to go as far as let the victims of the day die if their Heart Crystals were what they were looking for, flying in the face of Usagi's group who weren't willing to let anybody die.
    With the previous seasons, there was the basic "good guys vs. bad guys" thing but here, there was a third party who wasn't evil but were willing to make more hard choices.
    But it's not for everybody and I respect Sage's opinion when it comes to the more... "fluffy" stuff. Word to the wise, though. Watch the new dub by Viz if you consider it again.

    I just wanted a funny Sailor Moon review tonight at random while I did some photo editing-- and I got it- Thank you! Thank you for adding toonami original audio in... takes me back.. (I'm 1987, from the original 'Japanimation' crowd). I'm at the My chemical romance part and this is hilarious, I'm LOLing... I taped every episode off tv so this roast is so funny! You made it funnier than if I just put it in the vcr.

    I'll be honest. I loved Sailor Moon when I was a kid, it and a lot of anime at the time were the only highlights in my life, and I find the amount of butchering it went through kind of funny. However the new version is admittedly better because of the major make over it did to everything.
    Nowadays the older version is cringy, but I still love it :)
