      I still think they could've still tried to make the filler eps more engaging like how the live-action version explored different dynamics, issues, and themes like the ep where Ami was struggling to be friends with Usagi or when Usagi and Mamoru stole jewels back from thieves which progressed their romance a bit. Minako being the false moon princess could've easily been its own mini arc.

      That is true. Though they could of explored more on every other important character besides Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibiusa. I mean they had 5 seasons and 200 episodes to do it.

      EXACTLY! Sailor Moon honestly would've been trash without the "filler" episodes. I can't even regard them as filler because people stupidly associate filler with "bad" when that not even the case. The anime was built that way. Nothing was reall filler aside from the Doom Tree arc in the first half of Sailor Moon R. Every episode provided me with a enjoyment and intrigue either for characters or characte relationships. Without it, you would've had that shallow mess Sailor Moon Crystal which has zero redeeming qualities.

    don’t know how popular this opinion is, but i don’t mind filler in sailor moon. the manga (and therefore crystal) feels really fast paced. and while arguably the 90’s anime’s pace feels like a drag, it makes me feel like the girls are gradually learning and slowly becoming stronger, making their progress feel more believable and earned as opposed to a sort of “hand out.”

    90s Sailor Moon is something more unique then simply Nostalgia. It represents a Great era of hand-drawn craftsmanship with a beautiful bright colors. Its amazing and surprising how much quality went into a weekly series like this in Japan during its original Broadcasting. To this day, there are very few shows and projects that can last up to its legendary Legacy; full of wondrous illustrations with such amazing effects and artistry. Truly the 90s was a fantastic era for animation, as Sailor Moon had to stand up to the likes of G Gundam, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    Regarding the season 1 finale, it always hit home for me that Usagi is a kid. If I was thirteen and had friends that would die for me, I would be broken if they did that. Then the reset button was pressed on her and her friends, but she did grow and change. When her friends died again in Stars, she matured enough to face Galaxia...and purify her instead of killing her. She had every right to kill Galaxia, but decided instead to get rid of Chaos.

    • @TimothyCHenderson
      @TimothyCHenderson 3 роки тому +45

      Agreed, they also played up Usagi's compassion and loving nature in the anime as well. If anything, the style of the 90s anime endeared itself to a kinder character. The manga, while beautiful, always came across aloof and crystalline, even for Usagi. And yes, I also think that Usagi did show growth across the series.

      oh, man... I JUST showed all 200 episodes of Sailor Moon (Viz dub) to my guy friends... they NEVER expected any, let alone ALL the girls, to die... One of them still thinks that season 1 finale was the best because it literally subverts all expectations... like yea, there were dramatic scenes in future episodes and seasons, but after knowing it was fair game that the girls COULD die, he already kind of expected it

    • @Crooked_Mantis
      @Crooked_Mantis 2 місяці тому

      Right. I don't think the anime is making Usagi cry in the Season 1 finale to try and tell us she's weak. I don't think it's trying to frame her as in the wrong for feeling the pain so potently.
      Usagi continuing to cry inconsolably while her friends push on and encourage her to keep moving doesn't show that her friends are emotionally stronger. It just shows that they have successfully closed off or redirected their pain. Usagi, however cannot put any of her sorrow aside. Her compassion can never translate into vengeance. Her love cannot be dampened. And she feels responsible for every step of this awful tragedy. She could've cried for 20 more minutes and I still would get it. It makes sense to me, and makes the moment feel painfully real.
      And the end, her final wish, to essentially undo everything except the banishment of evil and give herself and her friends normal lives again... it is not for a meta reason, that is just Usagi's genuine wish, even as the writers know it will be undone when a new evil arrives next week. It's sending home the message that Usagi would not wish this life on her friends and would selflessly remove these wonderful people that she loves from her life if it meant letting them live peacefully. This is also why she doesn't go out of her way to fill them in when she gets her memories back.

      Usagi doesn’t get rid of Chaos. Even in the manga she realizes its a part of the universe and something she can’t just erase from existence. The fourth arc literally points this out when Queen Nehelenia comes to Princess Serenity’s christening and is forced out by Queen Serenity. The moon itself has a dark shadow as well, the new moon. Usagi’s solution to defeating Chaos is simply shattering it into basically a huge jigsaw puzzle with pieces so tiny it will be impossible to reassemble it ever again

      Yes. That is why I love the filler too, it gave us more insight into the girl's characters, as well as sometimes the villains and even in rare cases the side characters. Good series try to develop all their characters, which is difficult if you basically speeding through the whole story like it sometimes feels the manga and crystal does with how fast characters are introduced and then killed. Granted too much filler can be bad, but some filler is needed to better develop the characters, the world, and so on if there isn't enough time or focus on certain parts of the main series. Heck, in some cases a fan's favorite arc is a filler arc because it either gave us a cool new concept never seen in the manga yet or it let other less important characters take the staring role for once and save the day.

    • @sailorcat
      @sailorcat 3 роки тому +5

      True, but the fillers are way too many for me. I also think some of them are very boring (for Sailor Moon standards).

    • @KichiMiangra
      @KichiMiangra 3 роки тому +4

      @@sailorcat I can agree. If I hadn't watched the 90's anime growing up I don't think I would even do so as an adult for the first time because I would be super put off by the 200 episode length of the series, and even if I gave it a shot I think I would get even more turned off by just how much filler there actually is. I could see myself at best getting to the end of the first series if I reeeaaaaallly wanted to and then going "Okay that's done. That's my closure. It's over. There aren't like 150 more episodes. Dark kingdom only." Which is sad because R is my favorite series.
      On the flip side though if I hadn't grown up with the 90's anime I could also see myself giving Crystal a try and being really turned off by it's fast pacing. Like... I chose to watch Crystal in that way where I try to pretend it's 100% new to me (Not easy I know. I can't erase this franchise from my mind) and found myself really really not caring about the sailor scouts because there was really no time for them in Usagi's narrative. Sure it's not called "Sailor moon and her four friends of equal importance" but like... "Oh no they diiiiied.... they gave up their life force or somethiiiiiiiiing.... oh no.......... I... don't care about you four..."
      If I was allowed to pick and choose, I'd want each series to be 26 episodes with a 1:1 Filler:Plot ratio. Enough time to get to know the characters outside of their relationship to Usagi being the moon princess, not so much that it's causing long droughts of plot progression.

    I found some scanlations of the Sailor Moon manga that have 4-panel excerpts from Takeuchi at the end of the early volumes, stating how she very much was overworked and stressed out while working on the original run and apparently super pissed off the anime went thru with killing off the main characters when was originally her idea but her editor said no.

    • @AnimaMandala
      @AnimaMandala 3 роки тому +57

    • @ReyHaruka
      @ReyHaruka 3 роки тому +24

      It is true that Takeuchi was rushed by her editor and Toei. She had a lot of work to do in a short amount of time, but that's pretty normal in the manga's industry.
      Plus, I have read her other works, and if you don't believe my words(and I really wish you don't and follow my advice) go and read by yourself. She never created a story with some sort of "depth" or "less rushed". So what was her excuse with them?
      She also said in many interviews that she just wanted to make a story about " Pretty girls "(never talking about their other traits) that would be pretty much ended with the first arc of Sailor Moon. Now, go and read again only the first arc, and tell me that was a great job. With 5 girls (that we barely start to know) and every character that is there only for support or being the enemy of Usagi. There is nothing more than this.
      Not to mention that Naoko wanted to do a lot of things (like making Ami a fucking cyborg...) That fortunately her editor persuaded her to do. Because it was a huge mess of ideas that she was just throwing in thinking "that could be cool... ".
      Naoko Takeuchi did her job. But she was more of a concept artist than an author. That's too a part of why she was struggling so much during that time.

      @@ReyHaruka She was working on Sailor Moon and Codename: Sailor V at the same time and she had to rush the Sailor Moon manga because of the anime. So I don't know what point you're trying to make here

    • @ReyHaruka
      @ReyHaruka 23 дні тому

      @@raincandy1653 I think I explained in details my point, so there is no need to repeat anything I've already said. Code name Sailor V was only 3 tankobon in 6 years (the first year she was working only on CnSV and each tankobon included 5 chapter average, 6-4-5 to be precise,which is what normally you do in a year as a publishing mangaka). To make a comparison: Sailor Moon was 18 tankobon in 5 years, which is the average publishing pacing of many works, but considering that PGSM was THE THING at that time, it was just average.
      "I was a bit of a rare case in that I wasn’t [submitting manga] out of a desire to become a manga artist, but rather that I was drawing manga to escape the stress of studying for university entrance exams." (Her words)
      Now, I studied and worked in the comic's industry, so if I'm saying that Takeuchi sensei was a GREAT concept artist, believe it. If you don't, read all her works and tell me they are not always rushed, without depth and just about "pretty".
      There is nothing wrong in how she approached her stories. She has all the rights to draw and show whatever she liked to draw about. (Not to mention she was also really young and immature as an artist when she worked on PGSM) But this doesn't means her work was that good, it was just the right product at the right time, because other people helped her to make it possible. The real work was done by her editors and assistants and the people who worked at the anime and pushed the right buttons: because the little kids watched the anime, didn't read the manga. They (the anime's team) worked on a perfect producing pace AND did a really good job at the same time, making Sailor Moon a valid product with amazing bonds, depth and life advices for both targets, kids and adults. Pressure didn't lowered quality: TOEI guide lines did. (For both, the manga and the anime)
      Now, what I'm saying is not that she didn't do her best. My point is she wasn't fit for being the mangaka (again, mangaka implies all the struggle that being a mangaka means. She repeatedly said she wasn't the right person for that job) behind a successful series, because she didn't had enough material to work on and on (HER WORDS, not mine), she was always tired (again, still not a problem per sé, but a problem in the industry she wanted to work in), and every other work of hers didn't get a spotlight. All this because she was a great concept artist (and again, this is just a fact, nothing more).
      Does this mean that she did a bad job? No. She did what she could do best. But my point is: this was all she could do. Pressure or no pressure, she was that sort of author that has a lot of messy ideas, that need a lot of guidance to create something that works, and that if you listen, read and watch any interview she ever had, you'll hear all I am saying here said by her herself. She liked the idea of drawing pretty girls, with pretty outfits inspired by magazines and to draw jewelry. PRETTY is her most used word, and when you analyze her works, "pretty" is where the main focus is.
      When she worked on "fixing" some problems with her old pages of PGSM for the Deluxe Edition, she never touched her story, lines or pacing: she focused on redrawing the images she founded ugly.
      She could had improved, explored, re-tell a lot of the chapters she wasn't happy with if she wanted (nowadays she can thanks to her Copyrights), but she didn't. Even with all this years to think about it and draw slowly whatever she wanted.
      If all of this doesn't explain my point... I don't know what else could.
      And again, it's a pretty, rushed, manga to be read enjoying the beautiful pages and stunning draws, but not that deep explored or well executed on a narration point of view. That's all

  • @VanAkita
    @VanAkita 3 роки тому +157

    Just to point something out, Naoko wasn't on her own for her manga works. Every manga artist comes with a group of assistants gathered through the years to help them draw and assemble the pages (there were open call ads on the side of the manga's original print asking for assistant applications). They go uncredited most times.
    The most of work she had to do was supervising and roughly drawing 2 stories instead of 1, since providing the source material for the anime adaption came with one of them.

    While it's nice that Crystal was a more accurate version of the original manga,it didn't do much to fix the the inherent issues that version had,like the focus on the development of Usagi and Mamoru to the detriment of the other inner senshi.I also definitely felt that the manga's plot was constantly on fast forward and none of the interesting plot elements brought up in each arc have any time to breath and develop. And yeah,even though it was hit or miss(mostly the later),I do like that the 90's anime tried to give each main villain more screentime and develop their motivations and character more than just being another obstacle for the senshi to fight.
    So i think that while a 200+ episode count is overkill and leads to many fillers being pointless,if you reduced it down to 50+ episodes (for for a singular show that covers all the arcs) that would be just the right amount to keep the pacing tight,while developing Usagi and the inners as characters,developing the main romance,and flesh out the plot and worldbuilding some Of course,26 eps for each arc could work too which is what the Crystal series rolls with,but I feel like they aren't using that format properly .
    It's a missed opportunity that the creators of Crystal didn't look at the areas that the 90's anime and especially the manga could've improved on and worked to improve on it by simply expanding on it and making anime original material that respects the spirit of the manga. Hell,maybe they could've asked Naoko to come up with anime original material(such as fillers) like what CLAMP did with Madhouse in the first CCS anime.
    To me,the best adaptations are not the ones that are just shot to shot remakes,they are ones that are that and strive to improve upon the original source material flaws when they can.They are adaptations that add something new that fits the spirit of the original work.
    Also,it would be neat to see a video from you on the PGSM live action show,because that version has a different take on,yet not bad the Dark Moon Kingdom Arc and it also does interesting things with the characters.

There are several parts where there are weird bits of continuity -- for example, I always remember Prince Diamond disappearing for a few pages, and then, as if saying "oh, right!!", they just give him like a single panel where he's killed off, lol. The anime villains were better, and no one can convince me otherwise.

    I'll be honest. The real reason I like the 90s anime over Crystal is because I like the art style 1000 times better. Naoko Takeuchi / Crystal's style looks kinda ugly to me. While I think the others have the better storylines, part of what makes watching an anime enjoyable is the art/animation. I think the 90s nails that far better. That, and they gave the girls slightly more personality even if it was superficial. I kinda thought the girls were too similar in the manga.

    Sorry, but I absolutely disagree that the 90's anime doesn't show how the girls used to be "outcasts", and how Usagi brought them all together. On several ocassions this is mentioned (the ones I can think of right off the bat are the scene at the end of the Doom Tree arc, where the girls run in to save Usagi, and also when Chibi-Usa turns into Black Lady, and again, the girls talk about how much Usagi means to them. In the movie The Promise of the Rose (which, okay, not part of the original anime series, but still in the same "canon"), that topic is addressed explicitly. I also disagree that we don't see character growth in the filler episodes... in fact, there is MUCH more character growth in the anime than in the manga, where Usagi pretty much jumps from being a crybaby to being a ~Magical Princess~. We get to see more of Naru, who is dropped like a hot potato in the manga, and we actually see a gradual development in how willing Usagi is to fight.
    I also very much enjoy how the villains -- Neherenia, Nephrite, The Amazon Trio, the Negamoon Sisters -- are all shown empathy and compassion, giving them the chance to find redemption. In the manga, it's just BAM, DEAD. And the villains have more depth to them, rather than just being offed in a couple episodes! Zoicite and Kunzite's relationship is anime exclusive. The relationship between Michiru and Haruka, too, was further developed in the anime (in the manga they just had a strong friendship of sorts). And Sailor Galaxia was simply the absolute best. That whole last season, in fact, was a work of art.
    While I do agree the manga did some things better (for example, Idg why they couldn't really include the bit about the Amazoness Quartet being Chibi-Usa's future companions. Also Mamoru's relationship with Usagi had its... low points in the anime); the anime did a lot of things REALLY well -- or even better than its original counterpart.
    TL;DR: I will defend the original anime TO THE DEATH.

      Honestly, Manga lovers have this absurd obsession with just shitting on the 90's anime because of it's filler and how things are changed and change is bad. Yes, some Manga scenarios and points were good and should have been included, but the manga had no breaks. due to the lack of "monster of the week" in the manga, the BIG bads became MotW. Whereas in the anime, the big bads were generals and summoned minions, and between that they developed these villains (except the amazon quartet, fuck those guys i guess). The 4 sisters in the Rubeus arc got SO much redemption and became legitimate characters that Sailor Moon took compassion for and gave them that human life they desired. In the Manga, the girls just straight up murder them and move on.
      The Anime humanises these villains that got swayed into evil, making Sailor Moon and the girls MUCH MORE COMPASSIONATE when it came to their demises. They hesitated to kill their big bad, because they were sentient and mortal who had been corrupted by the evil energies of the universe.
      The manga, all the big bads are just murdered. They don't even get a chance to explain why they are bad, what their goals and desires are (other than the 4 generals). It's just "ew gross, you are evil by. Mars fire ignite"
      Nehelenia's final arc is quite possibly the BEST arc in the anime, but a complete and utter mess in the manga. I hate reading the circus arc in the manga because it's just straight up shit.
      Whereas the first part of the STARS in the anime is amazing and shows how powerful some characters are, Ie Saturn.
      The faith the guardians have in the Princess of the moon is shown so well with Saturn who has spent the least time with Usagi. Saturn pours her energy into that attack with FULL faith that Usagi can do anything and save everyone if Saturn just takes Nehelinia out. This moment, would have been Saturns greatest moment if ChibUsa hadn't intervened.
      I can't see the manga versions being the same, because outside of maybe one or two joke panels in the manga, the Outer girls don't have that connection with Usagi, especially Saturn.

      When I was young I didn‘t realize this. And we don‘t really see much about how they were before they met. But we get more about it from the anime than from the manga.

      That's... oddly the first time I've heard that question pop up in regards to SMC!
      usually when a reboot pops up (Which is usually here in the west) one of the arguments I tend to see used most to fight any complaints of said reboot is that "This one isn't for YOU old people, it's for current KIDS right now!" But despite all the defenses I saw for Crystal when it first came out I don't think I saw that defense at all. In fact the defenses seemed to point more towards not an age group, but that SMC was specifically made for fans of the Manga and to be a true adaptation of the manga...
      I don't remember exactly but I think I had heard claims that with the intention of being true to the manga it was meant to be the more mature anime adaptation of Sailor Moon which insinuates a more mature target audience rather than a young child audience? If that helps answer your question?

We know Beryl was a researcher sent to arctic and awakened Metalia but who was she before that? Did she have a family? Friends? Is there some kids out there who think their mom died in the arctic expedition? Unpopular opinion: As much as I love the original 90s anime, though, I can't say that the fillers didn't have flaws. Although many people cite it as the "OG feminist" anime, there are a few questionable scenes/episodes in the filler episodes (DISCLAIMER: this comment isn't in favor of Crystal/the manga, it's just to point out a few flaws - all renditions of Sailor Moon have them).
    Some examples: 1) the episodes where they pit Mako and Minako vs each other [eps 65, 154]
    2) the scenes where the senshi always imply that Usagi is at fault when her and Mamoru are having problems (e.g. the episode with Koan, Rei and Usagi in R [ep 70]; most of the breakup arc in R - none of them thought about asking Mamoru why he's breaking up with her out of the blue?)
    3) the entire "joke" in Stars where, despite Usagi telling Seiya "no, I'm happily taken" multiple times, Seiya continues pursuing her and the senshi encourage it
    4) continuing Chibiusa's unexplained rude attitude towards Usagi and heavy crush on Mamoru throughout SuperS (and parts of S) while the manga shows her maturing throughout the arcs
    5) them building up Usagi and the senshi's power all throughout the series only to have SuperS make them heavily dependent on Helios/Pegasus
    6) making Mamoru a college kid when he was supposed to be a high schooler....
    7) where were the outer senshi in all of SuperS?
    And these are just a few. Again, this isn't a 90s-bashing-Crystal/manga-is-the-best comment - the 90s is my favorite rendition, too, and it's true that the fillers helped us explore our girls more and they all love each other, but you can't say there weren't questionable parts in some of the storylines/filler.

The poor guy even got ended in the beginning of the final season. While he throw roses in the 90s, he fires freaking beams in Crystal and I heard he has way more broken abilities in the comics. Not even two full months had passed, which means that the anime was in production even before the manga was out with its first chapter. Even the character designer of the first anime - Kazuko Tadano - confirmed that she was on board with the project when Takeuchi was still designing the characters.
    The anime didn't get produced because the manga was a big hit. It was produced because the basic idea was considered good and it was invented as we know it by both Takeuchi and Toei. Takeuchi had the merit to invent Sailor V, but she wouldn't have expanded the concept if she hadn't been told to do so.

    In my personal opinion, the original 90s Sailor Moon show has a few really apparent flaws but at the end of the day, it is still an anime classic despite them. Namely, the show tends to over-rely on stock animation for the transformations and attacks and furthermore, the show tends to over-use the monster of the week trope, resulting in a fair bit of filler. Why then is the show still so good? Simply put, imagine the show without the magical girl transformations and the overly repeated tropes, what are you left with?
    A wholesome, character focused, slice of life show with a healthy dose of well-written comedy.
    It didn't matter that the monster sub-plots a lot of the time were uninspired, the main characters and even the background side-characters were so believable that you could easily relate to them. You could literally make a spin-off of this series that takes away all of the magical girl elements, and it would still work perfectly fine as a comedic slice of life show no problem.
    To a certain extent I think that this is where the remake, Sailor Moon Crystal, initially failed as a series. I get that they were trying to cut out the filler found in the original anime and make it more true to the original manga. In the process however, I feel that something present in the original anime and manga was lost in translation. Namely, because the remake tried too hard to be a dark and gritty narritive focused on story, the original empahsize on the characters was lost in the process. The reason the main conflicts had so much impact in the original anime and manga is that they spent a healthy amount of time building the characters, thus making the fights have much more meaning when they occured. It's kind of ironic really, the remake may have been more true to the original manga in terms of the plot, but the original anime, at least to me, felt more true to the original spirit of the manga, despite the filler because of the focus on the characters.
    For that reason, although you can pick out a few obvious flaws with hindsight, I still say that the original show holds up really well despite them to this day.

    The one thing that I am glad that you do here at the end is to acknowledge how Sailor Moon Crystal, while it follows the manga, is not a 100% faithful adaptation of the manga. Not many people do that and instead blatantly argue that Crystal is a 100% faithful adaptation of the manga where it leaves out so much in terms of characterization where there was already so very little to be had in the manga. Crystal somehow manages to water it down even more and I have a feeling that with this next movie it will water it down even further. I think one of those moments that stands out to me was in the manga when they were on the moon, revisiting their past, there was this little moment between Usagi and Makoto where Mokoto cracks a joke about Usagi being a rabbit on the moon. A lot of things like that were left out that really would have given the characters personality honestly.
    I feel like the manga does a better job at explaining mythos and character abilities and where they come from and I think the reason why the 90s doesn't do as well is because it's being written alongside the anime and Naoko wasn't even entirely sure of all of those mechanics yet.

    Personally, I always enjoyed the filler of the 90s Anime, maybe not all of it, but I liked how the filler have us more time to develop the other characters, both the Inner Guardians and even some of the villains, and in rare cases side characters like Naru. It really helps to flesh out the world and make it seem like all these people have some kind of decently important role to play.
    Also, I enjoy the Inners and Usagi dynamic more in the 90s Anime because it feels more real with how they all have different personalities thus causing some crazy interacts when those personalities clash. Like the arguing between Usagi and Rei, that is how some friends or even family act to each other they like to get on each other's nerves, but when the situation calls for it they are there for each other, and the arguing and teasing is just there way to show they care for each other, and even outside of those big situations they still have moments where they show they genuinely do care for each other despite the friction. Seeing how Usagi and Rei's friendship grows is a great part of the 90s Anime. As well as how the others grow to some degree, like for example Ami, when we first meet her she is a lot more passive, and that makes sense why her attacks are more defense-oriented, as she is the less aggressive member of the team, even after all her character growth, but the point is thanks to the filler we see how she changes and becomes more outgoing and confident and is less passive, like in that season 4 episode where she thinks Mamoru is cheating on Usagi and goes to confront him about it with great confidence(episode 138 in case you were wondering).
    I also like the Monsters of the Day, I grew up on Power Rangers so seeing that the villains have an army at their command makes them seem more like a credible threat and that they have the resources for world domination, at least too me. Not to mention it allows for us to develop the evil generals by giving them more screen time to fight our heroes, as opposed to many of the manga versions that were killed ver early on.
    However, I'll admit the Monster of the Day formula only works for the first 4 seasons, as it doesn't really fit with Galaxia in the final season Stars, which is the one version I think was better in the manga, because it just seems stupid that some who has conquered most of the galaxy doesn't know by now that only Sailor Guardians or some kind of Protector of a planet is the one with that planet true Star Seed, especially after she went through the trouble of awakening Hotaru in the anime and then personally killed Mamoru for his Star Seed at the start of the season. That was the one time the Monster of the Day formula made the villains look incompetent and worse in my opinion. It was especially bad because you would think they would at least use the concept of turning people into Monsters of the Day better by targeting some of the side characters that our heroes actually know and have relationships with so that it makes the fight with them more compelling, but instead it was always some random person that was the target. The supporting cast completely disappeared by season 5, which is also something I didn't like with the final season, granted they were being used less and less by season 3, but almost all of them still made at least one appearance per season, usually as the target of the day for the villains, but still. Another sin of the final anime season is the minimal use of the Outer Guardians, despite reintroducing them in the 6 part opening mini-arc fighting Nehallian.
    So overall I prefer the 90s Anime to the manga and Crystal, but I'll admit the 90s Anime has its flaws and there are some good things seen in the manga and Crystal that I do like, and Ii like at least one season better in the manga than the anime.
    Sorry for the long comment I'm just a big fan of Sailor Moon, and anything I'm a big fan of I can spend a long time talking about.

    After watching this and hearing of the production issues and the pressure on the creator it very much makes me feel like the manga and 90's anime are two halves of a whole story. While I do love the manga I find that the other scouts often take a back seat to Usagi's story and while I get that is her story I like how the other characters get more screen time and we learn just a bit more about them. I very much liked how we got to see more of the villains being actual characters in the anime as opposed to just target practice in the manga. While the manga definitely has the better plot it goes by so fast I had a hard time trying to connect with the other characters besides Usagi and Mamoru. The monster of the week was repetitive but each episode we do learn a little more about the characters and it makes it feel more day-to-day as opposed to everything happening at once, like finding all four guardians back to back in the manga where it feels more natural in the anime. I guess my main point is that I wish crystal had been a merger of the two instead of a re-telling of the manga as both stories contribute different elements to the story as a whole. I'm going to run out of space here in the comments but I could literally talk about this for hours to anyone willing to listen. PS: Unicorn of War I would 10000% be willing to collab a video combining the two stories to make a whole ;)

      I totally agree with all of this. While it's nice that Crystal was a more accurate version of the original manga,it didn't do much to fix the the inherent issues that version had,like the focus on the development of Usagi and Mamoru to the detriment of the other inner senshi.I also definitely felt that the manga's plot was constantly on fast forward and none of the interesting plot elements brought up in each arc had any time to breath and develop. And yeah,even though it was hit or miss(mostly the later),I do like that the 90's anime tried to give each main villain more screentime and develop their motivations and character more than just being another obstacle for the senshi to fight. So i think that while a 200+ episode seies is overkill and leads to many fillers being pointless,if you reduced it down to a regular 26 or even 50+ episodes that would be just the right amount to keep the pacing tight,while developing Usagi and the inners as characters,developing the main romance,and flesh out the plot and worldbuilding some.
      It's a missed opportunity that the creators of Crystal didn't look at the areas that the 90's anime and especially the manga could've improved on and worked to improve on it by simply expanding on it and making anime original material that respects the spirit of the manga. Hell,maybe they could've asked Naoko to come up with anime original material(such as fillers) like what CLAMP did in the first CCS anime with Madhouse.
      To me,the best adaptations are not the ones that are just shot to shot remakes,they are ones that are that and strive to improve upon the original source material flaws when they can. They are adaptations that add something new that fits the spirit of the original work.
      I really hope that Thomas notices your comment and collabs with you because that would be an interesting video. The 90's anime did have it's merits and so did themanga,so why not see which elements worked from each and combine them?

      I wish Crystal had aspects from both the 90s anime and the manga. The filler eps, imo, worked for the 90s series because we got to see more of the inner soldiers and we got to see more of their everyday lives which made them more interesting and in some ways, relatable. Maybe if Crystal had done something like that while also adapting the manga's story, it would come across as more interesting to those of us who find Crystal, unfortunately, uninteresting.
      I suppose it's like the Shining. You have those who like Kubrick's film and those who hate it because it strayed too far away from the book...like Stephen King himself. He did his own miniseries that was almost entirely faithful to the book, but some people disliked it and felt it was boring. Then there are those who like both for what they are. I've read the book and have watched both series. I love the movie and the book. I watched the miniseries when it originally aired, and was glad that it was closer to the source material...but looking back, there were just some things that just wasn't adapted well for it because it worked better in a written format. This is how I feel about Crystal.

      @@ssjup81 True that's the problem with adaptations of something . And i like said,I feel like a 50 to 60 episode count overall would be perfect for the series to develop every aspect that it needs to.(But a competent writer could probably adapt each of the series in 26.)It's not too bloated like the original 90's anime 200+(while there were fillers that were memorable in some way and developed something about the characters,most of them were forgettable.) episode count wound up being.
      And they've could've asked Naoko to contribute to the story of Crystal by asking her to expand on some of her concepts like her characters, their relationships with each other,worldbulding etc. in fillers so that the fillers aren't boring to the average viewer and don't slow down the pacing of the overarching plot because every filler you're learning something new about this world instead it being a meaningless sidestory that doesn't contribute anything to the the characters or worldbuilding.
      When they did the first CCS anime,Madhouse actually worked closely with CLAMP and the latter was allowed to have some input on the epiosdes, fillers especially and share their expanded takes on the original that added quite a bit to the world of CCS that made it feel more alive. And as someone who has actually read the manga,it feels so barebones in comparison to what the anime gave us,that I prefer the anime. That's the power of what a good adaptation of something can do for a series.
      In the 90's anime some of those fillers in the 1st season that had Mamoru act antagonistic towards Usagi could've and should've gone towards showing how there relationship changed over time,to hating each other,to being neutral,to being kind of awkward,to actually being friends,and then them slowly falling in love. Maybe that wouldn't have been for everyone,but if done right,I would've found that that far more interesting than the total whiplash of her suddenly liking him after the princess reveal.
      And while the manga version is less creepy and more wholesome,I still have problems with how fast they came to like each other and their not being much build up to the romance or why they like each other. Yes, I understand that in a relationship there needs to be differences in people to balance each other out,but Usagi and Mamoru don't share anything in common. Not hobbies,not personality, or anything else. While I can see manga Mamoru being a friend to Usagi,I just can't connect with the two in a romantic relationship. And an ideal adaptation could've taken the opportunity to expand on their relationship
      And you want to know what's frustrating about the first Crystal series? it seemed liked they had plans to expand on the generals beyond what the manga gave us,by bringing up the implication that they and the Inners were romantically involved. I don't care about the romantic stuff in of itself, but it could've been used as a a vessel to see what the generals were like before Metallia and Beryl made them into their slaves.
      Because in the manga they're killed off and while they survive somewhat by being gem ghosts(and seem to be free of the possession),we still don't get much info on what they're like as people.But they do nothing with and the generals are just killed off like the are in the manga with no fanfare.Why?

      @@ssjup81 You've pretty much nailed what I think a lot of us were HOPING Crystal would be like. I think a lot of fans of the original manga want to see the broad plot points of it faithfully adapted, with the original character personalities in tact, but stretched out the way the 90s anime was to give the non Usagi senshi more development. Every single version of Sailor Moon has struggled to shine a light on the inner senshi outside of Usagi, except PGSM*, in my opinion.
      The 90s anime everyone claims fixes that from the manga, but I would heartily disagree. In over 200 episodes, we barely get 1 episode per season devoted to each inner senshi girl to show her inner life. That's absurd to me when we spend an extraordinary amount of screen time on villains. I get that the villains are fun, but that sucks. We don't get nearly the rich characterization of the girls that people claim. They pretty much don't exist outside of Usagi, and don't get to have screen time together without her very often, and hardly ever talk about their inner lives in all those episodes. I can think of maybe 1 episode per girl over the entire 200 episodes that actually digs deep into her thoughts. When you compare that to the manga where each girl gets maybe 2 chapters or a chapter and a side story. While it is less, it's a greater share of the much shorter manga by comparison. The one manga plotline that has basically never been adapted by any version outside of maybe the Japanese stage musicals is the Dream Arc. The 90s anime does entirely its own thing with SuperS, so I'd really love for that to get a treatment. Each chapter that goes over the inner senshi's fears and weaknesses is some of my favorite stuff the manga does.
      I'm hoping one day there will be an adaptation that lives up to the promise of Sailor Moon Crystal. I'd love to see the kind of longform treatment, with tons of time with the inner senshi, and removing a lot of the really sexist trappings of their dynamic the 90s anime.
      (*The one caveat is I think Venus is still treated pretty weirdly within PGSM. PGSM Venus is a great character that I think is really interesting, but she feels the most disconnected from her manga counterpart. They overcorrected her from the 90s anime ditz and stripped out all her fun loving personality traits and only kept the manga's rigid adherence to duty.)

While I do agree that it would have been good to see more about the girls' families (we only ever see Usagi's parents; and I DO wish we could've seen more about how Lita felt about being orphaned, how Ami dealt with her mother being gone all the time, Rei's relationship with her dad, etc); I disagree with the argument of "bc sexism lol". No, it was to add conflict! It does a good job showing that, even if they are teammates, they won't neccesarily get along right away (PGSM does a great job at this, as well). And it develops their relationship into something where Rei does NOT put up with Usagi's shit, and thus always pushes her to do better, to BE better.

      teasing is a sign of affection. Rei is just a bit choleric, that’s all. Rei and Usagi have very different temperaments, so this will lead to conflict when they react spontaneous. But in this they are somehow alike. It begins as a conflict and ends als a childish fight. If they would really hate each other, each of them would turn around, go away and not talk to each other anymore forma while. Instead of this, they accept each other like they are even if it sometimes leads to conflict.
      This can also be a friendship.

      I think the interpretation of the girls relationships as catty and Mamorus treatment of Usagi as toxic might be more of a cultural misunderstanding than plain misogyny.
      I‘m not saying that there isn‘t any misogyny to be found, or that some of these ideas and behaviours aren‘t toxic, but both the affectionate fighting and sometimes harsh teasing are staples of Asian dramas. These tropes are super common in shows that are primarily about male relationships as well, so it‘s not just a case of making girls appear catty
      The idea is that people with very different characters, that do NOT get along well naturally, still learn how to tolerate and appreciate each other’s strengths and sometimes become way closer than with anybody else as a RESULT of their difficult journey together. It‘s a very collectivist idea that getting along, even when you have your differences, and putting the teams needs before your own might benefit you in the end. It clashes with an individualistic worldview.
      Also the understated/subtle/underhanded expressions of affection (in the clip she played, despite ostensibly insulting Usagi, Mamoru is still calling her effectively by a really cute PET NAME) or Tsundere behaviour are really common tropes all over Asian media as well.
      You‘re supposed to understand Rei and Usagis relationship as an affectionate rivalry, they have different temperaments, but they push each other to be their best selves and Rei is among the Senshis Usagis closest friend. They blow up at each other because they are secure in their relationship with each other, it‘s a sign of trust. Yes, their style of communication is loud and sometimes aggressive, but they ARE communicating constantily, It‘s when they STOP talking that you need to get worried.
      You‘re supposed to understand that Luna is a mom type, she’s very much deeply concerned for Usagi, even if she doesn‘t outwardly show it very often. She chastises her openly and then worries about her quietly.
      You‘re supposed to understand that Mamouru does see Usagis good heart, but wants her to do better and also thinks of her half affectionately, half exesperatedly as a little sister to begin with, before he slowly grows fonder of her. Again, it‘s supposed to be a sign of a degree comfort and familiarity in the relationship. The reason you tease someone, is because you know you wont really hurt or offend them and the reason you chastise is because you trust that they can do better and support them in that. (I think him offering to actually tutor her instead of just goading her into working harder would have been a great touch though. Also their insta-love after the reveal is a valid criticism.)
      You might not agree with any of these behaviours/tropes, or think they‘re healthy, but they are rooted deeply in the culture, so it‘s more complex than just ‚too many men worked on this‘.

    Maybe one day I'll go back to Sailor Moon Crystal. My biggest criticism of it is that it was just too boring for me. I like the manga fine...but it was too Usagi-focused. I know it's her story, but I always found the junk with Mamoru and Usagi's relationship incredibly boring and since Crystal is closer to its manga counterpart, that's included in it and just like the manga...it's boring. This is something I kinda liked for the 90s version since it focused more on Usagi's relationship with her friends, but since that aspect of the manga was boring for me (even though I read the manga after I saw the 90s anime when it was airing back then), I preferred the anime.
    Something else I prefer to Crystal in the original is the art style. I just feel that the style used in Crystal is better suited for a manga medium, but I do love their Sailor Outfits for the manga and Crystal. To me, the characters don't look very expressive. I also felt that the girls looked more their age in the original 90s version (14 - 16) compared to Crystal. This is just a personal preference, not knocking the art style, though. I also prefer the original music.
    Even though people dislike filler, I actually enjoyed it. IMO, I felt that the filler actually benefited the series because we got to see the characters' everyday lives. We got to see them act like teen girls and even saw them studying for their high-school entrance exams and when they all pass them (minus Rei who didn't have to take one), we're all happy for them, especially Usagi and Minako who are both bad students. We saw them into the trends of the day and that they had lives outside of being Sailor Guardians and that there was more to the other inners than just being Usagi's protectors and bodyguards. We learned that Ami loves sandwiches (pretty sure this was in the manga) and has trouble with receiving love letters, we learned that Rei, despite her fiery personality (I know this is anime-only, which I prefer actually because it makes her more interesting as it 's a contrast to her being a priestess) she's a big softy, we learned how Makoto is a lonely character who struggles with not being "feminine" in the sense of your average Japanese girl, despite having a gentle personality and traditional Japanese hobbies...we learned that Minako likes the idea of being an idol and how despite how confident she acts, had gone through some form of heartache. IMO, the 90s version helped to show different facets of their characters. I just wasn't getting that in Crystal which made it difficult for me to become attached to either of them like the 90s anime did. I favored Makoto and Minako (and I liked how they really seemed to utilize those lovely Libran traits for her lol).
    I'm glad that for Crystal they used the Shittenou mostly correctly. I'm glad that Mamoru is actually being utilized a bit more compared to the 90s version. His character and personality were okay, but he wasn't very useful (but I must admit to liking the Moonlight Knight...I know, anime only, but it was an interesting addition). He was the damsel in distress to me. lol I wish that they would've kept in Tuxedo Kamen's attacks. I also wish they all would've used all their attacks in the 90s version. Seeing Mars' Phoenix attack and Jupiter's Thunder Dragon attack was nice (but I forget if either of these were in the manga)...I just know they had more attacks manga wise and wish they could've been used in the anime. Hated how Saturn was gypped in the 90s anime. Hated how ChibiUsa was an ungrateful brat in the 90s anime (liked her in the manga).
    I still prefer 90s Rei to Manga Rei. I liked the conflict. It's interesting how people viewed that Usagi and Rei had a dislike for one another when I never got that impression. To me, they struck me as siblings who bicker. Only thing about Rei I did dislike was the whole Mamoru x Rei thing. In the manga, I didn't realize that Rei had mistrust of men...I just thought she refused to let herself love again *because* of her father's secretary who was forced to marry someone else. I was under the impression that the attraction between him and Rei was mutual, but for the sake of the company and business (so Japanese), he married that other woman. i kinda like that they dropped that in the 90s anime, actually.
    When her friends died, Sailor Moon was upset and she broke down, but you seemed to conveniently leave out that her friends gave her the strength to continue. The fight against controlled Endymion was really good, imo. Getting down to it....I preferred this in the 90s version too. Better than Usagi killing herself...imo.
    Edit: Hearing dub voices, outside of the DiC dub as that's all I'm used to, is a bit unsettling. I'm so used of the Japanese, all these English voices just sound....off. lol

Yeah you need to see it as soon as you can. In my opinion, PGSM Makoto IS Makoto, they nailed her character even better than the anime in my opinion! And Minako is definitely more true to her character in the manga, they did a fantastic job. What are you waiting for? Watch it!!!!!!

    I also forgot to mention that I like the anime's finale for this arc, at least on paper. Having the other Guardians slowly die protecting Usagi made the arc more dramatic and intense. Usagi was still crying, but that was completely understandable given that she kept losing her friends. Having their spirits still support Usagi even during that final battle was pretty nice. The Silver Crystal basically killing Usagi doesn't really make a lot of sense, especially knowing what it is supposed to be in the manga, but I could go with it. Even with their memories erased, the ending still felt optimistic and hopeful since Artemis and Luna said that they could just become friends again. If this was a series finale, I think it could have worked, but since it was just a season finale and they immediately undid it just a week later, it doesn't have nearly as much impact as I think it could have had.

    In comparison the 90s anime is nowhere near the strength of the manga, but it still provides a lot of strong and important themes that relate directly to the manga. Thankfully the rampant sexism and repeated up-playing of the toxic behavior between everyone was toned down as the seasons progressed (Super S and Stars are really good imo)
    That being said there are a few changes I really like, Although I dislike Rei's change to being boy-crazy as well, outside of Season 1 her relationship with Usagi with the core dynamic of constant bickering actually gets incredible development as its shown that they are actually the closest out of everyone in the group and the dynamic is incredible to see grow in R and beyond
    Season 1 has so many issues with its writing and filler but R-Stars is still fantastic and is an incredibly important piece of media especially for its time period imo

    I had watched all the seasons, and I can tell you:
    - all seasons are pretty same - the concept, the concept of villains, threats, etc.;
    - however, the style, the pace, and the esthetics are different. The most promising was season 1, season 2, season 5. Seasons 3, 4 have their own exciting moments too;
    - the introduction of new characters is impressive, especially Neptune and Uranus (among my favorite characters);
    - the twists are cool (Prince of Persia like moon Tuxedo, two arcs in season 2);
    - new seasons (remake) are not promising at all due to the animation change (I, personally, cannot stand this kind of graphics).
    There are many episodes you may skip. Some arcs and plotlines could be developed into much more exciting subplots or finales. There is a massive potential in the whole concept. However, it wasn't fulfilled, especially on Mamoru's end.
    Nevertheless, the show is not only nostalgic but interesting to watch from the beginning till the end. It is more suitable for teenagers or fans who didn't finish watching it previously.

    I’ll take the 90s anime characters over those from the manga any day. ESPECIALLY Usagi and Rei. The biggest difference between the two versions, which they both make very clear, is that while in the manga Usagi “matures” into her Queen/Goddess persona like she’s possessed at times, in the anime she retains her personality, flaws and qualities up until the end. She’s always Usagi, just like her friends are not just reincarnations of moon warriors with an hive mind, but whole different people with dreams, fears, and so on. And I love this because it makes all of them a lot more relatable and likable. The manga is very much the story of Sailor Moon and nobody else, while the anime is an ensemble of characters and relationships that feel alive during the 200 episodes. Also, I don’t know what the hell kinda version of the anime the girls from the podcast saw but holy crap.. I facepalmed so hard at the “this looks like men wrote it”. Like.. bruh.

(Something that Naoko didn’t do in the Manga). In my opinion, I like Crystal better than the 90’s. I just like the art style of S1-S2 and the story of it. Also Naoko tbh did a really good job giving each character their screen time instead of the anime of the 90’s, which they focused more on other characters than others.

  • @Naiadryade

    I just recently watched all of Crystal, then all of the 90's anime (VIZ dub). And honestly now I'm rewatching Crystal and probably will multiple times because I really love it for the story/plot, for the strength of the romance, and for the character growth afforded to Usagi. It does feel a bit rushed sometimes, but I feel like I can make up for that in my imagination just by carrying the knowledge of all the character depth given to the Inner Guardians over 200 anime episodes, over onto the characters in Crystal in my mind. It helps that all the voice actors are the same.
    A few additional thoughts I had while watching this video:
    -Flustery meetcutes of destiny FTW!
    -Usagi IS the original chaos bisexual
    -It bothered me in the 90's anime how just after they built up to Rei accepting Yuichiro's affection and getting him to not leave because she returned it... Yuichiro just kind of stopped existing and Rei was somehow still-tragically-single? Like huh?
    -I'm kind of in love with Crystal's Momoru and I hate the 90's anime writers for ruining him. This is honestly like 60% of the reason why I don't think I'll be rewatching that version.

      Yeah, I fully agree on what you said. Crystal I felt gave more development to Usagi whereas the 90's anime gave more development to the inner senshi.
      I believe the reason the anime writers didn't have Rei end up with Yuichiro might have to do with Naoko wanting her to be completely independent and this is expressed in the manga with her duties as a shrine maiden.
      I also wasn't a fan of how they did Mamoru and Usagi's relationship in the 90's anime. It's sad when Usagi had more chemistry with Seiya in 20 episodes than she did with Mamoru in 200 episodes.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but it was the DiC dub that messed perspectives of age due to cultural differences of when high school starts/ends for what age. In the Manga, their age difference is 2 years, in the Anime it’s 3 years. The DiC dub implies age by saying College, but Mamoru is a Leo, meaning his birthday is in August. This means he could actually graduate high school at 17 in both the NA and JP school terms, depending on when he started school. By saying he’s in college it implies 18+ which is not the case. I seem to remember reading an article that outlines this all pretty clearly with the cultural differences. In the end, Manga, 2 years difference, Anime, 3 years difference.
    Also, the Far East historically encompasses anything east of India, inclusive of the South Pacific, while the Middle East includes all of former Persia and the African upper continent. The Americas are both North and South. If historical migratory patterns are assumed of Silver Millennium Earth, Australia was largely unpopulated. Instead, it’s where everything venomous, poisonous and downright terrifying decided to vacation. Haha!

      Very late reply but doesn't mamoru drive a car in season 1? I thought the minimum age for a driver's license in japan was 18 so I assumed that was the youngest he could be in the anime. The change to age him up to seem more mature and different from the senshi was really a mistake 😭 so much relationship conflict from them not really being able to publicize their relationship because of the big age gap would've been avoided like in the manga, all these adult women going after mamoru and then usagi being jealous and insecure every season (minus stars) bc she can't compare and feels immature. Mamoru not telling his older college friends he has a girlfriend bc she's 15 in season 4 😔😔 usagi would've been taken seriously if the age gap was only 2 years

In the last volume, if I recall correctly since it's been forever since I've read it, all four girls have cameos in it. Usagi and Naru were at the game center. Rei was walking with a friend someplace. Forgot what Makoto was doing. I think Ami was riding on the same train as Minako at one point. This video leads to an interesting discussion of what the girls' powers are supposed to be.
    In Japanese mythology, the elements were Wind, Water, Fire, Earth, and Sky/Heaven, the last of which either designated pure energy or the spirit world. I think Usagi's powers reflect this fifth element more than anything.
    The Chinese element of Wood was associated with Wind, so Mako's powers combining plants and storms could be a reference to this, but it can also connect her to Jupiter's role in Chinese (Wood) and Roman (Wind/Storm) mythology. I like Thomas' idea of it representing her being the most feminine and masculine of the girls, though.
    I think the manga played up the idea of Minako have love-based powers, with her Rolling Heart Vibration attack. The idea of her having light-based powers seemed to be a holdover from when she was Sailor V, and her powers reflected the literal planet Venus, which is known for its brightness. She also had a Venus Sulfur Smoke attack, which reflected the planet's sulfuric atmosphere.

    As so many of said before, I feel the filler made us care and bond with the girls more. I watched Crystal, and read the manga. Both have such a breakneck pace, I just can't care about what happens to the characters. Similar to Rings of Power, which we meet a character, spend 10 minutes on screen with them, and then their throat is cut, with tragic music in the background. I couldn't care less about them, because I did not have enough time to meet them. So I feel that the filler actually made 90's Sailor Moon so much better. The season finales were impactful as HELL because of it. It hurt my soul to see them get hurt or die.
    I do agree with many of the other points you made. Especially about the toxic romance in the first season. I don't consider bullying as a sign of 'love'.

    You do need to see the live action version, it's just as campy as the 90's, but had more character development (it's been a while since I last saw it though). Then there's all them musicals....
    In the name of the Moon - go wash your hands and wear a facemask damn it!

    Third comment. Sorry, I'm commenting as I go through. Naoko Takeuchi's decision to not kill off all the main character was also influenced by her editor Osa-P, who would later go on to assist her with the manga later on. I have the feeling he managed to steer her away from many of the darker decisions she otherwise would have made.

      @@ryanwitwickifaddegon4291 that's another thing - Unicorn, I don't know if you will read this, but something didn't sit well with me about you saying Sailor Moon would have been ready to kill Beryl for eliminating the other Sailor Senshi. We see them being killed in the final arc as well, and even after being forced to fight their controlled bodies and watching Mamoru being dropped into the galaxy cauldron, she never wants to outright kill Galaxia. She even makes an attempt to save her from Chaos. Sailor Moon has never been about revenge killing. In fact, in the later arcs, most of her attacks have been purifying in nature.

    The 90’s anime does hold up but not compared to the manga, don’t compare them and you’ll have fun. Just don’t take Sailor moon seriously have fun and except the camp and take the emotional moments as a bonus. They are separate entity’s and should be treated as so and we should respect the reason for their sometimes rushed pacing or slow pacing and enjoy if you don’t than you’ll just deprive yourself of fun

    Before I continue watching the video, I'm chiming in to say that I watched all 200 episodes recently, and yes, it is so good.
    Especially in areas that modern anime lacks - humanization. The characterization that the filler achieved is one of the best things about the original anime.
    I enjoyed Crystal's sequel, but it's like Sailor Moon Speed Run. It's the whole game, more or less, but none of the tone.
    Edit: I did watch the whole video and I enjoyed it! I'd post my thoughts but y'know, energy.

    I watched the 90s anime as a kid, but quickly got my hands on the MixComix and knew there was so much more to the story. You did great on your video! 💕

    I wish that they could make more sailor moon episodes following the aftermath of the sailor stars arc where they'd show usagi and mamoru starting there life together where we get to see a wedding and then usagi being pregnant and having chibi-usa and see how crystal Tokyo came to be. Ugh I'd love for them to continue the story 😣🥺

    I wish that in the future a new anime adaptation is made. More faithfull to the manga but with 2 or 3 episodes to each issue, unless 1 episode is enough for the issue in question. That would result in a better balance between story development and using filler to develop the characters.
    And I hope that there is a rule in place that any character development can not be undone. At the end of each season we see a more decided and confident Usagi than in the previous season.

    For me Sailor Moon is even better than my own nostalgia for it. Every time i re-watch it I'm reminded of just why I love it so much and how much it inspires me still

    One thing that stands out to me on the 90s Sailor Moon is the score. It‘s extremely memorable and they keep using Bach.
