You have obviously spent lots of time researching this subject. It hasn’t been something I have been interested in myself, but I can see the difference since you pointed it out. I would agree with you, the Harlequin direction does make the room look less diner and more Old World and classy.

you're right, the Harlequin looks more elegant and timeless. Even the room at 3:23 would have looked even nicer than what it does, had it been done with the Harlequin sequence.

One thing you didn’t mention is that if you are installing checkerboard flooring in an old house where walls may not be perfectly plumb and square tiles laid parallel to the walls will emphasize the variances, where as harlequin will disguise them.
