    People always complain about the calarts sketchbook stuff and it just makes no sense to me, like you have to do that for art at normal universities too so I don't see the problem? But anyway, congrats!! Yours is lovely

      Eh, Calarts tends to reject stylization and illustrative elements, and prefers realism and figure drawings. People get mad at it.

      most accepted calarts sketchbooks i see are highly stylized, they're just often clearly using real life as reference, which often results in better quality work

    congratulations! One of the best sketchbooks I've seen so far! You certainly deserve it :)
    I'm 15 and looking to get into calarts some day and have been doing a reasonable amount of observational drawing however I was wondering how you did those long sceneries? Do you take a photo, draw them as you see them, a bit of both, something else? I was very impressed with the level of detail you added with si few lines :O
    Keep up the incredible work :)

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому +9

      Thank you so much +Anya Butler !
      For the long sceneries, I literally just sat in the same place for 2 to 3 hours and slowly drew whatever was around me. (starting from left to right) So the drawing is filled with different people from different times! I tried not to lift my pen too much either.
      For the ones in food courts or cafes, I usually sit at a round table so that I could move my chair around it and tilt my view. Or just turn my head around.
      I also did some before, after and during class. (And yeah I didn't pay attention ^^)
      All the best!!

    im only a sophomore and i go to an arts charter highschool for visual arts so im no that old and shouldnt be that worried, but im worried about my dream of being accepted to calarts because i draw cartoony styled things and im not the best at realism although i spend a lot of time practicing it, i just see these super out of my league sketchbooks and get nervous about my future, i was wondering if you have any tips are advice to help me in my future and help me get prepared for these sort of things.

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому +8

      Hello~ it's only natural to feel nervous.. I was too!! But just keep on practicing and never give up! You may not see instant results but you'll get there ^^ we all start somewhere! Go around the town and draw people/things around you, attend life drawing sessions, keep experimenting different styles and observe your favourite artists.
      Remember to enjoy your art making and learning!
      Peace~

    Congrats on getting accepted to calarts!
    I'm 14 and I really want to go to CalArts one day! I got a couple of questions in mind! if you don't mind me asking-
    How were you able to have ideas of what to draw? Did you get art classes in middle/high school? How long have you been drawing?

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому

      +Aiko Mae Hey there! Thank you very much!
      I don't really think too much when I draw. I just draw whatever I'm interested in at the moment. I took Arts and Crafts in secondary school (middle school) but I had a horrible teacher and don't remember learning anything :/ They didn't offer art in my high school unfortunately.
      My first life drawing session was 2 years ago but I really got into it in 2015.
      I've been drawing since forever ^^
      Hope this helps!

    • @AikoMae
      @AikoMae 8 років тому

      +Clarisse C 2 years ago?!
      _:(´□`」 ∠):_ I envy you!
      Do you draw often? 2-3 drawings a day? Or maybe more?

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому

      +Aiko Mae I draw pretty often :) I don't really calculate how much I draw though, so don't stress over that too much. Just draw when you seem to be waiting for something, have nothing to do, see something cool or if an interesting idea pops into your mind etc. Take it easy.

    • @AikoMae
      @AikoMae 8 років тому

      +Clarisse C Thank you! :D Have fun at CalArts!

    at 0:34 is that a continuous line drawing?

    • @SeriouslyNotNormal
      @SeriouslyNotNormal 8 років тому +6

      and also when drawing from observation, does it have to be from life or can you draw from photo references?

    • @CoeurDeLuciole
      @CoeurDeLuciole 8 років тому +3

      The best way is obviously seeing it in real life. If it's a photo theres the possibility people may say you are stealing if it is a legit copy of what the photo is

    • @mslightbulb
      @mslightbulb 4 роки тому

      Fegelein actually it’s because photos are very sharp. In real life we focus on something. Also the decision making process is more complicated in life drawing.
      You can take your own photos.

  • @barbaraguerreroriveros891
    @barbaraguerreroriveros891 8 років тому

    I was wondering if you draw from reference photography or real life, I mean, watching that and the proccess i'm not sure if you were drawing while watching or looking to a photography... And I really want to know.
    some studies, like the ones you do with a panoramic drawing, looks so damn amazing and we tried last year in a course, but I never know if I just freeze the people in the room that were moving all time or what and the lines in your studies capture that so well...!
    thank you so much for sharing!!

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому

      Hi!
      The panoramic drawings, classroom drawings, sketches of people etc were done on location. (No photo references)
      Some of the cultural/traditional clothing and art studies were done with photo references.
      When drawing on location, I don't draw everyone at one given moment. I draw different people doing different things at different times, as they come and go.
      Hope this helps :)

    a lot of these look like they're continuous line, are they? that's really impressive how do you do that omg
    also what pen + paints + markers? (if you used any) are these? it doesn't look like anything is bleeding through
    and did you draw the observationals purely from sitting there in real time and drawing, or did you take photos of places you went to and draw them?

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому +8

      Yup, most of the crowd pieces were done with a continuous line! Just take it slow and try to keep your pen on the paper ^^
      I used copic drawing pens, piga micron pens, some coloured staedtler pens and pretty much any random acrylic or crayon I find under my bed or something haha.
      All the observational drawings were done in real time. Only the cultural fashion studies were done with photo references :)

    • @ViolyreArt
      @ViolyreArt 8 років тому

      whoAa, ty for replying om,g how did you go slowly in real time then? when people move do you just wait for them to go back to the position you were drawing or try to change it/make it up or
      and what kind of sketchbook was this? it looks like u used a lot of watercolor for coloring stuff but my sketchbook can only handle really light watercolor washes :(

      +Tristan Jg Thank you! Well I'd say observe the world around you and draw everyday. Go for life drawing sessions at least once a week (preferably).
      There really is no specific way to go around it so don't be afraid to experiment. Draw draw draw to your hearts content, have fun and just try not to stress out too much ^^

    ive a question, when you did those huuuuuuuge crowd scenes, did you just sit down somewhere and do it? or did you go from a picture? cuz i was just thinking if you did it at the place the scene would be changing all the time with people and chairs and possibly tables moving all the time

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому +1

      They are all on-location drawings. So yeah the scene is changing constantly and the sketch is filled with different people doing different things at different times :)

      I used an Apica Premium C.D. Notebook Hardcover.
      I choose smaller sketchbooks so I can bring them everywhere, but it depends on your own preference. Thicker paper allows you to use a variety of mediums~
      Go for life drawing sessions at least once a week, draw things around you and explore! ^^ Try not to use a pencil, this way you'll think/observe more before drawing.

      Clarisse C I'm preparing to supply Calarts on 2018! But... there's one thing i'm worried about my drawing. When i so your drawings... i feel just nothing .
      My drawings are focused on base .
      What can i do? Keep draw or do something else?
      This is irrelevant question, but can i ask you where are you from?..

    • @claweeese
      @claweeese  8 років тому

      +K.A.E Pictures I'm sorry I'm not too sure what you meant when you said 'focused on base', but I take it English is not your first language.
      Perhaps you meant that you're focusing on the basics? Foundation work is important as well so keep working on it, but don't be afraid to explore beyond that. Study artwork by your favourite artists and see what kind of techniques they use. Try new styles and just experiment around.
      Oh and I'm from Singapore :)
