The first time I ever tried fish and chips was in Mexico 😂😂 yes Mexico. It was a cold morning and there was this little place that my dad and I had never seen before. When we got there it was a father and his son we asked what they served and he said fried fish with fried potates wedges. It smelled and looked so good and the taste was unique and the batter on the fish was something I had never seen before and the fries were so crispy and delicious. We went back next week and the place was gone 😢 years later I found out how fish and chips are made and remembered that place and I get emotional.
Danny the next time your in London & want Fish & chips please take yourself along to Masters fish & chips on Waterloo road near the Old Vic Theatre .The nearest you will get to proper northern fish & chips anywhere in London . Absolutely wonderful . From a person who lived on Graveleys for years. By the way you let us all down ,the mushy peas from the place you went too are tinned muck ..😂
From 1954 through 1957 my family lived in England where my Dad was stationed. I was too young to remember much. My brother and sister were 8 and 5 years older than me. They as well as my parents talk about the wonderful greasy fish and chips they used to get from street vendors. Served in a cone of rolled up newspaper and very cheap....like a Shilling.
NEW EVIDENCE has confirmed what many suspected - Mossley is home to the country's oldest fish AND chip shop. Joseph Malin opened his fried fish shop in 1860, in Bow, London - but he only sold fried fish. Oldham's Tommyfield Market claims to being the first place in England to sell fried chips - this was also
Correct I lived near Mossley. It was started by John Lees around 1860 but contested by a shop in London opened around the same time. .. I also had a chippy in the lakes for 8 years.. I had the information you gave us on my business website. The mossley chip shop is sadly a chinese take away or it was 10 years ago when i was last visited. Tommyfield Market is almost gone.. Most stalls demolished for a car park but I remember buying chips from a wooden and brick stall there when i was a kid.

Think you summed it up nicely Danny. Batter looked a bit thick. The rest looked spot on. Everytime you tried something you seemed surprised it was nice.
You know, when I crossed the English Channel on the ferry to visit my daughter who lives in Belgium, I went into the restaurant on board. I had the fish and chips, and it was delicious. Nice portion and hot.

Food prices are shockingly high now, all around the developed world. There is a fish & chips place near where I live in southern California. It is not a fancy place, or in a fancy area, but family run and quite decent. There is an old newspaper article from 2012 praising the restaurant and you can see a photo of the menu with prices in the background. When you look up to the current menu for the same items, everything has literally doubled in price!
As an American, I understood 70% of what was said, 90% of what was eaten and I'm glad to see this in my queue Subscribed. Oddly entertaining. Cheers from New Jersey.
I checked out their menu after watching this and I’m sure he was under charged. The curry sauce and gravy cost £2.95 each and a regular fish and chips cost £21. Then he got the saveloy which is £8. He also got mushy peas and water! He was definitely under charged. Check out the menu for yourself and see
you need to check again its 12.80 for the haddock , 2,50 for the saveloy , mushy peas 2.50, gravy 1.50, curry sauce 1,50, = 20.80 + 2.00 for the water which checks out at £22.80 : ]
Idiots are more than willing to pay 30%-50% over in store prices, and then another £10 on top for delivery from a shop only 3 streets away. The real problem is the techbro mafia insist that the independant takeaways have to sell their traditional cash sales at the same price as their vile middleman 30% tax. It looks like this shop has not signed up to that shit.
I've been coming to the Rock & Sole Plaice for over 30 years and it just gets better and better. love this guy's review! I'll need to try this spot the next time I'm 'across the pond'. As it stands now, and having travelled all over most of the UK, my favorite fish & chips joint was in...gulp, Inverness, Scotland!
If you had 2fish and shared the chips ,which is not uncommon practice ,and dispensed with the extras ,which you didn't go for in the first place ,two of you could eat well for 15 quid

As a northerner, it's good to see you get around the UK, makes it more interesting. However, London is a bit of a different beast, its so multicultural now, it's not very English, which is I guess natural evolution. In 1000's of years from now London could have many races from different planets eating fish & chips. I just wish prices could be affordable for most, as the poor are sadly getting poorer.
@Chris22967 nothing unfortunate about that just imagine how dead the already bland British food would be without multiculturalism maybe stick to your haggis and battered Mars bars ay.
Danny says down London you have to have a saveloy, reminds me of when I went to Wales and asked for Cod Roe. The fella in the fish and chip shop said, What's cod roe". Maybe a London thing?
I'm northern and lived in London in '80s when no chippies had curry sauce. The best authentic Chinese chippy curry sauce is Goldfish, you can now get it in Tesco. I do remember the saveloys which were basically bright red hot dogs. The modern version seems to have removed the food dyes. Never heard of cod roe in a chippy, but jars of pickled cockles or mussels (even eggs) are a thing up North. I only ever witnessed my uncle buying them back in 1990.
@@Drew-Dastardly sadly cockles and pickled eggs and also pickled onions are on the decline in northern chippies shame i love me a pickled egg, remember when i first went to the south west and went in a chippy and it didn't have curry or gravy, that was over 30 yrs ago and still not over it.
I’ve never come across curry or peas with fish and chips here in Oz. But …. It wouldn’t be fish ‘n’ chips for me without lemon and tomato sauce. Love your vids Danny ♥️♥️
Interesting to learn that tartare sauce isn't common up norf, also I like how you were eager to judge whether the gravy was up to standard as we do also enjoy gravy down south, although I guess its less ubiquitious outside of a sunday roast.
I'm surprised they had gravy. Most of the chippy's I've been to in London didn't do gravy. They didn't fry in beef drippings either. Did you quit drinking D&B with your fish and chips Danny?

It's criminal to pour curry and gravy on a delicate white fish like cod or haddock. Salt and vinegar, lemon and/or tartare sauce only. The curry and gravy are for pouring over the chips, mushy peas for the side. The saveloy was a perfect "breakwater" to keep the gravy juices away from the battered fish. Alan Partridge would not approve of your philistine approach to cuisine.
as a northerner i've never quite understood the gravy on fish thing we do up here, fish and gravy seems an odd combination, i will stick to the tried and tested mushy peas and fish
@@paulmilner8452 This is because it is not usually possible to stop the mushy peas contaminating part of the fish rendering the delicious crispy batter all soggy. At least for people who eat from plates. The opportunity of using a large sausage as a breakwater has been lost here.
Have to agree, gravy was originally something used to disguise the taste of poor food. id rather taste the fish, maybe a little tartare, never gravy or curry sauce.

I think one of those self contained countertop deep fryers with the basket might help...if they haven't been banned as dangerous to thinness yet.
I love your style of carrying your own camera - cameraman - table - fork knife spoon kit - neat - clean - hygienic - war footing ready -
He's saying not bad not bad at all and we all know he's loving every bit of this 😂
Not bad = amazing. Not too bad = awful. U r welcome.
That did look very good , price was also ok for the size of the fish . I find the fish and chip shops in London very hit and miss .Good review again .Enjoy London mate

The gravy in that place is almost northern. It's a work of art.
Prices are about right for the area.
Wiping his nose with the back of his hand that guy serving , nice 😂
I thought that was Peter Kay for a second…Brilliant video and a first time viewer…Thanks
Mushy peas are a good indicator of quality. That said, some places do decent fish & chips but just cba doing the sides properly.
Thanks. I live in London so I will try this soon. I wonder how it compares with my favourite. The Fryers Delight in Theobalds Road.
Watching from Detroit. You’re a joy to watch and listen to. If you have a situation that lands you in Detroit… the food’s on me!
Next time you review a chippy and you get mushy peas get them to put some vinegar on the peas. Game changer!
Love vinegar on my mushy peas and like it Wehrmacht I have mince and chips put it on the gravy…..yummy🎉
If you meed to tell the chippy that its not worth eating at
💯
Put a little vinegar on it pet
@@John-cn9bq Maybe the chippy douses all their mushy peas in vinegar to begin with? Why add more watered down "non brewed condiment"?
From 1954 through 1957 my family lived in England where my Dad was stationed. I was too young to remember much. My brother and sister were 8 and 5 years older than me. They as well as my parents talk about the wonderful greasy fish and chips they used to get from street vendors. Served in a cone of rolled up newspaper and very cheap....like a Shilling.
NEW EVIDENCE has confirmed what many suspected - Mossley is home to the country's oldest fish AND chip shop. Joseph Malin opened his fried fish shop in 1860, in Bow, London - but he only sold fried fish. Oldham's Tommyfield Market claims to being the first place in England to sell fried chips - this was also
Maybe that was Dannys great great grandad?
Correct I lived near Mossley. It was started by John Lees around 1860 but contested by a shop in London opened around the same time. .. I also had a chippy in the lakes for 8 years.. I had the information you gave us on my business website. The mossley chip shop is sadly a chinese take away or it was 10 years ago when i was last visited. Tommyfield Market is almost gone.. Most stalls demolished for a car park but I remember buying chips from a wooden and brick stall there when i was a kid.
Don’t they have saveloys up north 🤔
Heathens 😂
@@riddimchef1No saveloys anywhere in the north. Nearest available is a butchers 100 miles south of here in the midlands

Best chips in London, I've been going there for years as I worked nearby, now I still travel there for the chips, amazing. It's called the Rock and Sole Plaice, you missed the pun.
Good to see Danny in London - for central London that is a good price - you easily pay that where I live down in Surrey.
Great content. i also like how you don,t mind chatting to people during your reviews.Hope to see you some day and have a pic with you. i have gone to some of the places you have rated and really enjoyed trying the only remaining coal powered chip shop food.Keep up the great work. :) you got a sub from me Buddy!

Good to see more of your eating out vlogs in London ( my area ) that Fish & Chip shop looked a good one you should try the Pie & Mash shop thats quite tasty too Danny 👍
There's a vid of Danny and t'cameraman at M. Manze on Tower Bridge Road for pie, mash and the other stuff.

In Australia we have the saveloy battered. We call it a "Battered Sav" and if it is not Battered its a Frankfurt. Those chips are amazing.

I am a Londoner and there are a good few places still left, that sell fish from Billingsgate Fish Market , if you know where to go. Even all us rich London folks cant afford to pay £22. Most reviews that I see are detailed on sites for Tourists . Anyway the best that I have had is Yorkshire and Scotland. Ps Costs in London , Rent, business tax dont help.
Can you name a few London F&C outlets you would personally recommend?
I will be coming to London soon.
@@adamkane7513 Masters superfish ,Waterloo road near the old vic theatre ..10 min walk from Waterloo station. Nearest you will get to proper northern fish & chips. By far the best in London by a country mile . I was brought up on Graveleys in Elland road, Leeds ..They are almost equal to theirs.

It'll be tough to make it to south London from Indiana, US.......but if I get the chance, I'll certainly try it. All looks fantastic, and the sausage make me want to hop a flight straightaway.
Go Danny❤❤❤ in Scotland we call it a fish supper 😂🎉❤
Same here in Ireland, can’t beat a fish supper on a Friday…
To be fair, Scotland and Ireland are irrelevant
Isn’t it called Fush n’ chups then up north then? 😮

My favourite chip shop in London, always take any visitors there.🎯
Did you have to pay £12.50 ULEZ to take that suitcase into london 😂😂
no
Food prices are shockingly high now, all around the developed world.
Its due to rent prices in london, its hardly expensive to buy potatoes and fish.
Making the camera man earn his wage, carrying your chair 😂
Danny looking after cameraman's gearbag though. Even Danny thought it would get half inched.
Check out the menu for yourself and see
I think the menu online is for eating in the restaurant with table service as I looked too.
you need to check again its 12.80 for the haddock , 2,50 for the saveloy , mushy peas 2.50, gravy 1.50, curry sauce 1,50, = 20.80 + 2.00 for the water which checks out at £22.80 : ]
Idiots are more than willing to pay 30%-50% over in store prices, and then another £10 on top for delivery from a shop only 3 streets away.
The real problem is the techbro mafia insist that the independant takeaways have to sell their traditional cash sales at the same price as their vile middleman 30% tax. It looks like this shop has not signed up to that shit.
£8 for a Saveloy? Got to be having a laugh even for London
@@Lost_scotsman ye the saveloy is £2.50 you can see at the time frame 2:19
I've been coming to the Rock & Sole Plaice for over 30 years and it just gets better and better. love this guy's review! I thought he was carrying a painting 😮then realized he was carrying a portable table. Nice.
If you had 2fish and shared the chips ,which is not uncommon practice ,and dispensed with the extras ,which you didn't go for in the first place ,two of you could eat well for 15 quid
Oi, Oi, Savaloy.
This is the first time watching you. Liked it and subscribed. Thank you for your video. They have fish & chips not far from me but it's nothing like there where you are.
Don't know what is but Danny never quite himself down south
i think Dannys a national treasure now!!! its a great pity that some people havent much of a clue what he is saying!! cuz thats 75% stuff missed!! well at least!!
Unfortunately mate it's not just London that's not very English, its the whole of the UK.

That is some tasty looking fish! The only decent fish around where I live here in the U.S. is Red Lobster
Danny says down London you have to have a saveloy, reminds me of when I went to Wales and asked for Cod Roe. The fella in the fish and chip shop said, What's cod roe". Maybe a London thing?
I know what it is but i've never seen it in a Chippy (not that i would be looking for it)
My local chippy does it I'm in Suffolk.
@@Drew-Dastardly Goldfish is a lovely curry sauce, just don't get any on your clothes! 🙂

They're called Steak fries in the U.S. They are usually double-fried so they are extra crispy!
Called chunky chips here in UK lol
Steak fries does sound better, But would be confusing because we call thin cut chips - fries.
Very nice video. Fish and Chips is a favorite!
I know its "That Lunnon", but those fish & sauce prices are exorbitant!
ignorant thing to say
fish and chips in London is not the same without cockney owners.. best one used to be in Upton Park Market as soon as you come out of the station and turn right :)
I used to go there a lot during covid and I remember chatting to the owner and it sounded like they were on the verge of closing with Brexit and whatnot. It's good to see he's still open because it's the best chippy in London
How the hell brexit would impact on their business ? Explain

What !!!
Used to have these chips on my lunch break when I worked in Covent Garden. Were banging!
Brilliant ... thank you very much indeed.
