  • Mike Kewley ‘You Are Not What You Think…’ Interview by Iain McNay
Mike was obsessed with becoming enlightened since childhood - for him that was the point of living. He knew from an early age that the voice in his head wasn't him. He had some terrifying experiences of no-self which led to panic attacks and depression. Eventually he decided that he needed to drop the desire for enlightenment and somehow fix his life; after a time, he was much happier. He then had the experience that ended his search for enlightenment. Mike said, "There's just the impersonal flow of awareness being everything without exception, no way to get it and no way to get out of it. It basks in the ordinary and mundane as well as the fireworks."

I did a ten day Vipassana retreat led by Mike's dad in Bodhgaya in 1994 - a great experience.

I really liked this episode where we listen to the details in depth of the actual experience when someone disidentifies with their ego as well as the radiant awakening experiences. I only wish there was more. Thanks a million.

I loved this talk and appreciate that you are bringing in regular folks who have something to share. I especially loved Mike's guided meditation. He has the right soul-voice (something so honest) and a beautiful tone of voice for this sort of work/recording. He could create guided meditations professionally. Thank you.

Way back when I had these kind of experiences, mostly in the 80's. It would have been helpful to have resources like youtube. I thought, I was the only person on the planet that had experiences like Mike describes.

Yeah fantastic interview. So loved the bit about asking the voice in the head why it hated him... inspired me to write this...
'Warmly bring your wants and fears home. Welcome them in from the cold.
Admit to your deepest needs and desires.
Touch those things you need to touch. Hear those words you need to hear'.

Some of the things this guy said freaked me out, because I've had similar experiences. I've experienced the "mind vortex" (my name for it) many times when I was younger, but I was always able to muster the strength and the will to resist it successfully. It literately feels like you're being sucked into a black hole, and there is a very intense fear of anihilation. I think this is what Eckhart Tolle was experiencing when he heard the voice that said "resist nothing."

A wonderful example of how our "Longing to Belong" to our experiences.

Thanks Mike - this really brought tears to my eyes in recognition of similar processes I had to suffer through, to reach the same feeling of reality and self. I'd been earnestly seeking these last 10 years but a crisis of love was the key. Additionally for me, discipline and practice. Also recognising that the desire to be 'enlightened' is just a framework for the process of greater awareness. Also that where we are in terms of ego relation is OK. Learning to love the self, the ego and care and look after it allows us to care and look after all the egos in others, after loving the other in ourselves. Bless the Truth, it will set us all free.

Yes, indeed, the experience of no-self is quite unsettling, even terrifying as I too can attest to; there's no one running the ship at that time. However, it demonstrates like nothing else the mirage like nature of this self. It's another object in consciousness and like all other objects, insubstantial, capable of dissolution and disappearance.

Found this interview quite challenging still dont know which ship to take, it seems ive a choice between allowing everything in the moment or the law of attraction or maybe its a bit of both .... either way im still resisting ..... thanks to Mike and Iain for the challenge

    • @fionntainmacb
      @fionntainmacb 7 років тому

yes, Mike thank you for responding, as a spirit being on earth, and since my original comment, my body has evolved to see that the Law of Attraction is now old paradigm and what works for me now is to align myself with my spirit self, ask for all i desire, and trust that everything that comes my way is good for me and for the wellbeing of all. Alleluia!! :-)

Is the presenter a counsellor? I'm asking because he listens very well, reflects and seems to use the soler position

Richard Watson The best counsellor is an untrained person just being totally present with someone.

@@mikeyo1234 There are some very good trained counselors who are great listeners. But I've met some who just try too hard and it comes off as fake. Is that what you mean?

What shows up in the next five seconds, five minutes or five years are more likely than not personal to collective redundancies, often modified or rearranged to look as if the experience is brand new. To be a witness playing the game of baseball is very different from being a witness watching the game being played from the stands. My issue with today's spiritual/awakening movement is that it is being sold as entertainment rather than gathering greater insight and clarity for the future of our children and our world. The dissolution of ego comes naturally with absorption in the game. The destruction of ego, on the other hand, also comes naturally with mass extinction through nuclear war.

from 25:00 min it reminds me of derealisation and depersonalisation which can accompany panic attacks. maybe only other words for a similar experience.

I generally find Iain’s interviews well worth the time I invest. However, this one while somewhat interesting, was not informative in the usual manner. I guess it was because purely descriptive, phenomenological.
