Jez was a very successful children’s author having sold over 8 million books. He was always aware of two sides of his life; a creative, outgoing character who loved and enjoyed himself and also deep down a traumatised, damaged side which was mostly hidden away. While cycling he would sometimes experience ‘the sensation of golden light in my spine which put my thinking process in neutral and released me into a state of bliss. I could observe my life but there was a distance to it, almost as if it was happening to someone else.’
Later when his career took off he would sometimes feel strange. ‘It was as if something in me had fused: my hands went cold and my heart started racing; I felt abnormally stressed.’ These episodes disturbed him.
At one point he took a holiday which he hoped would put right whatever was wrong with him. But at one point, ‘my knees buckled beneath me, my whole Personality just fell apart - there was no coming back. It was what UG Krishnamurti calls “the calamity.” I couldn’t pull myself together. The centre from which I‘d previously operated just wasn’t functioning, this was accompanied by tremendous anxiety.’
In this interview Jez tells us his fascinating story as well as the realisations that he came to through this process, and the world he now lives in.
A rare, perfectly genuine man. So much spiritual guff is talked by the usual suspects. This man is talking from his real, true, personal pain and what he has learned. This is gold. Thank you Jez for not being pretentious. Respect.
Thanks to Jez for his authenticity and openness it takes courage. And to conscious tv for bringing us these many people's stories. Makes me feel I am not as strange as I often think I am.
No one really emphasizes how hard this journey is. The crippling emotions that become debilitating are challenging.. Thank you for giving me hope.
A friend refers to long period before big change (literally meeting a person who exemplified love, kindness, generosity) as "gluttonous misery".

I also want to say thank you to Iain. He has a wonderful interview style that does not get in the way of the interviewee, he gives them room or space to talk freely. Not many interviewers have this ability, they often get in the way of the interviewee.

Check out Suzanne Segal's story. She lost her personality and for 120 years she trudged between doctors trying to find out what was wrong. Her fear over that time was horrendous, and then the next layer dropped away as her witness vanished.... then eventually her entire life expanded so she realised that she was EVERYTHING. She was divine - as we all are but we cannot find the key to unlock our heart. Her experience was similar to Jez's.

I Am Being identified is perfectly natural. It’s called life and it’s free to be identified or unidentified.

If this is what spiritual awakening feels like its probably not a good idea to seek out. Better to stay as me, myself and go down the pub.
Definitely nothing in it for the “me”. But no problem, there will be heading off to the pub without a “you”. A separate you has never been to the pub anyway.
@@Sambasue I've heard this kind of talk before. It is a complicated matter. There certainly feels as if there is a real "me" in here. Who is making the daily decisions in my life if there is no-one in here? I cant imagine someone is emptiness inside. I dont believe them if they tell me they disappeared.
Someone has switched the camera on inside my head and is recording. That someone is who I am.
Who is the me that wants to go down to the pub?
He's feels like a real guy who has gone through his trials in a genuine way and knows the pitfalls of self delusion.
Great interview, one can tell he's definitely been through the wringer, sounds like the calamity, or a calamity. Sanity is always hanging by a tenuous thread for us all.
The hotel decor was atrocious, haha. Just kidding.
I made a mistake with the period of time - Suzanne suffered this terrible effect for 10 years, not 120....sorry....

Dont get me wrong. I love the channel, the interviewer and the interviewee and ofcourse this subject ... but I am 34 mins in .. into the interview, and why is no one still talking about what the trauma is about .. even if the cause was unknown, what sort of feelings .. agony .. pain..
i hope they talk in the second half ..
