  • #UnfinishedProject #1977CapriceBoxChevy W/ 350 AL Heads ARP Bolts COMP Cams Rockers Junkyard Find. Oh yea and some tri y headers as well to go with it. Another box chevy project makes it into the yard. This time its a #77Caprice4door that was pretty straight, body wise that appears to have been an abandoned project. It was last registered in 2018. Didn't get to look at the cam but the block had been punched .020 over.

    Whoa Nelley, the box that used to rock. My grandfather had a '79 four door. One of the best cars we had in our family. Bought for $1000 from my dad's company in 1983, we sold it in 1996 still running when my grandfather retired for $300. It was totaled twice in accidents and both times the pay out was over $1000 and I fixed it and he kept driving it. I also practiced my driving after school on it. It was a code #22 Light Blue on light blue inside, four door, 305 V8 made in Janesville, WI. It had PS, PB, AC,AM-FM, and a rear defogger, that was it as far as any equipment. Even the seat belts were black, didn't have color keyed belts. That car paid for itself three times over in the 13 years he owned it. LOL. I did my first timing chain in the spring of 1991 on it. I made my grandfather a bet that if I couldn't get it running for $100 in parts, I'd buy it, If I did, he had to buy us all lunch. I won. I spent $78 in parts (fluids, hoses, belts, fuel pump, new water pump, timing set, etc.) and the car roared to life on the first try after the repair.
    We got the VIN, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, N for Caprice Classic, 69 for four door, U for 305 V8 with two barrel, aka "LG3" RPO code, 7 for 1977 model year, S for St. Louis, MO assembly (same plant that made the Corvette then) and the rest is the production sequence.
    We got the tag, we can brag: ST77 for 1977 model year, 1BN69 for four door Chevrolet Caprice Classic, STL for St. Louis, MO assembly, 44D for Medium Green interior trim, 44L and 44U for Medium Green exterior paint which it is still wearing today, A52 for bench front seating, 03D for the fourth week of March 1977 production, which was the week of my birthday that year.
    On the windshield sticker, we have additional information. 4/18 should be the validation period, the lower right has the last six of the VIN #. The upper left likely has the license plate number and the certificate number and as of around 2013, the registration certificate also doubles as the inspection certificate, as the separate inspection sticker went away around that time. I believe Tarrant denotes Tarrant County which is where it was probably registered last. Tarrant is part of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington. Here in NYS, we have two stickers one is the registration which has your plate number, VIN #, registration class, expiration date, year and make, whether the vehicle is in the NYMA (NY Metro Area) or not, which determines what type of inspection you get, and then there are bar codes which are used for scanning the information into the inspection system at the time of inspection. The inspection stickers are punched out for the month of the year that they are due in the next calendar year and have a bar code which is scanned by the inspector before it's put on the vehicle. The motorist gets a print out of the inspection with all the details. In the past, the machine actually printed out the sticker's details, but that was eliminated when the dyno inspections went away. The year/type of vehicle and where you live determine what type of inspection you get. For those of us in the NYMA, 1996 and up get the plug in OBDII emission test and a safety, vehicles older than 25 years get just a safety, and in between years get a visual inspection of the emission controls and a safety inspection. When the inspector scans the registration, it should tell him/her what type of inspection is needed. My newer cars get the OBDII test and a safety, my classics just safety because of their age and they are registered historic. This also allows them to have vintage historic plates. So, I have 1973 issue plates on my '80 Trans Am that were transferred to the car in 1980 when we bought it new, my '79 Trans Am has my brother in law's old plates from his Datsun he owned years back, and my '84 Delta 88 has the original plates issued in July 1983 to my grandfather for his Caprice. The registration will say "VHIS" on it for "Vintage Historic".
    When I had to transfer the classics from my mother's name after she passed, I called upstate and the guy said, "Sure, you can keep those plate numbers. Just have the executor of the estate (my uncle) sign over the title and the plates to you and we'll just issue you a new sticker and title, happens all the time......".
    Whoa Nelley, a four door and it don't go no more. The square lost its' flare. Mint green no longer mean. VIN code "U", it's over for you. Made in MO, gotta go. 305 took a nosedive. 350, that's it for you bro. That's it, time to quit. Going to be flat, and that's that. Get the parts while you can on this "more door" because it's going to be squished, and we're all very pissed.

    Whenever I see cars in junkyards I think about the original owner and the day they brought it home,,was all shiny and new they wer probably thrilled to have bought a new car, sad to see them in this condition,,hopefully sum parts get reused

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 3 роки тому +4

      That's true. Every one of those cars were new at one time and shiny and perhaps someone's pride and joy. There were perhaps car payments, loans, saving for buying it new, trade ins and negotiations. The people that sold them new may be retired or gone by now.

    The 1977-1990 GM B-Body platform is the best platform of any kind. There are so many things you can do with it. They're comfortable, handle great for a big car. And they look awesome. My first car was a 77 Impala. I've had a Delta 88, Buick Electra and Caprice Classic Brougham, and now I drive a 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan. I'd like to pull the LT1 engine out of the Roadmaster and put it in an old box like that one. Maybe one day

    I always wonder how the car would look once it's been finished up. You'd probably see it at your local Cars & Coffee or for sale via Marketplace or the swap meets.
    This one seemed to have a solid foundation, but the rain got to it.

      It was probably in reasonably good shape before the "Hooptie" transformation. Probably bought by an older person or middle age couple or family brand new and then eventually got passed down to others who started the Hooptie transition, and the end result, like many other projects is that it has come here to its' final resting place.

      @@googleusergp It's too bad it had to end that way.
      There seems to be no shortage of 'projects' that are listed for sale and then scrapped when no there are no takers

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 3 роки тому +1

      @@nathankim7664 Because people overestimate what it will take to get something on the road again and then keep it on the road. Life gets in the way for many folks and other commitments take away from the project. It sits and then off it goes.

    Wow, do you realize how lucky thay you are that your local yards put everything out on the line. I live in central florida and all the local yards near me are privately owned and are ran by car enthusiasts/people that will NEVER let any performance parts hit the yard the inspect all the vehicles before putting them in the yard. If your lucky they will immediately pull them and sell them up at the check out counter for retail price or more. It really sucks, all the yard owners pull and sell ALL 6.0ls engine, 400 sbc, and all 454 big blocks and all 4l80 and th400 transmissions and sell them all to an outside core buyer. They will not sell any of that stuff to people off the streets. It really sucks, most regular parts are easy to get but you will never find anything that's truely a score around here. One time I got super super lucky though and there was a Ford truck that was put out 10 min prior me arriving and it had a brand new holley 650 double pumper and I pulled it and walked up to the counter and the checkout guy was pissed and tried to give me a hard time and tried to charge $150 but after some arguing he had to sell it to me for the price of any 4bbl carb which was $45 that was the only good score I ever found. I would have loved to found a set of those heads though, if you could pick them up for $100 or less it would be a score.

    Those window visors are expensive to buy.
    I see somebody went with the full heater delete on this car.
    I probably would nab that whole engine, there might be more goodies inside.

      I drove my grandparent's 1989 Cavalier that they gave me in 2002. I used it as my commuter car for a number of years. Most people would call that car 'crap', but with TLC and good upkeep, it was a reliable commuter car for me and got great gas mileage on my 44 mile a day commute.
