The night before I travel I pack all my cosmetics and bathroom supplies. In the morning I follow my normal routine-- out of the packed bag-- this way I know if Im missing anything! It works everytime ;)

You are a GENIUS. I always save those plastic bags because I felt like I would need them, and I never used them...NOW I CAN...packing cubes!!! You are my hero :))) (and I'm almost through with my latest Tic Tac case...bobby pins, here I come!!!) Have a GREAT trip. There is nothing easy about leaving your little one...but when you get to your destination, you will feel great! Trust me as a mom of 3 grown kids...Carson will be fine!

Have fun!! When I left my daughter for the first time it was for our fifth anniversary too! For her, it was easier to not call or video chat because she would melt after and want us. When we stopped, she could be happily distracted by grandmas spoiling and not realize she was missing us!

When I left my daughter for the first time to go overseas, I read her favorite books and recorded them on cassette (yes, it was a while back...). But you can do the same for Carson with digital audio recordings. So every night, I knew I was with her for bedtime stories. Have a great trip. Hubby and I honeymooned in the Bahamas over 20 years ago. You'll love it! Bon Voyage!

This may not apply to adults, but I always pack my girls (ages 5 and 2) a gallon size bag full of clothes for each day. I bring one bag per day we will be gone, and usually one extra. In that bag goes all clothing, socks, hair things, etc. so that it's all picked out and there is no digging around for matching clothes and accessories. I used to combine them but they are almost big enough now for a bag each. I just save these bags and reuse them each time. We also do the shower cap trick, works great!

Happy 5th Anniversary! when leaving my kids when on vacation i got a small journal and each day put in my thoughts for them for that day. That way later they looked back and could see that even though it was a vacation for me they were missed and loved each day i was gone. Happy vacationing!

Such great tips, I've never heard of the packing in cubes before. Need to store that one away for future use. I think everyone here has given such great advice on leaving the baby for the first time, I don't think I could add anything better. It's hard and you are going to miss him at times, but like everyone said, it's so important for parents to take some well deserved time to themselves. I really appreciate your bargain tips on how to organize with things you already have, instead of spending a small fortune on containers. Have a wonderful time! Thank you.

  • @ouvickie

I use plastic shopping bags to wrap my shoes in, then I can use the same bag(s) to put dirty laundry in while I'm traveling.
Also, I've learned to use a backpack as my carry-on, instead of everyday purse. I have a smaller clutch purse (with a shoulder strap) for credit/debit cards, ID, money, phone, lipstick, comb etc - this fits inside my backpack and I use it as a purse when traveling or going out. I put small bottles of liquid products inside a plastic zippered pillowcase bag, which I carry in my backpack and can easily take out at airport Security. Since backpacks have a lot of pockets, it's easy to store things in and use for a carry-on - even one set of rolled up clothes, just in case. This really saved me during a trip to Hawaii, when our luggage didn't make it until the following day.
Have fun on your trip!!!! :-)

Great tips!! Love the pack-it cubes idea. Forget the Eagle Creek ones. A tip I have for traveling with a child is to put outfits together ahead of time. My 7-year old daughter is a bit of a fashionista and sometimes takes forever to pick the perfect outfit. On vacation, I find there's no time for that. I will use your upcycled idea to put complete outfits in pack-it cubes! Thanks. Hope your trip was wonderful and that Carson (and you guys) did fine apart.

On a trip currently where I used those exact same sweater storage bags. Yeah, don't expect to do anything other than throw them away when you get home. They work better than nothing, but the zippers came off most of them already. Still though, at 50 cents each? What more could you expect? Definitely going to keep an eye out for things that come in better quality bags to save for packing.

I love your tips! I purchased a package of 8 shower caps at Dollar Tree and used those when packing for my honeymoon. I put the caps around the bottom of my shoes. I also purchased three small mesh laundry bags at DT and separated my underwear, socks, and bathing suits into each one. It made packing so much easier! No need to buy expensive gear when we can make do with what we have or just buy something inexpensive. :)

Very good idea, I've only been saving those plastic packaging bags for storage, but I don't think I had ever used any of those for packing cubes. Good that I've watched this video now, cos we'll be leave for a short overseas trip in about a month time. I've always enjoyed watching all these ideas videos. Thanks!
Our first time to leave our kid was when she was 2 years old, it was a fail separation (even though it was only a few hours separation!!), so finally we just took her back and she stayed with us the whole time.
When come to kids, I think I'm more an extreme protective mother, we'd always travelled together (unless they needed to travel with their band / choir or whatever), it's only been a year or so that my hubby & I had finally travelled without our kids (the eldest one is 23 & the youngest one will turn 20 in about 2 months time!) So, sorry to tell you, but I don't have any good tips for you to feel better to leave your boy behind.

Oh my tip for my SON leaving ME for the first time isn't a good one :( I stayed up and cried all night long. See My Uncle Boad and Aunt Marion lived in Marietta Ga. and My mom and her husband at the time was going down to visit and they wanted to see Jackie, and even though they only lived in Marietta and us in TN, we didn't get to see them much because of everyone's work and life, but I allowed him to go at 6 week's, which I'm happy I did, that was the first and ONLY time Granny Dorothy got to meet Jackie ;(
I knew Jackie would be well took care of, and I knew he'd be fine, and I also knew I needed the rest as I had Preeclampsia ( Can't spell it ) And I was in the hospital A LOT, very worn out, and all that stuff that you and your body goes threw during child birth ( NATURAL )
You have to take care of his mom and dad and their marriage, just as you'd take care of him, maybe when you get back well rested who knows Carson may have a sibling on the way LOL ONLY JOKING......RELAX and ENJOY your vacation he'll be fine !
Man he's frown and looks more like you daily ! I just want to kiss him and hug him to death ! :) so you can do it for me please!

When leaving the kids, I've left a little gift for them to open each day--maybe to start the day or to end the day. I try to bring something home for them. They had a great time with the grandparents.

Last year when we were heading to the beach on vacation I wanted to have more room when traveling. I decided to use the Space Bags to pack our clothes, towels & linens. OMG!!!! I have 2 teenagers and I was able to put all my clothes, my husbands & my sons in 1 suitcase. When I was ready to come home repack the space bags for the trip home!!!!

This is great! Also a space saver, roll your clothes. It also minimizes wrinkles.
