I'm gonna get slack but oh well. I've come to accept all this modern metal music as just something completely different to what everything with all the other sub genres such as like death metal, thrash, symphonic, power, etc. All I say it is now and I've heard other modern day bands say this as well. It's just "Core" now. It's just It's own thing now. I listen to both ends of the spectrum and I love both, but there's just huge distinct differences these days. Same thing with "shoegaze" and "post rock". Then again, for me these days, I tend not to bother with labels cause it's really just stupid. Like what vessel said himself in 2017, "Don't lose yourself worrying about genres" or something on the lines of that.

I agree with you, but post-metal is already a sub-genre. I've been calling them post-djent, like they clearly take influence from the djent scene of the 2010's, but they sound different from bands like Periphery and Meshuggah. Although, in the case of Sleep Token, since they include so many different elements of different genres, it's hard to pin them down. That's why most people use terms like "modern metal" or "alt metal" or "baddie-core"

I read the article and it just feels the way gatekeepers talked about metalcore and deathcore when I was a teen growing up in the mid to late 2000's. A lot of the bands he talked about Avenged, Bullet, Trivium, Killswitch, Underoath, Shadows Fall were all hated by lots of the 'real metulz' fans then, particularly as they would share bills or go on Warped Tour/Taste of Chaos with people like Fall Out Boy, MCR, Funeral for A Friend, Paramore, Chiodos, Taking Back Sunday etc. Same happened to deathcore and mathcore acts of the mid to late 2000's like Architects, Bring Me, Job for a Cowboy, Norma Jean, Johnny Truant, Suicide Silence, Fall of Troy, etc. as they hated the image of all black super tight skinny jeans and hoddies, nose/lip piercings, eyeliner, black nail varnish and (dyed) emo fringes.
To me this is just the new way to say you are either real metal or you aren't we don't want your normie influences here. It comes across to me as, 'If you don't drink beer out of Viking Horns, own a battle jacket and only listen to real metulz then do one.' The same people who slam Sleep Token, Spiritbox and Bad Omens now will be talking about them fondly in 5-10 years.
This article is also very US centric as the next group of headliners in Europe and the UK will include people like Parkway and Architects along with who he mentioned Europe has seen very European headliners like Volbeat, Nightwish, Sabaton and WIthin Temptation at the top of big festivals.
I want festivals to be a place where I can see Emperor, Amon Amarth and Frozen Soul on the same day as MCR, Holding Absence, Lamb of God, Sikth, Knocked Loose, Spiritbox, Poppy and Chase and Status. I think people have to understand that just because we may like Death Metal, Thrash and Black Metal doesn't mean we can't also like pop, synthwave, metalcore, hardcore, emo, pop punk, punk, indie, glam rock, drum and bass, etc.

    • @TheJordan75
      @TheJordan75 13 днів тому +3

It's always been the same with gatekeepers and elitists. They hate anything that is mainstream while ignoring the fact that it's good and healthy for the genre to be popular.
Back in the 80's they hated glam/hair metal, in the 90's they hated Groove metal and Nu-metal, in the 2000's they hated metalcore and deathcore, in the 2010's they hated djent. And now this. It's nothing new, they will always bitch about the labels and irrelevant things.

"most popular songs happen to be the catchiest", our boy here just discovered hot water. Our favorite songs will always be the ones that we keep remembering because of a sound that we like. The writer's blabbering and gatekeeping, that's the juice of the article. Then saying that BMTH is metal with pop (and numerous more) influences whereas Sleep Token is pop with metal flavor isn't a solid point; like, how can you discern the precise boundary that labels music and influences into a specific genre? We are talking about a free, ever-evolving art, trying to categorise music to the extreme is a complete waste of time. Also, we've already discussed FAR TOO MUCH on if metalcore is part of the genre, but not all influences are allowed? Even thrash metal mixed hardcore punk with metal, so what are we even talking about. Metal musicians must be able add electronic, pop, even a sexy saxophone and be free of doing so, be free of developing the genre, bands and listeners will always gain from this. In fact, there's no reason to stick to the tradition and make the same music all over again, not simply because of the market's demand of following the trend, but also because stagnancy is pointless from all points of view, just like the most actual trend in the core scene of making octane-like djenty hits that sound generic, lacking stylistic personality

The problem is that all genres fluctuate and evolve over time, and people need to realize that. It’s not just metal. What popular is always going to keep changing. Pop, hip hop, R&B, and country don’t sound nearly the same as they did in the 90s, but that’s okay. Because there’s something for everyone, but that doesn’t make one artist any less true to the genre than another. And the same goes for metal. Metal can have poppy choruses or no-cleans tracks, it can have hip hop influences or it can take more hardcore influences, it can have more riffs or it can have more breakdowns. None of these are necessarily more metal than the other, just different styles, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  • @coder4liberty

The way musicians see this stuff clearly differs from non-musicians. I am 58. I was around for all the old stuff. I played it. Still I don't get what people even mean most of the time when they say something is metal or not. Do you know what I remember most about that time? There weren't 30+ genres/sub-genres some with ONE band in it, it was just METAL and bands who tried to be as unique as they could be. If a band strays outside of the box everyone has put them in today metal fans freak the f*ck out like someone committed blasphemy. It's absolutely obnoxious IMO. Someone says "that's not Metal Core" or that's not "Tampon Core" (or whatever the f*ck it is) I'm over here saying "who gives a damn"?? I listen to a band, if I like it it goes on a playlist, if I don't it doesn't and I move on with my life. So many of the people complaining about something being wrong use all these labels and sub-labels not realizing putting artists in boxes is part of the problem.
As far as bands not being what they used to be, what band of any genre is what they used to be? Do you really think when you are 70 that you're going to be exactly what you were when you were 25? Musicians play music until they drop mostly because they love music. The idea they have to stay the same the entire time is absurd. Nobody does that. Nice that someone likes the old stuff. So do I but life moves on. I tend to like bands who are all over the place and don't say what genre they are in. They may play at a metal festival but they aren't going to put themselves in a box. If they put themselves in the box even for a moment people freak out when they want to do or incorporate something else. When I talk about a band and I get "that's not _____" I DGAF. Labels are part of human language I get it. It's nice to be able to use a label to describe something but arguing over it is dumb and a waste of time.

However, I am very guilty of this myself, as I don’t listen to any of the bands that were mentioned in this video, besides BTBAM. I miss riffs, what can I say? 🤷🏼‍♂️ and I will welcome riffs back into the evolution of Metal any day. I miss when metal kicked you in the face right when the song starts and was 5 minutes of face melting riffs and shred, instead of having to go through 2 minutes of meh to get to the meat (meh being clearly subjective) or using pitch shifters and rely heavily on sound design and production. As someone who creates music, I am very well aware that if you don’t get with the times, your music will get left behind. I see and I feel it. #bringbacktheriffs

The female attention paid to bad omens is just as applicable to stripping their metalhood, as their synth elements and catchy choruses. He clearly included spiritbox in the article, despite the indisputable heaviness of every song, because including pictures of Courteney emphasizes his point. Heck, give me Silent Planet, Knocked Loose, Architects -- even ADTR -- but I still don't understand the hype over this band. Checked them out multiple times with intent to get into their vibe -- each time ended in disappointment. And the hype about the drummer is ridiculous. He's kinda sloppy. There's far less known drummers like Kristina Rybalchenko, Anastasia Sereda or HalDrums who are WAY tighter and cleaner than this guy. sorry, but for me this band called Spiritbox is a ridiculous and completely overrated average music band! They sound like a certain kind of metal, they are only "known" to me for one reason besides extreme social media feeding, pushing on Tikitoki, Instagram, UA-cam etc... Just because they have a female singer and stand out as a front woman... The quality is also debatable, in my opinion also too much on a, no, raised to the pedestal to number 1 as the best singer in metal by fans who have no idea about certain mechanisms, techniques vocally, musically, what works with instruments, voice and much more! Then there is the media and the internet, and quickly, especially in the USA, this connection catapults something not so high quality to almost a certain world top in just a few weeks! But this network of all players also destroys an artist - band just as quickly if it has to! I have seen Spiritbox at least 3 times now, heard them as a support act and once on their tour! And all these times I found this band so boring, almost bad, partly because they are not real musicians - artists who master their instruments and craft far better than average, perfectly like the really big names in the scene! No, they are first and foremost computer music software artists and sound music developers! Whenever there were "technical problems with their computer and data" the four of them were completely screwed on stage because they couldn't really play the sound themselves live on stage with their instruments and their voices! 90% of it came from a data stick, everything was produced in the studio.... They only do a certain accompanying "show" on stage on bass, guitar and sometimes you can clearly see with the drums that things come out of the speakers that the drummer didn't actually play like that on stage! For me, this totally overrated band called Spiritbox is a phenomenon in the new metal genre era that needs its own category of music - metal that is and is mainly generated on computer sounds, plus improved and sounded too perfect, etc.! For me, that's so computer metal! These are not long-haired, sweaty musicians who play with their hands and their heart and soul in their craft - heavy metal!
    Greetings from 🇨🇭🤘🏼

But of course they aren't just metal they are so many different things we've already heard and so many we didn't that we can't really put a label on Sleep Token and that why we loved this band in the first place in my opinion. On the topic of modern metal I would say it's got to a point where a lot of bands mix sounds the same and is sometimes overproduce which I don't really enjoy but I would they how the things are going this years are blurrying our old definition of metal and we may have something new that would be very cool

Undeniably there is a difference between the metal and "metal" crowd. Sure, theres a ton of bleed over but they will always be distinct. As someone who got into metal through various core genres and is getting deeper into traditional death metal, they're just different. They will always be seperate scenes, snd whether something is metal or not does not matter. But nobody argues if Iron Maiden or Panters are metal, but many will argue that Sleep Token isnt. I think that means something. It's like there is a fear of not getting to call yourself a metalhead or being excluded from some internet space because you're not actually listening to metal. It doesn't matter, but I do feel like there are people that want to exclude others and should have the right to if their scenes don't jive with them. They don't have to accept you, it is definitely the more poppy side of metal/rock music that wants to be a part of death metal/black metal spaces, that's always been bizarre to me.

That guy needs an editor. It is a massive rant about how I dislike modern music and culture and love nostalgia. UCK just wants guitar wankery and being technical for a technical shake.
Metal has lost cultural relevance because it hasn't been adopted and is stuck in the past. Bad omans, sleep token and spritbox are one of the few bands that finally cut through by adapting.
Metal and rock should be doing well right now as country music and more guitar-focused music are growing, and hip hop, etc., is declining. Not a lot of people like Finn McKenty, but he was bloody right when he said that this is the entertainment business, and you need to make stuff that is entertaining. Quite frankly, metal hasn't done that in years.
