So it's been 2 days, and after replaying it and checking the real meaning behind the album, I have to admit that I REALLY LOVE THIS!😭 It's SO sad but it's SO GOOD!!
The phrase “9 going on 18” does not mean a span of nine years. Rather it is a euphemism (I think only in the US, not sure about other English-speaking countries) that means a young child seems much older than they are. It essentially means “she’s 9, but acts 18,” which is an attitude that predators often use to justify their abuse of young children. There is a romantic comedy that came out in the early 2000s called “13 Going on 30” which is about a teenaged girl who successfully makes a wish to become an adult overnight which borrows its title from this concept. In the story of Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel is nine when her father starts abusing her and ten when he dies in a fire. There is no indication that Ethel caused the fire (I suspect her mother did it, and we’ll find out when Hayden/Ethel releases the promised album about her), but she clearly blames herself for her father’s death in some way. That’s why in Family Tree she says “I’ve killed before and I’ll kill again.” Also, “these bones I’ve been hiding” isn’t a literal body, but a reference to the English euphemism “skeleton in the closet,” which means a person is hiding a dark secret from the world.
Ptolomea is not a made-up word by Ethel, it's actually the name of the 9th circle of hell in Dante's inferno where traitors are being hold. In this song, Isaiah (who picked up Ethel with his truck in the middle of the highway on Thoroughfare) drugged her and she starts hallucinating.
This is one of the best albums of todays time and anyone that wants to argue with me can argue with the nearest wall because i simply will not hear it. Ethel is a literal genius.
You HAVE to listen to the acapella version of Ptolomea, there's A LOT more going on under the instruments, specially in the last part you can hear her gasping and choking as she dies and at the very last moment you can hear her death rattle.
My interpretarion for family tree is that she’ve killed her past. Ethel as a trans person i think that the line in the intro “forgive this bones i’m hiding from no one successfully” is the past version before coming out and forcing herself to not being who she really is. Now in family tree she says “and the bones i’m about to leave” so she accepted who she really is and it’s not afraid of leaving all of that behind.
Love this theory. When I first heard the intro, this was my first instinct. She's talking about her own bones, specially that it follows the "crosses all over my body" line.
omgg if you rlly liked this album id suggest reacting to nicole dollanganger, shes actually good friends with ethel and has a similar vibe, i hate how unrecognised she is given that ethel was inspired by her!! if you do id suggest natural born losers as the album to start with, its her best one imo!!
woah! this album is so sick... great reaction!!! ALSO... can i ask you to react to Natural Born Losers by nicole dollanganger?? kinda think you'd like it... ethel is really inspired by her work i feel like

damn i get so sad when people dont understand the story of the album 😭😭
Your comment on karma during Sun Bleached Flies before the line 'if its meant to be then it will be' was magical. You foreshadowed it
