As a pre-teen, a typical rocknroller, my dad happened to play this sextet from his enormous record collection. Precisely at that moment I knew opera would surpass all else, that I’d become an opera nut. Loved the journey and exploration.
Luciano had the voice of an ARCHANGEL! His rendition of Nessun Dorma always gives me GOOSEBUMPS. He was one of the most gifted tenors ever! Rest in Heaven, maestro.
I wish this vid could only have started about 10-20 seconds earlier. I remember watching this show when it was first broadcast, and when Kofi Anan came out to give a tribute to Luciano, I'll never forget the expression on Pavarotti's face - he looked as if he did not at all understand why Kofi Anan, of all people, was coming to talk about him He found out!
And you notice who paid him honor? Kofi Annan. And why? Luciano Pavarotti raised more money than any individual in history for the U.N. on behalf of the CHILDREN of the world. At least his journey wasn't all about money, fame and jealous competition - aka Domingo. His life was significant, not only because he was a great tenor - he was a great MAN.
I cringed. Without a doubt Pavarotti was the greatest tenor of his era, as Caruso was of his own. I would have preferred that Kofi Annan praised Pavarotti with "Your heart is as beautiful as your voice," rather than with "Your heart is even BIGGER than your voice," thus giving him a diagnosis of cardiomegaly. No wonder Pavarotti burst into tears.
You said it all. Thanks. He was such a treasure in many ways. He was not "just" a fantastic, amazing tenor with the most beautiful voice. He was much more. I feel so saddened for the fact that I was born too late for to see him. I would give anything to go back in time just to see one performance. And how I wish I could have just one hug from him... Or just an opportunity to write a fan letter to him! I was only 11 when the maestro passed away - knew the name of course (classical musicians in family), but that was it. Now at 25 I grieve the loss and miss the man terribly. Just how funny and cruel life can be... It's weird really - to miss someone you never knew! I cannot explain something I can't understand myself, but that's just the truth. I miss him like crazy - I feel some kind of connection everytime I listen to him or watch an interview. And every time it hurts, knowing that he's gone. Rest in peace, Maestro. We love you, you will never be forgotten.
Haha, Jack Nicholson with his sunglasses on always makes me like him, as usual. :) But "unusual" Pavarotti crying always makes me love him. Thanks, Dee!
Yes. It's the sextet of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor... which was a big thing up until the 1970s at the Met - was played every season for almost 100 years. And it was also the opera with which Pavarotti made his American debut in 1965.
I think they attempted to add some oold with the young here. Milnes and Anderson are WAY past their time here. Although their presence was sentimental here, their voices really were not up to snuff.
He was just a great singer, nothing more and nothing less!!!! I don't care about all the humanic things HE did cause thats what you should do when you are famous, just USE IT!!!
Well that's the point here - only a few celebrities do that, use their fame and money to help others. At least not for the public image, but of love. Luciano did, he cared about the others - about people in need and the children and he showed it. And for that people love and respect him. He had a good heart and that is not granted in today's society. Neither did it back then. People tend to be selfish.
The kennedy center always has the distinction of picking the worst opera singers to pay tribute to the best singer (with the obvious exception of Sherill Milnes, though god knows how they convinced him to perform alongside the DISASTROUS June anderson)
Uh no. you show your ignorance of Luciano - you must have him confused with Drama King, Domingo. He was the sickening, over-the-top, overkill King. Luciano was never pathetically dramatic - he was ALWAYS SMILING. (Jealousy is such a green-eyed monster, isn't it?) And another thing. Luciano was very ill his last years - so show a bit of humanity, if there's any in you. 'Mingo's day will come, too & I hope people show him more respect than you have this great man.
I have never seen such an uninterested group of singers. It was sad and funny that the musician honorees all had :| expressions throughout the whole segment while Jack Nicholson was all smiling (I'm guessing he doesn't go to the opera much, if at all).
Hmmm....maybe they should have chosen the group that honored Julie Andrews to do the Pav tribute as well lol. I mean half of those singers were classically trained anyway. This was kinda...dull...and i LOVE opera =/
The greatest singer who ever lived.
And a great man period.

A wonderful singer and a man with a big heart. Rest in peace, Luciano. You are missed.
dee1153 thank you for this .. His life was significant, not only because he was a great tenor - he was a great MAN.
A beautiful voice rests in peace.
Grazi, Maestro.....
Pavarotti always was a nervous wreck backstage He didn’t believe he did enough for people
but hearing it made him realize that he was that good
I have so much love for his work... PAVAROTTI...
I believe luciano deserved what he got, the man was an awesome outstanding human been that will truly be missed!!!
the most beautiful voice you will ever hear.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was so sorry I had missed this tribute, and this helps make up for it. Molto grazie.

He will never die…
LUCIANO UN DIOS. EN PAZ DESCANCES.
Grande Maestro ti manchero sempre. Grazie per tutti
The Nessun Norma.....PERFECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nessun Dorma for christ sake!
Rapp Scallion Christ has nothing to do with this my friend. Sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Lord have mercy, there was a lot going on in that performance!

Miss you Maestro !!!
POST MORE PLEASE! THANK YOU SOM MUCH!
i love the face of Jack Nicholson, he seems to be very excited
luciano number one always!!
I didn't know that Jack Nicholson is opera fan and particularly fan of Luciano..
Luciano, you paid attention. - Annan
The mingling voices makes my head hurt😅
I know there is more, please post it!
@5:12 LOOK AT PAVAROTTI !!!
Why wasn’t he wearing the rainbow necklace that all the other honorees wore? Or was it tucked under his jacket? Julie Andrews was wearing hers.
Re pavadomingo's request, the introductory portion is posted as: Luciano Pavarotti - Credit where credit is due...", posted by modenacon
Does anyone know where can I see the video about his life that was played at these Kennedy center awards?
I never liked June Anderson. Now I know why. Pavarotti DESERVED so much more!!! Arnold Bourbon Amaral
I think they attempted to add some oold with the young here. Milnes and Anderson are WAY past their time here. Although their presence was sentimental here, their voices really were not up to snuff.
When they start singing, I was half-expecting Bugs Bunny to say it was "acoustically poifect."
It was an excerpt from The Three Stooges classic “Micro Phonies” 😂
He was just a great singer, nothing more and nothing less!!!! I don't care about all the humanic things HE did cause thats what you should do when you are famous, just USE IT!!!
God bless

I loved this! Please, from the same program, do you happen to have the segment honoring Quincy Jones?
6:21 Audio went out here.
ive never liked this sextet, much less this disaster. On the other hand, I greatle love, respect and miss Pava

I didn't know Lloyd Bridges was an opera singer!!!!
I'm confused by what Kofi Annan said at 0:52.
Milnes could have spared us this performance! Why?????????????

They had Renee Fleming earlier in the evening, why not here?
June Anderson was in Renee's league and Lucia was one of her roles.
Wonderful tribute to a titan of a man.
That being said, someone please shut June Anderson up, she is ruining it :-P
La Creme de la Creme there . I couldn't get in wonder why??
Do you have the complete video of this or any other classical honorees?
I encourage you to check out the Kennedy Center tributes to Yo-Yo Ma, Van Cliburn and Zubin Mehta, for starters.
The Three Stooges brought me here
No song !! 7:35

Hey kofi annan how about you give some of the money you stole to these poor kids
The Three Stooges brought me here
I'll bet you like to watch wrestling.
