    Another tip for straps... I bought a pack of the clips, and put an extra each strap, one facing forward, one facing backward. Never had a strap pop off and not any harder to put on.

      That works too. Great suggestion, and you have spares.

      Excellent tip. I was about to do it last year but didn't get to it.

    Thank you! These tips are so helpful and very much needed. The colder the weather, the more the straps pop off, the more my fiddling inconveniences the group. You have saved the day!

      Glad it helped. Keep that televator hack in the back of your head. Hope you never need it. Combine these tips with our first set of tips: ua-cam.com/video/KgZrjkj4YWg/v-deo.html

    I bought my first pair of Evo Ascent 6-7yrs ago and until now I knew nothing about the hacks just shown. Thank you for sharing.

      I was in the same boat, they need an instruction manual. I cannot believe these two hacks are coincidental. Thanks for watching.

    Great video. I agree that the msrs are great. I got lightning ascents in 2010 back when they had a lifetime warranty. Unfortunately the silicon/plastic bindings have completely disintegrated and msr has been giving me the runaround for two years now, more recently citing supply chain issues and to check back in September. Haven’t been able to use them for two seasons now and it seeks like a waste to throw away perfectly otherwise fine snowshoes.

      Unfortunately I am in the same boat with MSR. My first pair is several years old and the plastic binding has become brittle and broke. I sent them into MSR at the end of this season. I have my fingers crossed I will have them back by next season. MSR is a great company and given the choice, I will pick the MSR option.

    Philip Werner has an article about that televator/binding hack on his website. He's used it.

    MSR Snowshoes are top notch. I have been using them for years and recommend them to new snowshoers. This video shows two tips that will help you enjoy your snowshoes even more. The first tip will work with any MSR model, the second tip works with all Ascent series snowshoes.
    Is the strap popping into the clip a design thing or coincidence? Is this documented by MSR anywhere?

    Great tips. I ended up borrowing a pair of Tubbs when my MSRs broke and never went back. Had the same pair of Tubbs for 4 years now unfortunately Tubbs stop making the binding I like to compete with MSRs new bindings lol

    I carry a few different sizes of zip ties - would work for broken binding as well as a broken strap among many other things.

      I had plastic zip ties with me when they broke, I was concerned with the movement of the binding. I would have cut through the plastic. I have been told they make metal zip ties.

      My pleasure, the clip trick works really well. And keep the televator hack in the back of your back pocket. I did not think I would ever need it, but I did and was very thankful.

      The first tip is not applicable to your Lightning Ascents, but the Televator field repair should work. Just need to be careful of the decking.

    Nice tips. Question. What is the televator for? Looking to get new shoes this year.

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  2 роки тому +2

      The televator helps with inclines. The pop up and pop down as needed. When going uphill, you pop them up and it feels like you are on steps. It saves a lot on your calves b/c you heel does not go all the way down.

    Here’s a tip, buy the repair kit, pick up a couple of small cotter pins from an auto shop or hardware store that fit through the hole in the pin and leave the pliers at home. It will work fine with a cotter pin till you get home. Just spread the pin with a knife if you need to, but your fingers will probably be fine. Less headache, less weight and less chance you will loose that little ring in the snow.

      Great tip! However, I still think a small multi tool with pliers is a must have in your pack. I have used the pliers so many times to repair microspikes, snowshoes, trekking poles, zippers, eye glasses, etc.

      I thought that too when I first heard about it, never thought I would need it, until I did. Now you have it in your back pocket just in case.

    MSR has screwed me around for a number of years on Warranty repairs and parts as well. Mountain Safety Resarch is more like Major Scam & Ripoff. I don't know what they "research"?? How to make cheap bindings? I love the design of the snowshoes but the straps are definitely a very WEAK LINK!

    • @OutsideChronicles
      @OutsideChronicles  Рік тому

      Sorry to hear that. I am having issues sourcing new bindings for my 12 year old EVO ascents. I have beat the crap out of them and they owe me nothing. I sympathize a bit with some of the supply chain issues companies are experiencing since COVID. I still hold MSR in high regard based on the performance of the gear I own.

  • @joelalain

    those *&?$/** bindings are the most crap and frustrating bindings ever. Why they made and STILL sell these is a mystery. It makes me want to throw my snowshoes in the wood and come back with just my boots. A &?$%&$?% misery. I have the lightning ascent snowshoes that i otherwise love but these bindings are blood-boiling
