Roses and Connecting the Woodland to the Meadow. Joe's Country Garden June 2024

  • It's been a rose-tastic June and I've been loving it. There are loads of gorgeous roses all blooming in the garden and I've been taking pics and will try and work out what they are. Meanwhile, the deer has been "helpfully" pruning off the lower branches. It can't get enough of the roses! I don't mind, and until I have veggies in, it's a garden to share with everyone. There's been a robin picking up treats as I've been working too. What I've really enjoyed doing over the past few days is a bit of designing on the hoof - as I walk around the garden and create pathways through the woodland, I've been doing little bits and bobs, like pruning off the odd branch, or adding a bench and mown area to the end of the garden. But what I'm doing today is connecting the woodland with the rest of the garden. Now the railway sleepers are out I want to link up the different garden areas bette. I have found two spots where you just want to go from the woodland to the grass and vice versa. So I'm digging up and saving the plants in the beds and then mowing through. I'll heel in the plants (mostly Nectaroscordum) that I have saved and find a new home for them in due course.

That was a lot of fun, Joe! I'm getting a better sense of the different areas you are creating. Fabulous roses, and the yellow jasmine I've never heard of before. 😊

What a wonderful garden. Your roses are impossibly beautiful! It is sweet of you to be so agreeable about the deer nibbling your roses. I do hope he doesn't tell all his buddies about it. Thank you so mush for sharing.

How amazing to inherit such a great variety of roses - so useful for us to see how the rose you cut right back has flourished. I really love seeing each step you are taking to develop the garden. 💜

I just put in the same Philadelphus - Belle Etoile in my front garden and it's flowering now. I remember the scent of it from 40 years ago when I stood infront of a mature specimen and just inhaled it over and over again and even coming back to inhale it some more, it's just that good.
I've been sniffing my young specimen, it's only just over a foot high, but it's taken me back to my 30s... I knew it would. I have to drag my neighbour in to come smell it... No, I'm not obsessed 😁

I think I recognise some of those roses. Boule de Neige, the white quilled to the green button eye. The pink crumpled Gruss an Aachen. Some David Austin’s, possibly Lady of Shallot. I’ll have to watch your montage through a few times to hazard a guess at others. Lovely collection to have!

Hi Joe, I really enjoy seeing your garden, it is coming along nicely, I like your crazy paving too. I think it's funny how many plants you mentioned in your rose-tastic video that I grow in my garden on the West Coast of Canada. Mock orange, roses, and veronicastrum, I have 3, great for bees, keep up the good work!

Charlie really busted his butt on that garden. You can tell there are years of effort there. Love how you are making the garden your own without bulldozing everything like some people do with a new place. Blessings

Joe how lovely it must be for you to finally have your dream home and garden and with your design knowledge and love of the au naturelle style, I can’t think of a better person to take over Charlie’s garden. He must be so happy to be able to keep up with the progress you’ve made. The pathways are genius and thank you for taking us along with you as you garden on the hoof!

What an absolute gem you’ve acquired! I have three Philadelphus in my garden. Coronarious (same as yours), Virginalis (double) & Belle Etoile (dwarf single with burgundy blotch). All smell divine! My winter Lonicera fragrantissima is flowering currently. (Winter down under).

Your property is similar to mine in terms of the wild gardening. I love just walking around and finding little things to clip back, etc. I have a few beds here and there where I try to force my own will on it more, but good lord is it hard work and most plants won't stand a chance against these established wild thugs. I'm proud of what I've managed to do but it takes constant upkeep to keep the wild at bay. Best to embrace such a situation instead of fighting a losing battle, lol! It's the kind of property that gobbles plants up. You think, Huh, I've got a ton of plants to put in! Then you put them in and you realize it's a drop in the ocean. You're lucky to have so many "heirlooms" you inherited from the previous owner, at least that gives you a head start!

The roses and philadelphus look amazing! 04:59 Would that jasmine do in a pot? 06:56 We have 40m of beech hedge that gets the aphid every year and it’s fine left to sort itself out. I didn’t realise it was special to beech though.

I love that you want to share your gardening process. I appreciate that. I just came across your channel yesterday or the day before but I've been a British Gardening fan for 8 years now.
Like you, I am leaving the extra plants to chop and drop to feed the others and they also keep the roots cooler.
    Thanks for sharing!
