Monty Phyton and the Holy Grail is genius comedians making fun of everything with zero budget and who were only allowed to film at one castle
My grandpa was a forester There and apparently the owners hated the whole thing and spent most of the filming period trying to get them to leave

Scott Mantooth I mean, they weren’t wrong on that.
@@kingofthings7929 *but on reflection look how Holy Grail is now considered a true classic with the one castle open to the public they were able to use and how much tourism revolves around its appearance... and those that do arrive tour the castle to the accompaniment of banging coconut halves together...as i would if given the opportunity...seriously*
Scott Mantooth Agreed. But no one knew that Monty Python was making an absolute comedy classic at the time. Hence people not wanting them in their castles.
But yeah, I’d absolutely wander that castle to the sound of coconuts.
The narrator's heart attack kills me every time I watch it.
So does the gag that after all they go through during the film, they just end up back again against the rude French Knight who throws insults at them.
One flaw I'd give this video however is Monty Python wasn't the first to do this mixture of Satire and Absurd, it was the Goon Show with Spike Miligan, Harry Secombe; Peter Sellers (Yes of Dr Strangelove and Pink Panther fame) and Michael Bentine which set the template for Python 15 years before the Python's became Python.
@@danielebowman The Python were greatly influenced by the Goon Show. John Cleese put great emphasis in his autobiograhy on how much he learned form Sellers as he worked with him on TV comedy (or is it radio i don't remember).

The aspect of Monty Python I find the most fascinating is how Monty Python seems so spontaneous, yet the scripts underlying the sketches can remain unchanged for decades.
They were / are very intelligent and talented guys
Definitely never got the philosophical credit they deserve. I've always said comedy is how you teach people who don't want to learn.
I think what you may be looking for is that they were very disciplined and would rehearse thoroughly. It seems spontaneous because they spent months writing and re-writing every season of the TV show, arranging skits in order, figuring out the through-lines and recurring gags, etc. The movies each took years to write, with whole plots thrown out and rewritten. In other words, it seems spontaneous because they practiced so much.

It's very difficult to write good comedy these days, for fear of offending overly sensitive folk who believe themselves to be so "special" that the rest of the population must acknowledge their feelings at all times. However, with that said, there's a play available on Lulu.com called Taunting the Beast: A love letter to satire, by Christina Triks. It's a social satire that blatantly attacks the PC culture and the lunacy of religion and it's probably the most controversial comedy around. It was obviously inspired by Monty Python and it's absolutely hilarious. Check it out before it's banned.

There's no other comedy tv-show that's so old and still so fresh than Monty Pythons Flying Circus and this is probably the reason why. @Steven Rojo-

Wisecrack how about parks and rec ? Leslie is always so optimistic ( especially in season 1 ) she keeps going at what she sets out to do and holds on to her beliefs
I definitely second an analysis of Parks and Rec. It's the most heartwarming show I know.
You could consider The Good Place, it has a strong philosophical core, and has a deconstruction of Objective Morality which is spanning three seasons. It might be a little pessimistic in concept but I think it has an optimistic core.
I'm watching The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt right now, that'd be a good one. Don't know if it's popular enough, but... I think you could also do something like that with Stranger Things; it's dark, but ultimately optimistic about our ability to overcome the darkness through our connections with each other.
I'm a writer and comedian with a couple shows behind my belt and this was great. My Granddad worked on Python and it has been a huge influence. This was a great break down on why it effected me so much. Cheers and great vid.

This video just gets more brilliant every time I watch it.
Man, I wish more people could talk about how Monty Python's movies were absolutely genius. The way they shaped modern comedy for shows and movies like deadpool and southpark is really fascinating
#WIsecrackAMA I'm not sure that all the Python's would necessarily agree that subverting meta-narratives, even specifically Arthurian Chivalry is a particularly modern or even Post Modern phenomenon. Terry Jones (medievalist of the Pythons) I'm sure would tell you that Chaucer was doing just that in the Canterbury Tales. Aside from that, good video lads. Enjoying your work a lot and love this one in particular. You should do more stuff on Adventure time, did you see the recent episode that was based on the Sir Gawain and The Green Knight? Their level of intertextual referencing and deconstruction is insane.
Interestingly enough, I had a teacher in High School say that very same thing about the Canterbury Tales.
Add to that the Gawain Poet who enjoyed mocking the whole thing in 14c
Don't leave out Don Quixote.
I want to know if Python could be a first in it's sheer amount of absurdity thrown at sacred institutions; anyone will probably see it within the first 30 seconds of watching a sketch. With the literary classics, the first barrier was knowing how to read (well, maybe not the Saga, it was probably oral), and having the time to do so. And even then, would the deconstruction be so obvious without some thought? I don't know, sadly I have not read any of these yet.
Course, before Python, you could also fine it at the cinema with the Marx Brothers, political cartoons in newspapers, or in satirical theater going back to ancient Rome. But I wonder if Monty Python via the television could be a milestone of sheer amount of popular disrespect. Until newgrounds.com or the onion was invented that is.
+Magus Marquillin I think the thing that's puzzled me most about Python is how they ever got the BBC to allow them on the air in the first place. Bastion of British government lets some crazy guys shred the fabric of British society every week? To me it's similar to HBO and subsidiaries like Comedy Central, except that the latter are corporate instead of government. A lot of stuff on CC seems a solid effort to tear down their own house, which I respect enormously. I've long thought that it must have been the same rationale for the BBC giving Monty Python their wings.
Yes, it was an outlet for pent-up angst against the government, British culture and human nature in general. You need to have some of that in a healthy society, at the least. But MP was *so* subversive. It could have been political suicide, allowing them to continue. In many ways, thankfully it was. The world wouldn't be the same without them. How much more boring would I be if not for them? A lot...
I'm not sure whether Chaucer's society was postmodern. To call Chaucer postmodern is to be anachronistic. Lyotard never said that irony and subversion was invented in the 20th century, he said that the cultural conditions of postmodernity steered us towards irony and subversion, and so Monty Python is an example of the postmodern. Monty Python is not just defined as postmodern because of its contents.
Thanks for the add!,,, and at such an auspicious time 333!
The ultimate greatness of Monty Python is that no matter how absurd their sketch seems, one day reality recreate it and put you in it.
I love the way you pronounce the names of our french authors/philosophers ^^

You know, I actually preferred a similar short along the same lines called... What was it? Video of a Bear? It was pretty disturbing.
Wisecrack Sounds great! I loved when Film Theory covered DHMIS
So do you try and form a tenuous link to Rick and Morty in every video?
I love all of these videos, thank you so much for enriching the internet like this. This has turned into my philosophy
That, was incredibly well done.
Because any Wisecrack video wouldn't be complete without your regularly scheduled Rick and Morty bukkake.
Hey, if it gets views, why would they change it?
Honest to God, I'm getting so fucking sick of it.
Who gives a fuck? They like Rick and Morty so why not just let them do so? Being all anti Rick and Morty just because it became very popular only makes you as cringe worthy as the people who thinks that liking Rick and Morty makes them all smart and special snow flaky.
Electro-Cute We're not against it because it's popular but because they keep forcing it into almost every episode like it's the epitome of all themes ever.
Clearly lots of people gives a fuck and I see where they're coming from. When making a video about the Monty Python and how it shaped some modern comedies they had to choose Rick and Morty just because they like it. It seems to be quite biased as there are many other shows to feature yet they still choose R&M.
#WisecrackAMA Philosophy of the Simpsons something you guys would be cool with? Or a "What Happened" of the Simpsons?
@John Trowbridge-
Andrew: I loved the Simpsons growing up, but it would be more interesting to see a “What Went Wrong” episode on the more recent seasons.
Jacob: A good friend gifted me the Economics in Simpsons book (Homer Economicus). I'll need to read that to figure out if we have a good angle.
Wisecrack those are both perfect ideas
A channel by the name Super Eyepatch Wolf actually did an interesting video essay on the topic: "The Fall of The Simpsons: How it Happened". It covers the changes in staff and the comedic style of the show over the years, really worth a watch!
Stormblitz beat me to it, that video is perfect for this question and as much as I love Wisecrack i'm not sure they could it a whole lot better.
Hey dude this was interesting to watch kudos man
There was love in that cake (15:50)
13:37 Mortal Engine looking good.
Python did it first hahaha
I wonder if you guys will ever tackle the infamous Neon Genesis Evangelion? #WisecrackAMA
@Concentric Octagons-Jared: The script is written and being put through production as we speak!
Wisecrack great
Can't wait.
Whenever I remember Neon Genesis Evangelion the first scene that comes to mind is when Shinji jerks-off to Asuka in the hospital.
Charles Lee whenever I remember it. I remember ttgl instead
I am thankful for the existance of Monty Python's comedy and entertainment, but also the lessons from it.
Monty Python fans may appreciate this deep dive also ua-cam.com/video/QC6Pt5D-3oo/v-deo.html
