      So does the gag that after all they go through during the film, they just end up back again against the rude French Knight who throws insults at them.
      One flaw I'd give this video however is Monty Python wasn't the first to do this mixture of Satire and Absurd, it was the Goon Show with Spike Miligan, Harry Secombe; Peter Sellers (Yes of Dr Strangelove and Pink Panther fame) and Michael Bentine which set the template for Python 15 years before the Python's became Python.

      I think what you may be looking for is that they were very disciplined and would rehearse thoroughly. It seems spontaneous because they spent months writing and re-writing every season of the TV show, arranging skits in order, figuring out the through-lines and recurring gags, etc. The movies each took years to write, with whole plots thrown out and rewritten. In other words, it seems spontaneous because they practiced so much.

      It's very difficult to write good comedy these days, for fear of offending overly sensitive folk who believe themselves to be so "special" that the rest of the population must acknowledge their feelings at all times. However, with that said, there's a play available on Lulu.com called Taunting the Beast: A love letter to satire, by Christina Triks. It's a social satire that blatantly attacks the PC culture and the lunacy of religion and it's probably the most controversial comedy around. It was obviously inspired by Monty Python and it's absolutely hilarious. Check it out before it's banned.

    Monty Python’s Flying Circus is miles ahead the best comedy show I’ve ever seen in my life. They didn’t hold back anything, nonsensical, demented, incredibly fast paced and surreal, yet deep and socially aware. The mold for all modern TV Shows to come, mold that SNL made good use of. They were The Beatles of contemporary comedy.

    There's no other comedy tv-show that's so old and still so fresh than Monty Pythons Flying Circus and this is probably the reason why. Their comedy was so ahead of their time (and considered quite disturbing, weird and offensive back then) and still so relevant and spread all over "normal" comedy today ...like pieces of the fat exploding man.

    #WIsecrackAMA I'm not sure that all the Python's would necessarily agree that subverting meta-narratives, even specifically Arthurian Chivalry is a particularly modern or even Post Modern phenomenon. Terry Jones (medievalist of the Pythons) I'm sure would tell you that Chaucer was doing just that in the Canterbury Tales. Aside from that, good video lads. Enjoying your work a lot and love this one in particular. You should do more stuff on Adventure time, did you see the recent episode that was based on the Sir Gawain and The Green Knight? Their level of intertextual referencing and deconstruction is insane.

      Don't leave out Don Quixote.
      I want to know if Python could be a first in it's sheer amount of absurdity thrown at sacred institutions; anyone will probably see it within the first 30 seconds of watching a sketch. With the literary classics, the first barrier was knowing how to read (well, maybe not the Saga, it was probably oral), and having the time to do so. And even then, would the deconstruction be so obvious without some thought? I don't know, sadly I have not read any of these yet.
      Course, before Python, you could also fine it at the cinema with the Marx Brothers, political cartoons in newspapers, or in satirical theater going back to ancient Rome. But I wonder if Monty Python via the television could be a milestone of sheer amount of popular disrespect. Until newgrounds.com or the onion was invented that is.

    • @hunglikeahamster3248
      @hunglikeahamster3248 6 років тому

      +Magus Marquillin I think the thing that's puzzled me most about Python is how they ever got the BBC to allow them on the air in the first place. Bastion of British government lets some crazy guys shred the fabric of British society every week? To me it's similar to HBO and subsidiaries like Comedy Central, except that the latter are corporate instead of government. A lot of stuff on CC seems a solid effort to tear down their own house, which I respect enormously. I've long thought that it must have been the same rationale for the BBC giving Monty Python their wings.
      Yes, it was an outlet for pent-up angst against the government, British culture and human nature in general. You need to have some of that in a healthy society, at the least. But MP was *so* subversive. It could have been political suicide, allowing them to continue. In many ways, thankfully it was. The world wouldn't be the same without them. How much more boring would I be if not for them? A lot...

    • @robertgould1345
      @robertgould1345 5 років тому

      I'm not sure whether Chaucer's society was postmodern. To call Chaucer postmodern is to be anachronistic. Lyotard never said that irony and subversion was invented in the 20th century, he said that the cultural conditions of postmodernity steered us towards irony and subversion, and so Monty Python is an example of the postmodern. Monty Python is not just defined as postmodern because of its contents.

    7:00 reminds me of the logic by Erasmus Montanus. In the book, he makes his mother believe she is a rock, by using the argument "You cannot fly, neither can a rock, therefore you are a rock"

    One additional point I'd add... the chemestry of the members, how they played off each other, used each other's strengths... in addition to everything else you listed, I would also argue that Python perfect the 'comedy troupe' as well.

      Who gives a fuck? They like Rick and Morty so why not just let them do so? Being all anti Rick and Morty just because it became very popular only makes you as cringe worthy as the people who thinks that liking Rick and Morty makes them all smart and special snow flaky.

      Electro-Cute We're not against it because it's popular but because they keep forcing it into almost every episode like it's the epitome of all themes ever.

      Clearly lots of people gives a fuck and I see where they're coming from. When making a video about the Monty Python and how it shaped some modern comedies they had to choose Rick and Morty just because they like it. It seems to be quite biased as there are many other shows to feature yet they still choose R&M.

      @John Trowbridge-
      Andrew: I loved the Simpsons growing up, but it would be more interesting to see a “What Went Wrong” episode on the more recent seasons.
      Jacob: A good friend gifted me the Economics in Simpsons book (Homer Economicus). I'll need to read that to figure out if we have a good angle.
