New Audi RS6 v Audi R8: DRAG RACE

- We’ve got our hands on the all-new Audi RS6 Performance, and we’re about to find out if it has what it needs to compete with Mat’s new long-term test car, the Audi R8 Spyder!
So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the Audi RS6, it’s powered by the same 4-litre twin-turbo V8 as the regular Audi RS6. However, power has been increased slightly over the regular car, and it now produces 630hp and 850Nm of torque. This power is delivered to all-four wheels via an 8-speed torque converter gearbox, and it weighs in at 2,090kg. If you’re looking to pick up an all-new one, it’ll set you back around £113,000.
Then we have the R8. It’s equipped with a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 which can produce 620hp and 580Nm of torque. This power is delivered to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it weighs a fair bit less than the RS6, coming in at 1,695kg.
However, while it’s a lot lighter than the RS6, it’s also a lot more expensive, coming in at around £160,000!
So the RS6 is slightly more powerful, but surely a practical family estate can’t beat a supercar… Right?! There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

All you’d have to do is remove that useless 48v mild hybrid battery setup. That would easily remove about 200kgs, give it a carbon roof, and some lightweight 20” wheels instead of 22”… and boom.

That R8 really sounds epic except the stationary but it can be managed by removing the limiter
The R8 has 320kph top speed even though the acceleration isnt all that great.
Not the best sounding V10 but def awesome. Love 10 and 12cyl personally, or their 5 and 6 cylinder little siblings lol
@purwantiallan5089 well unless you tune it. With even just some bolt ones and stuff they do quite well, hence how many of those and Hurracans end up in drag race comps etc

The 5.2L V10 in both the R8 and Huracan is a masterpiece. They're not producing this V10 anymore, so I will miss it.

That was so much fun, the only thing I would do is swap the colours around, the rs6 in semi subtle green would look dreamy & the R8 suits a brighter colour, really enjoyed this video :)
@carwow it would be awesome to test a pack of normal cars, against a supercar just to see the diference: for example a Audi 2.0 tdi vs a Aventador... or a Citroen C4 against a Mclaren. It would be interesting to see the diference of both worlds.

You should do a race where you have to haul a bunch of luggage and groceries around a track and see if the R8 can compensate its lack of cargo space with raw speed.
R8s are not that great on the track to begin with, maybe that could work with the GT version

How pointless
Launch control doesn't quite bypass the rev limiter, it just bring the limit a bit higher :) I believe on some Audi it's the gear selector that need to be in between position for the limit to be bypassed.
Dunno why you bother with the brake test no one cares..
Hi there Matt! I have a quick trick for the soud check when the car has a softlimiter. If you hold the gear selector between neutral and drive, the gearbox wont engage neither the softlimiter system. Then you can reach that redline beautfull sound! Take care and nice content! (Works on most cars)

Considering the extra weight of the RS6 was like carrying 4 extra passengers that was closer than I thought it would be.

FYI: For anyone wondering why the windows on the Audi R8 look like they are covered in spots, it's because they have a polarised filter on the camera.

The lunch on the RS6 is just unbelievable but R8 is R8, with performance Quattro no one has a chance in the price range.
The R8 always has good launches like the 1970 Plymouth Cuda.
It may not have won, but the fact that a family estate can almost hold it’s own against a supercar is mental. Props to the clever guys down at Audi for the building that thing
That R8 kickdown in comfort is crazy
its actually strange to do that. myself and other r8 4s owners experienced a confusing behavior when doing kickdown in confort. it feels like the car is going into a kind of launch control. it shows second gear as example but you dont go forward. suddendly a gear will be kicked in and it shots off. in S it feels completly different.

Yeah naturally aspirated engines and dual clutch transmissions for the win :) The response is really nice and doesn't have any lag. I will say that the Lamborghini Huracan responds a bit better than the R8, but still really nice.

The R8 is pure insanity! The thought of it being a naturally aspirated ''spyder'' car with roof down and hitting below 11 secs for the quarter mile.... where even most twin turbo charged or tuned cars cant achieve. And its not even the performance quattro coupe version. Now just imagine the R8 with twin turbo. Holy Cow

I think they have it in an Individual setting. Comfort mode in my RS7 doesn't squat like that because it is a reduced power mode, Dynamic mode launches flat with full power and keeps the weight over the front tyres, so my guess is an Individual setting with the cushy Comfort suspension and full Dynamic Power in the engine, gearbox and diff. Much better weight transfer to the rear, and hell, this RS6 launches.

Just imagine if Audi decided to put twinturbo kit on R8. Easily 850 hp and 1000Nm. What a beast that would have been.
It'd defeat the purpose though, the point is having an NA engine. It's been proven that the engine can take more than 1000HP judging by those Huracan drag builds.

I understand what you are talking about and you are absolutely right. But those aftermatket builds are not the same as the factory one.
When doing the sound comparisons, they should also do a rolling sound check too to let people hear the cars without the limiters.

The R8 sounds insanely good here for some reason
The V10 Lambo motors are probably THE best sounding V10's ever. That deep bass growl is epic. :The BMW V10's from the M6/M5 in the mid to late 2000's are great as well. Folks rave about the LFA, which I am not a huge fan of the exhaust note, as it is raspier and not as deep.

Power to weight, better aerodynamics and DCT over torque convertor are the biggest factors here.
A bit of a strange comparison using a Spyder with the roof off(!) haha, the V10+ Coupe is much much quicker and would absolutely wipe the floor with the RS6 Performance.

R8 needs some twin turbos
Yeah, but being naturally aspirated, it has a better engine response without turbo lag, and that dual clutch is really nice in terms of shift logic. Plus you don't see naturally aspirated supercars nowadays (although the R8 is also going away).
Please race Yianni when he gets his Revuelto, i know he’d probably win, but having you guys race in your own personal cars would be epic!
