    I've been digging for 50 years now, and this assessment is absolutely correct. I have both the Deus 2 and the Manticore and live in the middle of the hottest dirt in Virginia. Out in the open, the Manticore is hands down the best machine and you are correct about EMI. I use the Deus 2 in the woods and find that it separates better but isn't as deep. Thanks for hitting this nail on the head!

    Thank you Loren for posting this video with your thoughts and opinions. I love my Manticore and even more now that I have both the 15" and 8" coils. I am glad to see that you are not being "bought out" like other channels that are cleary given machines to try and boost their sales. Keep up the great work!

      Hi Loren I just came back from camping up in the mountains in central Mexico where I have gone several times using equinox, and D1 and D2 I really like my D2 it's and excelente Unmasker but this time I took the Manticore and went over the same spots where I found some beautiful colonial coins with the D2 and I was shock 😮 to find a couple of deep target's with the Manticore the amount of information it gives you is incredible my friend was using a analog vista smart with a sniper coil and he did very good also he dug more junk than I did but also a very capable detector

    That I feel was one of the most honest reviews ive seen in quite a while. I started with the NOX 800 and was new to detecting. I learned the NOX 800 pretty quickly and found alot of cool stuff but decided to cash in some of the finds I had and bought a Manticore, the learning curve being new to the hobby was huge. Ive got probably 500 plus hours on in and at least another 500 in research with the manticore and it is still surprising me every trip, I feel like there is so much information that is just not out there yet and seems like as I get better with it I continue to find new tricks.

      I am glad you enjoyed my review! The Nox 800 really is a fantastic detector that manages to remain user friendly while still getting top tier performance. The Manticore continues to surprise me too, especially since the majority of UA-cam land gave up on it within a week or two.

      Yeah I really feel like most people are not ready or weren't ready for a machine of this caliber. It is not a plug and play machine and to really take advantage of it you have to understand that it was not built to be in the first place.@@LorenLemcke

    I’ll be honest I love my manticore but when I first got it I was ready to throw it in the trash. Coming from the nox 800 ( my first detector) the manticore was overwhelming. The update has really helped me with the machine. Before it seemed what ever you set the ferrous to the target would come in just under it. Now those settings seem to work the way they were supposed to. I hunt a lot of farm fields where the house is no longer there. Lots of square nails. I still dig some but not nearly as much and I usually know it’s not a good target but dig it anyway. The 2D screen helps a lot but in the right situation you are better off digging the sound because multiple targets will mess 2D screen up. I totally agree with your synopsis of manticore.

    • @LorenLemcke

    Thanks for sharing and spot on there with the manticore, lots more to learn with it regarding the custom ferrous limits and it’s king for those deeper targets that would either whisper or miss with other machines.
    I think the trick I’ve learnt is to pick one machine, master it on some amazing ground you have researched and enjoy uncovering history.
    I will always run two machines as the wife likes to come along so the D2 and the manticore are my pick but the nokta legend is unbelievable for the price.

    I think the performance to a metal detector can tip if in favor to the manufacturer that are serious regarding all the feedback they getting from the😊 customers when they are working on software development for future updates. Minelab has a long way to when it comes to giving updates to their machines compared to Nokia Makro and XP Metal Detectors. I think the hardware in newer machines are capable off much more features from improved algorithms, also when it comes to developing new types of coils it’s going too slow I think. I know that XP Metal Detectors are working on some new coil designs for the XP Deus II and I think we soon will see a elliptical HF coil like the one they made for the Deus I with much higher frequency. I would also like to se a small round 6” coil for the Deus II like the one you have to Minelab Equinox 900, that is a must have coil if you are searching in saltwater or doing scuba diving.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah there are a ton of features I would like to see Minelab develop for the Manticore. They did fulfil some of my requests for soft keys (I don't know if they were just my requests or if others requested them too) in the last update. I couldn't agree more that each company needs to step up their coil game a bit, but word on the street is its a manufacturing / supply chain issue of some sort.

    I think learning the machine is key. I have the Nokta Legend and I find that it took me many times out to really learn the machine. I've been out hunting with other detectorists with more expensive machine like the Mantcore and Deus II but they just got them and haven't learned them and they struggled a bit. Those machines are great but there is a learning curve to get the most out of them. I am sure they would out perform the Legend but experience and knowing the machine is critical to your success. Great information regarding the Manticore, Loren. I agree with the “arsenal of detectors” suggestion and primarily use two detectors , Deus 2 and an Apex. I have multiple coils for the Apex and two for the Deus 2 for all kinds of sites. Both are good machines when learned. Are you going to do a similar video on the Deus 2 or the Legend?

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  7 місяців тому +2

      I have been wanting to try the Apex. I feel like it never really got a fair shake in "UA-camland" and would like to give it a proper go. I would consider doing a similar video for the Deus 2 because I know that detector well, but I don't actually own a Legend. A friend that I detect with often does, so I have gotten a chance to swing it a bit, but I wouldn't say I know it well enough to share my thoughts. Though my impressions of it are very positive.

    • @DIG_5050
      @DIG_5050 7 місяців тому +1

      @@LorenLemcke The Apex lacks adjustability of the newer machines. I bought it late 2020 and used it for several months before winter here in the US. It was the only other SMF machine available at that time, an alternative to Minelab offerings. I mostly use it in “cleaner” hunt areas where the iron/trash level is less. Not that it doesn’t work well in iron, it just takes longer (than let’s say a Deus 2 for example) to extract the desirable targets out of an area. My only wish is that Garrett would update/refine the firmware a bit, and maybe add a recovery speed adjustment and a few other tweaks.

  • @harrylostforevermetaldetec1025

    Thanks for the honest review. I agree with all you mentioned, the Legend is a great starting machine! As for the pros and cons of the Manticore and Deus 2 , the Deus 2 may be a tiny bit better at sniffing out targets in trashy areas but here are 2 reasons I would not choose to go with it. It is not as dependable as the Manticore, and is actually needs addressing which makes it more fragile in the field or should I say water. In order to be able to work in water that excessively long thin wire must be attached to the coil and then the control box. This wire is flimsy and breaks and can and has ruined hunting trips for some people, See Detecting NYC where Merrill is excited to be on vacation in a distant resort only to have that wire break and end his chances of detecting in the water, ( fortunately he was able to improvise a temporary fix so he could continue detecting). The other problem is as you mentioned the Display screen is too small and therefore the text is small and hard for aging eyes to make sense of, where as the Manticore makes it a pleasure to view, the majority of detectorists are of the old portion of society and Deus has to address that oversight (no pun intended). Merrill used to be the one I turned to for impartial honest reviews, but alas he has become a paid spokesman for Deus and has been seduced by the dollar side of the force.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  7 місяців тому

      Haha, I can't really blame Merrill for seizing the opportunity, and I guess to his credit he has turned over his metal detecting reviewing operation so he's at least not trying to hide his biases. But it is a shame that he will be a one company channel from now on. I love all the major brands detector's so I would hate to give them up.

    Probably the best recommendation that I’ve ever heard when it comes to Metal detecting choices. I primarily use the D2 with the 9 inch coil because of the weight and performance. However, in my opinion, the performance is so close that it’s not worth arguing about. I had an issue with the manticore being very chirpy while swinging the coil hitting vines and twigs etc. I haven’t tried the 9 inch coil yet. I’m very interested in seeing this performance because there are things that I love about the Moore compared to the D2. Great video.👌🏼

    Ran both side by side today. The Deus II with the FMF 11’ Coil and had the latest update which the owner who let me borrow it said he i having alot of falsing with it since the update and he was going to revert to the prior release. I experienced that falsing and missed targets the Manticore hit on. And this was in a trasy park and I was using the M9 coil that the owner had on it. I like the wireless nomenclature of the XP, but the Manticore would be my choice until XP fixes the Deus II software and offers smaller coils. So I would pick the Manticore at this poit.

    Manticore? Does it do anything more factoring in all relevant facts? Undisputedly, Nokta is extremely competitive! First of importance was the legend. And now the double score. Has any manufacturer ever been more attentive to the customers and extremely responsive? Metal detecting has recently moved into intellectual property, i.e., software writers? Does any manufacturer compare to the capabilities of the software writers of Nokta? That is where I must use my energy to study the software capabilities. I always appreciate your videos. Thanks.

      The Nokta Double score is looking darn good for its proposed price / performance ratio. I wouldn't even be surprised if it ends up performing as good as the top tier machines. Yeah a lot of the differences between these machines come down to how the software processes the information.

    I concur I own both the D2 I’d is great it locks on with great ID I like the manticore better where EMI is present I believe it’s because of the D2 being all wireless makes it more susceptible to EMI I use both machines at the same spots

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  7 місяців тому

      Yup, the different ways the two detectors do TID makes them a good compliment to one another. I'd imagine most of the noise comes from the signal obtained by the receive portion of the coil, since this signal is highly amplified (and so is the noise), where as the wireless aspects of the signal are likely very true (low SNR). I think it just comes down to how they process signals, and the fact the Manticore has inherently better SNR from increased transmit power. Would be curious to test to see if the D2's antenna for underwater hunting has any impact on the EMI level on the machine.

    Quick question. Are you saying that to get the best out of the Manticore you need to have a lot of experience with the machine and tones. On deep targets it appears you are saying you rely on sound rather than the scree

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  7 місяців тому

      I do think it requires some experience to get all the benefit of the modest extra depth, but most of that experience comes with identifying deep targets to begin with. I find lots of beginners and intermediates will pass right over some ultra deep targets. I do rely upon audio at the limits of depth because TID tends to break down, same with the Manticore 2D screen.

    while i agree that mastering multiple instruments- and situations- is the key to success, in my experience the majority of detectors are simply unfit (or perhaps not designed for) for scenarios that go beyond the well manured lane or the tilled farm field. with that i do not mean that detecting with them in such scenarios is not possible, but rather that in my experience the effort required is much greater, consequentially afflicting the performance of the act. That's why after using an equinox 800 for 4 years and trying many detectors in the meantime, i now use a deus II a significant minority of the time, the rest being occupied by a selection of other machines with a few analogs and the 800 not last among them.
