It was not overrated. It was a good game. Some silly things like Paul George screen made it annoying but it’s still a top 3 2k of all time in my opinion
You just cleared a lot of things up for me, I’ve always praised 2k17 but I first got the game months after launch when they fixed the game for the most part luckily, even when I got the game there was still the loading screen issues.
FINALLY somebody said it. Real 2k OGs remember when 2k17 came out, everybody complained it was 2k16.5. Many players went back to 2k16 right after launch
I love your content SD and I think you made some pretty valid arguments with supporting criticism. A.I was braindead as someone who played MyGm and mycareer all day, Multiple glitches in the park, and a downgrade in presentation from 2k16, but it all boils down to what you said fond memories. As of now 2k is extremely dry with expensive monetization, dull unfair gameplay and the community is less a community and more seeing who’s the best on the game (aka who can abuse cheese more). But 2k17 even with its cheese was fun. 2k content would leap forward with multiple 2k UA-camrs creating content that you rarely see nowadays, the mycareer while corny at times was memorable and the storyline and character dynamics made it seem like you just weren’t playing games to upgrade and play in park but playing to also see what happened in the story, you could go into park with 55 overall centers and still do good , and lots of little gameplay changes such as them trying to dial back on animations made for funner gameplay moments. I was about 13 when it came out and I had a lot of good memories from the game you just don’t get with 23. While 2k23 is a better basketball game it’s not a better game if that makes sense.
It is overrated but I absolutely love it. Shooting felt so clean and the story mode was endearing. I will never forget the feeling of throwing a lob to myself as Micheal b Jordan
Oh man! Get to work, see a new SDTV video.. ftw! Can't wait to grab a snack and watch! I did enjoy this game. Was the last one that had KG active on the Wolves lol
Soft Drink do you think when Mlb The Show 23 comes out you could give your review on it? I’ve always been a Mlb the show fan. And they’ve actually updated Franchise mode. And added Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa sounds unbelievable right? This would be great.
Don't give MLB the show credit you franchise guys have been asking for improvements for years and still doesn't even compare to the PS3 era games. MLB the show would be on par with Madden if it wasn't for it's good gameplay.
Great video, but if i'm being honest, outside of 2k20, 17 was the last game that genuinely made me happy to play and I know i'm not alone, nostalgia plays a big part yeah, but even so I had unlimited fun on this game I think it's rated perfectly fine in my opinion.
17 was the last best 2k. Ever since they went to the neighborhood the game has been a microtransaction hell. 17 was just like 16 but with better defense and better mycareer. Idk what these comments are talking about. I had a slasher who was knocking down 3s and crossing everyone over. Nobody I know shit on the game during it's lifespan. Maybe you care what too many cheesy streamers have to say.
the overhaul to MyLeague and MyGM makes 2k17 not overrated for that reason. The draft classes could be carefully made, and it wasn't just a bunch of cookie cutter players. I ended up making like 10 draft classes, downloaded another 5-6 and had my own league last into the 2030's. There is nothing else like it. The amount of control and creativity with the simulation aspect of the game is incredible. I do agree with others that 2k16 had the best gameplay but 2k17 franchise mode is legit AF
100%. I feel like this where any analysis really depends which modes you prefer but 2k17 took 16's MyLeague/GM to the next level. Hell the next two or three levels. It's probably the peak of the experience. Or 18, which just added the MyGM storyline. (Otherwise it's essentially the same.) But then 19 and 20 were re-skins that got progressively worse because the player generation system wasn't getting rebalanced with the new (inflated) player ratings and badges and because they stopped adding/cleaning up features. Then NextGen -- ugh. It just doesn't work. Contracts, player generation, UI, player progression, stat simulation, overall balance ... It's just bad. MyEras is a great concept in 23 and same for some of the newer features like assistant coaches but nothing works right. You just have to ignore way too much for my tastes to genuinely enjoy it.
2k17 was so great my park was so fun my career was actually good and not boring at all the story was good and rep system was good parks may have been the same but ngl they looked better in 17 u were able to upgrade ur court if u got a text from Jordan u had a unique thing in every park 1v 1v1 court in rough riders sunset has the fours court and the old town I honestly forgot but the parks even tho they were the same affiliations they had looked different from what they looked in 2k16 rough riders was underground somewhere in like a train area , sunset they added a fish tank or shark tank , old town was a amusement park , rep reward were good , no battle pass , it was smooth to dribble or shoot it was genuinely a great game wasn’t a disappointment at all it lived up after 16 I mean you can say the servers are bad but that’s games in general payday 3 servers were down for three days
I stopped buying 2k after this. Not only because it was a bad game but I also lost interest in the NBA. It confuses me so much how people say this game was the last great 2k. Either 2k18 was so bad that it made people look at 2k17 in a better light or they forgot how good 2k16 was.
1) Yes 18 was that bad. At least in MyCareer anyway 2) Maybe a little bit forgot about 16 but more likely the person saying that plays MyLeague. I know for me, a MyLeague player, having played 16, 17 and 18 this past summer, 17 was by far my favorite coming back to them 5 years later.
I've seen people put 2k17 up there with 2k16 and 2k11and its baffling. The only reason it gets praise is because pretty every 2k since has somehow been worse.
2K17 seriously started the downfall on the series and pretty much knew how bad it was when it came out. They completely screwed up the defense and movement and it never got better since. Still wish 2K16 was still available to play online.
I miss playing w regular and historic teams in Teamup sucks everyone just wants do glitch Myplayer mode with only 1 loadout that takes months to build plus $50+ to get started rather just pick up and play especially with all the Historic teams they added
@@kobe240money4 2K16 did have the ability to download logos and court ads from the servers, but 2K17 introducing the option to download full custom designs from the 2K servers, where as in 2K16, if you wanted a specific team design you would have to manually assemble it yourself.
Definitely against you on this one, 2k17 wasn’t perfect but the my park was amazing even with the face scan glitch and speed boosters. I get the loading screens took forever but still 2k18 and up the badge grind is more annoying then loading screens
People glorify it now but let’s not forget we all hated that game when it was out. The PG loading screen it took them all year to fix was bad. The archetype system was barebones so the builds were limited compared to 16 and meta builds became normal. My career was boring. And the servers took a step back from 16. Park after dark was garbage. And one place I disagree with you on is 2k20. 2k20 was slept on. The biggest issue I had with the game was the lies they told to start the year and how the game was fine at launch but people complained about being too hard to shoot on day one and then the patches screwed the game up and the game didn’t become better til about January of 2020
The servers for this game were SOOOOO BAD, it took 5 to 10 minutes to load onto the main menu and you’d get kicked out of everything, I didn’t play much park but I’d get kicked from MYCAREER GAMES. The gameplay wasn’t terrible, the AI was terrible tho, double teams were hilarious, also the shot meter for this game was my favorite OAT
Gameplay wise, I have the most fun and rage the least playing 2k17 vs any of the other ps4 2ks. You can actually read the defense and make the right decision to get open looks instead of animation hunting like in the other 2ks. Also you can time blocks and steals a lot better in 2k17 vs. having to spam steal and block in other years. 2k17 also has the most responsive controls of any 2k I’ve played. There’s almost no delay in the animations playing out and with the shot meter.
thats cause 2k17 easy, once you make it to the top, you make it to the top, with 16 though, what people don't mention is they use an engine thats algorithm based and hard coded, started from 2k14 on pc to 2k16, AI is the best in the game, but when you are are often leading, 2k does whatever it can to have role player guys score on you, even guys who can't shoot can score a 3 pointer or midrange on you, and then your team starts acting dumb and making weird turnovers they don't normally make, so you can lose the game
@@theonlygoodonehere2259 WHAT, "once u make it to the top you make it" your argument is flawed, first i could hop on nba 2k 17 on pc rn play a play now game and the ai would be fixed, defense was amazing, dribble moves was responsive, and the gameplay was all around amazing. also you couldnt just pick up 2k17 and learn all the dirbble moves in 1 second. so 2k17 being easy is wrong. u must have never played 2k17
@@yusukethemazoku9111 ugh, I play it all the time, games broken, its a good game, and not as bad as people make it out to be, but its very easy, dribbling does require skill though to learn, AI is also very dumbed down in that game to make it easy for you
I have been saying this for years adn receieved so much backlash. 2k17 is definition of nostalgia clouding your mind. This game marked the beginning of 2K falling off (in terms of quality).
I remember back in late 2016 when this game was still fresh when everybody was criticizing it, calling it the worst 2k of all time. Now that we have gotten worse 2ks, people appreciate it now. The nostalgia goggles are not coming off anytime soon. I wonder what reputation 2k17 would have if 2k18 didn’t stink so badly.
The sole reason for this game being overrated is the fanbase in the moment. 2k16 is regarded and is in my opinion the greatest 2k of all time, meaning the fanbase was eager for the next title to be even better which obviously didn’t come. Nostalgia got the best of people and 18 obviously makes people think the game prior is much better
I mean I thought 2k17 was just okay but sheesh I remember people 💩‘ing on 17 back then!!!! Now people act like it was the greatest 2k ever…can’t take the 2k community seriously at all.
The best 2ks were when the cpu was actually challenging but in a realistic way. You couldnt just sprint past the defense every play as if it was a track meet, they didnt overly double super early in the game to the point where your best player has 12+ assists by the end of the first quarter. Back in like 2k14 and before, offline game modes eere actually fun. Doing a franchise mode, gm mode, all star weekend, the blacktop having games of 21, 1v1 up to 5v5 allowing you to choose full or half court, 2k12 having team usa 1992, 2012 teams along wirh international teams, i can keep going. Mycareer/myplayer you didnt have to oay to be elite. And the nba games within that mode were fun and difficult but again not in a super cheating way. I remember it being a challenge to get 50+ points against some teams when now a days you basically start out getting 40+ if you pay to upgrade your player taking away the progression aspect of seeing your player to from being ok to being a demigod. Oh yeah you could make all around players that were tall, fast athletic without habdicaps allowing full control of your player design. They had to asd in a ton of badges to kinda go back to how it was with 6'9+ guard like builds.
I don't agree on most points as a person who pre-ordered this game. In the year span it launched 2k17 only had the majority of these problems mentioned for less than a month post-launch. The game had its flaws but nothing close to modern 2k issues. You mentioned the beginning of forcing players to be online in order to buy more VC. To an extent I agree, however, I must mention that if you play continuously everything in this 2k is more than achievable just through normal grind. Modern 2k this is simply almost impossible for any working adult.
NO YOU DIDNT!!😭😭😭one of my faves, only cuz PG13 is on the cover and he’s my goat. Kinda biased I guess. But I love it and it’s one of the best in my opinion.
lol i'll only start freaking out when you make a video about either the mlb the show series or one of the past 5 or 6 editions of the game. I really hope for that video one day!
When you talk about why everyone love 2k17 and you can’t come up with an answer, you failed to mention the one mode which made it get such a high rating: MyTeam. 2k17’s MyTeam mode was one of the best and it was like peak for a lot of content creators. Some of the OGs were heavily involved in the mode at the time like Cash, Troydan, and ShakeNBake while some the newbies like HTB and DBG started their content creating in 2K17. MyTeam was huge at the time and was very fun. That’s why 2K17 gets a highly overrated. Dom gave it a low score cuz he actually likes playing simulated basketball and 2K17 was starting to go away from that.
he also never mentioned how online play truly felt in gameplay. So many people will review 2k without going over the year to year changes like contest systems, jump shot timing, badge vs rating requirements effecting builders. It’s much deeper than just not liking pve modes
This is the game that I remember the least about from when i played 2k11 through 2k19, the mycareer was solid but mostly forgettable, the ui also was my least favorite of those 2ks
This was the last 2k all My buddies would get together to Play the MyLeague at The Crib & play till the sun came up we didn’t really Care for the Online yet
Great video. I went back to play 2k17 a few weeks ago playing some myleague and yea the cpu is shocking. The constant double teams when one of my players becomes slightly hot makes it borderline unplayable, because I want to dominate with LeBron, not just shoot constant wide open 3’s with iman shumpert lol. I loved playing park with my friends back in the day tho so this game will always be in my heart fr fr.
2k20 deffo stole the throne off 2k17 for most overrated 2K ever never seen a game so irrelevant before quarantine but after quarantine it’s regarded as one of the best smh
Im sorry but I think most people had more fun on 2k17 than 16-15. Even though 16 was better imo. The memories and park fun made the game the goat for me. I do agree it was flawed, I remember being able to shoot from half court and still get dunk animations. I had a 6'1 Sharp PG. Also the hair glitches, AI, random crashes, and the PG loading screen are very underlooked issues. And I think that was the start of 2k realizing they can drop unreleased games to the consumer.
I don't think the archetype system was even mentioned once in this video, but man that new attribute system was so disappointing. You had rim protectors and Lockdowns making jumpers like they were DeRozen and Steph Curry. 2k failed to balanced archetypes in this game and the attributes were so limiting. Also, Kobe Bryant was not on the active roster. This was the first 2k game after he retired in the 2016 season.
What you guys fail to understand is the depth in the mechanics in the game. I was a guy that dribbled the shot clock out. The amount of moves you could pull from different angles. Diagonal forward, diagonal backward, slide to side, forward, backwards. The depth in the controls was by far the deepest in 2ks history. Whether you were “cheesing” or not you understand that the engine that game was built on is completely gone. I suppose the issue is the love people have for this game isn’t for the simulation aspect. It’s the user on ball experience that captivated our minds. 2k17 is top 2 for me because I can still vividly remember the full control that I had over my player that I haven’t seen anything close to since. Everything you said was spot on though. I just think to understand why the game was great would require you to have a deeper knowledge of the mechanics.
Lol seems like you just talking out your ass with all due respect. The controls were not that deep nor freelanced. And it does not justify its gamebreaking bugs. You really tried to pull that "if you had more knowledge you would appreciate it more" but in the end it was just a hot mess. You could appreciate what you just explained while also pointing out how atrocious everything else was
I remember how much criticism 2k17 used to get during its lifecycle.
I think it’s now shown in a more positive light because of nostalgia and 2k18 being so bad.

You just cleared a lot of things up for me, I’ve always praised 2k17 but I first got the game months after launch when they fixed the game for the most part luckily, even when I got the game there was still the loading screen issues.
Thank you i tell my nephew all the time just because you and your friends are having fun playing a game doesnt mean the game isnt mid
FINALLY somebody said it. Real 2k OGs remember when 2k17 came out, everybody complained it was 2k16.5. Many players went back to 2k16 right after launch
Cap
You know how bad 2k18 had to be for people to go back and call 17 the GOAT!?!?😂😂😂
NBA 2K16 is the GOAT.
2k11 was the GOAT imo. Every mode was fun, full of depth, and not restricted by online modes and microtransactions.
We’ll never forget the Paul George loading screen
I still play it to this day
Soft Drink do you think when Mlb The Show 23 comes out you could give your review on it? I’ve always been a Mlb the show fan. And they’ve actually updated Franchise mode. And added Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa sounds unbelievable right? This would be great.
Don't give MLB the show credit you franchise guys have been asking for improvements for years and still doesn't even compare to the PS3 era games. MLB the show would be on par with Madden if it wasn't for it's good gameplay.
@@11Pharcyde Agreed but being on par with Madden is a stretch. Madden is on a whole different level. 😂
That Paul George loading screen was the worst
Damn.....I actually liked 2k17......it has it's problems but no matter the difficulty........ shooting worked lol
Still not as horrible as 2k23 ….2k18 is the worst and 2k23 is definitely second worst in 2k history
This comment right here 👍
Y’all say the same thing every year, remember when 2k21 was the worst 2k? Or when y’all said 21 was good and 22 was the worst? Stop it
Great video, but if i'm being honest, outside of 2k20, 17 was the last game that genuinely made me happy to play and I know i'm not alone, nostalgia plays a big part yeah, but even so I had unlimited fun on this game I think it's rated perfectly fine in my opinion.
no
One of the reason why people love this game was because 18 was so unbearable
For MyCareer. MyTeam and MyLeague were still good. 18 only sucked for MyCareer
But yes. 18 helps 17s reputation
(Otherwise it's essentially the same.)
But then 19 and 20 were re-skins that got progressively worse because the player generation system wasn't getting rebalanced with the new (inflated) player ratings and badges and because they stopped adding/cleaning up features.
At least in MyCareer anyway
2) Maybe a little bit forgot about 16 but more likely the person saying that plays MyLeague.
Bro I’m happy u said this, 16 is by far better. 17 had terrible animations. Just good dribbling and nostalgia
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. This game was terrible
dang man....this is why i watch you....speak unnoticed facts
ill take any nba2k game over any madden tho
once christmas came around and the patches hit, 2k17 was cold af it was certainly better than 18 imo
2k18 was so bad that it made 2k17 looks good I had a lot of fun with 17 but it was a ok game at best
I remember 17 was so bad to me I was still playing 16 that whole year
Likewise
No😭 this was the most fun I had in a 2k
NBA 2K17's MyLEAGUE introduced expansion teams and the ability to download custom team designs from 2K's servers.
I thought that was introduced in 16? you could at least download jerseys on my team, can't remember if you could on myleague tho
@@kobe240money4 2K16 did have the ability to download logos and court ads from the servers, but 2K17 introducing the option to download full custom designs from the 2K servers, where as in 2K16, if you wanted a specific team design you would have to manually assemble it yourself.
@@maxwasson2000 ah gotcha
Forgot to mention the ugly graphics and player models where everyone either looked like a bodybuilder or anorexic
The biggest issue I had with the game was the lies they told to start the year and how the game was fine at launch but people complained about being too hard to shoot on day one and then the patches screwed the game up and the game didn’t become better til about January of 2020
Thank you for saying that 2k17 is overrated. The only good thing about this game was the park game mode.
16 was so good I would play like 15-20 franchise regular season game but 17 I didn't even what to play a casual game with friends
I mean I thought 2k17 was just okay but sheesh I remember people 💩‘ing on 17 back then!!!! Now people act like it was the greatest 2k ever…can’t take the 2k community seriously at all.
Exactly. EVERYONE was 💩 on 2k17 during its life cycle. Now everyone is praising it. Make that make sense.
17 was the peak of the community thats why its overrated
still waiting for the fifa games retrospective but W video
2k17 had one of the most fun parks ever after Christmas
Yeah this game was buggy asf but i still had tons of fun playing it
lol i'll only start freaking out when you make a video about either the mlb the show series or one of the past 5 or 6 editions of the game.
U finally missed on a take, this is one of the most complete 2Ks you’re TRIPPIN
I loved playing park with my friends back in the day tho so this game will always be in my heart fr fr.
do yk how basketball works
Good video but umm…. We not gonna talk about how some of these clips have a TNT scoreboard, and 2k17 didn’t have that lol.
Review ncaa football 10. It’s relatively cheap and super fun. Great video here though!
2k20 deffo stole the throne off 2k17 for most overrated 2K ever never seen a game so irrelevant before quarantine but after quarantine it’s regarded as one of the best smh
I still play 2k17 24 is just garbage to me
Im sorry but I think most people had more fun on 2k17 than 16-15.
2k17 was the best 2k besides 15 and 16
I don't think the archetype system was even mentioned once in this video, but man that new attribute system was so disappointing.
So this is why I have fond memories of winning games in MyGM 2K17 compared to the difficult times in 2K24
To be fair i loved 17 but 16 was the last great 2k and since then 2k and the entire country really hasnt been shit since that year
19 20 and 21 are good
Bro, off topic, but what is the instrumental used at the start of the video?
You should do a retrospective on NBA 2k playgrounds
People only liked it because 18 was worse. I remember that people trashed on 17 during its entire life cycle

You could appreciate what you just explained while also pointing out how atrocious everything else was
2k17 had the best myteam. It was the perfect balance of realism and fantasy.
Rather play 23 than 17 is crazy
